Kwankwaso’s son makes list of Kano commissioner-nominees

Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, the son of the former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has been nominated as commissioner-nominee in Kano.

The Kano state governor, Abba Yusuf, included him in the list of names sent to the state Assembly for confirmation as commissioners.

It was not clear whether the governor planned to do a mild cabinet reshuffle or just add up the four nominees to his 13-member cabinet.

Recently, Governor Yusuf directed the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to issue evaluation forms to all his commissioners.

During their swearing-in ceremony, he had declared that they were on “probation,” emphasizing that their performance would determine whether they would remain in their positions.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor who founded the NNPP, reportedly did everything to ensure Yusuf got the ticket and won the governorship election.

It was gathered that for his son to be appointed commissioner is an expression of gratitude by Governor Yusuf to his godfather and benefactor.

Other nominees on the list submitted to the Kano State Assembly included Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, Usman Shehu Aliyu, and Abduljabbar Garko.

The speaker, Jibril Falgore, admitted receipt of the nominees’ list during plenary on Tuesday, March 26.

He said the screening of the commissioner-nominees will take place next week.

    Adamant Kwankwaso versus Kano Emirate

In an interview two Thursdays ago, former governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, disclosed that the splitting of the Kano Emirate into five emirates in 2019 as well as the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2020 would be revisited. In May 2019, former governor Abdullahi Ganduje had assented to the Kano House of Assembly bill splitting the emirate. With the assent, the emirate was split into five: Kano, the surviving rump, and Rano, Bichi, Karaye, and Gaya. Barely a year later, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was deposed, for, among other things, disrespecting the office of the governor, and land racketeering. Dr Kwankwaso insisted that the former emir was deposed because of Dr Ganduje’s inferiority complex. The former governor, however, countered by flaunting his own PhD and his wife’s professorship, mocking his traducers for not having professorial wives.

The Kano quagmire has become a huge entanglement, punctuated by bitter quarrels, deployment of trenchant language, and now almost irreconcilable differences triggered by a spectacular falling out due to unmet expectations of loyalty. Dr Ganduje was twice deputy governor to Dr Kwankwaso (1999-2003; 2011-2015), though punctuated by a two-term interregnum filled by ex-governor Ibrahim Shekarau. They have rich CVs in Kano: highly educated, urbane, articulate, but cantankerous and unforgiving. Days after the Supreme Court gave judgement in the last governorship election dispute, Dr Ganduje invited Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, a civil engineer who also brandishes a master’s degree in Business Administration, and Dr Kwankwaso to abandon their party, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), but added that he would automatically become their Jagora (leader). The invitation has incensed the duo, Dr Ganduje’s sense of humour being lost on them. Though Kano’s leading politicians have so much in common, particularly the more than a decade of camaraderie between Dr Kwankwaso and Dr Ganduje, they are likely to remain irreconcilable and will continue to bait one another.

It is mainly in this context that the promised review of the Kano Emirate split should be understood. Dr Kwankwaso will remain adamant until it proves politically costly. It is obvious why he is at the forefront of campaigning for the review of the emirate balkanisation, but it is not altogether clear that it makes political sense to champion the cause instead of the governor. Gov Yusuf hails from Gaya, one of the beneficiary emirates consequent upon the Kano Emirate split. Whole new infrastructures and economies have followed the split; reversing history now will be more contentious than before the split. But this has not deterred DR Kwankwaso. According to him: “Honestly it (the Kano emirates issue) is one of the things that nobody has sat with me to discuss so far, but I am sure we are going to sit and see how to go about it. Is it going to be allowed, demolished, corrected, or whatever? It will be revisited, and what’s supposed to be done will be done. There were a lot of things and this was a trap. All these things were not done in good faith or intention. It was brought with some bad intentions which every one of you here and our listeners are aware of. Sometimes you come with things that are good and they turn out to be bad while sometimes you bring bad things and they turn out to be good…”

For now, two things seem uppermost in the mind of the NNPP leader. One, he wants the Kano Emirate reunified. The previously monolithic emirate has a nostalgic hold on him and perhaps on many other Kanawa. It was a symbol of bigness, power and influence. But has the rump Kano Emirate become less influential in the cultural and political scheme of things in the state, and indeed in Nigeria where everyone is still besotted to Kano as a thriving and powerful emirate and entity? It is doubtful, for water is finding its level and course, especially after five years. To begin rebuilding the emirate through reunification will probably throw up fresh uncertainties. Will it not be better to let sleeping dogs lie, regardless of the politics that underscored the balkanisation? As the Hausa idiomatically put it, “A bar kaza a cikin gashin ta’. It is, sadly, very tempting not to let bad enough alone. The itch to tamper with things based on sometimes indefensible or untenable sentiments is always high. That the split was also ‘bad intentioned’, as Dr Kwankwaso said, and coming from, of all people, the hated Dr Ganduje, seems especially galling to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and protector of the emirate council.

