Obiano, Obi of Onitsha to woo investors

Obi of Onitsha Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe   will on Monday, October 3 deliver the Anambra State 25th Anniversary Lecture, entitled, “Think Nigeria, Invest in Anambra – Aku Luo Uno”.

The lecture, the Organising Committee of the Anambra at 25, headed by Anambra State Deputy Governor Dr. Nkem Okeke, disclosed, is to woo  Anambra indigenes and other people from the southeast geopolitical zone to invest in Anambra, in line with the blueprint of Governor Willie Obiano administration which encourages indigenous investors to take advantage of the vast investment opportunities in agriculture, industry, trade,  commerce and oil and gas sectors in the state.

Obiano had in 2015, established the Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA),  a one-stop service center that structures and facilitates business partnerships between the state and private investors.

This agency which has Chief Joe Billy Ekwunife,  as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer ( MD/CEO), provides information, support and guidance to prospective investors, implements aftercare strategy and also provides a project equity contribution in the form of land, other intangibles and basic infrastructure such as access roads, in order to ease the burden on investment in the state.

A number of indigenous investors, as documented in ANSIPPA brochure, have benefited from this arrangement. These include, Coscharis Farms limited, promoted by Dr. Cosmas Maduka, with investment of $120 million, Falcon Corporation Limited, which invested $ 100million, Joseph Agro Limited ($150million), Cardinal Developers ($98million), Richbon Nigeria Limited, with investment of $70million and several others.

The lecture will kick-off the second phase of the anniversary celebration which started with a world press conference addressed by Governor Obiano, on Friday, August 26, 2016, at the Government House, Awka.

This second phase of the four-month long anniversary celebration programme, according to the coordinator of the Anambra at 25 events, Chief Emeka Okonkwo, is fashioned to draw attention to the “rich tourism potentials of Anambra state, especially in this period of economic difficulty which calls for diversification and creativity in the revenue drive of the state”, in line with the desire of Obiano administration, to depend less on the monthly Federal Allocation from Abuja.

Okonkwo,  while addressing the traditional rulers of the 179 communities in Anambra State, at the Government House, Awka, Anambra State capital,   on behalf of the Organising Committee, said: “The Anambra @25 Committee wants to use this historic silver jubilee of our dear state to showcase not only  our rich cultural heritage, natural endowments but also our unique tourisms potentials.

“Tourism all over the world is a big business. Many countries around the globe derive huge revenue from tourism and Anambra with it’s diverse tourism endowments,  should rightly be on the front role of tourism sector in Nigeria if  the sector is well developed, essential as government has provided the enabling environment for it to thrive.

”We are grateful to the government of His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano, for the decisive manner it fought against criminality and insecurity in Anambra state in the past two years. Now with a secured Anambra, we will no longer be afraid to invite our brothers, sisters, friends and other tourism enthusiasts from within and outside the shores of Nigeria to come and have a feel of tourism in Anambra state,” adding that developing and harnessing the tourism potentials in Anambra will not only earn the state extra revenue but also stimulate economic activities in the regions that  host the numerous tourism sites in the state.

Okonkwo also disclosed that the anniversary celebration is at no cost to the state government as sponsorship cost is borne by private individuals and corporate bodies who are using the opportunity of the historic event to identify with Anambra State.

  • Obiano to lead Anambra carnival

    Obiano to lead Anambra carnival

Anambra State is still in a celebration mood several weeks after marking its 25th anniversary.

This second phase of the four-month long anniversary celebration programme, according to the coordinator of the Anambra at 25 events, Chief Emeka Okonkwo, is fashioned to draw attention to the “rich tourism potentials of Anambra State, especially in this period of economic difficulty which calls for diversification and creativity in the revenue drive of the state.”

Addressing the traditional rulers of the 179 communities in the state, at the Government House, Awka, Anambra state capital, Okonkwo solicited their support on behalf of the Organising Committee, for the remaining part of the anniversary programme.

He said, “The Anambra @ 25 Committee wants to use this historical silver jubilee of our dear state to showcase not only  our rich cultural heritage, natural endowments but also our unique tourisms potentials.

“Tourism all over the world is a big business. Many countries around the globe derive huge revenue from tourism and Anambra with its diverse tourism endowments,  should rightly be on the front role of tourism sector in Nigeria if  the sector is well developed, essential as government has provided the enabling environment for it to thrive.”

