Defection: Delta APC stalwart urges Oborevwori to embrace old, new members

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has been urged to carry both old and new members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) along following his defection, alongside the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in Delta State, to the ruling party.

A top APC chieftain and National Leader of the Southern Youth Movement (SYM), High Chief Promise Lawuru, popularly known as “Ozigizaga,” made the call during a press conference in Warri on Monday.

Lawuru emphasised that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to freedom of association and advised Governor Oborevwori to create a strategic framework that accommodates all members of the party.

He said, “Nigeria is operating a multiparty system, so people should not use the developments within the PDP and APC to judge the country’s political landscape. For instance, in every general election, almost 30 political parties participate, which shows that Nigeria cannot operate a one-party system.”

Commenting on the mass defection, Lawuru described it as part of democratic dynamics, saying: “What you are seeing today—the mass defections from PDP to APC—are ingredients of democracy; everyone has freedom of association, and that is exactly what has taken place.”

While welcoming Governor Oborevwori and his team to the APC, Lawuru advised, “My words to the governor are for him to apply wisdom in addressing party matters and in the governance of the state.”

“In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, we must prioritise unity and collaboration. Therefore, he should see everyone as one big family because the current situation of the governor is like someone with two wives; if you want to cheat the senior for the junior, there will be a fight. And if you want to cheat the junior for the senior, there will be trouble.

“So, he (Oborevwori) should design a methodology to take along the old members of the APC and the new members in an equal manner.”

UPDATED: Oborevwori, Okowa, others formally join APC

…you are “co-owners”, Shettima tells defectors

In a historic political shift on Monday, Delta State Governor Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and a host of their supporters formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Vice President Kashim Shettima assuring them that they are now “co-owners” of the ruling party and not mere guests.

Speaking at a grand reception in Asaba, the Delta State capital, Vice President Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, welcomed the defectors, hailing their decision as a bold endorsement of the APC’s enduring promise and national vision.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima stressed the need for unity and collaboration, emphasising that the new members were joining as equals in the ruling party.

“You are not guests in this house; you are now co-owners. This is now as much your party as it is ours,” VP Shettima said, describing the new APC entrants as giants in Nigerian politics.

The Vice President highlighted the significance of their decision to join the APC, saying, “The true measure of a political party lies not merely in the enthusiasm of its members, but in the conviction it inspires among those who once stood across from them.”

Welcoming the new members into the party fold, Senator Shettima noted that they were joining the party “not as defectors but as brothers and sisters who have found their rightful place among” the APC faithful, even as he maintained that they were joining the governing party not as guests but as family and “as fellow architects of a better Nigeria.”

The Vice President explained the APC’s philosophy of governance and party politics, pointing out that “what sets the APC apart is not an illusion of uniformity; it is our acceptance that differences are inevitable and that greatness lies in managing them.

“Our tables have always been tables of dialogue, places where every member, no matter how great or small, is welcomed to air their grievances, challenge our direction, and shape our future,” he added.

Shettima also reflected on the party’s journey right from inception. “Since its formation in 2013, the APC has been both the dream and the drama of Nigerian democracy. So many predictions have been written about us as though we were an experiment doomed to fail,” he said.

He credited the party’s longevity to its collaborative approach, observing that “dialogue, not dictation, has been our shield against disintegration,” just as he said there was no way the party could have survived this long without listening to one another.

“Today is not merely a day of receiving new members. This is a declaration that the spirit of our great nation is alive — a spirit that dreams beyond personal ambition, beyond party lines, and sees the larger arc of history. Nigeria is greater than all of us, and what we do here today is a step towards strengthening her promise,” the Vice President further stated.

Earlier, National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, said it was a historic day, even as he described the defection of the Delta State Governor as a political legacy.

Ganduje thanked President Bola Tinubu for providing good leadership that has attracted more credible persons into the APC fold.

“The National Working Committee of our party is happy with this decision of the Governor, and we are impressed with the cordial relationship existing between the Governor and his predecessor, Dr Okowa,” he said.

Formally accepting the Delta State Governor into the APC, Ganduje handed over the flag of the party and a broom, the main symbol of the APC, to Oborevwori.

The national chairman thanked Vice President Kashim Shettima and all APC Governors who attended the occasion, informing them that more eminent Nigerians are on their way to the APC.

On his part, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, said it is a special day for APC because of the wealth of experience of the Delta State Governor.

He said the ideology of the APC protects national interest and the improvement of the lives of Nigerians.

“We are joyful and hopeful. Our party, the APC, protects national interest and expands the hope horizon,” Governor Uzodinma said, while commending the developmental strides of the Delta State Governor, saying they are progressive.

He continued: “Today, when I was driving into Asaba this afternoon, I saw development, I saw the performance of the governor, I saw infrastructure. The state looks like an APC state.

