  • Man arraigned for ‘stabbing’ customer

    •’Punishment will act as a deterrent to others’ 

    A 30-year-old man, Muhammad Hassan, has been arraigned at an Oredo Magistrates’ Court, Edo State, for allegedly stabbing his customer, Emeka Nwoku, with a ‘suya’ knife.

    The suspect was arraigned on a one-count charge of causing bodily harm on July 29.

    Prosecutor Patrick Agbonifo told the court the offence contravened Section 335 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State, now applicable in Edo State.

    Hassan pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Mrs. I.A. Osayande granted him bail at N190,000 and a surety. She adjourned the case till August 16 for hearing.

  • Man arraigned for alleged tricycle theft

    A 29-year-old man, Chukwudi Ugo, yesterday appeared at an Epe Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged theft of a tricycle, worth N670,000.

    Ugo, whose residential address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecutor Moses Oyekanmi told the court the accused committed the offence at 5:05 am on July 9, on Adelero Road, Ajah, Lagos.

    He said the accused stole the tricycle, registered as KTU 52 QE, valued at N670,000, property of Samuel Friday, the complainant.

    “My Lord, the accused stole the Keke from where it was parked.

    “We have witnesses, who saw him near the Keke before it was reported stolen,” Oyekanmi said.

    The offences contravene sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The court granted bail to the accused at N70,000 with two sureties.

    Magistrate Mrs. O.A. Erusiafe-Fowowe said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State government.

    She adjourned the case till August 13 for mention.

  • Man arraigned for alleged forgery

    The police at the weekend arraigned Mr. Samuel Terfa at a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for alleged possession of three CID legal stamps and other forged documents.

    Terfa, of Mabuchi, FCT, is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and forgery.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    The judge, Mr. Bello Rufa’i, admitted the defendant to bail at N500,000 and two sureties.

    He adjourned the case till August 6 for hearing.

    Prosecutor James Anyenn told the court the defendant committed the alleged offences on May 25.

    He said the accused was arrested following an intelligence report to the Inspector-General of Police Office.

    Anyenn said besides the three forged CID legal stamps, the defendant was also in possession of 20 police character certificates and 200 copies of forged police finger print documents.

    He said the accused could not give a satisfactory account of how he came about the documents.

    According to him, the offences contravene sections 97, 364 and 368 of the Penal Code.

  • Man arraigned for alleged fraud in Ondo

    The Ondo State Police Command has arraigned Afeez Smith before a Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ondo town for allegedly obtaining money under false pretence.

    The accused was charged with five-count charge of fraud, stealing and unlawful possession of property.

    Smith had earlier been arrested by the Yaba Divisional Police Station in Ondo for allegedly claiming to be the biological son of a former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and current Chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC), Alhaji Musiliu Smith.

    The accused was also said to have used the name to defraud suspecting persons in Ondo town, including some policemen serving in the community.  He was accused of obtaining N750,000 from Fabode Akinsola under false pretence to supply a Toyota Corolla car, which he reportedly failed to produce.

    Smith was also accused of stealing N50,000, N30,000 and N220,000 from Akinlade Ajibola, Komalafe Abiodun and Akinbobola Olukayode.

    When the charges were read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty to them.

    The police prosecutor, Olagbayi Bernard, told the court that the accused committed the offences, contrary to and punishable under sections 430, 390, 419 and 383 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

     

    He urged the court to grant him a short adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses to prosecute the case.

    Lawyers to the accused, Mr. O. O. Afolayan and Ikuemonisan prayed the court to grant him bail on most liberal term.

    They said he would not jump bail, if it was granted him.

    Presiding Magistrate B. F. Ajibade granted the bail with N1 million in the like sum with two sureties who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

    She ordered the sureties to swear to an affidavit of means with evidence of tax payment while their identities must be verified by the police.

    The magistrate adjourned the matter till July 4 for hearing.

     

  • Man arraigned for ‘indomie theft’

    The police at the weekend arraigned Nasiru Abubakar at a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing N450,000 and three packs of indomie.

    He was arraigned for criminal trespass, house-breaking and theft, offences he denied committing.

