  • Kalu and Arewa youths

A joint press conference was last week addressed by former Abia State governor, Orji Kalu and a delegation of Arewa youths led by Shettima Yerima. It was the outcome of a meeting between Kalu and the group on how to douse the tension generated by the notice issued to the Igbo to quit the north by October 1.

The meeting which was at the instance of Kalu, was part of his personal contributions to the peace-building process in the country following the tension generated by hate speeches especially since the Arewa youths came out with their threat. Kalu is within his rights to show concern to the potent danger which that unfortunate order poses to the peace and unity of the country. It is also in keeping with peace initiatives by acting President, Yemi Osinbajo and other well meaning people of this country.

As a key figure in Igboland, Kalu should be very concerned about what the order portends for his people should the Arewa youths make good their threat to quit them from the north and confiscate their properties. They had while issuing the threat, ordered commencement of inventory of all properties owned by the Igbo in the north possibly to appropriate them albeit, illegally. Should they make good their threat, the Igbo and possibly other southerners in the north are bound to suffer immeasurably. It could also come with deleterious consequences for the continued existence of this country.

So Kalu is in a good stead to engage the youths especially if they will listen to him as their meeting appeared to have shown. Who knows where the saviour will come from?  But his intervention should be rightly seen as his personal contribution to the raging discussions on how to get the nation out of its current impasse. He is entitled to it more so in a democracy. That is the much credit that can be ascribed to that parley for now.

From the utterances of Yerima, it would seem the parley achieved a direct opposite result. It struck at once, as a counterproductive engagement. The erroneous impression conveyed was that the meeting centred round a plea to the so-called coalition of Arewa youths to rescind their threat to quit the Igbo by the threatened deadline. And if one may ask, is it in the place of those threatened to go cap in hand begging a faceless group not to resort to lawlessness in appropriating challenges to the Nigerian state that are clearly outside their competences? Are we not according undue recognition to that group and their resort to lawlessness in addressing perceived grievances even when they are yet to demonstrate how the subject matter solely affects them?

At a time people are still at a loss as to why Yerima is still walking the streets free despite the order to arrest him by Kaduna State governor for his incendiary statements, it is an irony of sorts that we are now playing host to such a character. No doubt, Yerima and his co-travellers committed a grave offence against the peace and unity of the country. If Kalu had met with them in private and confined their discussions as a personal affair, nobody would have bothered.

But to have organized a joint press conference whose outcome ended up massaging the ego of Yerima, amounts to an insult to the sensibility of the Igbo he unfairly disparaged in that ill-fated outing. He neither sounded conciliatory but rather displayed such arrogance that suggests the fate of the Igbo in the north is in his hands. He was neither remorseful nor did he sound sufficiently reconciliatory. And one begins to wonder if his posturing at that press conference was a true reflection of the outcome of their discussions with Kalu.

Hear him, “I do not remember specifically saying we are going to finally withdraw the quit notice. No certainly not. But you can be rest assured that those who believe in Nigeria should remain where they are and be assured of their safety. But to those who don’t believe in Nigeria, we cannot guarantee their safety”. If this was the outcome of the meeting, it is better it never held.

If Kalu acquiesced to the joint press conference with the hope that his intervention has yielded positive result, he must have been shocked by the pigheadedness and arrogance of Yerima as clearly shown above. Kalu must have felt sufficiently embarrassed by the rant of Yerima that he had to advise southerners living in the north not to entertain any fear about their safety. The advice is a clear indication that nothing was achieved and southerners needed to be reassured about their safety in the north. But that changes nothing as Yerima has said unequivocally that those dubbed non believers in Nigeria are at grave risk in the north.

One then begins to wonder what that press conference was intended to achieve. It struck as another window for Yerima to reinforce his earlier threat. If he needed to reinforce that threat, it was patently inappropriate to use a forum provided by an Igbo leader to do that. He has told everybody that his group will not guarantee the safety of those who do not believe in Nigeria. That should not be treated with levity. It is a reinforcement of the earlier threat and he may have been emboldened by the inability of the security agencies to bring him to book just as they did to Nnamdi Kanu whose activities Yerima and his group are seemingly protesting.

We have had all manner of rationalization as to why Yerima and his co-travellers have not been arrested. We have been treated to all manner of theories on how to de-escalate the tension in the land and how further arrests would not serve the best interest of this nation at the moment. That can as well be. But we are yet to be told the effect of such a standpoint in reining in purveyors of hate speeches and division. And as we have seen, such a posturing has had the net effect of emboldening the likes of Yerima to carry on as if they are above the law.

