  • Jigawa spends N650m on fertiliser, chemicals

    The Jigawa State government has bought agriculture input worth N650 million for sale to farmers at subsidised rate during the farming season.

    The General Manager, Jigawa Agricultural Supply Company (JASCO), Alhaji Mohammed Lana stated this during an interview in Dutse.

    He explained that the input included assorted fertiliser, farm chemicals, made up of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.

    According to him, N550 million was spent on the procurement of 500 metric tonnes of while N100 million was spent on 6000 litres of farm chemicals.

    Lana said the input had been kept at JASCO stores across the 27 Local Government Areas of the state for farmers to buy.

    “Each bag of NPK fertiliser costs N7,500 in the open market but the state government sells to farmers at N5,500 only, indicating a  subsidy of N2000.

    “The aim of the present administration in the state is to encourage farmers to produce more food for local commercial and commercial purposes,” he said.

  • Nigeria’s agricultural revolution on course – Buhari

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Auyo, Jigawa State, said that Nigeria’s agricultural revolution is real and on course.

    He spoke at an event marking the commencement of the rehabilitation and expansion of the 6,000-hectare Hadejia Valley irrigation project in the state.

    President Buhari, according to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, also assured Nigerians that his administration would sustain the positive momentum in the sector by implementing the right policies and providing the needed financial resources for people-oriented projects.

    The President, who is in Jigawa State for a two-day working visit, expressed delight that the Federal Government’s economic diversification and inclusive growth programmes were yielding positive results, particularly in key food-producing states.

    He applauded the World Bank’s assistance to the project, which when completed would increase water availability for all-season farming in the State and beyond.

    Also speaking, the Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu explained that works on the Phase One of the project which started in the early eighties during the administration of President Shehu Shagari and received some funding under the Petroleum Special Trust Fund had suffered frequent abandonment due to lack of funds.

    Adamu said with N9.6 billion allocated under the $495 million World Bank-assisted Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project in five different irrigation locations in Nigeria, the project would be completed by 2021.

    ‘‘By the time the project is finished in three years, there would be about 6,000 hectares of farmland and the Jigawa State Government also plans to key into the project that will benefit over 25,000 farmers,’’ the Minister said.

    In Jigawa, the President commissioned the 42-kilometre Tasheguwa-Guri Road and the 32-kilometre Abunabo-Kadira-Guri road constructed by the State government to facilitate easier movement and evacuation of farm produce.

    President Buhari also commissioned the 250,000 solar- powered water supply schemes.

    The project is one out of nine of such projects which will add nine million litres to daily water supply in Dutse and environs.

  • Emir to Buhari: Killings targeted at embarrassing your govt

    The Emir of Katsina Alhaji Mohammadu Kabir Usman Monday in Katsina told visiting President Muhammadu Buhari that the spate of killings that is ravaging the country and threatening national security is sponsored and targeted at embarrassing his government and undermine his re-election bid

    He said ’’those who doesn’t want you re-elected and who doesn’t want your government to succeed are behind the current killings ravaging the country. It is designed to discredit and bring down your government but they will not succeed. We will continue to pray for you and therefore urge Nigerians to join us in praying’’

    The emir while re-iterating that the solution to the present national challenges lies in corporate prayers, called on Nigerians and lovers of democracy to offer fervent prayers and seek divine intervention to the present national predicament

    While responding, President Buhari told the emir he came to the palace to console him over the death of the chief Imam of Katsina mosque, Alhaji Mohammadu Lawal who was a bosom friend and a devoted Muslim

    He assured the emir that his government will remain undeterred in delivering on his campaign promises and tackling current security challenges in the country

    Meanwhile the Katsina state government has also joined in mourning the death of the renowned Islamic cleric and Chief Imam of Katsina Central Mosque Muhammadu Lawal.

    In a statement signed by his SSA Media Abdu Labaran, Governor Masari described the death of the highly respected and learned Islamic cleric as a devastating loss not only to Katsina State, but to the Islamic world, adding that the gravity of the loss will be felt beyond the shores of Nigeria in view of the vastness and depth of his knowledge.

