  • Man arraigned for ‘collecting N738, 000 under false pretence’

    A 34-year-old man, Cletus Ngbonyebi, yesterday appeared at a Badagry Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N738, 000 under false pretence.

    He is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Akpan Ikem said the accused committed the offences last November 22 at about 10am at Seme Border area of Badagry.

    He alleged that the accused collected N738, 000 from the complainant, Shadrack Unachukwu, on the pretext of taking his two brothers-in-law to Morocco.

    “The accused stole N738, 000, which belonged to the complainant and failed to fulfil his part of the agreement reached with the complainants,” the prosecutor said.

    The accused, however, denied the charges.

    Magistrate Patrick Adekomaya admitted the accused to N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on May 21.

  • Man arraigned for ‘stealing’ shoes

    A 33-year-old man, Ibrahim Shehu, has appeared at an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing eight pairs of shoes at a mosque during prayers.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Kehinde Olatunde said the defendant committed the offence for eight months at Okobaba Aiyetoro Central Mosque, Ebute Meta.

    He alleged that the defendant was caught with the shoes belonging to Balogun Mukaila and Saheed Ewenla, the complainants.

    The prosecutor said the shoes were valued at N40,000.

    Magistrate Tolu Agoro granted the defendant N50,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    He said one of the sureties should be a community leader at Arewa community.

    The case continues on May 24.

  • Man arraigned for alleged burglary, theft

    A 35-year-old man, Suraju Akindele, yesterday appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for alleged burglary and theft of valuables worth N75,000.

    The defendant, of no fixed address and occupation, is facing a three-count charge of felony, burglary and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Zedekiah Orogbemi alleged that the accused last October 13 around 12:30am burgled a room at 25, Akinsiku Street in Okitipupa.

    He alleged that the defendant stole a Samsung camera phone, LG DVD player, wristwatch, necklace and other valuables worth N75,000, belonging to the complainant, Sade Arowolo.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Dickson Ogunfuyi granted the accused N50,000 bail and one surety in the like sum.

    He said the surety must produce evidence of one year tax clearance as part of the bail conditions.

  • Man arraigned for alleged ‘assault’

    A man, Oluwaseyi Dada, who allegedly battered a driver, Mr.  Saliu Tunde Kareem, was yesterday brought before an Aramoko-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Aramoko-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

    Dada, 37, was arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of assault and damage before Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun.

    Prosecutor Chidi Christian said the defendant committed the offences on December 19 at Palace Road, Aramoko-Ekiti .

    He alleged that the defendant mercilessly beat up Mr. Kareem, a driver with DAMOD Water, by dragging him off the steering of a Toyota Dyna Cabstar while on motion, causing bruises on his body.

    The court heard that the defendant damaged the vehicle valued at N3 million.

    It was loaded with juice and sachet water belonging to Mrs. Akin Ibimilua Ronke.

    Christian said: “The offences contravene sections 351 and 451 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2010.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Adeosun, who granted him N100,000 bail with one surety in the like sum, said the surety must be resident within the magisterial district.

    The case continues on January 21.

  • Man arraigned for alleged assault

    A man, Oluwaseyi Dada, who allegedly assaulted a driver, Mr. Saliu Tunde Kareem, was at the weekend arraigned at an Aramoko-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court,  Aramoko-Ekiti, in Ekiti State.

    Dada, 37, was arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of assault and damage before Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun.

  • Man arraigned for alleged cultism

    A 22-year-old man, Seun Matthew, yesterday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court for alleged membership of a cult and possession of a stolen phone.

    Matthew pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie said the accused committed the offence on December 3 at First Bank roundabout, Yaba, Lagos.

    He said the accused had confessed to the police that he is a member of the ‘Eiye Confraternity’.

    Ihiehie alleged that a stolen phone was found in his possession.

    Magistrate E. Kubeinje granted the accused N50, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She adjourned till January 14.

     

  • Man arraigned for allegedly biting policeman

    A 36-year-old tiler, Mafred Uchola, has been arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly biting a police officer on duty.

    Prosecutor Aondohemba Koti said the accused committed the offence on October 5 at Promised Land, Mushin in Lagos.

    He said the accused and others at large conspired to assault Insp. David Asaolu while he was performing his duty.

    “The accused, a member of an unlawful society, beat up the complainant and inflicted injuries on his check by biting him,’’ Koti said.

    He said the police received a distress call on the activities of the accused, who displayed weed suspected to be Indian hemp in public and constituted public nuisance.

    “The complainant and his team stormed the scene. On sighting the policemen, the accused and his accomplices took to their heels.

    “The accused was caught by the complainant, he assaulted the police officer in order to escape, but was overpowered by other policemen.

    “A polythene bag containing a cutlass and weed were recovered from him,’’ the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravene sections 57, 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.   The accused, a resident of Mushin, however, pleaded innocence to the three-count charge of belonging to unlawful society, assault and conspiracy.

    Magistrate M.O. Tanimola granted the accused bail of N100, 000 with one surety.

    She said the surety must be employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned till November 19 for mention.

     

  • Man arraigned for alleged stealing

    A 35-year-old unemployed man, Dapo Samuel, was yesterday arraigned at an Ijede Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, for alleged stealing and malicious damage.

    Prosecutor Aminu Isaac said the accused, whose address was not provided, stole a sub-massive water pumping machine valued at N40, 000.

    He said Samuel damaged a pumping machine water pipe worth N25, 000.

    Isaac said the property belonged to Mr. Fatai Aluko of 40, Dada Street, Itunpate, Ikorodu.

    He told the court that the accused committed the offences on October 20 at Noble Professional Estate, Ikorodu.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 287 and 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate A. Oshodi Makanju granted the accused bail at N30, 000 with one surety.

    She adjourned the case till November 1 for hearing.

     

  • Man arraigned for alleged theft

    A 28-year-old man, Aina Gabriel, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged theft of engine and gear.

    Gabriel, whose address was not given, is facing a one-count charge of stealing.

    Prosecutor Johnson Okunade alleged that the accused and others at large committed the offence on August 16 about 2:30am in Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused and others at large stole a Sienna motor engine and gear valued at N500,000, belonging to Mr. Alabi Oluwafemi.

    Okunade said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mr. Gbenga Bejide, urged the court to grant him bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

    Chief Magistrate Mr. Adesoji Adegboye granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case till November 30 for mention.

     

  • Man arraigned for ‘fraud’

    The police yesterday arraigned Adeshina Rabiu, 49, at an Ijede Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly obtaining N600,000 on false pretence

    The accused, whose address was not known, is standing trial before Chief Magistrate A. Oshodi Makanju on a three-count charge of felony to wit obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

    Prosecutor Aminu Isaac said the accused committed the offence in 2009 in Gberigbe,  Ikorodu.

    According to him, the accused collected the money from Mrs. Okeowo Grace on the pretext of giving her three plots of land in Gbokuta, Ikorodu knowing it to be false.

    The offence is punishable under sections 314, 280 (a) and 287 of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate Makanju admitted the accused to bail of N50, 000 with one surety in the like sum.

    She adjourned the case till October 25 for further hearing.
