    Kwankwaso-Obi flight of fancy

While Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara was busy fulminating against his opponents in the midst of the supremacy battle between former vice president Atiku Abubakar and FCT minister Nyesom Wike, ex-Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi were forging ahead uproariously in their anticipated political marriage of convenience. Speaking in Hausa in a video clip hosted on X (Twitter), the former Kano governor surprised Nigerians when he indicated his willingness to be Mr Obi’s running mate in the 2027 presidential poll should certain conditions be met. That possibility was briefly explored in 2023, but it was discarded as both unfeasible and farcical. Dr Kwankwaso, who was New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the last poll, is mercurial and opinionated, while Mr Obi is superficial and bigoted. It would be hard for the two points of view to meet; but given their desperation for power, they have not stopped tantalising the electorate with the prospect of a joint ticket.

It is not known why the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) felt compelled to respond to the rumour of a Kwankwaso-Obi ticket, seeing how absolutely tenuous it is, but they poured scorn on the idea and argued its unworkability. Indeed, perusing Dr Kwankwaso’s Twitter statement, and given the many direct and indirect caveats he alluded to, the idea of the two governors running on a single ticket seems terribly far-fetched. According to the former Kano governor, “I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically, I’m his elder brother, I’m a PhD holder, I performed better than him when I was a governor of my state. I’ve no problem with deputising Peter Obi, but only if certain conditions are met. We are willing to engage in discussions, provided that trust is established.” Having stacked the deck against Mr Obi, it appears non sequitur for him to offer to play a subordinate role to someone he indirectly denigrates. He did not of course indicate what conditions must be met for him to deputise Mr Obi, but two explanations emerge from his statement: either he never meant a word he said about running on a single ticket with the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, or he knew that his unstated conditions could never be met, with the onus for failure resting squarely on the narrow shoulders of Mr Obi.

Dr Kwankwaso of course exaggerates his worth. He may have a PhD, and is thus a little better ideologically moored than the former Anambra governor, but in terms of political size, it is hard to see the former Kano governor commanding anything more than a sizeable fraction of Kano. It is incontestable that as governor he performed better than his Anambra counterpart, especially seeing how indistinguishable and platitudinous Mr Obi was and has remained, but Dr Kwankwaso did not also leave Kano a considerably changed state than he met it, at least not on the ‘unforgettable’, howbeit illusory, scale of Caesar Augustus who “…found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble”. When the two former governors differently campaigned for the presidency in 2023, neither made any serious reference to their legacies, nor spoke grandly to visionary ideas and projects. All the things they said and did were fairly humdrum and commonplace.

By speaking to a possible joint ticket with Mr Obi, Dr Kwankwaso underscores the point everyone knows already, that an Atiku candidacy would be a tough sell in 2027, not only on account of his age and the attendant lethargy it brings, but also because of political equity. Rotational presidency may be an informal and fortuitous formula for national peace and stability, but it has seemed to serve the country fairly well as well as appeared to lower tension. Whether the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders manage to heal the fractures in their party or not, it is unlikely Alhaji Atiku will be adopted as presidential candidate by any serious party. And if he is selected, it is unlikely he will command votes on the scale he managed in 2023. Dr Kwankwaso knows this, and even suspects that the country will be in no mood to break that North-South rotational formula. He is of course himself not a principled man, and he may be fishing for a coalition that will project him into higher office, but it is hard to see the joint ticket he waffled about with Mr Obi amounting to anything.

After regaining control of Kano, Dr Kwankwaso is predictably seeking other adventures, probably at a much higher political level than the governorship. Like Alhaji Atiku, everything about the former Kano governor is ambition and higher office, or at any rate, public office. He and his cohorts hijacked the NNPP, but they have neither turned it into an exemplar nor fine-tuned its platform or ideology to make it irresistible to the electorate. It will remain a special purpose vehicle for winning elections and maintaining relevance. Worse, he has not worked on himself. He is as truculent as he was years ago, and his ideology more amorphous than it is practical. His ad hocism and vengefulness bloomed during and after the Kano governorship campaign. And even though he is book intelligent, there is little else about him. He prides himself on his charisma, but that appeal finds fulfillment only in Kano State for reasons that should worry him. Yet he seems unaware of his many limitations, not to talk of his many illusions. Like many other politicians, he snickers at the fickleness of the electorate, believing that if the circumstances are right they could be led by the nose to vote for a ticket as implausible as the one he flirts with.

