    Man arraigned for stealing N48m

    The Edo State Police Command has arraigned a 32-year-old man, Doyin Abiodun, before an Egor Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N48 million from a commercial bank.

    Abiodun was arraigned on a seven-count charge of forgery and stealing.

    He was alleged to have committed the offence in April 2013 at the Uselu branch of EcoBank Nigeria Plc.

    The accused allegedly conspired with others and forged an identity card belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) with the name “Oboite Jonathan Alele”.

    The fake identity card was said to have been used to defraud and facilitate a credit loan of N32 million and N7 million from the bank.

    A letterhead of the Edo Sports Council, Benin, was alleged to have been forged with the intent to defraud and facilitate a loan facility from the bank.

    The N7 million and N9 million, being the property of the bank, was said to have been stolen by the accused.

    The offences are punishable under sections 467 and 390 (5) (6) of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, as applicable to Edo State.

    Abiodun pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate William Aziegbemhin granted him bail for N3 million and a surety, who must be an employee of a recognised organisation, in like sum.

    He adjourned the matter till October 5 for further hearing.

  • Man arraigned for ‘murder’

    A middle-aged man, Muideen Adedokun, was yesterday arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, for allegedly killing a woman, Grace Alabi.

    Adedokun allegedly hit the late Alabi with a vehicle marked XA 498 AKD (LAGOS).

    The accident occurred around 8:40am on January 1 in Ido Osun Egbedore Local Government.

    The police prosecution said Adedokun drove dangerously without regard for other road users.

    Adedokun pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

    Defence counsel Olalekan Sanusi urged the court to grant his client bail.

    The Senior Magistrate, Lasisi Adebayo, granted Adedokun N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    One of the sureties must own a house within the magisterial district.

  • Man arraigned for ‘stealing’ goat

    An 18-year-old-man, Ade Adeyemi, was yesterday arraigned before an Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, for allegedly stealing a goat, valued at N15,000.

    Adeyemi allegedly committed the offence last Saturday at Oke Ureje in Ado-Ekiti.

    Police prosecutor Oriyomi Akinwale prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file.

    He pleaded that the goat recovered from the accused on the scene of the crime be released to the complainant, Ms. Rabi Abelewaji.

    The Magistrate, A. H. Anoma, granted the accused N20,000 bail and released the goat to the owner. The case was adjourned till March 6.

    Adeyemi denied the allegation, saying he has never stolen anything in his life.

    He said he was arrested by a member of a vigilance group while going to buy a cigarette after 5am.