Two, somehow, either because of the goodness of his heart or for reasons not even he can properly decode, Dr Kwankwaso wants the ‘historic wrong’ done to Emir Sanusi II redressed. The deposed emir was not even Dr Kwankwaso’s first choice when he was appointed in 2014, a year before the former governor’s second term ended. Obviously he has grown to like him immensely. But since the NNPP controls the legislature, the lawmakers can of course be made to do the NNPP bidding. However, the emir wasn’t just deposed for thumbing his nose at Gov Ganduje, he was also probed for unregulated and liberal spending habits and then queried for land racketeering. The NNPP will have to get all those inconvenient details expunged to legitimately return him to office. Reinstating Emir Sanusi II may not be the chief goal of Dr Kwankwaso, but he will do anything to rub Dr Ganduje’s nose in it.

Targeting and trashing his former deputy and now chairman of the APC may, however, be far easier than managing his new mentee and governor, Mr Yusuf. On both the emirate matter and possible reinstatement of Sanusi II, the more candid and less bashful Dr Kwankwaso has thrust himself forward and spoken more authoritatively than the governor. He forgets that a new sheriff is in town, and his obtrusions will be resisted more and more as state affairs get more volatile. It is inevitable. All it takes is a little more consolidation by the governor, and the new helmsman will begin to assert himself, differ from his mentor in policy perspectives, and eventually strike out from under the shadows of his leader in whose government he was once a Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport between 2011 and 2015. Sooner or later, Mr Yusuf’s mollifying and conciliating rule will contend with Dr Kwankwaso’s fierce and adamant disposition until something gives. No state has yet balked this trend. It won’t begin with Kano.

Kano Emirates issue will be revisited, Kwankwaso vows

    • APC: Let the emirates be

The deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, may be on his way back to the throne, according to hints dropped late Thursday by a former governor of Kano State, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Kwankwaso, who is the godfather of  Governor Abba Yusuf, said that the creation of four new emirates from Kano by the immediate past administration of Dr.Abdullahi Ganduje would also be revisited.

Anxiety was high in the city yesterday as news of the development spread.

“The governor will review the dethronement and balkanisation of the emirate,” Kwankwaso, who is Yusuf’s father-in-law and presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP)  told select radio stations in Kano.

He added: “The issue of Kano Emirates will definitely be revisited.

“Honestly, it is one of the things that nobody has sat with me to discuss so far, but I am sure we are going to sit and see how to go about it.

“Is it going to be allowed, demolished, corrected, or whatever? It will be revisited, and what is supposed to be done will be done.

“There were a lot of things and this was a trap. All these things were not done in good faith or intention. It was brought with some bad intentions which every one of you here and our listeners are aware of.

“Sometimes you come with things that are good and they turn out to be bad while sometimes you bring bad things and they turn out to be good.

“So, all I know is that I was not consulted as of now but definitely we will come to discuss and see what should be done.”

In the run up to the contentious governorship election last March, Kwankwaso and Yusuf had made it clear that the Kano Emirate issue would be revisited if the NNPP won.

Kwankwaso who also spoke on last week’s restoration of Yusuf’s mandate as governor by the Supreme Court, said his political opponents had plotted to incite violence in the state if the NNPP had lost and blamed the crisis on him.

The aim, according to him, was to get him arrested.

He alleged that his opponents have also been denying him access to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Kwankwaso denied that he had a deal in place to defect to the APC, although he said his doors were open.

He said, “Politics is not dirty as many are saying. Politics is a clean game. With my experience, I can assure you, someone cannot outsmart me in this game.

“The ministerial appointment they are talking about, I spoke to the President (Tinubu) that my willingness to accept the position is to assist him.”

Reacting to the Kwankwaso threat of revisiting the balkanization of the Kano Emirate, yesterday, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhajj Alhassan Yaryasa, advised Governor Yusuf against the dissolution of the four Emirates.