Beyond the religion and ethnic factors, the distinctly unideological Mr Obi has no other issue to campaign with. Yes, he is a perfect fault-finder and an incurable idealist, but in 2027, he will have no grounds upon which to campaign. Like Alhaji Atiku in the PDP, his identification with LP is based on exploitation, not symbiosis. He neither shares affinity with the party nor does he have sympathy for it, whether it dies or lives, whether it grows or is stunted. It is significant that Mr Obi is not any less opportunistic than either Alhaji Atiku or Dr Kwankwaso, but this inconvenient fact will not discourage him from the grand posturing and grandiloquence that hallmarked his campaigns and public life. The former Kano governor gibed at him about his unremarkable time as Anambra governor, but he doesn’t care. After all, like his university certificate, he did not use his governorship legacy to campaign in 2023, preferring to stick to the inflammable issues of ethnicity and religion. In 2027, he will still not use his eight years in Anambra to campaign given the chance to be on any presidential ticket, notwithstanding whether the LP survives its ongoing war of attrition. And having not developed the interest in improving himself beyond the frenzied and unnatural manner he is seeking friends and contacts all over the country, and lacking in intellectual and analytical depth on all counts, he will be hard put to find and sustain issues on which to anchor his campaign.

The LP foot soldiers have welcomed Dr Kwankwaso’s offer, with supporters of both politicians jousting over who between the two leaders possesses the higher market value. They are all tilting at windmills. Not only is an assessment of the two men too early, it is also unclear whether two years down the line, both of them would still possess any market value at all. They are not the best their states can produce or offer, and it is not even certain that regardless of their flaws they will have anything to recommend them.

Main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed anger at former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for describing the party as dead.

On Saturday, during the inauguration of the renovated party office of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Katsina State, Kwankwaso had said he and his followers left the PDP because “it is dead”.

He added: “I wish to remind you that PDP is dead because we left the party. Since they have gone out of the line, we decided to check out.”

In a WhatsApp message yesterday in Abuja in response to reporters’ questions, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba said: “Our reaction to the statement credited to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso is that he is very inconsequential in the Nigerian national politics today, judging from the fact that he is struggling to lead a party called NNPP which is also struggling to control only one state.

“It is unfathomable to imagine that a failed and inconsequential politician with only one state would claim that a party that has 13 governors, many senators, many members of the House of Representatives, control of several states’ House of Assembly and a strong presence in all the local government areas and wards across the country is dead.

“More disturbing is that Senator Kwankwaso has exhibited extreme selfishness and self-centeredness, which shows that he is not a leader.

“It is unfortunate that he is up to this at this time when the PDP and patriotic Nigerians are speaking out against the excruciating hardship in the country…

“At this time, Nigerians, including in Senator Kwankwaso’s home state, Kano, are dying of hunger and starvation.

“At a time when over 150 million Nigerians have sunk deeper into poverty; when millions of Nigerians are daily losing their means of livelihood; at a time when the naira has fallen to over N1,600 to a dollar with over 34 per cent inflation rate; in the wake of brutal increase in the price of petrol to over N1,200 in various parts of the country, the only thing that occupies Senator Kwankwaso’s mind is his self-centered pipe dream of becoming President.

“It is very unfortunate. So, the PDP does not intend to join issues with him on such display of self-centeredness and insensitivity.”

“In any event, whatever political relevance Senator Kwankwaso believes he has achieved, he did so only when he was in the PDP.”

    Stop politicising insecurity, Kwankwaso cautions

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Dr. Iliyasu Musa Kwankwaso, has cautioned Nigerians to stop politicising security issues.

Kwankwaso noted that the politicisation of security matters was hindering smooth progress in the fight against insecurity by the federal government.

He gave the advice while addressing newsmen in Kano, commending the efforts of the ministry of Defense in supporting the military relocation to Sokoto.

He expressed sadness over how some “political jobbers” engaged in causing rift between the former Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle and the member representing Birnin Magaji/Kauran Namoda Federal Constituency, Aminu Sani Jaji.

