MohBad’s wife more of a suspect than Naira Marley, Sam Larry – VeryDarkMan

Social media sensation Martins Victor Otse aka Verydarkman has alleged MohBad’s extended family, particularly his wife, Omowunmi is more of a suspect over singer’s demise.

He declared Omowunmi as the prime suspect over her hubby’s death, backing up his allegations with several claims.

According to Verydarkman, some people are working real hard to shield MohBad’s wife and willfully pushing all the blames to Naira Marley and his associate, Sam Larry.

He insisted that regardless of the narrative being propagated about the Marlian boss and Sam Larry’s alleged involvement in Mohbad’s death, one thing was sure that Wunmi also participated in torturing the deceased and driving him into depression.

In a recent clip shared on his social media handles, the internet activist said: “According to the story reaching me now, when Mohbad joined Marlian Music, he didn’t have an account. It was his wife’s account they were paying money into. It was his wife that was collecting his money.

“Secondly, Mohbad and his wife shared same iCloud account together. That means she knows everything that comes and goes into that boy’s life. He trusted her 100%.

“Again, you remember that interview where Mohbad’s father said he bought land in the wife’s name and even in the wife’s mother’s name. Where the father had to call her and question her about the matter. At first the wife’s mother denied the claim. But when he persisted, she finally agreed that Mohbad bought one land in her name.

“We’re seeing a lot of things unfolding. And now, we are hearing that the wife’s mother is a police. So, why did the boy have to go through all he endured without the wife’s mother using her influence to intervene and save him?

“Whether you like it or not, this girl is a suspect. I don’t know how you people want to paint it with different excuses about her mourning, in pain and unable to produce breast milk. That’s you people’s business.

“If you like insult me from now till tomorrow, I stand on what I said, she’s a suspect. She’s part of the people that drove Mohbad mad.

“That depression the boy complained about which you people are now calling only Sam Larry’s name, she joined in driving him into depression. Because in that surfaced voice recording, the boy said, “I told you not to put a cloth on my head but you did”.

“The girl also tortured that boy, whether you like it or not, she’s a suspect. And again, she should tell us the nurse that came to treat the boy in the house.

“She should tell us the truth. Who’s that nurse they brought to treat him in the house and after the treatment didn’t work, they had to take him to the hospital.

“Different stories they’re not telling you people about the wife. They want to put her off this thing. They want to narrow this thing down to Naira Marley and Sam Larry.”

Resounding his allegations against Mohbad’s wife as the main suspect in the foregoing, Verydarkman added: “And like I said, the wife is a staunch suspect. In short, she’s more of a suspect that the two of them (Naira Marley and Sam Larry).”

MohBad: Your demand for guaranteed security laughable, Tonto Dikeh tells Naira Marley

Actress-turned-politician Tonto Dikeh has described singer, Naira Marley’s stipulated condition for his return to the country as laughable.

The Marlian boss who’s been fingered with associate, Sam Larry for alleged involvement in the tragic passing of Mohbad had specified he would return to Nigeria if the authorities would guarantee his safety.

After Mohbad’s death, several clips of people threatening to ‘take out’ Naira Marley on sight surfaced on the internet.

Apparently scared for his life, Marley pressed with the need to honour the authorities’ invitation, requested the guarantee of his security.

Reacting, Dikeh derided Naira over his demand for security when he didn’t allow Mohbad ‘breathe’ while he was alive.

She accused the Marlian huncho of a number of atrocities againshis former signee which led to the ultimate demise of the 27-year-old artiste.

“You never guaranteed his safety and always hurt him at every given chance!!

Captioning her post, the mother of one added: “No sleep for the wicked.”

  • Blues for Mohbad

    Blues for Mohbad

I must confess right at the onset that I had absolutely no knowledge of Mohbad until the day after his death was announced. That being the case, I must confess that his name in the title of this piece is no more than a convenient peg on which to hang this article. After all, I have very little knowledge of the artiste and even less about his artistic work. These notwithstanding, it would be negligent for a regular columnist to ignore the furore which the passing of Mohbad has generated in virtually all media outlets over the last two weeks.