Speaking further, he said, “We are grateful to the government of His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano, for the decisive manner it fought against criminality and insecurity in Anambra state in the past two years.

Okonkwo also disclosed that the anniversary celebration is at no cost to the state government as sponsorship cost is borne by private individuals and corporate bodies who are using the opportunity of the historical event to identify with Anambra state.

Anambra, in the recent past was dreaded by visitors because of its notoriety for criminality. But Governor Obiano administration has taken on this ugly situation with an iron fist that Anambra has become one of the safest states in Nigeria today.

Speaking on how he turned that ugly trend around, Governor Obiano stated: “I figured out that there could be no meaningful progress in this state without a successful attack against crime. I knew that no investor would go to a crime-ridden environment. So, we launched an all-out war against kidnappers, armed robbers, drug dealers and child-traffickers.

“We smashed crime syndicates and pulled down the warehouses used for keeping kidnap victims. We donated smart cars to the police, gunboats to the navy and last Christmas, we launched police helicopters to watch over our skies.

“And so, for the first time since the creation of this great state, we made sure that Anambra was effectively covered on the land, in the waters and in the sky! With that effort, we achieved 360 degrees security coverage of the state, “he noted.

The result this efforts is the enabling environment for the development of the tourism sector that Okonkwo, alluded to.

According to the published programmes of event, this tourism drive will be kick-started by a cultural beauty pageant and zonal cultural dance/masquerade competitions billed to take place in each of the three senatorial zones in the vicinity of the key tourism sites in each of the zones.

Tourism sites such as Agulu Lake, famed for its sacred crocodiles and turtles, Ogbunike Cave, located in Oyi Local Government Area and Ogba Waterfalls in Owerre-Ezukala, will all play host to the zonal cultural fiestas. This strategy, according to the organizers, is to through this means, bring people to these sites in order to enable them to appreciate these gifts of nature that God has blessed Anambra with.

Six selected communities from each of the zones would then take part in the grand finale and the state carnival to be led personally by the governor in the state capital Awka, in December 17, 2016.

The cultural competition is designed to showcase the best of Anambra state cultural dances and indigenous masquerades.  The organisers also revealed that the carnival would become an annual state event like the popular Calabar Carnival, however, participants would be encouraged to wear customs that depict the culture and tradition of Anambra state, unlike in Calabar which parades Brazilian custom themes.

    •Governor introduces new policies

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has abolished the imposition of illegal levies in public primary and secondary schools.

Also, the state has suspended the sale of consolidated emblems, the collection of hawker’s permit on streets and the collection of wheel barrow tax in markets.

The governor said his administration took the action to reduce the impact of recession on households.

The decisions were contained in a special broadcast on the Economic Stimulus Package by the Obiano administration, which the governor announced yesterday at the Governor’s Lodge in Awka, the state capital.

Obiano said: “My role as your governor is to envisage challenges and provide solutions that will ensure a speedy comeback from difficult situations that require the power and might of a state government.

“This is what my administration has done in the past two years through ASBA, the Anambra Small Business Agency.

“This agency is a very important institution that I created to serve as a catalyst for our domestic economy. So far, ASBA has effectively distributed N1.5 billion as start-up capital to many small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) in Anambra State.

“These funds are part of the N2 billion the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made available to states about two years ago to stimulate local entrepreneurship across the country.

“ASBA was set up with a credible manpower and a strategic focus on the productive sectors.

“I must thank the CBN for demonstrating a great foresight with that credit scheme. I hope that when we knock on its door again soon, it shall be opened onto us since Anambra has managed the last drawdown well through ASBA.

“Although it may not be known to many people, the truth is that the famous Anambra rice owes its growth to our intervention through ASBA. So many other manufacturers have also benefitted from this initiative. Therefore, arising from the highly visible success recorded by ASBA, we shall carry out the following policies to provide relief to the productive sectors and stimulate the domestic economy.”

Those reliefs, according to the governor, were to provide ASBA with a minimum of N3 billion to lend to SMEs and MSMEs at nine per cent interest rate across key sectors.

Obiano said his administration would re-channel the Bank of Industry (BOI), Bank of Agriculture and Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme funds totalling about N1.5 billion to support the key sectors.

The governor added that ASBA would handle it, as usual, and follow the standard modalities.

He also announced the plannd roll-out of the CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme to support SME and MSMEs in the Agricultural sector.

