Reps mourn Mohbad, urges NCC to address copyright infringement issues

The House of Representatives has mourned the late musician, Ilerioluwa Olademeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, who died under controversial circumstances on September 12 at the age of 27.

The House resolved to gather information regarding the circumstances leading to his demise as well as monitor the ongoing investigation of Mohbad’s death, particularly the allegations of harassment and unpaid royalties.

It invited the Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) to put measures in place immediately to protect the rights of Mohbad’s songs and lyrics, addressing copyright infringements and ensuring the proper management of his musical assets while securing his son’s benefits from his musical legacy.

The House also resolved to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including record labels, artists, legal experts, and industry associations, to develop and implement industry-wide guidelines that ensure fair treatment, transparent contractual agreements, and proper compensation for artists, reviewing existing copyright and contract laws in Nigeria, identifying gaps or areas in need of reform.

The House mandated the Committee on Justice and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.

These resolutions followed the adoption of a motion titled, “Motion on the Need for Justice, Safeguarding the Legacy of Late Ilerioluwa Olademeji Aloba A.K.A Mohbad, and Protecting the Rights of Young Promising Artists in Contracts with Their Record Labels”, moved by Hon Babajimi Benson.

The House noted that Mohbad left his record label, Marlian Records, owned by Azeez Fashola (Naira Marley), in 2022, citing various grievances, including unpaid royalties.

This issue, it said, is indicative of a broader problem in which artists encounter challenges asserting their rights.

The motion reads: “The House is aware that a disturbing industry practice has come to the fore. Evidence of mistreatment highlights the struggles of young artists who, in their quest for success, become entangled in parasitic contracts and face bullying when they seek to exit these agreements.

“The House is also concerned that Mohbad’s case is not an isolated incident. Many artists in Nigeria find themselves ensnared in unfavourable contractual agreements, limiting their creative freedom and financial growth. This situation can lead to disputes and, at times, even violence.

“The House is cognizant that the Nigerian music industry lacks substantial institutional funding, pushing many artists into unscrupulous contracts with record labels. Addressing this issue is vital for the industry’s growth and sustainability.

“The House is also cognizant that Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) functions encompass copyright registration, law enforcement, education, royalty management, international collaboration, legal advocacy, and policy development, hence should be protecting copyright and promoting artists’ interests in Nigeria.

“The House disturbed that most of the proceeds of the late artist are still going to the Marlian Music Group, and there have been no moves from any agency to protect the Estate of the late singer who is currently the 46th best-selling digital artiste in the world.”

Tonto Dikeh tackles Bakare over ‘loose’ comment on MohBad’s demise

Actress-turned-politician Tonto Dikeh has condemned the ‘loose’ remark of the Senior Pastor of the Citadel Global Community Church, formerly known as the Latter Rain Church, Tunde Bakare regarding singer MohBad’s demise.

While addressing his congregation on Sunday on the topic; ‘Harvest’, Bakare said Mohbad reaped the reward of his association with evil men which led him to be ‘cut down so soon at the prime of youth’.

The cleric also inquired from his congregation ‘Moh bad’ which loosely translates in Yoruba as ‘I am bad’ was a good name for anyone to bear.

Reacting to Bakare’s declaration, Dikeh in an Instagram post, suggested he was a hypocrite who maintained silence when his colleagues were being exposed for ‘unholy sexual activities’ but suddenly developed a voice over the death of a boy, pronouncing ‘he reaped the reward of his actions’.

The humanitarian further noted she was being tactful with her call out because of the anointing on the cleric else she would have ‘gone off’ on him over his ‘loose comment’.

She wrote: “Dear Tunde: When your colleagues are caught with their pants down in unholy sexual activities, we never hear your voice, you never speak nor preach about them.

“It comes to the death of a boy who is old enough to be your last born, and you say ‘HE REAPED THE REWARD OF HIS ACTIONS.’ What Actions?

“Please, please, please KEEP THE SAME ENERGY with your corrupted colleagues as you just did today. It’s the anointing of God upon your head that’s making me not go off on this LOOSE COMMENT OF YOURS.

“I have learned over the years that if you have nothing nice to say, keep mute (DON’T TALK AT ALL). Preach your gospel and leave MohBad’s name out of your ministration.

“I don’t respect old age; I respect the wisdom you exhibit at old age”.

    Death and resurrection of Mohbad

    • By Usman Issa

She fought but lost the battle along the line. He voiced out but his voice could not be heard by colleagues. We all gathered to post Rest in Peace. We all could have done better to raise our voices against tormentors. He is dead but the light is on. No excuse, we are all hypocrites.

The above paragraph was my first reaction to Mohbad’s death pointing accusing fingers at all of us, sudden mourners who could have ordinarily prevented many brutal attacks and threats against his personality while he was alive. The massive video footage that flooded the media after his death described the debilitating and attenuating status of his existence. He lived in fear and always seemed to be dread of his former record label.

The death of Mohad has further exposed the hypocritical level of human nature. The dead in most instances faces rejection and most times gets exposed to mockery and reproach from friends, families, and colleagues, and witnesses unprecedented celebration after demise; this is the exact scenario of Mohbad’s public sympathy and echoes of Justice all over the world.