The first time ever that I heard about Mohbad, real name,  Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba was in a news feed which announced his sudden death. What drew my immediate attention to the subjet was his age. There is some element of waste when a twenty-seven year old person is reported dead especially when the death was sudden as it was in this case. The first thought in such circumstances is that there is more to that event than meets the eye. In the case of Mohbad such suspicion was justified by the fact that the young man had questioned the status of his safety shortly before he died in what has turned out to be inexplicable circumstances . Given this background, it is puzzling that he was rushed into his grave less than twenty-four hours after he died. It has even been said that his father had to be persuaded from lowering his son’s body into the grave as late as midnight on the day of his demise. One wonders why there was the need to dispose of his body with such  undignified haste.

Even under the most normal of circumstances, there is a great deal of sadness attached to the death of a twenty-seven year old.  At that age, one is confidently expected to be in prime physical, mental and psychological condition. At that age one is expected to be on the threshold of one career or the other after a long period of tutelage. At that age one would have invested in training for a career and thinking of settling down to begin to shoulder marital responsibilities. To put it into proper context, death at twenty-seven is a tragedy of monumental proportions not only for the immediate family of the victim but to society as well. Up till then, the dead person would have been a consumer of public amenities and just about to become a contributor to societal needs. It was from these points of view that I considered the report of the sudden demise of Mohbad.

Within twenty-four hours after I became aware of the person however, it became clear to me that Mohbad was not just any young man but one who had contributed much more to society than your typical twenty-seven year old. On the contrary, he was a big star, shining uncommonly brightly in a Milky way of stars, a young man of exceptional promise which made his demise all the more painful from both personal and societal points of view. I have always been in awe of people with any form of musical talent probably because my only talent in that direction is severely restricted to listening to the product of those to whom the Muses have been kind enough to admit into the brotherhood of Orpheus. He it was who was so gifted that he was able to charm his way into the underworld there to seduce Hades with his talent. He gave such a performance before the the Lord of the Underworld that his wife Euripides who had died was given leave to go back to the land of the living. Such is the power of music that according to the immortal bard, music is the food of love which sickens and dies in its absence. I have always wished that I had a modicum of musical talent but having lived so long without it, I have learnt to come to terms with my condition.

I have been a lover of music all my life, since I was first fascinated by the music of the young Victor Olaiya singing Mumude around 1958. However, I really arrived on the music scene in those halcyon days of the sixties, just after independence when music of all genres began to shake our air waves. Music was not only coming from Ghana, Britain and the USA but it was being made and released by a crowd of musicians right here in Nigeria, so much so that the music aficionado was spoilt for choice. Those were the heydays of highlife and there is little doubt that the high priest of highlife was Bobby Benson.

Bobby Benson had started his career as an entertainer in the period after World War II and formed a big band which played a broad repertoire of music styles and was fronted by his wife who danced to the melodies of her husband’s band. However, it was the time that highlife was taking shape and Bobby Benson became a pioneer of this genre which was to become very popular in both Ghana and Nigeria. It is not therefore coincidental that Bobby Benson who played trumpet, saxophone and piano had space in his band for a bevvy of young musicians who can now be regarded as having provided a backbone for the music genre which over a span of more than seventy years has refused to die. It might have changed shape and evolved in other directions but it has survived all kinds of tribulations and after all said and done, there is Afrobeats today because there was highlife and people like Bobby Benson who brought it to life. Bobby Benson was not just an entertainer who played highlife but a mentor to some of the legends who left their mark on the development of that musical genre. The alumni of the Bobby Benson school school of highlife music reads like a list of who is who in the field.

One of his earliest mentees was Victor Olaiya who in his prime was reverently referred to as the evil genius of highlife and was closest to being named as the official highlife musician to the nation as he played several gigs on official occasions. He was on the bandstand when Queen Elizabeth came visiting in 1956 and shared the bandstand with the great, Louis Armstrong to celebrate Nigeria’s independence in 1960. He was back three years later to celebrate with the country when she attained the status of a Republic. One other factor that is worthy of note is Victor Olaiya’s longevity as he was active on the music scene for more than sixty swinging years as band leader and front line trumpeter. There was also a time when he joined the soul music bandwagon at a time when that American export was sweeping the world.

Another Bobby Benson alumnus was Victor Uwaifo who first came to public attention for his high jump exploits as a student of St, Gregory’s  College in the fifties. Known for his virtuosity with the guitar, Uwaifo turned to, or rather, combined his music with academics and went all the way to becoming a Professor of fine arts at the University of Benin. Joromi, perhaps his best known work was a monster hit in 1966 but has retained a freshness which has continued to impress generations unborn at the time it was composed.

