MohBad: I’m not a drug lord, cultist – Naira Marley

‘I am not a drug lord, neither do I belong to any cult or fraternity,’ singer Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley has stated.

He declared this in an official statement on his Instagram page where he also denied any involvement in singer MohBad’s death.

Marley and his bestie, Sam Larry have been in the eye of the storm following MohBad’s ‘tragic’ demise.

This followed clips that surfaced online after MohBad’s demise which captured him being harassed by Sam Larry and his former record label boss accused of assault.

In the statement, though Naira acknowledged he had a fallout with MohBad when he was alive, he noted he never wished him death.

He claimed the onslaught on his reputation and person was deliberate, that the culprit behind Mohbad’s death had a vendetta against him and was on a mission to set him up by fuelling public opinions to have him crucified.

He promised to return to the country soon to aid police investigation into his former signee’s demise while expressing confidence that the truth would prevail, the culprit found and he’d be exonerated.

The lengthy statement reads: “In the last few days, there has been a lot of onslaught on my person and reputation globally over the death of my former signee. All manner of stories has been woven against me in respect of his untimely death.

“I have not only been in shock over the death of the deceased whom I considered to be my brother and member of our music family, but over the various lies spread and threats against me.

“Before I progress further, let me say that as it is traumatic for a lot of people to bear the reality of lleri’s death, so it is to me. May his gentle soul continue to rest in peace and may God grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

”Permit me to categorically state that I have no hand in the death of llerioluwa, either directly or indirectly. It is not unusual in the industry, just like in several other industries to have family friction, even amongst blood relatives.

“Truly, we had our own share of misunderstandings whilst working together, but the disagreement between us was never to the extent being painted by some hirelings. It never degenerated to the extent of wishing each other death. Even at that, we were resolving our business disputes legally before he had passed.

“I have chosen not to say anything since due to being distraught over his death and in order not to jeopardize the investigation being carried out by the government agencies.

“In addition, I have been out of the country since the 31st of August, 2023 and I’m yet to return. In light of the police invitation, I am making arrangements to return to the country to assist the investigation and give my version of the events. I am fully cooperating with the Police team and I certainly have no reason to be a fugitive when I have no hand in his death.

”I am certain that the culprit behind his death and has a vendetta against me and are fueling public opinions to have me lynched for reasons known to them. In due time the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death will be unveiled and the world will know the truth.

“This kind of scenario of attempting to set someone up is not novel in the industry as other great musicians have experienced the same and came out better and stronger. Mine will not be an exception as I am innocent of the accusations.

”Mohbad left the label in September 2022, the label accepted his departure. Marlian Music did not stop or interfere with his career or releases since and he has been with oneRPM. Legal efforts were made to reconcile his concerns regarding the work we had done together.

  • Mohbad, a star born after death

Mohbad, a star born after death

Sir: The death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, a singer, rapper, songwriter, and performing artist, has been widely acknowledged globally by his past fans, his many posthumous fans, and even sympathetic individuals who emerged after his death. Mohbad’s music career came into the limelight a few years after he released numerous freestyles on various social media platforms, particularly his freestyle of Kizz Daniel’s song, which contributed to his fame. Mohbad signed with Naira Marley’s record label and made his debut during the Marlian feast held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, Nigeria, on December 31, 2019. Nevertheless, Aloba left the label in 2022, citing several grievances, including unpaid royalties during his three-year tenure with the label.

Although not much is known about Mohbad before his demise, many describe him as a calm person. Aloba’s deep baritone and moving lyrics also defined him as a cool and unique artist. While we cannot establish the threats he faced in his lifetime, many of his lyrics have hinted at the difficult ordeals he may have endured in the Nigerian music industry.

His sudden departure has also exposed numerous unpleasant issues that had long been swept under the carpet in the Nigerian music scene. When Mohbad was alive, struggling to establish himself in the country’s music scene, he often went unnoticed, considered by many as a nobody. He faced ridicule, attacks, underestimation, and ignorance from both society and the music industry.

Some of his lyrics, especially in ÌmÍl¹, reveal Mohbad’s possible experiences of overwhelming situations in the industry. Despite the realities he encoded in his lyrics, he was convinced that he was a light amidst his challenging times. He offered heartfelt prayers for himself, his fans, family, and all those going through tough moments, praying to God with these words: “Cold drink for the thirsty, food for the hungry, additional strength for the lazy, payday for all my “Niggas” who hustle; shine your light on me so the world can see the glory… I am the light and I want to shine across the world”.

Even now, Mohbad has been trending daily for the past 14 days since his death. His demise continues to make headlines, with fans and celebrities worldwide demanding a thorough investigation into the true cause of his passing. His songs continue to dominate major streaming platforms, and there have been ongoing protests worldwide for justice, as well as candlelight processions in his honour. A star born after death—perhaps Imole will live forever.