Yerima said his group will not guarantee the safety of those who do not believe in Nigeria. By interpolation, at the expiry of his deadline, Arewa youths will set the machinery in motion to sieve those who believe in Nigeria from those who do not. Perhaps, after that exercise, they will now sack the non believers from the north and confiscate their property. There could be other consequences since he talked of their inability to guarantee the safety of the latter.

The first problem with this posturing lies in the propriety of the powers they intend to exercise. On whose behalf and under whose authority does the group intend to appropriate the powers to begin the questionable voyage into sieving believers and non believers in Nigeria? What right if any do they have to dabble into such normative questions? And what are the parameters for such a nebulous engagement?

It can therefore be discerned from the inherent contradictions in these posers that the Yerima-led group is a bunch of confused people who do not need to be dignified they way Kalu did. This is Yerima who boasted soon after the ill-fated Kaduna outing that his image in the north soured after his threat order. Will he not see this as another evidence of his revved up image?

Yerima is looking for cheap popularity and if he must get it, it is not for those he threatened and abused to provide him that platform. It is not for the Igbo to dissuade the Arewa group from sacking them and taking advantage of their property. If they intend carrying out their order, it is for them to determine. You cannot threaten to take what rightly belongs to me as a citizen and I go on my knees to beg you not to do so. No! It cannot go that way.

Kalu may not have foreseen these contradictions. But, that is where the situation has now left us especially given the arrogance and non conciliatory posturing of the character that he had in audience. If he must continue in this direction, then he should open new windows of discussion with his contemporaries and other leaders in the north whom Yerima and his group are drawing strength from. But the issues are so weighty and fundamental to be handled single-handedly.

  • Biafra agitation affecting Southeast’s economy, says Kalu

Biafra agitation affecting Southeast’s economy, says Kalu

    •Ex-Governor meets with Arewa youths

Former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu said yesterday that the agitation for a sovereign state of Biafra was adversely affecting Southeast’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Kalu spoke in Abuja at a joint news conference with members of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) after a meeting.

He said he opened up consultations with the group following issuing of threats and counter-threats in the country.

The former governor said the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was not the only one talking about Biafra.

He said he had access to other agitators and would keep talking to them.

“It is an issue of great concern to the region; the young people on the street do not know the damage the Biafra agitation does to the GDP of the region.

“The GDP of the area has gone down grossly; I am an entrepreneur and I know it.

“Cameroon, Chad, Niger and others used to buy goods from Aba; now how many of them still go there?

“We resolved this issue when I was the governor of Abia; I resolved it with Ralph Uwazulike and he listened; we will speak with Nnamdi Kanu and he will listen.’’

Kalu said the diversity and demography of Nigeria was its strength.

According to him, every part of the country has something to offer for its development, anybody who thinks otherwise is making mistake.

The former governor urged the group to support the call for restructuring since it did not mean breaking up the country.

“Nigeria needs to restructure economically and other wise. Many states cannot pay salaries.

“We need to put more money on capital projects; I recommend 25 per cent for recurrent and 75 per cent for capital.

“If the federal and state governments had invested in agriculture, the North should be making about 150 billion dollars from agriculture yearly.

“This is the only country that traverses from Atlantic Ocean to Sahara desert; some people are asking God to give them just one; we have to keep the country united,’’ he said.

He thanked the Chairman of CNG Shettima Yerima, for coming for the meeting, adding that there would be further consultations to reach a common ground.

Kalu assured southerners living in the North that they were safe and Nigeria was also safe.

Yerima said he had been engaging with Kalu via telephone since the quit notice issue came up.

Yerima, who is also the Chairman of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, said Kalu had shown a lot of concern and was worried that the unity of Nigeria was being threatened.

The groups, few months ago, issued the threat  following the agitations for the State of Biafra by the IPOB.

According to Yerima, since the threat was issued lot of things have changed.

He said many prominent traditional and religious rulers, governors and well-meaning Nigerians have spoken to the groups.

Stressing that they believed in one united Nigeria, he said more consultations are ongoing after which they will carry out a review and give the final position on the threat.

According to him, the youths were not in a hurry to withdraw the threat.

Shettima said: “The public might think probably this is the first time we are meeting; certainly no. We’ve been talking on phone ever since this issue of ultimatum came. He (Kalu) has been engaging us in talking until today that we agreed to honour his invitation and to also speak to the public.