    Governor Masari also described the deceased as a simple, humble and serious Islamic teacher whose tutelage extended beyond Nigeria, even as he called on Islamic clerics to emulate the life led by the deceased.

    While condoling the Emir of Katsina and Daura, the immediate family and disciples of the deceased, as well as the people of Katsina state and the Muslim community at large, the Governor prayed to Allah to forgive him all his shortcomings and make paradise his final resting place.

    The 95 year old cleric, who was said to have died of old age related sickness, has since been buried same day according to Islamic rites. He is survived by 22 children

    President Buhari has since left Katsina State for Jigawa state Monday.

  • Buhari to visit Jigawa May 7

    President Muhammadu Buhari is to pay a one-day official visit to Jigawa on May 7, Gov. Muhammad Badaru, has said.

    Badaru, who made the disclosure while interacting with journalists in Dutse on Tuesday, said during the visit, the President was expected to commission some projects.

    He said the state government had made arrangements to give President Buhari a rousing welcome to the state.

    The governor explained that the `August visitor’ will inaugurate some roads and water projects within and outside the state capital during the visit.

    According to him, the President will also flag-off the operations of the state social committee which was recently established by law.

    Badaru stated that under the law, each of the 287 polling units across the state will receive a token of between N50, 000, and N100, 000, monthly as stipends to rehabilitate critical infrastructure including health care, education and other facilities in the area.

    The governor said the President will also inaugurate the revived dairy products processing company in Birnin Kudu as well as commission the newly constructed 80 health care facilities.

    He said facilities were put in place by the state government in line with the Federal Government’s policy of providing at least one health care facility in each political ward of the country.

    Badaru, therefore, urged residents of the state to come out enmasse to give Buhari a rousing welcome.

  • Jigawa procures 5,000 metric tonnes of NPK fertiliser

    Alhaji Kabiru Ali, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Agriculture, said on Tuesday that the state had procured 5,000 metric tonnes of NPK fertilisers for the 2018 cropping season.

    Ali who made this known while speaking with newsmen in Dutse, Jigawa capital, said that the state government would no longer allocate fertilizer directly to anyone.

    He said that the measure was to remove any obstacle that might hinder farmers from accessing the commodity on time.

    “I have just taken delivery of 5,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser and I have about 2,000 metric tonnes in stock and it is of very good quality, he said.

    He explained that the fertiliser would be sold to the farmers at the Federal Government’s approved rate of N5, 500 per bag.

    “If a farmer has his money, he can just walk into any of our stores and buy at the cost of N5,500 per bag.

    “There is no limitation to this. A bigger farmer can buy as many bags as he can afford; so this is our intention,’’ he said.

    The commissioner further said that farmers could obtain the commodity from any of the Jigawa State Agricultural Supply Company ( JASCO ) stores in their local government areas.

    According to Ali, the ministry is also planning to procure urea fertiliser for the wet season farming programme.

    “Now I am discussing with my chief executives how to procure urea; urea is the type of fertiliser that is needed at a later time of the season.

    “That is why we started with the procurement of NPK. We will source 3,000 metric tonnes of the urea, as we have 1,500 metric tonnes of it in stock already,’’ Ali added.

  • Saraki, Tambuwal won’t decamp to PDP – Badaru

    Jigawa State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC)  Convention Committee Chairman, Abubakar Badaru, on Monday assured that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, won’t leave the party.

    He spoke with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

    According to him, he was not aware of alleged moves and negotiation by some APC members to decamp to the opposition parties.

    On Saraki and Tambuwal, he said “It is not true that Tambuwal and Saraki are negotiating with the PDP, we have not heard of that. Some few weeks back there was rumour about the governor of Benue and he made it clear at our last NEC that he is not moving anywhere. Those are rumours flying around but they don’t have consequence.

