  • Carpenter charged with robbing man with knife

    A 23-year-old carpenter, Femi Ariyo, who allegedly robbed a man of his mobile phone with a knife, was on Monday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides in Ogba area of Ikeja, is being tried for conspiracy, robbery and stealing.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offences on April 6 at Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, at about 5.00 a.m.

    He alleged that the accused with two others still at large, who was armed with a knife, robbed the complainant, Semiu Okunlola, of his phone worth N25, 000.

    “The accused accosted the complainant, who was going to work at about 5.00 a.m., brought out a knife and threatened to stab him to death if he refused to surrender his phone.

    “Out of fear, he released the phone to the accused while he and his accomplices took to their heels.

    “The complainant raised an alarm and passers-by gave them a hot chase and caught the accused while others escaped with the phone,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 295 and 409 of the Criminal Law of News Agency of Nigeria, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides three years, while Section 295 prescribes sentence not less than 21 years.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.I. Raji, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 bails with two sureties in like sum.

    Raji said the two sureties should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case has been adjourned until May 2 for mention.

     

  • Lagos developer faces fraud charge

    A 45-year-old developer, Sikiru Owolabi, who allegedly defrauded five accommodation seekers’ of N750,000 was on Friday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused, a resident at No. 15, Osanyintola St., Agege, a Lagos suburb, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the offences were committed between March 6 and March 23 at No. 16, Adekunjo St., Alakuko, Lagos.

    Ayorinde said the accused collected the sum of N300, 000 from one Oketokun Tolulope, under the pretext of securing a two-bedroom apartment which he never did.

    He said that Owolabi fraudulently obtained N230, 000 from one Fagboye Muyiwa, N100, 000 from Mikail Olusegun, N70,000 from Abatan Abiola and N50,000 from Ogungbemisola Olalekan, on the pretext of helping them to secure an accommodation at No. 16, Adekunjo St., Alakuko. Lagos.

    “When the complainants got to the house, they discovered that the accused had collected money for the same apartment from many people.’’

    The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene Sections 285 and312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year imprisonment for stealing.

    Also, Section 312 says that any person who obtains money under false pretences is liable to 15 years’ imprisonment.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Omolade Awope, granted the accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Awope ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with a statement of accounts for six months, and three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned the case until April 26, for trial.

     

  • Woman charged with defrauding fellow trader

    A 45-year-old trader, Nurat Olayemi, who allegedly obtained N300,000 from another woman on the pretext of curing her ailment, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Olayemi, who lives in Iyana-Ipaja, a suburb of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charges of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing slammed on her.

    But the prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 14 at Oshodi Market, Lagos.

    Samuel said the complainant, Silifa Bashiru, gave the money to the accused to “heal” her of an ailment, but she failed to do so.

    “The accused failed to perform the `miracle of healing’ as promised; the complainant reported the case to the police and she was immediately apprehended.”

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 312 stipulates 15 years for obtaining by false pretences.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, Magistrate A.R. Onilogbo granted her bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The magistrate said the sureties must be gainfully employed and also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The court adjourned the case until May 2 for mention.

     

  • Trader docked for beating co-tenant

    A 34-year-old trader, Patricia Osuma, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating her neighbor, Princess Rachael, to pulp.

    Osuma, who resides at No.6, Oluwa-Ajani St., Jibowu Estate, Abule-Egba, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault preferred against her.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 1 at her residence.

    Samuel said the assault by the accused on Rachael, her co-tenant, followed an argument between the duos.

    He said the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested.

    The offence, he added, contravenes Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 171 prescribes three-year jail term for assault.

    The Magistrate, A.R. Onilogbo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He stated that one of the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of   two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Onilogbo adjourned the case till May 2

     

     

     

  • Woman charged with stealing clothing materials

    A 40-year-old woman, Oloyede Sola, who allegedly burgled the shop of one Glory Emmanuel and stole clothing materials valued at N54, 000 was on Tuesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, whose address was not given, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Eruada Victor, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 22 in Makinde Street, Alausa, Ikeja.
    Eruada said the accused broke into the shop of the complainant and stole 20 yards of ‘Atiku’ type of fabrics   valued at N20, 000 and seven bundles of ‘Ankara’ fabrics valued at N34, 000
    “She was caught by the vigilance group in the area with the items and the cutlass she used to damage the door of the shop,” he said.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.
    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until April 26 for mention.

     

  • Bread seller docked for assaulting baker

    An 18-year-old bread seller, Kharimot Adeniyi, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly assaulting a bakery owner, Mr Mojeed Adedeji over some loaves of bread.

    Kharimot, who lives at Egbatedo St. Oko-Oba, Agege, a surb of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of assault, breach of peace and damage preferred against her.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Unah Mike, told the court that the accused on March 19 at Egbatedo St. Oko-oba, Agege, Lagos assaulted Adedeji.

