Moses excited with first West Ham training

Super Eagles winger Victor Moses appears to have gotten his groove back after taking part in the first West Ham training on Monday.  Moses, who was not part of  coach Sunday Oliseh’s squad that settled for a goalless draw against Tanzania on Saturday, left no one in doubt that he is in a happy mood after taking to twitter to tell whoever cares to listen that West Ham’s training on Monday was a delight.

“Great first training session with the lads today” he said.

Early this month Chelsea handed the Nigerian international and former Wigan Athletic ace a new four year deal that will see him remain by implication at the Bridge  till 2019, but promptly loaned him out to an excited West Ham that is seeking to make a huge impact in the new premiership season.

Moses, who some have described as a loan specialist spent last term on loan at Stoke City and the season before with Liverpool. Interestingly, Moses made 19 appearances each for Stoke and Liverpool respectively, scoring one goal for Liverpool and three goals for Stoke City.  At the home front the fleet-footed winger has so far made 24 appearances for the senior national team with seven goals to his credit.

Should the 25-year-old regain his super form with West Ham, strong indications abound that he might be part of the next Super Eagles match in the Afcon 2017 qualifiers against Pharaohs of Egypt in March, 2016

    Moses given 9mins run out

Victor Moses laboured with the rest of his Chelsea teammates as they were humbled 1-0 by Arsenal in the Community Shield match played at the famous Wembley stadium to hand Arsene Wenger a first win over Jose Mourinho in fourteen meetings.

The former Wigan was sent on loan to Stoke last season and after a fine preseason back at Stamford Bridge he was handed the number 20 jersey but was only good enough to start from the bench against the Gunners.

However, it was the North Londoners that had smiles on their faces as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain finished brilliantly after receiving a pass from Theo Walcott and walked pass Cesar Azpilicueta on 24 minutes to hand Arsenal a 1-0 lead.

Chelsea controlled major parts of the second half and with nine minutes left on the clock Blues manager Jose Mourinho replaced Captain John Terry with Nigeria star Moses as they searched for an equalizer but the Gunners held on for a precious win.

Moses Super Eagles teammate Mikel Obi was an unused substitute for Chelsea while Arsenal’s Nigerian youngster Alex Iwobi also sat on the bench for 90minutes.

    Moses scores again

For the second straight pre – season game, Chelsea ran out winners on penalties against Barcelona after normal time ended 2 – 2 in Washington DC.

As per team news, there was no place in the starting XI for the four Nigerian players that travelled with the squad to North America, however, Mikel and Moses were introduced on the hour mark, replacing Matic and Fabregas respectively.

Moses was a handful for the Barcelona defenders, with several runs and crosses from the left wing but his offensive partners Remy and Willian failed to convert.

The winger capped off a fine performance by scoring from the spot to give Chelsea a 2 – 1 lead after Barcelona’s Halilovic had missed while attempting a panenka.

Both Mikel and Moses have featured in all three games played by Chelsea in the pre – season so far.

Moses scores as Chelsea beat PSG

Nigerian winger, Victor Moses, scored for Chelsea in Saturday’s victory over PSG as the Blues intensified preparations for the 2015/16 season.

Moses, who has been in blistering form in Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States, netted in exemplary fashion in the 65th minute at the Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte.

It was the Blues’ second game at the International Champions Cup and the French club was put to the sword by the English champions, 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Moses’ goal was down to anticipation, inch-perfect precision and cold-bloodedness in front of goal.

The 24-year-old’s brilliant run off the ball was expertly picked up by Cesc Fabregas and his subsequent close-range volley was crisp and clinical as the Blues levelled following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener on 23 minutes.

Moses was substituted after 70 minutes but he did enough to be selected as man of the match.

The former Wigan Athletic man now looks almost certain to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s plans after spending the last two seasons on loan at Liverpool and Stoke City.

  • PRE-SEASON TOUR: Moses, Mikel hit Canada

Four Nigerians John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Dominic Solanke,  and Ola Aina were part of Chelsea’s contingent to Canada in continuation of the Premier League champions pre-season tour.  The team was seen boarding a plane Wednesday afternoon with midfielder

Mikel Obi bidding goodbye to anyone who cares to notice.  Mikel’s position in the team in recent time has been neither here nor there with suitors coming to seek the services of the 28-year old whose playing time at the Stamford Bridge continues to reduce by the day.  The Blues plan to use Montreal as their training base for the next two weeks as Manager Mourinho shapes the team ahead of the new season with three international Champions Cup fixtures against New York Red Bulls , Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

‘Pre-season, here we come!’ wrote Captain Terry as the squad, along with boss Mourinho posed for a photograph before leaving for Canada.

