    Man arraigned for allegedly obstructing Obaseki’s convoy

    A 27-year-old man, Progress Raji, has been arraigned at an Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin City, Edo State, for allegedly obstructing the convoy of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

    He was said to have allegedly obstructed the convoy on February 18 on Country Home Road, off Sapele Road.

    Raji, who was arraigned on a two-count charge, was also accused of driving with expired driver’s licence.

    He was said to have committed the offence on February 18 near Country Home Road, off Sapele Road, Benin City.

    The charges are punishable under Section 18 of Road Traffic Law, Cap 148, Vol. 1 and Regulation 42 of Road Traffic Law Cap 48 Vol. 5 of former Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 applicable to Edo State.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. O. Ojo, granted bail to the accused after his counsel, Matthew Adebola, applied for bail, considering the nature of the offences. She granted N20,000 bail with a surety.

    Ojo adjourned the case till March 2 for hearing.

    Man arraigned for alleged theft

    A 24-year-old man, Pakute Oseni, has been arraigned at an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly stealing a vehicle, worth N4.5 million.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oseni, of no fixed address, was in court on a charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Folake Ewe, told the court that Oseni and others at large, allegedly conspired to steal the vehicle.

    She said Oseni was alleged to have stolen Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), registered as AGL 553 DX, valued at N4.5 million.

    Ewe said: “The offences were committed on January 23, 2016, at 8 pm, at Alarere, on new Ife Road, Ibadan, where the car was parked.”

    She said the offences were contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 (9) (10A) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2,000.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Mrs. Jejelola Ogunbona granted the defendant bail at N100,000 with two sureties.

    She adjourned the case till January 31 for hearing.

     

     

     

  • Man arraigned for ‘N23.4m fraud’

    A former employee of First Nazarret Nigeria Limited, Anthony Oladejo-Adeola was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere High Court for allegedly diverting 13 trailer loads of Dangote Cement worth N23.4million.

    The defendant allegedly conspired with others who are still at large to commit the offence on March 29, 2011.

    Oladejo pleaded not guilty.

    His counsel, M. A Oyebanji urged the court to allow him to continue to enjoy the bail he was earlier granted.

    Justice Sybil Nwaka granted her request and adjourned the case till May, 5, 2018.

    Man arraigned for alleged N2.1m fraud

    Ekiti State Police Command has arraigned a 38-year-old man, Olubolamo Kolade, at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged fraud.

    The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a one count charge of fraud.

    The prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between May 2015 and August 2017 in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant stole N2,171,120, belonging to the Office of Self Reliance Economic Advancement Programme (SEAP), Ado-Ekiti.

    Okunade said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Law of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and present witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    His counsel, Mr. Seun Oyebanji, urged the court to grant him bail, promising that he won’t jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to the defendant at N400,000 with two sureties, one of who must be a civil servant.

    He adjourned the case till December 20 for hearing.

  • Man arraigned for ‘iron rod ‘theft’ in Osun

    A 30-year-old man, Mustapha Lukeman, was yesterday arraigned in an Osogbo Chief Magistrate’s Court in Osun State over alleged theft of iron rods.

    Lukeman is facing a one-count charge bordering on theft.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Rasaki Olaiwola told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 22 at about 5:30am at Freedom Park, Old Garage area of Osogbo.

    Olaiwola said the accused stole iron rods belonging to the Osun Government and he was apprehended by the police.

    He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    Lukeman pleaded not guilty.

    Counsel to the accused, Mrs Adeyinka Abosede, prayed the court to grant her client bail in the most liberal terms.

    Magistrate Ashiru Ayeni granted the accused N50,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Ayeni said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and show evidence of tax payment to the Osun Government.

    He ruled that the sureties must also attach two passport-sized photographs to their affidavit of means of livelihood.

    The case was adjourned till December 12.