The major background of Mohbad’s problem is the family. His first agent of socialization was wobbled and disjointed and affected his subsequent decision to secure a better life for himself, and probably, his family. Mohbad’s family issue is obvious in one of his lyrics, titled ‘Sorry’ where he referenced the situation of his broken home and poor parental upbringing.

    He sang:

“This kind life e tire me

    Daddy no get salary

Ten years I no see Mummy

    Stepmother no care

    Landlord e dey worry

    My brothers are hungry

Daddy gather money make I go poly

I go poly but I no go class

    Daddy, I am sorry”

The above lines are a metaphorical picture of his family’s predicament which is liable to push him to take a step further. A step further from this confine led him to the Marlian music.

Going further with his lyrics, the subsequent lines depict the steps he took further to join the bandwagon of Yahoo, drug lords, and cult cliques. He depicts this by saying:

“ I don dey do Yahoo

    I don dey chop banku

    Omo pastor ti wonu aye”

Mohbad said at the end of the lyrics that,

    “Mummy just dey pray

Daddy just dey pray for me

    Make e better for me

    Me I no go school

    The  thing I fit do

    Music me I choose”

While the end of his verse explains the prayers being said by his parents, it equally shows the parents were praying after he had already joined the wrong caucus.

Obviously, the parental failure contributed to his ordeal and that’s exactly what is affecting many who are victims of hard drug cliques, robbery gangs, cult groups, and other social vices. Broken homes always tell on the children in negative. Family is the first agent of socialization, if a family fails, it endangers the lives of the children and that’s why the children matter in all decisions to go on separate ways with a spouse.

Going back and forth, Mohbad’ is gone and still alive. This reminds me of the Indian thriller movie, Bahuballi who died as a result of conspiracy from his family and resurrected through his son who avenged the injustice meted to his parents.

Like Bahuballi, Mohbad is survived by a son, Liam Imole. Mohbad’s light is on and the light should be guided. The Justice for Mohbad movement should be more focused on his son. That’s where his parent’s happiness lies and that’s the most important thing.

Let Mohbad’s spirit continue to rest in the Lord. He has resurrected by giving the world the lights, Liam Imole. Rest on Legend…the whole world pays tribute.

Mohbad: Man promises late singer’s wife N10m for DNA test

A Nigerian man, Larry Omodia, has urged the late singer Mohbad’s wife to conduct a DNA test on her son to confirm his paternity.

Omodia, the CEO of African Television, pledged to provide an amount of N10 million to support Mohbad’s widow for an ‘all-expense paid’ DNA test if she agreed.

He expressed the view that a DNA test was necessary considering the numerous controversies surrounding Mohbad’s passing.

He asserted that a leaked conversation between Mohbad and Omowunmi during a heated argument made her a prime suspect.

In the leaked clip, the ‘Peace’ singer levelled serious allegations against his wife, including conspiracy, and swore that she would be held accountable if anything unfortunate were to happen to him.

Omodia said Omowunmi’s acceptance for a paternity test to be done on her son would put paid to every traumatic accusation being levelled against her and most importantly clear her name.

He said: “N10 million to Mohbad’s wife if DNA proves that that child belongs to Mohbad. African television will pay for the DNA test, raise N10 million for Mohbad’s wife to raise that child if the DNA proves that that child is actually Mohbad’s child.

“This is to counter those people who say, ‘If you talk about DNA, they will sue you for N3 million. Let them come after me. My name is Larry Omodia. I’m the CEO of African Television.

“I’m going to sponsor the DNA test and make sure that the baby gets N10 million if he’s proven to be Mohbad’s child. Why? Because accusation is traumatic. But what is more traumatic than accusation? A life of lies.

“So we would compensate Mohbad’s wife if the baby actually belongs to Mohbad. But if that baby isn’t for Mohbad, men will learn a lot of lessons from that.

“So, this message is to Mohbad’s family, get me that woman, get the baby; we’ll do a DNA test. If the woman has nothing to hide, she walks away with N10 million; that is a promise. And if you want to sue people for what is right, come after me.

“We are tired of women sending our boys to jail, killing our boys, lying against our men. Do you know how many men are in their graves because of a woman? Kings have been buried by women. Future presidents have been put in jail by women.

“It is time that we said, ‘No to slutty women’. And I’m not saying Mohbad’s wife or girlfriend is bad but we want to clear her name. We want to clear her name if she’s innocent.

“Listen to the audio conversation between her and Mohbad, that audio conversation makes her the first suspect. You guys are going after Naira Marley, Sam Larry, all kinds of people but listen to that audio conversation.

“Yes, what happened between Naira Marley, Sam Larry, they’re all criminals; those actions were wrong. But in the case of murder, the primary suspect in my opinion is the wife because the audio conversation, from Mohbad’s conversation with her makes her a prime suspect. And the only way we can clear her name is by proper investigation. So, we’re offering N10 million for her to clear her name in this case.”

This comes in the wake of a stern warning issued by Mohbad’s sister-in-law to social media sensation, VeryDarkBalckMan after he requested DNA be done for the 27-year-old rapper’s son, Liam.

She threatened the Instagram activist with an N300 million lawsuit for defamation of character if he persisted with his DNA request.