Victor Moses who spent last season on loan at Stoke will be hoping to prove his worth and fights for a place when the season begins.

The Blues will travel to New Jersey to face the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, July 22 at their 25,000-seater home stadium before a clash against PSG in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, July 25.

Mourinho’s side will then head to Washington D.C. to take on Champions League winners Barcelona on Tuesday, July 28.

  • Omeruo, Moses not wanted at Chelsea

Omeruo, Moses not wanted at Chelsea

       • Classified as second string players

Nigerian international duo of Kenneth Omeruo and Victor Moses would be playing away from Stamford Bridge next season if the news coming from the London club is anything to go by.

Omeruo was among the 31 returning loanees at the club’s training ground, Cobham, on Monday after a loan spell at various different clubs last season.

According to reports in the English Press yesterday, Chelsea will place Omeruo, Moses and 29 other loanees in a special ‘loan squad’ for pre-season, away from the main group as they look to find new clubs.

It was gathered from the club’s training camp that Eddie Newton, technical coach of Chelsea’s youth development programme and assistant Paulo Ferreira, will lead a squad comprising of players not wanted by Jose Mourinho’s touring first-team selection.

Mourinho is back at work this week to begin preparations for Chelsea’s Barclays Premier League title defence. One of his first jobs before the first team depart for their pre-season tour next week is working out who to take to the United States.

Chelsea’s list of retained players released last month, revealed that 72 were still contracted to the Stamford Bridge side, the largest roster of any English club.

“We would have loved to have all the players back because we still see them as part of the club,’ Newton said about the pre-season group. ‘Sometimes it’s not possible because the deal’s been made with another club so therefore, best case scenario, they go to their new club.

‘Then Jose will take some on tour with him, it’s their chance to impress the manager and make sure that he understands why they are there.

‘Then the other scenario is that they come with me and Paulo and they come for pre-season as a group and we put them through their paces and slowly but surely they start dripping, falling out, because obviously the deal has been made and therefore, they go to their new club on loan.’

  • Stoke to pay N1.3bn for Moses

Stoke to pay N1.3bn for Moses

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is keen to sign Nigeria winger Victor Moses on a permanent basis in the summer despite his latest injury which has seen him return to Chelsea for treatment.

The 24-year-old Nigeria international whose value is £5million (N1.3 billion) is down with injury for the third time since he joined ‘The Potters’ on loan from Chelsea.

Moses has only played 19 league games on his season-long loan from Stamford Bridge having missed games with thigh and leg injuries. But Hughes is set to press ahead with plans to sign him for £5million in the summer anyway.

“Because he is an explosive player, the hamstring is always a danger and so he will always be a bit susceptible to those kind of injuries,” said Hughes.

“But that won’t affect my thinking on other decisions we make with Victor. He has done well for us this season, but he is a Chelsea player and so they decide on the timing of talks. We will get him back fit and well. He did have a problem with his thigh and they are a notorious injury, but he’s had no re-occurrence of that.”

It is understood Moses sees his future career away from Stamford Bridge after a lack of games since signing from Wigan in 2012.

  • Like Moses, like Mikel

    Like Moses, like Mikel

It wasn’t shocking that victor Moses rejected a return to Chelsea last January. Moses reckoned that Jose Mourinho’s request for him to return to Stamford Bridge was poisoned chalice.

Why? Moses would rather be a hero at Stoke than to play second fiddle to anyone. The Nigerian would rather the head of the goat that is visible than the tail of the elephant, most times hidden between its legs. Moses wants to play regularly, having enjoyed rave reviews at Stoke.

Until Moses limped out of Stoke’s game penultimate Saturday, he cherished reading the local English papers and seeing his pictures celebrating goals scored – a rarity when he was at Chelsea. Moses’ goals while playing for Chelsea are as far and wide apart like the dentition of an octogenarian, no thanks to the fact that he hardly played regularly at Chelsea. At Stoke, he is the pivot of the team’s attack whenever he is fit.

Moses knows that Chelsea’s pay is almost four times bigger than what he earns at Stoke. He must have computed what he earns at Stoke with the match bonuses for games won and drawn. Moses’ evaluation should have shown that it paid him more to remain at the Britannia Stadium than being a spectator at Stamford Bridge.