    The prosecutor also said Kharimot collected 5 loaves of bread and later denied that it was 4 she collected, which led to an argument.

    According to the prosecutor, during the argument, the accused slapped and held Adedeji on the neck.

    “She also damaged the T-shirt of the complainant, valued at N2, 000”.
    “The accused also assaulted a Senior Police Officer; SP Regina Achom by dipping her finger into her eyes and tore her blouse valued N10, 000,’’ he said.

    According to her, the accused also committed the crime while Achom was trying to calm her at the police station.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 171, 166 and 348 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Gbajumo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N10, 000 and a surety in like sum and
    adjourned the case to April 26 for further hearing

    Auto mechanic charged with defiling co-tenant’s daughter in bathroom

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday in Lagos released a 23-year-old auto mechanic, Ayobami Akindele, on a N250, 000 bail, charged with defiling a 14-year-old girl in the bathroom of their tenement building.

    Akindele, who entered a `not-guilty’ plea to the charge of indecent treatment of a child and defilement, is a resident of Apesin Street, Mushin, Lagos.

    The Magistrate, Mrs F.A. Azeez, who gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail condition.

    She said the sureties, who must be gainfully employed, should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy forwarded to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Emmaunel Ajayi, the accused committed the offence on March 23 at his apartment.

    “The accused sneaked into the bathroom where the girl was bathing and forcefully had a canal knowledge of her.

    “The accused was idling away at the passage when the girl passed with a bucket of water to the bathroom.

    “The girl was crying and was in pain but the accused begged her, promising to give her money.

    “He also covered the girl’s mouth with towel before committing the crime.

    “When the girl’s mother came back home in the evening, her daughter was complaining of stomach ache.

    “As she was trying to find out what went wrong, she discovered blood stains on her clothes.

    “Her mother asked her what happened to her and she told her everything that transpired between her and the accused,” he said.

    The prosecutor said the girl was taken to the hospital and a medical report obtained showed that there was forceful penetration which left her with bruises.

    The offences contravened Sections 137 and 139 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 139 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until May 10 for mention.

    Man, arraigned for stealing phone

    The Police on Thursday arraigned a 32-year-old man, Ahmed Idris, who allegedly pleaded to use the cell phone of a lady to make a call, only to disappear with it.

    Idris, whose residential address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and fraud at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Eruada Victor , told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 28, at Gina Road, Agege, in Lagos.

    Victor said the accused approached the complainant, Blessing Uchenna , and pleaded to make a call with her Techno F9 cell phone valued at N50,000.

    He said that the accused fraudulently collected the phone and made away with it.

    The prosecutor said that the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was apprehended.

    He said the offence contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till April 17 for mention.

    Sales girl in court over theft

    The police on Thursday arraigned a 27-year-old salesgirl, Adewumi Adelani in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, charged with theft of
    N72, 000.

    Adelani, whose residential address was not provided, is facing two-count charge of stealing and fraud.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Akadu Edet, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 8 at Buari Street, Mushin, Lagos.

    He said that the salesgirl stole N72,000 from the shop of her employer, Ganiu Salawu.

    He added that Salawu discovered that Adelani misappropriated proceeds from sales during audit of the shop’s account, an offence that contravened sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Section 285 stipulates three years jail term on conviction.

    However, the defendant pleaded not guiltyand the Magistrate, Mr E.O. Ogunkanmi, granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties must be living within the court’s jurisdiction and have verifiable addresses and adjourned the case until April 26 for further hearing.

     

  • Driver arraigned over theft of vehicle parts

    A 46-year-old driver, Kayode Ajayi, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged stealing of vehicle parts valued at N280,000.

    Ajayi was arraigned before Magistrate O.I. Raji on a count charge.

    The resident of Okeho Street, Dopemu, Lagos, however, pleaded innocence, and was admitted to bail of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused stole the vehicle parts from Mr Majeed Owolabi.

    “He stole a gear worth N130,000; door, N20,000; brainbox, N30,000; four tyres, N80,000; battery, N18,000; and a chair, N2,000,” Nwosu submitted.

    The prosecutor said that Owolabi gave his vehicle to the accused to sell but he stole the parts and absconded.

    “The accused persuaded the complainant (Owolabi) to sell his bus and buy a new one.

    “When the bus was given to the accused to sell, he stole the parts and ran away.

    “When the complainant decided to visit him to see if he had sold the bus, he discovered that some parts of the vehicle had been removed.

    “Efforts by the complainant to see the accused and collect the parts proved unsuccessful until he was arrested,” he said.

    Nwosu submitted that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be jailed for three years if found guilty, according to the provisions of Section 287.

    The case has been adjourned until April 19 for mention.