John Akintola Ademuwagun who left the sedate setting of the classroom for the hurly burly music world also served tutelage under Bobby Benson. Better known as Roy Chicago, he was one of the better known bandleaders in the sixties as his Abalabi Rhythm. Dandies fronted by the velvety voiced Tunde Osofisan churned out chart busters one after the other with onilegogoro composed by Jimi Solanke being the biggest hit of them all. At over eighty, Jimi Solanke is still making music in his own inimitable fashion. Roy Chicago’s greatest claim to fame was that he not only reached into the richness of Yoruba culture to create his own unique sound but somewhere along the way he introduced gángan into highlife.

Another product of the Bobby Benson school was the maestro from the creeks, the unforgettable Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson. Just writing that name has led to an attack of goose pimples brought on by the memory of the smoothness of his music. For good measure, Rex Lawson played trumpet with both Victor Olaiya and Roy Chicago before forming his own band. Unfortunately, his enormous potential was truncated by death at the age of thirty-three. His was a case of not how long but how well as he left behind a massive legacy in the minds of those who have been fortunate to have the opportunity of listening to the music of this honorary but highly appreciated Cardinal of the Church of highlife. Zeal Onyia and Eddie Okonta are two other giants of highlife who once studied at the feet of Bobby Benson.

All the musicians mentioned above were not only superb instrumentalists, they were all composers of the first order. Bob Dylan it was who won the Nobel prize for Literature for the sheer poetry of his songs and this is as it should be because what are songs if they are not poetry set to music? Apart from being poets, these musicians were also great instrumentalists coaxing beautiful sounds from their instruments with which they developed a familiarity reserved for parts of their body. They were not born with the virtuosity we have come to associate with them but learnt how to play them and then developed a familiarity with them through long bouts of assiduous practice. These men were however not just players of their instruments but were creators, explorers of uncharted territories who had to make things up as they went along. They were also men of iron discipline who had to convince other men to submit to their demonstrable superiority in skill and determination to make something out of practically nothing.

Bobby Benson and Co were all innovators but the man who took highlife forward was Fela Ransome-Kuti who came back from his musical studies in England and put a band he called Koola Lobitos together. Highlife was fusion music at its best as it contained elements from jazz, calypso, samba, ball room music and indigenous music all rolled together to produce a giddy mixture of sound and emotions which captivated a large audience in Ghana and Nigeria. Fela extended that tradition but unlike the pioneers who incorporated the big band sound of jazz giants like Louis  Armstrong, Count Basie and Duke Ellington into their music the jazz content in Fela’s music was the atonal jazz genre of bee-bop made popular by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davies. You either liked it or you did not, which is why music lovers of the time were almost equally divided in their appreciation or the lack of it for the music being played by Fela and his Koola Lobitos. As we moved into the seventies however Fela had an epiphany and began to play a brand of music which he called Afrobeat because it was the sound of Africa produced by a band which for emphasis was called Africa ’70. This medium crossed all boundaries both physical and psychological and became truly international as it left the shores of Africa for other parts of the world. By the eighties Fela, now known as Anikulapo-Kuti was perhaps the best known Nigerian outside the country both for his music and his activism which was directed primarily against the Nigerian state with whom he had a lot of beef to settle. He also gained instant fame or notoriety in some quarters when he married twenty-seven wives in one day. Fela was a classically trained musician and in the early days of Koola Lobitos, all the members played from the sheet music in front of them on the band stand! This was a departure from the older exponents of highlife who were taught to play by ear. Like them however Fela was an instrumentalists par excellence who made great music from his trademark trumpet, the saxophone and the electric organ. As it has turned out, the most famous alumni of the Fela school are his own sons, Femi and Seun who are keeping a family tradition in music going strong.

Envoy to honour MohBad with Independence Day dinner in New York

The Consul General of Nigeria in New York, Ambassador Lot Egopija, has revealed that the late Nigerian rapper, Mohbad, would be honoured with an Independence Day event coming up on October 2.

Egopija made the revelation while urging Nigerians living in the U.S. to be hopeful about the future of the country and its leadership during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in New York as Nigerians at home and abroad commemorate the 63rd Independence Day Anniversary of the country.

The theme of the anniversary is “Nigeria@63, Renewed Hope for Unity and Prosperity.’’

Egopija said the Consulate would host a dinner on Monday, October 2, in collaboration with OAN after the flag-raising event.