“His worries and concern was basically on the issue of how do we maintain the unity of this country in line with the present situation of things in the country. It is only those who are blind or ignorant that will say the unity of this country is not being threatened.

“It has been threatened, but you have prominent Nigerians, people like him who have shown a lot of concern and worried over the situation.”

  • We’ve gone past quit notice, says Kalu

We’ve gone past quit notice, says Kalu

A former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu yesterday said Nigeria has “gone past quit notice” as the various ethnic groups that make up the country have lived harmoniously for many years.

Kalu, who was referring to the quit notice issued by Arewa youths to the Igbo in the North, said the nation should “do everything possible” to strengthen Nigeria’s unity.

The former governor, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, noted that Nigeria has come to stay, but suggested that the country should go back to regionalism.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain said no strong politician would promote ethnicity.

He said all hands must be on deck to strengthen Nigeria’s unity.

Kalu said he would continue to preach One Nigeria, and “talk about the virtues of President Muhammadu Buhari”.

He added: “As long as I remain an APC member, I will continue to espouse the ideas and good qualities of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Kalu also said President Buhari would come back healthier, adding that Nigerians should pray for him.

The former governor called for a strong and independent Judiciary, saying it would promote the rule of law.

He noted that an upright Judiciary is necessary because it is the bedrock of any society and the last hope of the common man.

Kalu said any issue between the Executive and the Legislature could always be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties, if the Judiciary is independent.

Kalu, Kanu, others preach national unity

Two prominent Igbo leaders, Chief Orji UzorKalu and Admiral Ndubusi Kanu (rtd), have advised the citizenry to restrain from acts and utterances that could lead to the country’s disintegration.

They urged Nigerians, irrespective of tribe and religion, to emphasise issues that will unite the country.

They spoke yesterday in Lagos at the 24th anniversary of June 12, 1993 presidential election organised by the National Coordinator of Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams.

The election, which was widely believed to have been won by the late Chhief M.K.O. Abiola, was annulled by former military President General Ibrahim Babangida.

Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, said Nigerians should stop quarrelling over religion and ethnic differences that are fuelling the crisis in the country.

Kalu, who was the chairman of the event, noted that during the struggle for the restoration of Abiola’s mandate, he fought alongside the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), even though he was not a member.

Kanu, a former military governor of Lagos State said Nigeria should revert to regional system as it was in the First Republic when all resources were controlled by the regions and developed at their own pace.

Adams said the June 12 has gone down in history as the birthday of the revolution that swept the Nigerian military back to the barracks.

According to him, “General Ibrahim Babangida, then Head of State and author of the annulment, has not been able to live down that error of judgment. It was the final error that also consumed his government, forcing him to step aside”.

Kalu’s name not on Slok directors’ list, says witness

A COMPLIANCE Officer at First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Toyosi Ekorhi, has told a Federal High Court in Lagos that former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu’s name was not listed as a director of Slok Nigeria Limited.

Ekorhi testified yesterday as the fifth witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its trial of Kalu and two others for alleged fraud.

The agency arraigned Kalu, Udeh Jones Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Ltd last October 31 before Justice Mohammed Idris on a 34-count charge of N3.2 billion fraud.

It alleged that the former governor laundered the money through Slok Ltd.

The defendants pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.

At the resumption of yesterday’s proceedings, Ekorhi, who said she joined FCMB on October 13, 2008, was led in examination-in-chief by prosecution counsel Rotimi Jacobs.

The witness stated that the bank forwarded everything concerning the account status of Slok to the EFCC in response to an enquiry over same from the anti-graft agency about two months ago.

She said the documents were retrieved from the archives of the defunct Inland Bank Plc., but that she had no knowledge of its contents because she never worked at Inland Bank.

According to her, the company’s statements of account with FCMB concerning transactions done between August 27, 2008 and November 12, 2012 were also sent to the EFCC.

Under cross-examination by Kalu’s lawyer, Chief Gordy Uche (SAN), the witness said the former governor’s name was not listed in the firm’s records with the bank, as one of the directors of Slok Nigeria Ltd.

The name of the second defendant, Udeh Jones Udeogu, she added, was also not listed as a signatory to the company’s account.

Justice Idris adjourned further hearing till today to allow for cross-examination of the witness by Slok Nigeria Ltd’s counsel, K. C. Nwofor (SAN).

Orji Uzor Kalu’s daughter weds in style

The average man’s most heartfelt wish is to achieve his dreams. His second is to help his children achieve theirs. After conquering the business and political worlds, former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, was a delighted man last Saturday as he helped his beautiful daughter, Neya, to achieve her dream of getting married after many years of heartache and false dawns.