     

     

     

  • Man arraigned for allegedly raping girl, 14

    An aged man, Isiaka Alade, has been arraigned before an Ikeja High Court for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl (names withheld).

    Alade was arraigned before Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya on a one- count charge of child defilement contrary to section 137 Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

    According to the prosecutor, Mrs T.N. Aderiye, the defendant, who on account of his old age was allowed to sit in the dock, had between 2013 and December 2014 at 23, Baale Lawan Street, Ayobo defiled his 14-year-old victim “by having sexual intercourse with her”.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the one count charge offence preferred against him by the state government.

    The charge, which was written in English, was interpreted to the defendant in Yoruba by a court registrar.

    A 35-year-old man, Michael Olanrewaju, was yesterday arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged stealing of a she-goat.

    Police prosecutor Oriyomi Akinwale told the court that the defendant committed the

    offence on September 25 about 7 p.m. at 94, Kajola Area, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant on the day stole a she-goat valued at N26,000, property of Usman Oriye.

    Akinwale said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap C 16, Vol. 1, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty. His counsel prayed the court to grant him bail in liberal terms, promising that he would not jump bail.

    The prosecutor objected, saying goat stealing was becoming rampant.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, granted the accused bail at N50,000 with two sureties. She said one of them must be a resident of Ado-Ekiti.

    Ajibade adjourned the case till October 17 for further hearing.

    A 35-year-old man, Michael Olanrewaju, who allegedly stole a she-goat valued at N26,000, was yesterday arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State.

    Akinwale alleged that the accused stole a she-goat valued at N26, 000, belonging to Usman Oriye.

    He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of Criminal Code, Cap. C 16, Vol. 1, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Taiwo Ajibade, admitted the accused to bail at N50, 000 with two sureties.

    She said one of the sureties must be a resident of Ado-Ekiti.

    Ajibade adjourned the case till October17 for hearing.

    Man arraigned for N19m fraud

    The police yesterday arraigned a man, Omolayo Kayode, at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, for allegedly defrauding a businessman, Eric Ben, of N19.6 million.

    Police prosecutor Femi Falade told the court that the accused committed the offence between August and September 2012 in Ado-Ekiti.

    The charge sheet reads: “That you, Omolayo Kayode, sometime between August and September 2012 in Ado-Ekiti, within Ado-Ekiti Judicial Division, under false pretense of being a forex trader and with intent to defraud.

    “You did obtain the sum of N19,600,000 from Eric Ben.”

    Falade also told the court he had three witnesses to prove his case, praying for an adjournment to enable him prepare for the case.

    The prosecutor opposed the motion for application for bail by counsel to the accused, Rotimi Adabembe.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge against him.

    Adabembe, counsel to the accused, filed a 44-paragraph affidavit for bail in favour of his client in pursuant to sections 158 to 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2016.

    Justice Donatus Okorowo admitted Kayode to bail at N5,000,000 and one surety.

    Justice Okorowo said the surety must have a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction worth N5,000,000 and that the Certificate of Occupancy be submitted to the court’s registrar.

    He adjourned the case till November 23 and December 7 for hearing.

    Man arraigned for murder

    A middle aged man, Abacha Abdullahi was yesterday arraigned before a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, for alleged murder.

    Abdullahi was arraigned before the court presided by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye for allegedly murdering one Mr. Moses Dossou by stabbing him with a knife in the stomach.

    He was arraigned on a one count charge of murder.

    The state prosecutor, Yahu Oshuala from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) alleged that Abdullahi committed the offence with one Mallam Sheriff said to be at large on July 20, 2014 around 12pm at 5 Oreleye Crescent, Awuse Estate, Opebi Ikeja.

    ýOshuala said the offence is contrary to section 221 of the criminal laws of Lagos State 2011.

    When the charge was read, the defendant who was in court with his counsel, Chris Ohaji, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

    Juctice Ipaye subsequently adjourned the matter till April 6 and 7, 2016 for trial.