“Also, many cultural groups will perform; Nigerians and Nigerian associations in America who want to showcase their culture and promote tourism in their respective ethnic groups are welcomed.

“Mayor Eric Adams has also agreed to participate with us to ensure the success of the festival and the parade.

“The parade will start at 2nd Avenue and East 54th Street and will proceed to East 44th and ends at Dag Hammarskjold Park where the festival will be held,” he said.

The envoy, however, urged every Nigerian to come for the celebrations, saying, “It is only in our celebration of Nigeria that we can come together and it is in togetherness that we can overcome our challenges.’’

The envoy said hope is alive and hope is being renewed, according to the president’s “Renewed Hope Agenda”.

Egopija, however, urged diasporas to follow the policies of the government and also contribute their quota to the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He told NAN that the Consulate General of Nigeria in New York had outlined some events to mark the anniversary, urging nationals within its jurisdiction to attend the events.

The events are Flag Raising, which will be held on Monday, Oct. 2, and the Independence Anniversary Parade and Festival, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The Consulate will hold the events in collaboration with the Nigeria Independence Day Committee and the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians.

“Judging from the mood of the nation, after the successful visit of Mr. President to the United Nations General Assembly, we will be having celebrations to commemorate our independence anniversary.

“It is significant because this year, for the first time, Nigeria’s flag will be hoisted at the Bowling Green Arena.

“This is possible because of Mayor Eric Adams’ friendly disposition to the Consular Corps. He has given the Consular Corps all the support so we have indicated interest that we want our national flags to be raised at Bowling Arena,’’ he said.

Egopija recalled that flag-raising events were done outside New York before now.

“If you recall before now, we do have our flag raising in other cities but not in New York. Nigeria’s flag will be hoisted at Bowling Green, incidentally, it is the site where the American National Flag was first hoisted.

”So, we are doing everything to ensure that Nigerians will participate, we have invited a couple of Nigerians who have excelled in their various positions.

“We’ve also invited Nigerian diaspora organisations within New York jurisdiction to come and witness the event.  The mayor himself will be there as a special guest and together, we will hoist the Nigeria flag.’’

  • The MohBad reality show

    The MohBad reality show

It’s been an interesting few weeks watching reactions to the untimely death of the singer MohBad – real name Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba. In life he was at best an up and coming afrobeat artiste; in death he has achieved the level of fame he desperately craved for.

In an outpouring of grief hundreds of youths held marches across the country demanding justice for the late singer based on the belief that there was foul play behind his demise.

Evidence to back this up was a string of videos and a further string of circumstantial stuff related to the singer Naira Marley, erstwhile head honcho of the crowd in which MohBad ran, and his sidekick – a certain Sam Larry.

In these parts nobody dies naturally, there’s always a villain to blame. In what is fast becoming a pattern on Nigerian social media, once the herd swings in one direction, heaven help you if have a different opinion or dare to ask questions.

So, all of a sudden, all manner of sympathisers were falling over themselves to be good to MohBad and his clan. Politicians were beating a bush path to the singer’s home to condole with the mourning. Among the distinguished mourners was a certain senator from the Northeast who was not long ago caught publicly bullying a shop girl. Here he was grandstanding to support a celebrated victim of bullying.

Nollywood actresses and sundry celebrities jumped on the bandwagon as though their lives depended on it. They descended on anyone who dared say anything that was less than laudatory. Their grieving was always public, always recorded to the posted on Instagram, X, Tik Tok or any other platforms that had a traffic count. Even when they went a shopping for a second coffin for coffin for MohBad, they made sure the tape was rolling.

They were not alone. Other sympathisers didn’t just stop at kind words. Their grieving was cash-backed. Millions have been donated to Mo’Bad’s son, wife, mother, father and so on. Naturally, these donations had to be publicised for the sake of posterity.

But of all the acts of the sympathisers, the one that took the biscuit was when one do-gooder offered the late singer’s young widow N10 million to cover the cost of a DNA test to prove that her child was truly fathered by MohBad.

Clearly, none of the cast of clowns seeking their own 15 minutes of attention in MohBad’s afterglow ever heard of quiet grieving, or of a family being left alone to mourn their dead. Sadly, their grief has become the latest poorly-scripted reality show.

  • Naira Marley: MohBad was suicidal before death

Naira Marley: MohBad was suicidal before death

Two weeks after the demise of a rising music star, formerly signed on Marlian Records, MohBad, a singer and the owner of the Marlian Records, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley has spoken on his relationship with the late ex-signee.

