    Woman arraigned for assaulting neighbour

    A 35-year-old trader, Helen Ogochukwu, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating her neighbour, Mr. Dotun Shomoye, to a pulp.

    Ogochukwu, who resides at No. 5, Adekoya St., Oshodi, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of assault, willful damage and breach of peace.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Eruada Victor, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 4 at her residence.

    Victor said the accused assaulted her co-tenant, Mr Dotun Shomoye, by beating him to a pulp.

    He said the assault followed an argument between the accused and the complainant, Shomoye.

    He said the accused tore the complainant’s T-shirt valued at N2,000, while the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested.

    The offenses contravened Sections 166, 171 and 337 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 171 and 337 prescribe three-year jail term for assault, and damage.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2,000 with one surety in like sum, one of who must be gainfully employed and show evidence of a two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Further hearing in the case has been fixed for April 12.

  • Man, 29, in court for stealing stepmother’s money

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Tuesday granted N 40,000 bail to a 29-year-old security guard, Tajudeen Rasaki, accused of burgling his stepmother’s room and stealing N58,000.

    Rasaki, who resides at Agbado Road, Iju, Lagos, is facing charges of burglary and theft, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, who granted the accused bail, ordered him to produce two sureties in the like sum.

    She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Kubeinje adjourned the case till April 24 for mention.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Essien Ndarake, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Sept. 12, 2016 at his residence.

    He said that the accused burgled the apartment of his stepmother, Mrs Bose Rasaki to steal N58, 000.

    Ndarake said that the complainant came back from work to discover that the burglar proof at the entrance of her apartment had been destroyed and her room ransacked.

    “What surprised her was that her room door was intact, but when she opened the door with her key, she discovered that the room had been ransacked.

    “She discovered that the money she kept inside her bag in her wardrobe was missing.

    “ A search was conducted and a duplicated key to the complainant’s apartment was found in the accused’s room,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused could bag seven years in prison if found guilty of stealing, based on provisions of Section 307.

    Man docked for damaging co-tenant’s eyes

    A 40-year-old driver, Ikechukwu Offor, who allegedly beat up a co-tenant for not opening the house gate and damaged his eyes, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    A resident of Lagos Street, Agege, Lagos, Offor is being tried for breach of peace and assault.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offences on Feb. 23 at a tenement building.

    He said the accused assaulted a co-tenant, Mr Idowu Onajobi, by beating him and causing damage to both eyes.

    Okuoimose said following an agreement by tenants, the complainant was nominated to be locking the gate at  11.00 p.m. and keep the key.

    “The complainant was nominated by his co-tenants to be locking their gate at 11.00 p.m. as a result of wave of robbery in the area.

    “The accused, who came home late after the gate was locked, started knocking the gate loudly, threatening to destroy it if the gate was not opened for him.

    “When the complainant finally opened the gate, the accused descended on him for the delay.

    “He punched him several times in the eyes and damaged the eyes,” he said.

    He said the complainant was still in the hospital receiving treatment as he could not see clearly.

    The offences contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for assault.

    Offor pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y. O. Ekogbule, adjourned the case until April 17 for mention.

  • Man docked for snatching motorcycle at gunpoint

    For allegedly snatching a motorcycle valued at N400, 000 at gunpoint, a 24-year-old man, Babatunde Sheffiu, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who claimed to be a welder, lives at No. 17, Ologunde St., Awoyaya in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, is facing a two-count-charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Sheffiu, however, denied the charges.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 27, 2016 at about 4.30 p. m. at Ibeju-Lekki.

    According to him, the accused conspired and stole a motorcycle belonging to the complainant, Danjuma Idris.

    He said that the complainant, a commercial motorcyclist, carried the accused and his accomplice still at large from Eputu to Lakowe area of Ibeju- Lekki.

    “The accused and his accomplice told Idris to come to Ona-Osa Bus Stop, and on getting to a lonely path, the accused alighted and paid the complainant.

    “As Idris was about to go, the accused shot him in the leg and hit him on the head with the butt of the gun.

    “The accused took away his motorcycle, believing he was dead, but he was later apprehended by the police.”

    The offences contravened sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 409 provides two years for conspiracy.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Aje Afunwa, who said the sureties must be gainfully employed, adjourned the case until May 8 for trial

     

  • Businessman in court for stabbing colleague with broken bottle

    A 29-year-old businessman, Chukwubuke Nweyeofor, who allegedly stabbed one Mnaduabuchi Nwogu with a broken bottle, was on Monday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused, who resides at No 27, Eligauze St., Ajao Estate, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and assault.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Rita Momoh, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 3, at Ladipo Market, Mushin, Lagos.

    She said that the accused assaulted the complainant by stabbing him with a bottle all over his body.

    “The accused inflicted severe injuries on the complainant,” Momoh said.

    The prosecutor alleged that trouble started after the accused and complainant made N2, 000 profit on a business they did together, and the accused refused to give the complainant his share.

    “They helped a man to buy some motor parts and gained N2, 000 from the business.

    “When the complainant went to get his N1, 000 from the accused, he claimed he had spent it.

    “He insisted on collecting his share of the money, but the accused got angry and used the broken bottle on his eye, head, neck and stomach.

    “The complainant fainted; some traders in the market rushed him to the hospital and reported the matter to the police,” she said.