Moses knows now that his meteoric performance at Stoke is not lost on many European teams, who would secretly be nursing the desire to sign him on when the European transfer season opens in August. Chelsea’s manager must have been hurt by Moses’ bluff. But the Nigerian knows his onions and wants to move on at his terms. Moses wanted to sign for a club that values him, not one which thinks that it is doing him a favour, like with the Blues.

Moses has dual nationality. He can be tagged a European even though he plays for Nigeria, the land of his birth. So, all he needs do is excel for a small club, such as Stoke, and expect bigger teams to do seek his services.

Moses’ story is deliberate. Why? It has a correlation with John Mikel Obi’s fate at Chelsea. Until recently, Mikel’s inclusion at Chelsea was on the foreigner slot. Today, Mikel is tagged a European, having satisfied the requirements for a dual citizenship.

Many have asked what Mikel is still doing at Chelsea. Seasonally, Mikel gets listed among likely players to leave the team. But, he remains for tenable reasons. Mikel has stayed this long in London with Chelsea because he wants the European status. Being European means his movement won’t be scuttled by the new FIFA clause on number of foreign stars in a team. Mikel attained the European status this year. But can Mikel dump Chelsea? Or would he prefer Chelsea to dispense of his services? How many more playing years does Mikel have? Or does Mikel want to leave Chelsea on free transfer?

One thing is clear about Mikel’s career. He appears to be satisfied with being a one-club player. He likes Chelsea to the marrow. But if he must command respect, he needs to join another team next season. If he so loves England, he could seek employment in many English teams who would scamper to get him to strengthen their midfield. Mikel must understand that the Frank Lampard scenario awaits him, if he fails to take the plunge for the better next year.

If he moves next season, he could be listed among the three senior players in Nigeria’s Olympic Games squad. Mikel hasn’t played at the Olympics. He missed the Beijing 2008 edition due to his loyalty to Chelsea. Otherwise, he would have been a silver medalist today, although many aficionados argue that had Mikel been with the Nigerian team in Beijing, they would have won the gold medal, like this country did in Atlanta in 1996.

Mikel has won lots of laurels at Chelsea- the UEFA Champions League, Europa Cup, Barclays English Premier League and the Capital One Cup. He is also a gold medalist at the Africa Cup of Nations. Mikel is easily the most decorated Nigerian player.

He needs to move forward like Sunday Oliseh did in his playing days. He should shake hands with Mourinho and head for any European team with continental ambitions. Playing second fiddle to younger players at Chelsea would be an irony of sort for Mikel, who broke into the team as a kid. Mikel has a very reliable manager in John Ola Shittu.  He needs to whisper into Shittu’s ears that he wants to call it a day at Chelsea next year instead of waiting to be transfer-listed at the Blues. If Mikel waits until he is transfer-listed, then he should know that he would be having two options- quit the game for good or play in the lesser leagues, like Yakubu Aiyegbeni is doing at Reading FC in England.

    Dolphins’ agony

It is pertinent that we stop the buck passing over the shameful walkover of Dolphins FC of Port-Harcourt in Tunisia. If we don’t, we will spend the next one year on the matter while the culprits walk away to another club and repeat the same offence.

Dolphins FC folks are no new comers to participating in the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF’s) inter-club competitions. They know the rule, especially as it concerns travelling arrangements. Customarily, clubs send advance parties to the away grounds where they have a game.

The essence of this advance party most times is to inspect the accommodation provided by the hosts to see if it is suitable. Sadly, most African nations employ all the tricks in the book to destablise their visitors right from their arrival at the airports. They either keep their visitors in hotels far away from the stadium or not make suitable arrangements for them to leave the airport. But if there is an advance party, they would liaise with the Nigerian embassy officials in such countries and make their own plan for a seamless exit from the airport on arrival.

Some unscrupulous club chiefs deliberately book their visitors in red light zones just to distract the players and officials. Several instances abound where Nigerian teams have rejected the hotels booked for them for other suitable arrangements.

Sadly, such continental assignments disunite Nigerian teams, with officials divided into many groups. In such circumstances, everyone leaves the arrangement till the last minute so that a task that would ordinarily cost N100,000 would cost N1.5 million. Such panic setting is for club officials, time to “chop and I chop.” This cartel isn’t interested in the outcome of the game but what they stand to gain for as long as the team is still in the competition.