Yaryasa said those asking the governor to dissolve the Emirates, sack the present Kano Emir Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, and reinstate the dethroned Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II were only out to cause trouble in the state and create disaffection between the government and people of the Emirates.

His words: “I want to advise Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to disregard such calls on him to dissolve the four Emirates by some people who do not wish the state well.

“The Governor is now father to all people in the state irrespective of political inclination. Those calling for the removal or scrapping of the Emirates are enemies of the state and are doing so for their personal and selfish interests.”

Yaryasa said any attempt to scrap the Emirates would not augur well for the state as it would be greeted with stiff resistance, especially from the people of the Emirates.

“The governor is popular but if he attempts to dissolve the new Emirates, it will seriously affect his popularity.

“I want to draw his attention to the fact that traditional rulers are not political office appointees that you can remove at any time at will without committing a serious offence,” Yaryasa said.

He pleaded with elders in the state to caution the Governor against plans to tamper with the new emirates, adding that “any attempt to dissolve the new Emirates will be resisted.”

A former governor of Kano state and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said that the issue of Kano emirates will definitely be revisited.

Kwankwaso who spoke during an interview granted to select radio stations in Kano, reinstated that the issue of Kano emirates will definitely be revisited.

The immediately past Governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje had split the Kano emirate into five and dethroned the former Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi.

Following the victory of the New Nigerian Peoples Party in last year’s election, Kwankwaso had said the government of Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf would review the dethronement and balkanisation of the emirate.

Kwankwaso goes spiritual, holds special prayer in Kano ahead of Supreme Court judgment

The leader of the Kwankwasiyya political camp and the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Monday, December 25, held a special prayer session at his Kano residence.

The Nation had reported that the Supreme Court led by a five-member panel of justices presided by Justice Inyang Okoro on Thursday, December 21, reserved judgment after listening to lawyers in the matter.

The prayer which was organised by an Islamic group, Mu’assatul Kwankwasiyya, was aimed at seeking God’s intervention ahead of the anticipated Kano governorship dispute verdict by the Supreme Court.

The prayer was led by Mallam Yahaya Sufi, Mallam Ashiru Nata’ala, Mallam Bazallahi Nasiru Kabara, and Mallam Sadiq Isiyaku Rabiu.

While observing the prayers, the clerics prayed for the success of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Supreme Court and the sustenance of peace and tranquillity in the state.

The prayer session was also attended by some cabinet members of the incumbent administration, other political appointees, and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The majority of members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano state had equally observed special fasting and called for intense prayers shortly after the Supreme Court hearing.

Kano crisis: Invite Kwankwaso for interrogation, group tells DSS

National Coalition Against Terrorism (NCAT) has called on the Director General of the Department of State Security (DSS) to invite the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso for interrogation over an alleged plan to cause crisis ahead of the Supreme Court judgment in Kano State Governorship election case.

The group also asked DSS to quiz Kwankwaso on the continued attacks on judicial officers and judiciary by members of his party since the Kano State Governorship Election Tribunal sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of NNPP and declared Nasir Gawuna of All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of March 18 governorship election in the state.

The group at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, December 5, said it has uncovered a plot by the Kwankwasiyya Movement led by the former minister of defence to cause chaos in Kano under the guise of protesting the verdict of the Appeal Court that reaffirmed the sack of Governor Yusfu by the Election Tribunal.

The national coordinator of the group, Terrence Kuanum, accused the former Kano state governor of acts unbecoming of an elder statesman who should have had a better experience of the Nigerian judicial system and the prevailing circumstances that compelled political actors to obey the electoral laws.

Kuanum noted that since the eve of the tribunal judgement of the Kano State governorship election petition which sacked Yusuf as Governor of the state, the judicial workers especially judges have been the target of the Kwankwaso foot soldiers for elimination.

The group further complained that the attacks were not abated after the tribunal’s judgment, alleging that “the Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso led Kwankwasiyya movement” launched an anti-judiciary campaign where they discredited the judiciary and called the judges unprintable names, all in a bid to intimidate the Hon. Justices of the Appeal Court and subvert justice.

The group however commended the courage of the judiciary by ensuring that judgement was delivered on its merit despite obvious threat to life.

Kuanum warned: “Kwankwaso is aware that if you disagree with a judgment of a court, the best way is to appeal to a higher court.

“The NNPP has appealed the judgment to the Supreme Court, yet the attacks on the judiciary, the image and persons of the Hon Justices of both the Tribunal and the Appeal Court is a daily routine of the Kwankwaso-sponsored extremists.

