Ondo State cannot afford to be at war with itself, writes Jimoh Ibrahim

The events in Ondo State will soon play out the thesis that liberalism is for absolute peace for the security of humanity. It is needless to engage in war for the peace of the state, and the realist that triggers war in Ondo State must be ready for collaboration and cooperation as President Tinubu posited; in any event, difficult times don’t last long. Ondo State cannot afford to be at war with itself. Regrettably, the realists at the centre of power accumulation in Ondo State are epiphenomena. We know their master, and it is in the democratic peace arena that we shall be engaging their power by democratic votes! They may get no votes in the reality of a democratic election measurable to the power they need now. Otherwise, they should challenge Aketi in a new election and become the Governor!! President Tinubu took power even when the maximum ruler and the head of the realists in Daura kept petrol and currency from 200 million people! President Tinubu was sure of himself as a liberal democrat.

Let us not forget that “politics is a power struggle.” Even in the most hospitable circumstances, the human condition is precarious because we are all unavoidably exposed. Yes, as Hobbes in ‘States of Nature,’ every human being is a potential threat because the struggle for survival in a world of limited resources is a ‘war of all against all.’ Hobbes thought that putting a government in place is an excellent way of guaranteeing security! In a world without a government to enforce order – a condition that Hobbes calls the state of nature – every human must be vigilant against threats to survival. A world without Government, he claims, forces humanity into a constant state of war because there is no way to trust in the excellent or peaceful intentions of others. We must always be on our guard lest we be attacked. This condition – in which no ruler or judge can resolve disputes and establish security – is anarchy. In a lawless world, Hobbes argues that our lives must revolve around survival, leaving no time for agriculture, the arts, or sciences conditions of anarchy; Hobbes says, ‘the life of man [is] solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short”.

As I replied to Hobbes in my PhD War thesis, it is also the case that the Hobbesian phenomenon underscores man’s aggressiveness in the state of nature that requires the leviathan’s intervention. In the face of the Buhari government, Boko Haram created a condition in the Northeast that makes the life of man [is] solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short”—a celebration of the leviathan’s failure.

Aketi case is not that of abuse of power as we saw in Darfur, where Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC) with war crimes against humanity. There is a Government in Ondo State. Aketi is not the Government but the Head of that Government. We have never had issues with the apparatus of Government and Governance (apologies to the sociologists). Aketi will be back, and this time shall pass!

  • Newswatch: Jimoh Ibrahim wins at Appeal Court

The Court of Appeal in Lagos has set aside the judgement of the Federal High Court delivered  on October 20, 2014and affirmed billionaire businessman  Jimoh Ibrahim as the legal owner of Newswatch.

In a unanimous judgement read by Justice Tijjani Abubakar , the three-man panel of justices said the appeal by lbrahim ” is meritorious and it is hereby allowed. ”

The judgement was delivered on March 20, this year. Other justices on the panel were Justice Garba Abubakar and Justice Abimbola Obaseki – Adejumo.

The  justices further said that the trial judge misdirected himself on the issue of the payment of the sum of 510 million Naira for the shares of the company .

They further ruled that the issue of payment for the share ” becomes res judicata ” since the payment was already litigated upon and Justice Abang has ruled that payment of the said sum was made by Jimoh Ibrahim to the former owners of the company in accordance with clause 6.0 of the share purchase agreement ..

In the light of the above , they declared that the company was validly acquired.

The Court further held that all the conditions of the Share Purchase Agreement particularly clause 6.0 were adequately complied with before Jimoh Ibrahim was admitted into the board of the company and subsequently elected as the chairman.

” lt is without any doubt, that the lower court erred when it held that 510 million was not paid for the shares, ” the justices said.

Justice Abubakar declared :  “I think the learned trial Judge apparently missed the point when he only considered questions submitted via originating summons without considering the other processes filed wherein which constitute an integral part of the records before him, particularly the defendant affidavit.”