The APC chieftain also praised the efforts of Matawalle announcing a reward of N20 million to whosoever gives fruitful information that will lead to the arrest of the bandits.

He said: “Initially, people were condemning the defense ministry for inaction, and now that steps have been taken for the fight against the terrorists, the same people are condemning the ministry. This is very hypocritical.

“Those engaging in this act are beneficiaries of the terrorism that is killing our people out there, that is why they have turned the matter into politics.”

Kwankwaso queried: “People are being killed by these terrorists, and the situation had gone bad, now that the ministry has taken steps towards dealing with the situation, to the extent that about 80 terrorists were killed yesterday, why would any right thinking person come out to condemn the action?

“I want to call on our people to please join hands together and support the efforts of the government in this fight against terrorism put in place by President Bola Tinubu.

“We should support the efforts of the defense ministry as well as the military to achieve the needful,” he appealed.

He further averred that those criticising the federal government’s giant steps in the area of security were only interested in blackmailing the president, with political interest in 2027, which he noted, is not in the interest of the nation.

He also called on northerners to desist from the act of attacking themselves needlessly, as, according to him, that was hindering development in the region.

Wait till 2027, Kwankwaso tells protest organisers

National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has warned organisers of the nationwide protest scheduled to commence August 1 should consider the consequences of such action.

In a letter published on his X handle, the former Kano Governor appeal to organisers of the protest to channel their energy to more effective means of transformation while waiting to use their votes to end perceived bad governance in 2027.

He also appealed to the leadership of the country at all levels to take necessary steps to address the myriad challenges facing the country.

In the message he signed titled “address to Nigerians” Kwankwaso said: “My fellow Nigerians, It is with deep sense of responsibility that I share my thoughts on the current situation in Nigeria. We found ourselves in avoidable hardship because our leaders missed some steps since 2007.

“However, there is always room for correction and setting the country on the right track for economic development, prosperity and better welfare of citizens. This could be achieved through ensuring good governance, respect for the rule of law, transparency and accountability.

“It is sad to note that the attitude of our leaders to poor governance plunged the citizens, especially youth, into anger, hunger, insecurity, hopelessness and about giving up on the country.

“Interferences by the Federal Government into the affairs of the chieftaincy matters in Kano State, impeachment of the Deputy Governor of Edo State, political crises in Rivers State, sabotage to Aliko Dangote refinery, controversies surrounding Samoa agreement, the conflict between Sen. Ali Ndume and the APC Leadership, widespread insecurity and other criminal acts are a few examples of avoidable and unnecessary crises.

“We appeal to the leadership of the country at all levels to take necessary steps to address the myriad challenges facing the country.

“Today, I speak to you not just as an elder and a concerned citizen, but as someone who deeply believes in the power and potential of our great nation. The recent calls for protests against bad governance resonate with me, as they reflect our collective frustration and yearning for a better Nigeria.

“However, I urge Nigerians to put our country first before any other consideration by way of being patient with the government and giving it all necessary support to succeed. If any government fails to provide the necessary leadership for a better Nigeria, we will have opportunity as citizens to elect the people who can bring the required change using our votes.

“However, I urge you to consider the consequences of national protests and to channel your energy into a more effective and peaceful means of transformation—through the power of your ballot.

“Protests, while a fundamental democratic right, often come with unforeseen and dire consequences. The tragic events of the past have shown us that protests can escalate into violence, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property, and widespread chaos.

The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has urged Nigerians to seek change through democratic means rather than protests.

This is contained in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Saturday in kano.

Kwankwaso emphasized that effective and lasting change can only  be achieved through the power of the ballot.

He said, “It is with a deep sense of responsibility that I share my thoughts on the current situation in Nigeria.

“We find ourselves in avoidable hardship because our leaders missed some steps since 2007.

“However, there is always room for correction and setting the country on the right track for economic development, prosperity, and better welfare of citizens.”

He called on Nigerian leaders at all levels to  address the challenges facing Nigerians by ensuring good governance and adherence to the rule of law.

Acknowledging the recent calls for protests, Kwankwaso recognised the collective frustration and yearning for a better Nigeria but cautioned against the potential consequences of such actions.