For a while it seemed like her wedding with Lawrence Iyere would end in disappointment the same way it did with ladies’ man and boss of Ceecon Oil & Gas, EFCC investigations, Chima Anyaso. Fears were heightened when the traditional wedding, slated for December last year, was suddenly postponed.

But last Saturday, the lovebirds, who met while Neya was pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Buckingham, finally exchanged vows at the church wedding held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Victoria Island, Lagos. This was followed by a colourful reception at the Federal Palace Hotel, with many eminent personalities in attendance.

  • Kalu champions Buhari’s agric policy

    Kalu champions Buhari’s agric policy

President Muhammadu Buhari has found a worthy ally and voice in former governor of Abia State Orji Uzor Kalu. On his 57th birthday, Chief Kalu stepped away from his Abuja mansion, even shunned his comfortable country home, choosing his two hectares farm to eat his birthday cake. At the farm, his aides and well-heeled friends were nowhere in sight, only his farm workers.

It was just the way the former governor liked it. It was probably also the way Mr President liked it.

Taking office as president two years ago, the commander-in-chief stressed the need for Nigerians to return to the farm, arguing that for the country to overcome its dependence on crude oil the clear path to follow is agriculture.

While many Nigerians were still dragging their feet, the former governor and successful businessmen and stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has heeded the President’s call.

Kalu did not only drive the farm tractor to till the land, he equally joined his farm workers to cut and plant cassava stems in the ridges. He inspected other activities on the farm.

Spending the day on the farm with their boss was not enough for the farm workers, who also pleaded with him to join them in cutting a beautiful cake they made for him.

Kalu, who for over 20 years have refused to celebrate his birthday in any form, was filled with emotion seeing the love shown to him by people on his payroll. He obliged them to cut the birthday cake.

The former governor was later joined on the farm by some of his associates who had gone to his Camp Neya house and on learning that he was at the farm, came over to identify with him.

Speaking to newsmen after inspecting ongoing work at the farm, Kalu said that he decided to mark his birthday in the farm with his workers as a way of heeding the call by President Buhari for Nigerians to go back to the farm not to only produce enough food for the people, but also to boost the nation’s economy.

According to Kalu, over the years he had never celebrated his birthday openly but decided to do that this year in the farm to encourage Nigerians to go back to the land.

He said that time had passed when farming was left only in the hands of peasant farmers who he said lacked both the financial capability and the technical knowhow to produce enough to feed the nation, not to talk of exporting.

“Time has passed when farming was left in the hands of those with little or no knowledge about farming. I live in Abuja and also have so many businesses across the globe. But because of the seriousness I attach to farming, I decided to come home to farm. The rich and those that have the professional training should join in the campaign in ensuring that there is abundance of food in the country.”

He disclosed that he would be planting cassava only at his over two hectares farmland at Okafia Igbere while another two hectares of land at Ugwueke would be used to plant palm seedlings.

Kalu, who has keen interest in taking the youths off the streets through gainful employment, said that he was optimistic that the two farms would also create jobs for many youths in Bende Local Government Area and the state.

He urged the well-to-do and those with the technical knowhow in the country to heed the call of the President.

  • Wabara, Kalu, others grace church’s 150th anniversary

Wabara, Kalu, others grace church’s 150th anniversary

Ohambele in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State has a lot to celebrate. It has produced successful people in business and politics, one stand-out scion being former Senate President Hon Adolphus Wabara.

One sore area, though, is its forbidding roads, the Aba-Azumini probably the most worrisome. In fact, commuters have been bickering with the contractor handling the federal road project.

But on April 23, not even the road could discourage dignitaries who turned up in the ancient kingdom to mark the 150th anniversary of Ohambele’s other icon, the St. Paul’s Anglican Church of Ukwa Diocese. Former governor of the state Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu led the way, and with him were Hon. Donatus Nwankpa (APC State chairman), Comrade Chris Akomas (former Abia Deputy Governor) Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, Chief Nyerere Ayim (APC Abia governorship candidate in 2015), Hon. Sam Nkire (APC BoT member), Mascott Uzor Kalu (former Abia Chief of Staff), and Chief Marshal Wokocha of Modum Associates Limited, among others. They joined the members of the Ohambele Archdeaconry of St. Paul’s to celebrate its 150 years of existence.

The church, founded in 1865 by early missionaries and European traders, has retained its aesthetics and continued to play its role: winning souls. The church has produced sons and daughters who are ordained priests in both Anglican Church, Methodist and other churches.