“Without reservation, we call on the Director General of State Security Service to immediately invite Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for interrogation before Kwanksetsiyya sets the country on fire. His position as a former Governor, former minister of Defence, and Senator can cause violence and he is bent on doing so.

“The call for Kwankwaso’s interrogation as the leader of Kwankwasiyya Movement is a task that must happen now because we cannot afford to entertain any act of terrorism at the moment.”

Kano Mass Wedding: Don’t check your husband’s phones, Kwankwaso advises couples

Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the NNPP National Leader, has advised the 1,800 couples under the mass wedding scheme against checking their spouses’ phones.

This is to avoid things that could lead to marriage break-up, he counselled.

Kwankwaso spoke at the reception organised for the couples by the State Government at the Open Theatre in Kano Government House on Saturday.

He said checking spouses’ phones by married couples is one of the major causes of marriage breakups, hence the need for couples to shun anything that could lead to a crisis.

“You have been advised by all and sundry. I believe you have been advised a thousand times. Ulamas, parents, relatives and even business people have advised you on how to live peacefully with one another.

“But, I have one single advice for you; that is checking your spouses’ phones. Don’t peep your spouses’ phones, as that is the major cause of marriage breakup these days,” he said.

Kwankwaso lauded the political commitment demonstrated by Gov. Abba Yusuf for making the exercise a reality.

He also commended the administration for committing over N700 million to sponsor over 600 students to various universities outside the country.

“We have made the right choice by electing Governor Abba Yusuf as our governor. He is a good leader who has continued with our legacies. One of such legacies is this mass wedding.

“Apart from this, he is delivering mass oriented projects. We call on the good people of Kano State to support his administration,” he said.

Earlier, Yusuf said beneficiaries of the mass wedding were selected from across the 44 local government areas and the 484 wards of the state.

According to him, not less than 30 couples were selected from each of the 44 local government areas of the state.

He explained that the state government took full responsibility of the wedding, including payment of dowry, provision of furniture, wedding food stuff and N20,000 grant for the brides to start up small scale businesses at the comfort of their matrimonial homes.

Welcoming guests earlier, the Commander General, Kano Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, said no fewer than 1,500 couples tied the knot on Friday.

Daurawa, however, disclosed that out of the 1,800 couples, the wedding of 264 had been suspended, as they tested positive to some ailments and were undergoing medical treatment.

He said after medication, a new date would be announced for the wedding of the remaining 264 couples.

It was fanfare in Kano yesterday as the leader of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, joined 1,800 couples.

Of the decentralized 1,800 weddings 330 took place within the Kano metropolis with five ceremonially witnessed at the Kano Central Mosque.

The remaining weddings took place in different local government areas in a deliberate move to control crowd and ensure ease of movement.

At the grand wedding ceremony held at the mosque at the Kano Emir’s palace, Kwankwaso acted as the representative of the 1,800 grooms while Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf represented the brides.

With the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zahraddeen, as the officiating master, a N50,000 dowry was presented on behalf of each groom to the bride.

The 1,800 couples comprising widows, divorcees and spinsters were selected from across the 44 local government areas of the state.

In his speech at the occasion, Governor Yusuf described the event as a testament to the state’s dedication to promoting culture, tradition and social cohesion among the people.

“The event reflects the deep-rooted values and unity of the people in Kano State and highlights the state government’s dedication to preserving traditions while ensuring a bright future for its residents,” he said.

UNILORIN don invents surgical procedure for treatment of VVF

Prof. Munirdeen Ijaiya of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), says he has invented a surgical procedure for the treatment of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF).

He made this known in his paper presentation at the 243rd Inaugural Lecture entitled: “The Leaking Pipes as Avoidable Tragedy of Womanhood; The Odyssey of a Fistula Surgeon” in Ilorin yesterday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that VVF is a childbirth complication causing abnormal fistulous tract extending between the bladder and the vagina that allows the continuous involuntary discharge of urine into the vaginal vault.

The condition represents a significant morbidity in female urology, with continual wetness, odour, and discomfort, causing serious social problems.

The UNILORIN don, who teaches in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences of the institution, therefore, said the treatment procedure invention is named “M. Ijaiya’s Technique.”

According to him, the technique treats a rare and difficult juxtacervical VVF involving anterior lip of the cervix where the posterior lip of the cervix is used for fistula closure.

He added that “overtime, I have perfected the skill of fistula repair, as evidenced by a marked reduction in surgery time and a near 100 per cent success rate in recent years, irrespective of the complexity of the fistula.