    “We are united, governor Tambuwal is with us and the Distinguished Senator Bukola Saraki, the Senate President is also with APC and we have not had any reason to think that they are negotiating elsewhere, no.” he said

    On what Nigerians should expect from the APC convention, he said “We expect a peaceful and rancour free and good convention.

    Speaking on the move to unite the factions in the party, he said “They are all united and I am sure the convention will bring everybody together and in democracy if you are open and straight forward, things get done well, I don’t think there should be any problem.”

    He said that what happened during the APC rally in his state at the weekend was normal.

    He said “Political unrest, no it is not true. It is normal political shaunting. Shunting between groups that are contesting the same position. People passing by and some groups will shunt for their own and others will shunt for another person and that was what happened. That was a great rally.

    “It is normal in every gathering, you have different supporters supporting different people contesting the same position.” he stated

  • Jigawa targets 500 cataract patients for free surgery

    The Ministry of Health in Jigawa state in collaboration with International Islamic Relief Organization on Wednesday began screening of 500 cataract patients targeted for free surgery.

    Dr Abba Zakari, the state Commissioner for Health disclosed this in an interview with the newsmen in Dutse.

    Zakari said the gesture is to identify persons with cataract related disease for possible surgery and assist in restoring their sights.

    The commissioner said that the international relief organization would conduct the cataract surgery on 500 patients in the state from April 28 to May 2.

    Zakari explained that 20 beneficiaries would be selected from each of the 27 local government areas of the state.

    Also commenting, the Coordinator, Eye Care and Neglected Tropical Diseases in the ministry, Dr Abdur-Rahman Ashiru said the exercise would be conducted in Dutse, the state capital.

    Ashiru said that selected beneficiaries would be transported to the site by their respective local government councils.

  • Two die, three Injured as borrow pit collapses in Jigawa

    The Jigawa state police command confirmed the death of two persons after a borrow pit collapsed on them while digging for building soil in Baruma village of Babura Local Government Area in the state.

    This was contained in a press statement issue, signed and made available to THE NATION in Dutse, the state capital by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdul Jinjiri, said another three others sustained various degrees of injuries in the incident which occurred yesterday (Monday) at around 1:40 pm.

    According to the statement those died were Mati Bako, 17, and Tanimu

    Kwalle, 25, died on the spot while Sani Haruna, 31, Aliyu Yusuf, 30 and Nazifi Yusuf sustained various degrees of injuries.

    Jinjiri maintained that the remain of the‎ deceased had since been released to their relations for burial while the injured were receiving treatment at the General Hospital Babura. “Police received the information of an incident involving five people, all male. Two out of the victims died on the spot while three others were injured and now receiving treatment in the hospital.

    “Victims and corpses were taken to hospital by the police. Victims were confirmed dead by a medical Doctor and they have been released to the their relatives for  burial. No foul play was suspected.”

  • Jigawa pilgrims’ board begins training of 2018 intending pilgrims

    In preparations of free and fair Hajj exercise the Jigawa State Pilgrim Welfare Board has commenced trainings for its intending Pilgrims for the 2018 Hajj exercise in Dutse the state capital.

    Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairman of the board, Alhaji Ali Yahya Jahun  urged them to carry the lessons serious during the training against the forthcoming Hajj operation and avoid anything that can contradict the reasons of being in the Holy land

    During his lecture, Malam Yusha’u Abubakar Dutse has further appealed to the intending pilgrims to strictly obey any rule pass on to them by the scholars from Nigeria and the Holy land.

    He said in Islam there is nothing left untought to mankind unless if one does not want to learn. As the title of the lecture which is the need for discipline and obedience in Islam.

    Also the second lecture presented by Malam Auwal Muhammad Ringim themed the blessings and benefit of going to Madina by pilgrims. “While in Marina, the pilgrims are expected to obey all rules and directives, because one is forbidden to cut down any tree or involving in anything not worthy of doing such as hunting”.

    He used the occasion to call on those intending to come forward and start depositing their money. “Each person can deposite not less than N1.5 Million, so by the grace of Allah the fee may not exceed the normal one”.