But it is pertinent to ask the players why they embarked on the strike with just 48 hours to the game? It is true that they wanted to hold their officials by the throat, knowing that that was the only way they could get their outstanding entitlements.

The players ought to have resigned when they knew they couldn’t continue with the club. It is foolhardy for the players to now plead for forgiveness after throwing away the opportunity to showcase our soccer in North Africa. My candid advice to the Rivers State Government is to ensure that the ring leaders in the “show of shame” are sacked and reported to the NFF for further sanctions. This idea of players holding us hostage over their entitlements should stop. I feel that the government cast an indulgent eye on the matter when Sharks FC and Dolphins’ players and officials slept at the Brick House in Port Harcourt.

    Fight of the Century

I’ve enjoyed the build-up to the Fight of the Century between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao at the famous MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 2. The two boxers are known. For the records, the expected revenue from the fight is over $400 million.

Sky won the right to show the $300m (£200m) mega-fight in UK. HBO and Showtime will show the fight on pay-per-view in the US. Pay-per-view price is £20.The price for the fight has been set at £19.95 until midnight of Friday May 1. The cost will remain the same for those paying via remote control or online, but will be £24.95, if booked via phone after Friday. Ticket sale is expected to raise $74, almost four times the record.

This is the way big fights are arranged. Nothing is left to chance. Indeed, boxing experts are sharply divided over the outcome of the bout. The Fight of the Century is a box office hit. The deal has been struck by renowned agents. Each boxer knows his prize money. Nither of the boxers is heading for his country’s President for moral or financial support.

The boxers have gone back to their gyms to prepare for the fight. They are focused on perfecting their tactics. They are not the boxer, marketer, and organiser of the event like we have in Nigeria. There is division of labour about every aspect of the fight, leaving the boxers and their corners cracking their heads for the opponent’s flaws and strength.

So, those who want to organise boxing fights in Nigeria under any kind of nomenclature must be well guided. No rascality is needed. There are set rules. Which still-born fight in Nigeria is this writer writing about? No prize for guessing right, dear reader.

  • Moses trains again

    Moses trains again

VICTOR Moses and new signing Philipp Wollscheid could both be in training when Stoke’s first-team squad reports back from a mini two-day break.

Moses has been out with a thigh injury since November 22 and was forced to return to parent club Chelsea for treatment.

“He’s ready to start training now, so we expect him to be in the training ground,” said assistant boss Mark Bowen.

“We will have to assess how far down the line he is as to whether he’s on the bench or starting games.

“We have come through a brutal period of games and done very well.

“But we have missed Victor and Peter Odemwingie, two key attacking players.”

Bowen, speaking on BBC Radio Stoke’s new sports show Wednesday, also disclosed that newcomer Wollscheid will also be stripped for action.

The 25-year-old centre half, who has played twice for Germany, has joined on loan from Bayer Leverkusen until the end of the season and with a view to a permanent move in the summer window.

“Philipp will be joining us tomorrow (today) morning for training,” said Bowen.

“We will have to assess his fitness, although he’s been playing fairly regularly (on loan) for Mainz.

“We expect him to be not far away from match fitness.

“He’s coming to a new group of players, so we will have to take a view on his progress and on his starting in our first team.”

He added that it made sense to move now instead of the summer once Wollscheid became available.

“It would be unwise not to pursue it, rather than think we are all right now and we’ll look at it in the summer.

“It was one we felt we couldn’t have dragged our heels over.”

Stoke 1-1 Man United Moses disappointed with draw

Victor Moses is currently out with a thigh injury but that hasn’t stopped him from supporting his teammates in their quest to have a successful Barclays Premier League campaign.

On New Year’s Day, Stoke welcomed Manchester United to the Britannia and after a pulsating 90 minutes it ended 1-1 to the disappointment of the Nigerian who felt the Potters were the better side.

Ryan Shawcross jabbed in from close range inside two minutes but Stoke were denied a famous win when Colombia International Radamel Falcao guided a cross from Michael Carrick past Asmir Begovic in goal for Stoke.

“The lads worked hard today and were unlucky not to get the win,” Moses tweeted.

The former Wigan winger who is currently on loan from Chelsea also used the opportunity to wish his teaming fans a great year.  “Happy New Year everyone,” he added.

Stoke are currently placed 11th on the league log with 26 points