“Obstetrics Fistula (OF) or VVF is an abnormal connection between the vagina and urinary bladder or between the vagina and rectum.

“This may develop after prolonged obstructed labour and complications, which leads to continuous urinary or faecal leakage.

“OF is as old as womanhood; it dates back from antiquity, while the cause is related to procreation.”

Ijaiya revealed that reports indicated that an estimated 150,000 Nigerian women live with VVF, and 12,000 new cases occur annually.

He added that available data also reveals that the disease is prevalent in the Northern part of the country, as well as Akwa Ibom and Ebonyi states in the Southern part.

“The social class of the woman, poverty, illiteracy, ignorance, the availability and the strong cultural opposition to cesarean deliveries are some of the determinants,” he said.

The expert lamented that most patients suffer from unnecessary and avoidable psychological complications such as loss of self-esteem, divorce, or separation and depression.

“The patient’s husband and sometimes their families desert them because the continuous urine leakage and odour make them socially unacceptable.

“It is believed that they have brought shame and dishonour to their families, therefore they are shunned by society and eventually become social outcasts.

“In spite of successful fistula repair, some of the patients cannot enjoy a happy married life because of painful sex.”

Ijaiya therefore appealed to government to make fistula repair services accessible, free or affordable as many of them are indigent.

He advocated for organised outreach surgeries where fistula surgeons and obstetrics fistula cases would be pooled to reduce the cases.

He added that corporate bodies, NGOs, universities, teaching hospitals and individuals could provide support for the pool effort of fistula repair.

  • Kwankwaso will remain presidential elections serial loser, says Ganduje

Kwankwaso will remain presidential elections serial loser, says Ganduje

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje has predicted that the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso would remain a serial loser at presidential elections.

He made this prediction while hosting the Bauchi state NNPP governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Haliru Dauda Jika, who formally returned back the APC at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja

Ganduje said that the pursuit of selfish interest as against national interest would continue to hinder the realisation of Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition.

He also blamed Kwankwaso’s inability to maintain a principled stand in party politics over the years as another factor that made the former minister of defence a perpetual loser.

The APC chairman, who hailed and described the decision of Jika to return back to the ruling party as a step in the right direction, noted that the former NNPP flag bearer in Bauchi state by now must have realised that the ‘Kwankwasiyya backed’ NNPP as “deceitful and exploitative.”

Receiving Jika with the entire NNPP structure in Bauchi state, Ganduje said: “When I got the news that you were coming to see me in my house to discuss the way forward, I knew I was meeting a very formidable politician in the person of Senator Jika who is a household name in Bauchi state.

“He is returning to a party that is very progressive and focused when we look at where he was coming from. He is coming from a party that used to be a decent party and highly respected but was later hijacked and polluted by the kwankwasiya group.

“We are happy that the original NNPP is taking back its proper position and leaving the kwankwasiya group deserted and thrown out completely.

“The Kwankwasiyya group headed by the former kano state governor was forced to go into a sabbatical leave for eight years before it found its way back to Government House in Kano.

“The Kwankwasiya head who wears a red cap is the person who prefers to be a king in hell than be a servant in paradise. He specializes in decieving people. He was first in PDP, came back to APC when it was formed. That was when the nPDP merged with the legacy parties to form the APC.

“Instead of staying in APC because of his ambition, he decided to leave APC after failing to pick the presidential ticket to go back to the PDP. He could not stay there again when he failed to pick the ticket.

“He still went on his own to contest the presidential poll and was defeated twice. He is a professional contestant for presidential elections and would remain a professional failure. He loves himself so much. I am happy you have dumped the red cap . It is a very sensible action that you have taken.”

The chairman then promised the returnees of inclusiveness in the running of the party in the state as part of ongoing effort to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 poll, stressing that the party regretted its performance at the just concluded general elections in the state.

The national chairman then carried out a symbolic change by removing the red cap, usual worn by the Kwankwasiya group and replaced it with the unbroken chain insignia cap of President Bola Tinubu to receive Jika and his group to APC fold.

Addressing newsmen after the ceremony, the former NNPP candidate said his decision to return to APC was informed by the wishes of his teeming supporters in Bauchi state.

He said: “My dumping NNPP for APC has nothing to do with the presidential candidate of NNPP. I have no issue with Kwankwaso. The interest of Bauchi State informed my returning back to APC.”