He urged Nigerians to consider the power of their votes as the most effective tool for change.

Kwankwaso advised: “In these trying times, our nation stands at a crossroads. Our collective frustration with bad governance has reached a boiling point, and the urge to protest is strong.

”As an elder and patriotic Nigerian, I share your concerns and your desire for change.

“However, I urge you to consider the consequences of national protests and to channel your energy into a more effective and peaceful means of transformation through the power of your ballot.”

Why Sanusi was reinstated asEmir of Kano, by Kwankwaso

National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said that the return of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano and the several demolitions carried out by the state governor, Engr. Kabir Abba Yusuf, were fulfilment of campaign promises by the party.

Kwankwaso, however, alleged that some persons in Abuja pressured the former Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero into coming to Kano even after he, alongside others, had accepted the dissolution of the five emirates created by the Ganduje government.

Speaking on Prime Time, a political programme on Arise News monitored in Abuja, Kwankwaso, who was presidential candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 general elections, said they have no regrets for fulfilling the promises made during their campaign for which the governor was elected.

He said: “It was a campaign issue. Don’t forget that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was installed in 2014 by our government. My Deputy who became governor decided in his wisdom to divide Kano into five emirates. What many people don’t remember is that it was tried by the Rimi government during the Second Republic.

“It was our position, our belief that Kano should continue as one solid traditional institution. That was what we believed in. So, during our campaign, the governor went round to tell the people that if they voted for him, Kano would return to being one solid traditional institution, of course with support from the other emirates.

“That is why when he was sworn-in, he started a process of consultation. For your information, the emirates that were created by Rimi were dissolved by Sabo Bakinzuwo who took over from him right there at the Race Course where he was sworn in.

“But for one year, the governor carried out due consultations and decided to follow due process through the State House of Assembly and Sanusi was reinstated. People voted for him for several reasons, including making Kano one strong emirate.

“So, we are not just coming from the streets. We have a history.  We did not just wake up one day to do that. That is the position of the people of Kano State and we have done what is right and the other four emirs have accepted it and moved out of their palaces.”

APC to Kwankwaso: your allegations insensitive, unhelpful

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has berated presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso for alleging that the Federal Government is trying to create a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents in the North.

The party described Kwankwaso’s allegations as ‘insensitive, unhelpful, incendiary and unconscionable’ for an individual of his standing.

A statement by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka said the outburst is ‘grossly insensitive, unwarranted, and unacceptable’.

This is also as the local chapter called for Kwankwaso’s arrest for ‘maliciously’ accusing the Federal Government of breeding new crops of Boko Haram terrorists in Kano.

State Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, said: “Let him bring evidence to prove his allegations. That is how he also lied that the APC-led federal government is plotting to declare a state of emergency in Kano.”

The statement by Morka reads: “Our attention has been drawn to comments reportedly made by Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, accusing the APC-led Federal Government of attempting to create a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents in Northern Nigeria.

“Without any shred of evidence, he further alleged that certain individuals in the APC are goading the government with the goal of reclaiming Kano State through the declaration of a state of emergency. Kwankwaso’s wild and unhinged comments were made with reference to the lingering Emirate tussle in Kano.

“We consider Kwankwaso’s comments to be disappointing, highly incendiary and unconscionable for an individual of his standing. As a former governor and Minister of Defence, we expect Kwankwaso to demonstrate high grade discretion, and a better grip of the severe social, political and security implications of unguarded utterances capable of fueling tension and strife in Kano.

“It is disturbing that Kwankwaso would so casually accuse the Federal Government of attempting to create a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents, the same Boko Haram that has inflicted unspeakable terror, destroyed innocent lives and our heroic men and women in uniform.

“It is grossly insensitive, unwarranted, and unacceptable for Kwankwaso to bandy such a serious allegation in such a cavalier manner. In his unhinged bid to lash out, Senator Kwankwaso ignored government’s glaring neutrality on the emirate crisis in Kano from the very outset. As a government that thrives on respect for the rule of law and constitutional liberties, the Federal Government has confidence in our courts to fairly adjudicate the matter, and has no need or reason to side with any of parties in the Emir-ship dispute.