Obiano’s aides are misguided, says PDP chief

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Justin Okafor, has said Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano’s aides are “misguided”.

The politician said he was reacting to a statement by Mr. Arinzechukwu Awogu, whom he described as the “13th of the 15 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) to Obiano on Politics”.

The governor’s aide allegedly wrote that the Igbo should ostracise former Governor Peter Obi for saying former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration gave the Igbo an identity.

The report was said to have been published in many newspapers.

In a statement yesterday, Okafor said: “As already reported in various newspapers, Obi merely called for unity among the Igbo and eulogised former President Jonathan, under whose government the Igbo rose to the highest peak in various arms of the military and who also equitably appointed Igbo into various positions they could not occupy under previous governments. He also remembered him for according Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu unparalleled care and burial thereafter.”

The PDP chief said the governor’s aide should have reported the news of joy during the presentation of an award by the congress to Obi for his exemplary governance in Anambra State and for his commitment to the progress of Igbo land and the ovation that greeted his speech.

He noted that former President Jonathan would have been given an award but for his absence.

On the state of the Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage way, which Obiano’s aide decried, Okafor said the head bridge at Upper-Iweka-Zik’s Roundabout – parts of Umunya – were worse before Obi rehabilitated them and got reimbursed.

Okafor said: “Even before he handed over, Obi also secured permission and was doing the Amansea-Amawbia Roundabout. If the spirit of continuity was followed, by now, the Anambra State Government would have completed the stretch of road with the money set aside by Obi and with reimbursement assured.”

On other achievements, Okafor said the Southeast was dear to Jonathan, who he said did a lot on erosion control, the upgrade of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, siting of federal establishments, including the Naval base at Odekpe, Onitsha, the commencement of the Second Niger Bridge, among others.

“Because of this, Obi expressed hope and indeed called on the congress to remain prayerful for   President Muhammadu Buhari to continue on the same line,” Okafor said.

    How Anambra avoided farmers/farmersby Obiano

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has explained how he staved off clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

Obiano spoke at a news conference to mark the state’s 25th anniversary in Awka at the weekend. The governor said he set up a strong security committee, which he mandated to ensure that both farmers and herdsmen did not take the law into their hands.

He said: “In May 2015, I set up a security committee to ensure that farmers and herdsmen keep the law.

“They (herdsmen) agreed that if they destroyed any farm in Anambra they will pay compensation. And they have paid 11 times…. If our people kill their cow we will pay compensation as well. And we have paid five times that happened.”

Obiano also spoke on the effort of his government to make Anambra State an agricultural hub, and on the prospects of the state in the next 25 years.

“Anambra State will be the food basket of Africa in the next 25 years,” he said.

“In the next 25 years Anambra will not depend on federal allocation. It will be known as a state that transited to become the Taiwan of Africa.

“We are No. 1 among states  created 25 years ago. We pay salaries as and when due. We are the safest state, and we have attracted billions of dollars in investment to the state.”

The state was created on August 27, 1991, and Saturday marked the 25th year of its creation.

A line of activities has been scheduled to celebrate the silver jubilee of the state.

A dinner was held yesterday, and other events have been scheduled to take place throughout the year to mark the occasion.

Obiano, Umeh, Maku woo Edo voters for APGA

Leaders of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) have told electorates in Edo State that their candidate for the September 10 governorship election, Mr. Osaro Onaiwu, is capable of continuing from where Governor Adams Oshiomhole will stop.

They said Onaiwu would replicate the developmental strides in Anambra State in Edo State.

Chieftains of APGA that stormed Edo State last weekend for the flagging-off campaign of the party included Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, former Minister of Information and Orientation, Labaran Maku, and former National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh

Obiano, in his remark, said Onaiwu will continue the good work Oshiomhole has done.

Obiano said the Oshiomole has done excellently well in developing the state, but that it was imperative there is continuation of the good work already started.

He promised that Onaiwu would continue and build on the legacies of the governor.

He said: “We are not here to criticize anybody. The  Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole has done well by developing the state but we need somebody that can continue from where he has stopped. “

Ngige, Obiano, others honoured in Anambra

A group, Anambra Consensus Project (ACP), has honoured the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige; Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano and the late Minister of Information and Communications, Prof Dora Akunyili.

ACP also honoured the senator representing Anambra South in the National Assembly, Andy Uba.

The event, which was the ACP’s fourth Session and Recognition Ceremony, was held yesterday at the Dolly Hills Hotel in Onitsha.