“So, I’m not surprised that the governor, in his wisdom, decided to join our great party because what we are known for is what he is already doing in Delta State”.

Speaking on behalf of the new APC entrants, Governor Oborevwori insisted that what happened in Delta State was a movement, not defection, explaining that all stakeholders of the state were part of the decision to move to the governing APC.

The governor, who said Delta State could no longer be in the opposition, thus the change of gears, added that the state decided to reciprocate the love of President Tinubu, whom he said loves the state and has done a lot for it.

“All our members in the National Assembly have agreed that when plenary resumes, they will defect on the floor of the two chambers of the Assembly.

“All the state and ward executives of our party and representatives at all levels will move. We want to be in the Renewed Hope Agenda, which is in line with my agenda,” Oborevwori said, assuring that there will be no faction in the Delta State APC.

Also, former Governor of the state, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, said the people of the state decided to change their path for the common good of the citizens.

“This decision is in the best interest of the state. We need to connect to the centre to gain more democratic dividends. It is in the best interest of the state and the people. We need to embrace each other with the oneness of heart. I believe a great result will come forth from this decision,” Okowa assured.

He pledged support for President Bola Tinubu and his successor, Governor Oborevwori.

State Governors in attendance were those of Kwara, AbdulRahman-AbdulRazaq; Gombe, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya; Yobe, Mai Mala Buni; Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Benue, Hyacinth Alia; Nasarawa, Engr. JUST IN: Shettima receives Oborevwori, Okowa, PDP members to APC in Delta

It was a carnival-like atmosphere on Monday in Asaba, the Delta State capital, as a massive crowd of Deltans gathered to witness Vice President Kashim Shettima formally receive Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the entire Delta State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Cenotaph, venue of the event, was transformed into a sea of yellow — the signature colour of Governor Oborevwori’s political family — as party faithful turned out in their thousands, defying the scorching sun to dance and celebrate to music blaring from strategically positioned loudspeakers.

The grand event attracted an array of dignitaries, including APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, 16 APC governors, members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), federal lawmakers, and ministers.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Shettima, described the political realignment as a “tsunami of unimaginable proportions,” praising Governor Oborevwori and immediate past Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for their statesmanship and the unity displayed in leading the defection to the APC.

Tinubu commended the cordial relationship between the two Delta leaders, expressing confidence that their move would strengthen the APC’s dominance and foster greater political stability in the state and the nation at large.

He said: “What can be greater than the promise of this day. This is a political tsunami of unimaginable proportions that has never happened in the history of the South-South region and barely in the history of this country.

“A political tsunami of this proportion has never happened where all the members of the upper chamber of the National Assembly are in the APC.

“The Speaker and all the members of the House of Assembly. So many members of the House of Representatives, the Governor and his entire cabinet, and 500 councillors across the 25 local government areas of this great state. What testimony do you have greater than this?

“The true measure of a political party lies not merely in the industry, the very name of its members, but in the conviction. It is, in fact, among those who once stood across from them.

“This vindication is even more fundamental. When those who once saw us as outsiders and opponents crossed the lines of difference to become part of the enduring family we have built.

“This historic day, therefore, is both a celebration of the enduring promise of the APC and a tribute to the vision, courage, and foresight of the great giants we have come to welcome into the hall of fame of our political party, along with their devoted followers who are joining us today.

“I want to pay special tribute to Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the wonderful relationship that exists between him and his successor

“Senator Okowa, you are indeed a great leader and Governor Oborevwori, for embracing him, for treating him with respect and decorum, you are even a greater leader,” he said.

“We are here with our unshaken belief in the power of collaboration, the understanding that we are stronger together than we can ever be apart.

“What sets the APC apart is not an illusion of uniformity; it is our accepting that differences are inevitable and that greatness lies in managing them.

“Our tables have always been tables of dialogue, places where every member, no matter how big or small, is welcome to air their grievances.

“Your Excellencies, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the other great men and women, we welcome you to the APC today.

“I bring them the warm assurance of His Excellency President Bola, Ahmed Tendul, GCFR, and all members of the APC.

“Now that you have come we are all co-owners because according to the constitution of the party, the Governor of the party is the leader of the party in the state, this is now as much as your party as it is ours.

“You have brought to us a wealth of experience, a breath of wisdom and a measure of strength for which we shall always remain grateful.

“This is a declaration that the strength of our great nation is alive, a spirit that brings your ambition, your party alliance and sees the larger set of history.

“Nigeria is greater than all of us, and what we do here today is a step towards strengthening our promise. We welcome you, Your Excellency, not as defectors but as brothers and sisters who have found your rightful place amongst us.

