Poly Ibadan SUG president begs Makinde to intervene in ongoing strike

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Comrade Oladipupo Olamide Daniel, has made an urgent appeal to Governor Seyi Makinde, expressing deep concern over the indefinite strike declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Oyo State-Owned Tertiary Institutions.

In a letter written on behalf of the student body, the SUG President lamented the disruption of the academic calendar, the suspension of examinations, and the growing uncertainty faced by thousands of students.

“Your Excellency, we are frustrated and deeply worried about the situation. We acknowledge the right of our lecturers and school workers to demand for their requests to be attained, but we, the students, are the ones suffering the most from this impasse,” the letter read.

The letter further emphasized the repeated disruptions in the institution’s academic activities, which have prolonged students’ time in school far beyond the expected duration.

At the time the strike was declared, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, was in the middle of conducting examinations, making the situation even more devastating for students.

“There is no joy in spending all of our youthful years being just students; situations like these prevent us from growing in other areas of our lives. Education is the foundation of progress, and a disruption like this only sets us back,” the letter continued.

The students urged Governor Makinde to urgently intervene and engage with the staff unions to find a lasting resolution to the crisis, ensuring that students can return to their classrooms and continue their examinations without further delay.

“Our education, our dreams, and our future must not be sacrificed in this dispute. Please let us return to our classrooms to continue our exams,” the letter pleaded.

The Polytechnic Ibadan is among the institutions affected by the strike action, which was called due to unresolved demands by the JAC.

As students await the government’s response, many hope that Governor Makinde will take swift action to restore academic activities and ensure that their educational journey continues without further setbacks.

Oyo APC slams Makinde over Aleshinloye’s market inferno

The Oyo state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has slammed governor Seyi Makinde over Wednesday fire incident that raveged part of popular Aleshiloye market in Ibadan.

APC lamented incessant losses of lives and properties of residents of the state, blaming the cause on negligenc on the part of the state government.

A statement by the publicity secretary of the party in the state, Olawale Sadare, urged Makinde to admit his failure and brace up to arrest the ugly situation.

APC’s lamentations apparently came against the background of the Tuesday inferno which ravage the popular Aleshinloye market in Ibadan.

Recall that midnight fire, which raged for several hours, resulted in the loss of properties and other valuable materials estimated at billions of naira as it was the case in many other popular markets in the state in recent times.

The statement reads, “Our thoughts and prayers are with many traders and others in the popular Aleshinloye market who lost so much in money and property as a result of the unfortunate Tuesday night fire incident even as such cases have become a recurring decimal across the state in recent times.

“While we sympathize with all the victims, there is a dire need to challenge the Makinde administration on their approach to issues of safety, accident prevention and management in the state.

“Questions are being raised regarding the ceaseless reports of inability or helplessness of the State Fire Department to rise to the occasion whenever one case of emergency or the other arises in any part of the state.

“Credible sources confirmed that the Tuesday inferno raged for many hours as men of the Oyo State Fire Service could not do anything to help the situation due to lack of basic equipment.

“How does one explain to the world that Oyo state can only boast of only one or two fire fighting truck even when Gov. Makinde announced to the world that he visited Turkey in 2020 to purchase 10 of such service trucks with state money running into several millions of naira?

“Another issue of concern is the damage being done to the master plan of many major market places across by the agents of the state government to enable them build lock-up shops and malls indiscriminately.

“Good examples are found in Bola Ige International (New Gbagi) market, Agodi-Gate Motor Spare Parts market, Bodija market, Aleshinloye market among others where new structures have been developed illegally for the purpose of enriching some individuals within the corridor of power in the state and without recourse to physical planning law and safety standards.

“They use state power to build on access roads, car parks and reserved spaces while they also convert toilets, waste houses and worship centres to lock-up shops.

“Meanwhile, we appeal to Gov. Makinde to empower the State Fire Service Department and ensure that adequate manpower is available for its operations in every part of the state. It is equally important for the state to prioritize safety measures such as orientation and education of members of the public on how to prevent fire incidents everywhere at all times.

“Also, we demand detailed information on the 10 fire fighting trucks believed to have been paid for and imported from Turkey in 2020 while measures must be put in place to arrest the unabated trend of inferno and related disasters in the state.”

  • I’ll reveal preferred successor but Oyo people ’ll decide next Gov – Makinde

I’ll reveal preferred successor but Oyo people ’ll decide next Gov – Makinde

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde said he will show the people who he would prefer to succeed him in office.

He, however, said it will be left in the hands of the residents of the state to choose who will be Governor after him.

The governor stated in his bi-monthly newsletter published online where he explained the stand became imperative in view of some people showing concerns on what next for him and whether the next Governor would not remove some of his efforts.

He said his administration has redefined governance and showed the people of the state what is possible with strategic thinking and targeted implementations.