    The offences contravened Sections 166 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused, according to the provisions of Section 172, may bag as much as four years imprisonment, if found guilty.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mr MKO Fadeyi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until April 5, for mention.

     

  • Two accused for chopping off woman’s ear over N30 `pure’ water

    A businessman, Friday Aigbogun and his lover, Olamide Fashanu, charged with biting off a woman’s ear appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday.

    The accused: Aigbogun, 40, and Fashanu, 26, residents of Adegbule Street, Mushin, Lagos State are facing four counts of a breach of the peace, conspiracy, assault and grievous harm.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Rita Momoh, the accused committed the offences on March 14 at No. 43, Ayantuga St., Mushin.

    She said that the accused conspired to unlawfully assault Mrs Ajoke Wasiu by biting off her right ear completely.

    “The accused beat and inflicted wounds on the complainant’s right ear, “she said.

    Momoh said that the accused went to buy N30 worth of sachet water popularly called `pure-water’ from the complainant.

    “The accused gave the complainant N30 being the cost of three `pure water’, the complainant then gave them the water.

    “But the accused insisted that the complainant must put them inside a nylon bag.

    “The complainant told them that she did not have a nylon bag and they asked for a refund of their money, and she did.

    “The accused started cursing and abusing the complainant calling her unprintable names.

    “And when the complainant responded, the accused grabbed her and started beating her.

    “In the process, the second accused, Fashanu, chopped off the right ear of the complainant with her teeth’’ the prosecutor said.

    The prosecutor said that the part of the ear that was chopped-off was recovered at the scene of the incident.

    She said the offences contravened Sections 166, 171, 243 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 243 prescribes seven years’ jail term for grievous harm.

    The accused pleaded innocence to the counts and were granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    The magistrate, Mr M.K.O. Fadeyi adjourned the case until April 10 for mention.

     

  • NURTW official arraigned for hitting conductor with sharp object

    A 22-year-old union worker, Sunday Olaopa, who allegedly assaulted a conductor by hitting him with a sharp object on his manhood, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Olaopa, an official of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers (NURTW), is standing trial on a one-count charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that the accused, who entered a “not guilty plea, committed the offence on Feb. 23 at Iju Ishaga Garage, Lagos.

    Unah alleged that Olaopa, who resides at Olayinka Street, Ajuwon, Lagos, assaulted the complainant, Ubong Bassey, by using a sharp object to hit him on his manhood.

    He said the accused hit the complainant because he refused to drop his ticket money on time.

    Unah said that Bassey sustained injuries on his manhood, as a result of the sharp object Olaopa used to hit him.

    He said that Bassey reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.

    The offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for assault occasioning harm.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. A.O Gbajumo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing till March 20.

     

  • Manslaughter: Truck driver, gets N500,000 bail

    A 41-year-old truck driver, Garuba Adamu, who allegedly drove his vehicle recklessly and knocked down a pedestrian, Olubukola Ajayi, was on Tuesday released on N500,000 bail on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y.R. Pinheiro, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused two sureties in like sum, one  of who must be a landed property owner in the state.

    Adamu, whose address is unknown, had pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of dangerous driving, driving without licence and manslaughter.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Mathew Akhaluode, told the court that the accused drove recklessly and knocked down Ajayi, who was walking along the road.

    He said Adamu, who drove a truck with registration no. KSF 821 XM, committed the offences at about 7.00 a.m. on Feb. 7 along Ekoro Road, Abule Egba,  a Lagos suburb.

    The accused was alleged to have also damage a tricycle belonging to Abdulkarim Yahaya.

    “A team of traffic management officials rushed to the scene and took the lifeless body of the victim to the hospital.”

    The offences contravened Sections 19, 20 and 28 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The magistrate adjourned the case to March 20 for mention.

  • Teenager arraigned for laptop theft

    A 17-year-old printer, Mustapha Okunola, who allegedly stole two laptops valued at N84,000, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

     

    The accused, who resides in Kajola Street, Mushin, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 21 at Oliyide Street, Mushin,.

    He said the accused unlawfully entered the apartment of Mr Jide Johnson, the complainant, and stole his laptops worth N84, 000.

    “The complainant was trying to sleep when he saw the shadow of somebody running out of his room.

    “He raised alarm and with the help of his neighbours they caught the accused as he attempted to scale the fence.

    “The two laptops were recovered from him and he was immediately handed over to the police,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes a three- year jail term for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N70, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs F. A. Azeez, adjourned the case to March 27 for mention.

  • Tanker driver docked over petrol theft

    A 38-year-old tanker driver, Agboola Biliaminu, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged theft of 1,550 litres of petrol valued at N245,000.

    Biliaminu, 38, who resides at Lafenwa area of Abeokuta of Ogun, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Babaji Ishaku, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 25 at Apapa, Lagos.

    “Biliaminu conspired with others now at large to steal 1,550 litres of fuel valued at N254,000, property of Jimlam Freight Services Ltd., Apapa, Lagos,’’ Ishaku said.

    He alleged that the accused stole the product out of the 33,000 litres of petrol he was directed to deliver in Akure, Ondo, from the Apapa depot.

    “It was discovered that the tanker driver conspired with his motor boy and siphoned 1,550 litres from the 33, 000 litres.

    “The product stolen from the tank was valued at N245,000,’’ he said

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adegun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said that the sureties must be property owners in Lagos.

    Adegun adjourned the case to Mach 17 for trial.