“Unguarded accusations like these coming from the highest level of leadership of the NNPP such as that made by the Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, against the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, which he has since retracted and apologised for, are utterly unhelpful in the delicate context of Kano, and must be avoided.

“President Bola Tinubu is a pan-Nigeria bridge builder for peace, security and unity in our land, and will not, cannot, must not be directly or remotely tainted with flimsy and unjustifiable allegation of promoting violent crisis in any part of our country where he is the President and Commander-in Chief-of the Armed Forces.

Enemies working to topple Kano, says Kwankwaso

New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) national leader Rabiu Kwankwaso yesterday alleged that enemies of Kano were plotting to topple the state.

Kwankwaso, a one-time Kano governor, called on the people of the state to join forces for the peace and development of the commercial city.

Kwankwaso made the call at a special Sallah celebration gala organised by the Kwankwasiya Development Foundation in Kano, held in his residence yesterday.

He said the time for all Kano indigenes and NNPP members to come together has come based on the issues being faced by state from highly-placed politicians from different fronts.

The Presidency had denied Kwankwaso’s allegation that the Federal Government was planning to slam a state of emergency on Kano over the lingering emirate tussle.

Still on emirates crisis, Kwankwaso said the enemies have now turned the issue to a political show of force against restoring the institution of its historic tradition.

He said: “We won elections overwhelmingly but the enemies of the state are working hard to topple it, but Allah in his infinite wisdom intervened.

Kano APC calls for Kwankwaso’s arrest

The Kano chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday urged security agencies to immediately arrest the national leader and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabi’u Kwankwaso, for “maliciously” accusing the Federal Government of breeding new crops of Boko Haram terrorists in Kano.

Kano APC chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, who called for Kwankwaso’s arrest, told The Nation that the party was in consultation with its legal team to institute a legal action against the former Kano Governor.

“Let him bring evidence to prove his allegations,” Abbas requested, adding: “that is how he (Kwankwaso) also lied that the APC-led federal government is plotting to declare a state of emergency on Kano.”

Kwankwaso had claimed that the Federal Government government was attempting to create a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents in Kano and Northern Nigeria, faulting the deployment of security personnel around the Nasarawa palace where Aminu Bayero is staying.

Kwankwaso voiced these concerns at a flag-off ceremony for the construction of an 85-km rural road in his hometown of Madobi, which is being undertaken at a cost of N21 billion.

In his reaction on Tuesday, Abbas said no amount of threats or propaganda by Kwankwaso or the NNPP in the state can intimidate the Federal Government.

“The embattled NNPP chieftain, who is visibly disturbed by the dismal performance of his protégé in the last year and is frustratingly longing for control of Kano politics, should be arrested by security agents to disclose who he claims is recruiting Boko Haram terrorists.”

“We call on security agents, in the strongest terms, to arrest this man so that he can reveal the identity of those he referred to as ‘enemies of the state’ working with the federal government to recruit Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents,” he said.

The chairman noted that Kwankwaso’s comments suggested a sinister motive to cause trouble in Kano.

He said: “Kwankwaso has long been a security threat to Kano and the nation, given his antecedents. He leads a cult-like movement (Kwankwasiyya) and has been widely accused of recruiting youths, mostly school dropouts, to unleash terror on the people in the state.”

Abbas averred that before and during the 2023 general election, thousands of such youths were recruited and empowered to intimidate the public through physical attack, destruction of opponents’ properties and snatching of mobile phones.

The APC chairman further observed during the prolonged legal battle over the governorship election, Kwankwaso and his associates threatened to kill the judges of the Election Petition Tribunal if the outcome was unfavourable to them.

Abbas added that since the purported reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as emir of Kano, hundreds of weapon-brandishing thugs have been recruited and stationed at the Emir’s Palace where illicit substances are openly sold and abused, posing a threat to residents in and around the palace.

The Presidency yesterday denied allegations by the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) National Leader Rabiu Kwankwaso that the Federal Government was planning to declare a state of emergency in Kano State.

It described the alleged plot to suspend democratically elected structures in the Northwest state as a “mere rumour.’’

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga told The Nation last night that there was no circumstance to warrant an emergency declaration on the state.