He noted that residents would decide the destiny of the State by choosing his successor, though he will reveal to them the individual he will support for the state to continue on the trajectory of sustainable development and transformation.

The Governor added since he has a little over two years in office, residents should look forward to more deliverables in the areas of infrastructure development, tourism, agribusiness and solid minerals development towards further expanding the economy of the state.

Governor Makinde, who made a reference to the recent visit of the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Julius Maada Bio, to the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub said the state has received recognitions from the international community for the efforts put into agriculture.

The Governor said that through its dependence on data, science and logic to drive agribusiness, the state has been able to achieve tremendous results, adding that President Bio was so impressed with the state’s agribusiness policies and efforts that he invited him to Sierra Leone for further engagements.

Makinde said: “It has been a very exciting week for us in Oyo State. We have received a lot of recognition from the international community for the work we have so far done in agriculture.

“I must say that when we started putting in the work over five years ago, we did not do it for the accolades. We did it because data, science and logic supported our decision to make agribusiness one of the core sectors through which we would move our people from poverty to prosperity.

“In doing this, we have taken the path less travelled. We have followed a strategic pathway that is not mainstream.

“I have spoken about how instead of buying tractors that the government may not be able to maintain, we have collaborated with the private sector to provide counterpart funding for our smallholder farmers.

“We have tested and seen what worked and what didn’t so that when we do this again, we will score higher than the abysmal 5 per cent success we just recorded.

“For example, we will spend more time communicating the policy and ensuring that our farmers know about the project and how it will be run. We will also ensure that any bureaucratic bottlenecks that exist are eliminated.

“We know that the only way to success is to embrace failure and learn from it. That is what has happened even with the Fasola project, which is getting us international acclaim. We ambitiously thought we could finish the project within one year. Well, we didn’t. But we have learnt so much from that pilot project, which we are implementing as we move to Eruwa and Ijaiye

“So, in the midst of all these developments, many have been asking – we have two years to go. What next? How do we know the next person won’t come and remove the foundation our administration has laid and is building on.

“The truth is, it is in the hands of the people of Oyo State to chart a new path and decide their destiny. You gave me the opportunity to serve you, and so you will also decide who will serve you next.

“As I stated during the 11th Omituntun Ramadan Lecture a few days ago, sometime in 2026, I will reveal who I will be supporting for the 2027 gubernatorial elections. It will then be left to you, the good people of Oyo State, to say if you want that continuity,” the governor added.

Ramadan: Rededicate yourselves to Allah, pray for Nigeria, Makinde tells Muslims

As Muslims in Oyo State and across the world begin the holy month of Ramadan, Governor Seyi Makinde has called on the Muslim Ummah to rededicate themselves to Allah (SWT) and use the sacred period to pray for his administration, Oyo State, and Nigeria.

Makinde made the appeal following the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the commencement of Ramadan on March 1, 2025.

Felicitating with Muslims on witnessing another Ramadan, the governor urged them to embrace the month as an opportunity for deeper worship, greater love for humanity, and renewed patriotism toward their state and the nation.

He said: “I felicitate the Muslim Ummah in Oyo State and across Nigeria on the sighting of the crescent moon, which signifies the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan.

“The Ramadan period is an auspicious season for us all to rededicate ourselves to the worship of Allah, the love of humanity and other virtues taught by the Holy Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him).

“The urge to rededicate to serving Allah and becoming better citizens finds a root in Surah Baqarah Verse 183, which says “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.

“As I have always said, our administration has enjoyed massive support from the Muslim Ummah. So, this is another opportunity to pray for us and to pray for our nation; that Allah will continue to guide us as we do everything possible to uplift our dear state and move its people from poverty to prosperity. I say Ramadan Kareem to everyone.”

    Makinde’s inexpedient intervention in Osun

Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde was a guest at the inauguration ceremony of the ‘newly elected’ LG chairmen in Osun State last Sunday, and was flanked by PDP Governors’ Forum chairman Bala Mohammed and Governor Ademola Adeleke. In his remarks, he sensationally warned the APC not to turn Osun State into ‘Wild, Wild West’. Said he without a hint of discomfort or hesitation: “We don’t want wild, wild west again. They (APC) should stay away from this zone. We want to provide dividends of democracy to our people peacefully. If anybody has a judgement, there is a procedure for enforcement of court decisions. It is illegal to resort to self-help. The era of resorting to federal might is long gone.”

In the early years of his first term, and despite being in the conservative PDP, Mr Makinde was widely seen as a promising shining light not only in the Southwest, but also in the country as a whole. That promise has sadly remained unfulfilled, perhaps because his initial colourfulness was in fact not anchored on anything ideological or systematic. That he was a guest of Mr Adeleke does not mean he must turn a blind eye to the substance of the case in Osun. In his remarks, he spoke about the rule of law. Yet, it is strange that he failed to see the contradictions between what he advocates and the abridged processes that led to the ‘election’ of the LG chairmen.