Ngige and Uba restated their commitment to the development of Anambra State and other parts of Nigeria.

A philanthropist, Prince Dr Arthur Eze, was also honoured with the other Anambra political icons, who stood out for what the organisers called their roles in the development of the state and the country.

The honourees promised to continue their selfless services to take the state and Nigeria to the next level of development.

They said the positions they occupy were not for self-enrichment but to contribute to the development of the state and Nigeria.

Obiano, who was represented by the Head of Service (HOS), Chief Barry Harry Udu, said his administration was committed to sustaining the security of life and property it had achieved since inception.

Dr Chike Akunyili received the post humus award for his late wife, Prof. Dora Akunyili.

The widower described the honour as a singular privilege to him for his late wife.

He said the deceased liked hard work and transparency, adding that he appreciated where hard work was recognised.

ACP President Emeka Eze said his group was a non-governmental organisation (NGO) striving to create tight associations and relationships among Anambra indigenes and residents.

Other cardinal objectives of ACP, he said, include helping to breed a dynamic interaction to foster the drive for a better, positive, conducive, decisive, patriotic democratic principles and better way of life in Anambra State.

He said: “It (ACP) operates in Nigeria; more so in the Diaspora and exceedingly developed in the United States of America (U.S.A). It is motivated by five major objectives which include recognition and encouragement.”

Eze said Obiano was honoured for initiating the most secured environment since the creation of Anambra State, while Dr Ngige was honoured for being the greatest initiator of transformation and development in the state.

  • Judicial commission to Obiano: scrap Customary Appeal Court

The Anambra State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has called for the scrapping of the customary court of appeal.

The reason the commission gave was lack of cases in those courts.

The JSC wants the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Peter Umeadi to mandate Governor Willie Obiano to send an Executive Bill to the state House of Assembly for the closure.

Also, to prevail on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to transfer the judges of the Customary Court of Appeal therein to remain and serve out their terms in the High Courts  in the state.

The decisions by the JSC were contained in its communiqué made available to reporters in Awka, the state capital, during its press conference addressed by the executive secretary of the body, Christian Nnabuihe.

Nnabuihe was flanked during the conference by the Chief Registrar of the state High Court, Doris Nkechinyere Ezeani and the Chief Registrar of the Customary Court of Appeal in the state, Ken Nwoye.

The communiqué read, in part,  “Whereas  the fact that as at June 2016 the number of cases before the Customary Court of Appeal stand at [three], more so when those cases are almost ready for judgment, with possibility that there would be no further work to be done at the customary court of appeal, Anambra state thereafter…”

“The commission here resolved to communicate to His Excellency, Chief Willie M. Obiano, Governor of Anambra State, to cause an Executive Bill, to be presented to the House of Assembly of Anambra State to authorise the closure of the Customary Court of Appeal Anambra State and thereafter prevail on the National Judicial Council to transfer the Hon. Judge therein to remain and serve out their terms in the High Court of Justice of Anambra State.”

APC criticises Obiano for non-conduct of council poll

The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Governor Willie Obiano for using caretaker committees in the state’s 21 local government areas, instead of conducting a fresh poll to elect their chairmen.

Also, the party faulted the N20 million the governor promised each of the 177 communities in the state for what it called developmental projects.

It described the governor’s action as a ploy to wet the ground ahead of 2017 governorship election.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Awka, the state capital, APC State Secretary, Chukwuma Agufugo, wondered why Anambra was drifting to a broke and debtor state.

He noted that the government’s move was parochial as it was allegedly caused by lack of vision.

Agufugo bemoaned the level of development the state government was expecting to derive from its move.

The party’s spokesman said instead of development, it would cause a crisis between and among the individuals, leaders and communities.

He condemned the move, urging the government to look beyond what he called petty policies aimed at advancing a second term bid of the APGA administration.

Agufugo advised the APGA government to implement policies that would engender the socio-economic growth of the state and avoid going back to the mannerism of the previous administration of sharing tax payers’ money to suspected cronies.

He said: “You will recall that the state government recently borrowed some money and just sent a bill, which was approved by the House of Assembly, to apply for a bailout loan of billions of naira from the Federal Government”

The APC spokesman advised the APGA-led administration to return the development burden of the rural areas to the local government areas, as enshrined in the Constitution, by first conducting a free, fair, credible local government election.