Admitting that Vice President Kashim Shettima and the First Lady, Remi Tinubu also influenced his decision to return to the APC fold, the 9th Assembly senator pledged to remain loyal to APC and to ensure its victory come 2027 both in the state and at federal level.

Court stops expulsion of Kwankwaso from NNPP

A High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice Usman Mallam Na’abba, has restrained members of the group loyal to the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) from acting as officials of the party or suspending or expelling its presidential candidate in this year’s general election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The injunction followed a suit filed by the party against its BoT Chairman, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam; its former National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Agbo Major; and 16 others, said to have been filed on August 30, 2023 and deposed to by Hashimu Suleiman.

The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the “purported suspension (of Kwankwaso) pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The court adjourned till October 5, 2023.

The injunction, which was issued on September 4, is coming as a former National Chairman of the party, Prof. Ahmed Rufai Alkali, formally resigned his membership of the party.

He said the crisis rocking the party appeared to have no end in sight.

The erstwhile chairman said, in his letter of resignation, that parties in the crisis have refused to allow elders of the party to mediate with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crises.

Alkali, who resigned in March, said he had hope then that his resignation was an opportunity for the party to move ahead and move fast to consolidate on the indisputable gains made during the last 2023 general election and prepare for the forthcoming elections

He said: “Unfortunately, in the last few weeks, the party has slipped deeper and deeper into avoidable crises and conflicts that have led to several cases of suspension and counter-suspension of key leaders of the party, acrimonious press war, accusations and counter- accusations, which regrettably have led to the factionalisation of the party.

“After the historic merger of the party in March 2022, together with other astute, highly dedicated, hardworking and loyal members of the party, we put in place a robust political structure nationwide.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) forged cohesion among our members and created a formidable national platform that fielded candidates for all elective offices from the State Houses of Assembly to National Assembly, the governorship and the Presidency. I am proud to be part of that Dream Team.

“It is on record that within a period of less than one year and despite the limited time corridor from the merger to the general election, the party won elections in the governorship, National Assembly and states’ Houses of Assembly seats.

“I voluntarily stepped aside as the National Chairman of the NNPP shortly after the general election this year to give room for new hands and fresh ideas in order to advance the party forward.

“As far I was concerned, I never believed in the culture of sit-tight in leadership positions nor that I was indispensable. The new Nigeria we all aspire to achieve must be built on the solid foundation of dedication, hard work, resilience and personal sacrifice.

“However, the recent disturbing developments in the NNPP, with the emergence of factions working against each other, are really unfortunate and counter-productive. Sadly, there appears to be no end in sight in this needless war of attrition.

“It seems that there’s an unwritten code by the warring factions not to allow elders of the party to mediate to finding a lasting solution to the crises. This is indeed regrettable and unhealthy for the growth and survival of any political party, especially an emerging political party such as the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

“Therefore, and in accordance with the NNPP Constitution, and having consulted widely, I hereby announce the withdrawal of my membership of the NNPP forthwith, and I pray and wish the party the best in her future endeavours.”

Addressing reporters at the party’a national secretariat yesterday in Abuja, NNPP’s Acting National Chairman Kawu Ali, whose address was read by National Auditor Oladipo Johnson, blamed some unnamed external forces that were “scared” of the 2027 general election as those responsible for what is happening in the party.

He said: “The results of our investigations have made it very clear that some external forces, scared of the 2027 elections, are behind these recalcitrant persons and their shenanigans. Their main target, no doubt, is His Excellency, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“We as a party, we are aware of their engagements and their plans. We know their limitations according to the statutes (NNPP Constitution, Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended). But since their mission, in collaboration with our detractors from outside the party, is to create confusion and distraction, the party, as a law-abiding organisation that believes in the rule of law, decided to approach the courts to put a stop to their evil machinations of disrupting our well laid down programmes for subsequent elections.”

“To this end, the NNPP as a party approached the Court to help restore sanity in the polity. It is an open secret that these former members are not backed by law in all they are doing. The arrow heads of this onslaught have ceased to be members of the party by virtue of their suspension/expulsion.

“However, in view of the backing they are getting from the opposition, we need to use the instrumentalities of the law to protect the sanctity of the party. Therefore, the party, in a suit on September 4, 2023, has been granted an interim order of injunction, pending the determination of the Motion on Notice which stops the Defendants, by themselves, their agents, cronies, and whosoever acting through or for them from parading themselves, issuing press releases, granting interviews, etc, as officers, leaders, or members of the party.”