    Prosecutor John Okpa told the court Maryam Umar of Behind Yahuza Suya, Kubwa, Abuja, reported the matter at Kubwa Police Station on May 11.

    He said the defendant trespassed into the complainant’s premises, broke into her shop and stole N450,000.

    Okpa said the defendant stole three packs of Hungry-man size indomie and peak milk, adding that the items were recovered from the defendant.

    He said the offences contravened sections 348, 46 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant told the court he usually swept the complainant’s shop, and found the indomie and milk in the dustbin.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, granted the defendant bail at N450,000 with one surety, and adjourned the matter till June 11 for hearing.

     

  • Man arraigned for alleged visa fraud

    The police at the weekend arraigned Sunday Oke, 38, at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ekiti State, for alleged visa fraud.

    The accused, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a one-count charge of fraud.

    Prosecutor Johnson Okunade alleged the accused collected N620,000 from Mr Damilola Kolade on the pretence of securing United Arab Emirates’ visa for him.

    He told the court the accused committed the offence on January 2 at a branch of a bank in Ado-Ekiti.

    Okunade said the offence contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti, 2012.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty, and was granted bail by Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye at N200,000 with two sureties.

    He adjourned the case till June 13 for hearing.

  • Man arraigned for ‘disrupting’ APC primaries

    The police have arraigned a 50-year-old man, Ojo Olakunle, at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly disrupting the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries.

    Olakunle, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of destruction of ballot box, interference with the ballot box and acting in a disorderly manner.

    Prosecutor Femi Falade told the court the defendant allegedly committed the offences with others at large on May 5 at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged the defendant attempted to destroy the ballot box and ballot papers used at the election.

    The prosecutor said the accused, without authority, interfered with and threw down the ballot box at the poll centre.

    “He conducted himself in disorderly manner to prevent the poll from holding,’’ he said.

    The offences contravene sections 118 (5), 118 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    His counsel, Mr. Odunayo Okunade, urged the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms, promising he will not jump bail.

    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye granted the accused bail at N200,000 with two sureties.

     

  • Man arraigned for ‘N.2m land fraud’

    A 35-year-old man, Bamidele Fagboro, has appeared at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State, for allegedly obtaining money under false pretence in a land deal.

    He was accused of defrauding Mr. Samuel Olowoife, of N250, 000, on the pretence of selling a plot to him.

    The accused is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.

    The prosecutor, Ikebuilo, told the court that the accused and one other at large committed the offence opposite First Bank, Secretariat Road, Ado-Ekiti about 2 pm in September.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Dolapo Akosile, adjourned the case till April 9 for mention.

  • Man arraigned for possessing Indian hemp

    A 25-year-old man, Muhammed Usman, was, yesterday, arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged possession of Indian hemp.

    He was, however, granted bail at N100,000.

    Chief Magistrate Aderopo Adegboye ordered the suspect to provide one surety.

    He said the surety must be employed and his address verified.

    Usman, whose address was not provided, is facing a one-count charge of unlawful possession of Indian hemp.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Police prosecutor Bamikole Olasunkanmi told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 14, about 12:30 pm, in Atikankan, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused  had in his possession one wrap of Indian hemp.

    Olasunkanmi said the offence contravened Section 5 (1) (b) of the Indian Hemp Act Cap 16, Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2014.

    The court adjourned the case till May 5 for mention.

  • Man arraigned for ‘church burglary’

    A man, Mohammed Ibrahim yesterday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a public address system valued at N120,000 in a church.

    Ibrahim is standing trial on charges of stealing and burglary.

    Prosecutor Akeem Raji told the court that the offence were committed on February 26 at Assemblies of God, Church, Ilupeju branch, Lagos.

    Raji said the accused broke into the church and stole a mobile megaphone valued at N120,000.

    The prosecutor said the accused also stole a gold necklace valued at N50,000 and a cash of N2,000 being property of one Chibueze Anyanwu.

    Raji added that the accused was sighted by a vigilance group in the area and was arrested.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate T.O. Shomade granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Shomade adjourned the case till March 23.