Kwankwaso, who was the party’s presidential candidate in last year’s general election, had on Sunday alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government was taking sides in the Kano Emir tussle.

However, the Presidency said: “There is no truth in it. It is a mere rumour. The Federal Government cannot declare any state of emergency in any state without the involvement of the National Assembly. There is no such plan. It is a mere rumour.

“The National Assembly is in recess. No President can just wake up and declare a state of emergency in any state.”

Also, the Commissioner of Police in Kano, Ussain Gumel, denied allegations that his men were biased in the emirate crisis.

In a telephone conversation with The Nation, the police chief said the force’s mandate is to protect lives and property.

He said it was their duty to protect both emirs, “which is what we are still doing.”

Gumel said men and officers of the police and other security agencies have been neutral.

He added that the police received about five court orders on the emirate tussle.

The CP said: “The issue is before the federal and state courts. We are waiting for judgment.

“We received about five court orders and forwarded them to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. We are waiting for his response and directives.

“And while awaiting the outcome in court or directives from the AGF, we must protect the contending emirs.

“We also have to protect the subjects of both emirs as well as residents of the state.

“My appeal to the public is for them to exercise patience and calm while we await the outcome from the relevant authorities.”

Kwankwaso spoke during the inauguration of 82-kilometre rural road networks in his hometown, Madobi Local Government.

He also accused security agencies of backing deposed Emir Aminu Ado-Bayero.

He said the Federal Government was listening to the wrong people in making decisions on the emirate issue.

The former governor of the state warned that the people would resist any attempt to undermine the constituted authority.

He said: “We have mass followers because people believe in us; we are pro-people and the NNPP administration is determined to serve them anywhere they voted for it.

“We will not fold our arms and watch enemies of the state destroy the peaceful co-existence of our dear state, as we shall do everything possible to support the governor (Abba Yusuf)  to succeed. I am happy that he is not distracted and is focused on achieving his goals.

“Some people from Kano, who are enemies of the state, are the ones advising the Federal Government on how to take over Kano through a state of emergency.

“This is madness of the highest order that the good, peace-loving, and committed people of Kano will resist.”

Kwankwaso also stated that “ahead of 2027, some desperate politicians are already on a mission of disruption.’’

He warned: “We will rather prefer the two of us to lose than to allow them to crush us unnecessarily.

“We dare anybody, who thinks he can victimise us politically, to go and be rest assured that we are ready for the fight.

“We are not afraid to be out of power because we will remain politicians in or out of government.

“We cannot run away from our destiny; we are humans; we know what is good for us and we will pursue it vigorously.”

The  NNPP national leader added that the “unpatriotic politicians” from Kano advising the Federal Government wrongly would only contribute to its failure.

He, however, said the state government and the people of Kano were ready to dialogue on the tussle over the Emir stool.

“We are open to dialogue, truce, and reconciliation, but we will not accept intimidation and political harassment of any sort. We know how to play politics and we have all it takes to protect ourselves from any evil,” Kwankwaso said.

Kano has been on the edge since May 23 when Ado-Bayero was deposed and Sanusi reinstated as the Emir.

While Sanusi, a one-time governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), moved into the main Palace in the Gidan Rumfa area of Kano City, Ado-Bayero, who was out of the state when he was sacked, returned and moved into the Nasarawa palace.

Both are currently seeking legal interpretation on who is the authentic monarch of the ancient city.

The command decried the booing of the reinstated monarch by miscreants on his way back to the palace after leading the Eid prayer at the Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Jumu’at Mosque in Kofar-Mata on Sunday.

Abdullahi Kiyawa, the spokesman for the command, said in a statement that Emir Sanusi II was returning to the palace through another route as part of a religious obligation when the incident happened.

He said it was unfortunate that the miscreants allowed themselves to be used by persons bent on causing trouble in the state.

Kiyawa’s statement reads in part: “The incident (booing) occurred while Emir Sanusi and his followers left the Eid ground after the prayers were conducted peacefully.

“Emir Sanusi passed through Shahuci, Kofar Wambai, and Zage where some miscreants out of the large crowd booed him, but local hunters who were part of those escorting the Emir dispersed them.

“The command has provided adequate security in place to tackle any form of security threats during and after the celebration.”