In an interview with a Nigerian author and social media influencer, Reno Omokri, on the micro-blogging site, X, Naira Marley opened up on his relationship with MohBad claiming he knew nothing about MohBad’s death.

The interview is coming hours after Naira Marley released a statement dissociating himself and his record label from the death of MohBad.

Emphasising that he had no hand in MohBad’s death either directly or indirectly, Naira Marley said, “I’ve been out of Nigeria from the 31st of August, I’ve been with my family. Until today, I haven’t been to Nigeria.

Two, he’s left Marlian Music since 2022 and we have not stopped him from dropping music or anything ever since. So when I heard about his death it was shocking to me. I was out of the country as well, so I had to find out what was wrong just as everybody was trying to find out what was wrong with him online.

“I’m seeing all the lies too, but we have to focus on the facts like who was he with? How did he die? If you’re blaming me, how did I kill him? I have nothing to do with his death. I was so hurt when I heard myself; I have nothing whatsoever to do with his death.”

Reacting to a viral video that saw Mohbad claiming Naira Marley should be held responsible if he died, the singer and father of two said, “Looking at the video again, I was getting information from everybody that was there during the incident trying to send someone to the NDLEA before I got back. The next day when I got back, they said Mohbad was not among the people. I didn’t have to bail Mohbad out when I got back anyway. It was only Zino and the rest that I had to bail out, Mohbad was already out.  Zino was still in with NDLEA at this time when he made that video, I wasn’t around I was outside Nigeria. When he made that video saying if he dies they hold Naira Marley and the Marlians responsible. When I got back, I met him and spoke to him to ask what was wrong and he said he didn’t understand and he apologised.”

Continuing, Naira Marley said MohBad was suicidal and he tried his best to help him get help despite the obvious that he had left his music label.

He began, “I have videos of me speaking to him and the only reason I have those videos again is because there was a time when I was in America his girl called me to say he locked himself in the toilet and he wanted to kill himself so I called him from there and I recorded the conversation. I’m like why do you wanna kill yourself? You’re a king, if the family is stressing you out (because this time he was with his family) just tell them to go, chill, do what you wanna do don’t kill yourself, if you kill yourself now what do you want people to say? You just made a video not long ago saying if you die they should hold Naira Marley, what do you want people to say?

“He locked himself in the room. This was after he made a video that I wanted to kill him and I was so concerned for him so I called him to just give him rest of mind.

“I was recording because he wanted to commit suicide. I had to look out for him. In the video, I was trying to find out what was wrong with him so I could be able to help but he said only his mom and dad understood what was wrong with him.

“Along the line in the video,  I said let me speak to your mom and dad if they don’t mind, he said okay, that’s when I went to his room, His mom and dad were in his room which is that video going round, they cut some part. I went to his room to speak to his parents to find out what’s wrong, they said they noticed he was not okay as well and they needed to take care of him. I said okay; just make sure you protect him. Don’t let him run out and start making noise in the middle of the night, don’t stress him out.”

Many Nigerians don’t want justice for Mohbad – Omokri

Former president Goodluck Jonathan’s aide, Reno Omokri, has argued that most Nigerians under the aegis of #JusticeforMohbad don’t actually want genuine justice but a mob action.

He maintained that they don’t want true justice which involves carrying out thorough investigations and punishing the ‘real’ culprits.

He maintained that their sole focus is on swiftly punishing specific individuals they dislike, already labeled as ‘guilty’ by the media, without allowing due inquiry by the authorities.

Sharing his perspective on the #JusticeforMohbad movement, Omokri expressed sympathy for the Nigeria Police Force.

He observed that, at this point, nothing they do would satisfy or resonate with these Nigerians, as their focus is already set on specific individuals they believe should be held accountable for the controversial death of the former Marlian signee.

He added that anything short of that, those demanding justice for Mohbad would contest the police findings and, accuse them of bias and bribery.

He tweeted: “Many Nigerians actually do not want #JusticeForMohBad. What they want is mob Justice against identified people they don’t like.

“To them, Justice For MohBad means that it just must be a certain person or persons.

“I am really feeling sorry for the @PoliceNG. If their report clears certain persons, some people will insist they have been bribed or otherwise compromised. They don’t want an investigation. They want an inquisition.”