Perhaps what he prayed for, God has fulfilled, even though he is no longer with us on Earth. Aloba may no longer anticipate hope from God in this world, but perhaps Ilerioluwa’s story is not finished in eternity. Maybe he earnestly desired to be the light in the dark music industry, wishing for God’s light to shine upon him so the world could see his glory. Now, he has become a light that cannot be hidden in our time. Will Imolenisation live forever? Maybe?

Mohbad has now become a metaphor for life in Nigeria, where true freedom remains elusive. You must compromise; you must submit to others; you cannot go it alone. This is precisely what prevails in many places in Nigeria. Who will save us? From where will help come? Society could not protect Mohbad, which is why many youths continue to die needlessly, especially in their prime, while society looks on. Now it becomes clear to me why so many youths came out en masse to demand justice. It signifies solidarity among each of us, all with bright futures, but some less fortunate than others. It is now, by far, a cry for justice, peace and fairness not just for Mohbad but for our nation as a whole. After all, it could have been any one of them, even me. We have longed for justice and peace in this terrain of pain called Nigeria, when will it reign as we often sing in our national anthem? May the death of Mohbad make a difference.

  • MohBad: 20 things to know about DNA test

MohBad: 20 things to know about DNA test

Some Nigerians have demanded for DNA test to prove the paternity of the five-month-old son of late singer MohBad

A businessman, Larry Omodia, urged Mohbad’s wife to conduct a DNA test on her son to confirm his paternity.

He pledged to provide N10 million to support the singer’s widow for an ‘all-expense paid’ DNA test if she agreed.

This, he believed, would put paid to all accusations being leveled against Omowunmi regarding her hubby’s demise and utterly launder her image.

A DNA paternity test is considered the gold standard by the scientific and legal communities when it comes to accurately establishing a relationship between a possible father and a child

Below are 20 things you should know about DNA test:

A DNA paternity test compares a DNA sample from an alleged father and a DNA sample from a child (minor or adult) to determine whether the two individuals are likely to share or not share a father/child biological relationship. With the exception of any mutations which are taken into account by geneticists when determining probability of paternity, the man being tested must match the child’s data at every marker tested in order to be considered the biological father.

A biological child shares 50% of their DNA with the biological father and 50% with the biological mother.

All that’s needed to perform a DNA paternity test is a DNA sample from the possible father, child in question, and mother of the child (her participation is optional, but recommended).

There are two parts to all paternity tests: Collecting the DNA from test participants, and then testing and analysis of the samples at the laboratory.

DNA for paternity tests comes from participants’ cheek cells, which is collected using a simple, painless swab.

Each participant is provided four swabs; using one at a time, the tip of the swab is rubbed firmly on the insides of the cheeks to collect DNA. An adult can swab a child or infant

Swabs are then placed in paper envelopes. Paper containers allow the organic material on the swabs to “breathe” and prevent mold contamination as they travel to the laboratory.

In some rare postnatal cases, a blood sample may still be used for DNA, but cheek swabs are now the norm.

NOTE: The DNA collected from a swab is every bit as reliable as the DNA in blood.

At the laboratory, DNA is extracted from the cells of each participant, and then amplified to make the sample more workable

At least 16 STR genetic markers for each participant are analysed, using a method called Short Tandem Repeat (STR) Analysis, to capture the genetic information for each marker.

A geneticist takes this data and uses a calculation to determine the probability that the man tested is the biological father of the child tested.

DNA test results could take from one to two business working days. Although same-day results are possible but come at an extra cost.

In order for results of a paternity test to be court-admissible, DNA collection and submission to the laboratory needs to be supervised by an approved disinterested third party.

    Interpretation of paternity test results require laboratories to use specific legal terms. If a man is considered the biological father, the following would be contained in the report;

A conclusion statement that says, ‘the alleged father is not excluded as the biological father of the tested child. This means he can’t be statistically ruled out and is considered to be the biological father of the child’.

A Combined Paternity Index (CPI), which is the odds that the man is the father of the child. For example, a CPI of 43,110,000 means there is a 43,110,000 to 1 chance that someone other than the man who was tested is the biological father instead

A Probability of Paternity, which is the chance given as a percentage that the man is the father. It’s generally 99.9% or higher, which would read: There is a 99.9% chance that this man is the biological father of the child.

If a man isn’t considered the biological father, the report will contain the following:

A conclusion statement that says ‘the alleged father is excluded as the biological father of the tested child. This means he is not considered the biological father’.

A Combined Paternity Index (CPI), which is the odds that the man is the father of the child. For an exclusion this number is always 0

A Probability of Paternity, which is the chance given as a percentage that the man is the father. For an exclusion, this number is always 0.