The Appeal Court also ruled that the trial judge Buba J of the Federal High Court erred when he held that the “doctrine of estoppel” is not applicable in the present case.

Ibrahim won the ownership case at a  Federal High Court  . The matter was re-litigated by the defendants before another Federal High Court Court presided over  Buba J who ruled in favour of  Ray Ekpu, Dan Agbese, Yakubu Mohammed and others.

Ibrahim appealed against the judgement . In a unanimous decision, the appeal court declared that the trial judge ought to have respected the judgement of his learned brother of co-ordinate jurisdiction.

Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo  said:  “ipso facto, l  agree with the reasoning expressed in the lead judgement that where a judgement has been delivered by a court, same cannot be subject to review by another court of co-ordinate jurisdiction”

An elated Ibrahim yesterday said the judgement had now settled the issue of the ownership of Newswatch  He said ” it now beyond contest that  the ownership validly rests in me. ”

In his reaction to the Appeal Court Judgement Ibrahim commended the appeal court and said that “he lost no sleep on the ownership of the company for a day”

He said  the judgement has resolved what he called ” the noisy convergence of complexities ” arising from the sale and acqisition of Newswatch.

“Nigerians now know the truth,” he said, adding that ” the magazine will soon return to newsstands. ”

He dedicated the judgement to the staff of Newswatch, vendors, readers and advertisers who are the victim of the denial of payment of N510million.

  • Jimoh Ibrahim to fly 200 friends to Oxford

Great people know that to succeed, one must constantly be on the move, looking out for new things, innovating and discovering virgin terrains. They have the eagle eyes to detect, even from a distance, ventures that will yield fruits and those that might bring ruin.

Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim is one of such fellows. He is blessed with a discriminating acumen that tells him when to move on from old loves and embrace new ones. Thus, as the embers of his dying oil business gave off another fatal whiff, he shelved sentimental attachment to the venture that had fetched him much. He sold most of his fuel stations to Dapo Abiodun, the Chairman of Heyden Oil, who was all too glad to acquire them.

Having got rid of the once beloved child that had become a burden, Jimoh moved like the conquering heroes of yore into global banking and investment. To say he has enjoyed success in this regard would be to state the obvious. His thriving investment banks in Hong Kong, Ghana and Sao Tome now stand as testimonies to his genius and foresight.

Now the toast of many governments, Barrister Ibrahim has a palatial residence in Dubai where he has been named as an official investor in the country because of his large real estate holdings there. As if these accomplishments were not enough, he would also be graduating from the University of Oxford in May and has resolved to fly a 200-strong contingent to the event.

  • Jimoh Ibrahim, wife in differing birthday soirees

It is no longer news that billionaire businessman and chairman of Global Feet Jimoh Ibrahim turned 50 in February. What many people don’t know is that his lovely wife of many years, Modupe, is only a few weeks younger than him and has since joined him in the 50s’ club. She marked her birthday two weeks ago too.

The most interesting part, however, is how the couple marked their respective birthdays. Jimoh, a business mogul, had to make do with a birthday devoid of any formal celebration because he was in the UK pursuing another master’s degree in addition to the pile of degrees in his kitty.

Still, the philanthropist must have thought that his birthday was a good time to reward himself the same way he has been rewarding others. Hence he bought himself a customised Rolls Royce which was believed to have set his pocket back by a whopping N300 million.

On her own part, Modupe, unencumbered by any academic pursuit, invited the cream of the high society to a birthday bash which took place at the couple’s Victoria Garden City residence. There was a lot of fanfare and merriments at the high octane event which featured performances by popular musicians.

“We have nothing to lose as the Supreme Court will sit on the case on Friday. We shall get justice and if PDP wins Saturday’s election, we shall have our four years mandate to rule Ondo State,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the businessman as saying in the statement.

“Let me advise you not to abuse anyone or fight over this one day ruling, which was paid for from the state treasury.

“Mimiko will not succeed himself with Jegede. This is too sure, let’s continue with our work and remain in our great party, the PDP.”