The event lasted for three days with a rally on April 21 and free medical care the following day, closing on Sunday 23 with a thanksgiving and fund-raise.

The event was also used to honour about 37 persons, including Sir Adolphus Wabara, his brother and former CEO of Hallmark Bank, Marcus Wabara, the oldest lay reader of the church, and Chief Monday Nnah, among others, who have contributed to the growth of the church and the propagation of gospel in the community.

In his homily, the Bishop of Ukwa Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel Kelechi Eze eulogised early missionaries for bringing Christianity to Ukwa, describing it as a courageous act. Eze urged Christians to imbibe the spirit of giving without murmuring. The Bishop also thanked the Ohambele people for allowing the early missionaries to settle in their midst, from where the gospel spread to other parts of Ukwa land and beyond.

Chairman of the occasion, Rt. Hon. Adolphus Wabara thanked the priests and authorities of Anglican Church for keeping the history of the church, adding that so many communities in Abia State are yet to enjoy the gains of Christianity which the Ohambele people are enjoying.

The chairman of the anniversary planning committee, Sir Marcus Wabara said the significance of the day lay in thanking God for using the land of Ohambele to take the gospel of salvation to other communities.

Wabara said, “We rejoice in this reminder of our privilege and historic status as the first Ndoki community to embrace Christianity. From time immemorial and ever before the establishment of the pax Britannica, our great Ohambele Kingdom has confronted and overcome untold conflicts, difficulties and hardships.

“Without fail, Almighty God has encouraged, reinforced, and strengthened our people. No wonder, then, that the Most High God occupies a special place in our kingdom, in our homes and in our hearts.”

In an interview, the former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu who was the special guest of honour said that it gladdened his heart that he was alive to see a church with such a great historical background attaining 150 years of life.

Kalu, who described Marcus Wabara as a friend, said he also came with the APC family in the state to join the Anglican Communion in Ukwa and the country at large and the Wabaras to celebrate the day.

The APC chairman, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa recalled that most schools and hospitals which were established by early missionaries helped in the intellectual grooming and physical development of Nigerians such as Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chinua Achebe, among others, who benefitted from their teachings and services.

Nwankpa called on the people of Ohambele to ensure that the legacies handed over to them by their forefathers were guarded jealously.

    Kalu, Daniel eulogise Asiwaju

Former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu and former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel yesterday described the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as a colossus whose name will remain evergreen in the annals of Nigeria.

Acknowledging the role played by the frontline politician in the social, economic and political development of the country, Kalu said: “Tinubu is a bridge-builder, a statesman and an outstanding philanthropist.”

In a birthday message to the APC chieftain, the ex-Abia State governor extolled the virtues of Tinubu, stressing that the latter is the father of modern Lagos, owing to his performance as governor from 1999 to 2007.

He said: “I join other Nigerians in celebrating Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos State Governor, as he clocks 65.

“Having followed your antecedents and accomplishments in life, especially in the political space, there is no doubt that Asiwaju Tinubu’s goodwill will continue to expand beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“The roles you played in the fight against the annulment of June 12 presidential election and the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria through National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group, are commendable and worthy of emulation.

“You have continually sustained your relationship with the masses and as such you remain a formidable force to reckon with in politics.

“In view of your ideology and exemplary leadership qualities, you are one of the very few selfless and well-meaning Nigerians.”

Daniel, in his statement, described Tinubu as an indomitable spirit of great mind, insightful opinion, strong heart and exemplary will.

He said Tinubu’s hard work, dynamism and “out-of-the-box” thinking have received wide appreciation both at home and abroad.

  • Kalu hails Ambode for transformation

    Kalu hails Ambode for transformation

Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu at the weekend praised Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for transforming the Centre of Excellence with massive infrastructural development.

Kalu said the infrastructural drive will help attract investment into Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview at the departure wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on his way to the United States, Kalu said the exemplary leadership thus far shown by Ambode in Lagos puts him in “A – list” among governors.

Kalu said: “I am very impressed with what is happening in Lagos State and the continuity Ambode has taken.

“His background as a civil servant has put him in good stead to understand the dynamics of the job.

“For me , the mark I am giving him is very high . My advice is that he should keep it up and he should not relent in his efforts in trying to defend democracy here.

if it is well with Lagos, it will be well with other parts of the country.

“So I believe that Ambode should do more, run more and hit the ground more. I am not saying this for him to go and start sleeping. I have never seen him since he became governor.”