“We welcome you not as guests but as family, we welcome you as fellow architects of a better Nigeria and may this day be remembered not just by what it signifies today but for the enduring fraternity and vision of source for tomorrow.”

Responding, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described the defection as a historic movement in the best interest of the state.

He pledged to unify the party to ensure total victory for the party in the coming elections.

“What you have seen here today is a movement, it’s not a defection, it’s a movement. We have done consultation with the National Assembly, with leadership, with stakeholders at the state level, at the senatorial level, at the local government level, at the ward level, and we all decided that we must all join.”

“This is Delta state we cannot carry last, when we stand for something we remain committed to it, we have been in opposition for almost 10 years.

“Do we need that? Mr. President has supported us, he has shown us love. We cannot face him in 2027 to work against him. The love that he has shown to us in Delta State, we need to reciprocate it.

“We cannot do it in our own party. You have to be inside to do it, and to do it well. We have to do it at our party.

“When you consult widely, you see everybody will come with you, and you can see that the love is organic, you can see my relationship with governors, you see all the governors here

you see the large numbers of governors yesterday 9 came yesterday and slept today see all of them here I want to bless all of you. I want to thank all of you.

This is a movement, this is not defection. We have agreed we will move together and when we move together, what is in the national we will be able to grab it.

“Our members in the National Assembly they are all the next, they have agreed they will all defect on the floor of the house.  Mr Speaker and we have justification to move.

“All of us want to be in the Renew Hope Agenda, which is in line with my MORE Agenda.

“For us in Delta State, it’s a statement, and I believe other governors will join because it’s a movement, and when you have a movement, you don’t fail.

“There are some things people say in the newspaper, that there is confusion, there is a faction.

“As I have come, there will be no faction again. Let me tell you, APC is not like PDP. The Governor takes charge, and we are taking charge.

“I don’t believe in any faction, everybody must queue and we will unite the party to move this state forward for the benefit of our people and to bring development, peace and unity to our state and Nigeria.”

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, applauded the cordial relationship between the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

Ganduje said the National Working Committee of the party was highly impressed because of the cordial relationship existing between the predecessor and successor which, according to him, is very difficult see in the country.

“So, we have to thank Dr. Okowa for that good relationship. Ladies and gentlemen, my job is very important, which is accepting, welcoming, and also embracing the Governor and the people of Delta State into our great party, the APC.

“Mr. Governor, what l would like to tell you while accepting you into our party, is that our core value in APC is progressive leadership and coincidentally, from what we have seen on the ground in respect of your programmes and your projects, you are a progressive Governor.

“So, we are welcoming you for coming home. We believe in progressive ideas, we believe in proximity, interacting with different levels of our party; we believe in openness, we believe in internal democracy, we believe in self accountability and we thank you for coming in,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, said the ceremony was quite historic and special in the life of the APC as a political party in Nigeria.

Senator Uzodinma who disclosed that members of the APC were happy with the new political development in Delta State, said that the All Progressives Congress meant well for the country.

“We are here to identify with you. We, therefore, urged all Deltans to continue to support their Governor as he consolidates on the achievements his administration has recorded so far,” he added.

On his part, the immediate past Governor of the State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, explained that the decision to change political direction was made for the common good and in the best interest of the state.

“It was not about personal ambitions but the need to connect to Abuja, where significant goodwill and resources exist, especially since the state is a major contributor.

Reflecting on his experience as a former governor in opposition, Okowa emphasised that while Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is performing well, aligning with Abuja would strengthen his efforts.

“After thorough consultations with stakeholders, it was clear that a bold, strategic, and patriotic move was necessary for the state’s future.”

He stressed the importance of unity among all members, both old and new, encouraging everyone to embrace each other and work together with a shared purpose.

He called for strong support for both the President and the Governor, believing that this unity would allow them to dominate the political landscape of Delta State.

    • Okowa, PDP leaders move en masse

Asaba, the capital of Delta State, is aglow.

Today, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, other elected officials and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders from ward to state will be received into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oborevwori, who dumped the leading opposition party last week, will get the broom, symbol of the ruling party, from Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, at the Cenotaph, the venue of the historic rally.

Ganduje arrived in Asaba yesterday and held a series of meetings with defecting officials and Oborevwori.

The defection is a big event – described as a political Tsunami by observers – because Delta had been a PDP state since 1999.

Twenty-one APC governors and leaders are expected at the event.

As of 6pm yesterday, no fewer than 10 governors had arrived in the state capital.

These are: Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) chairman Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), AbdulRaheem AbdulRasaq (Kwara), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Dikko Raddah (Katsina) and Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe).

Former APC National Chairman, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, was among the national leaders who also arrived in Asaba last night.

The venue was looking resplendent, decorated with  APC flags and different banners fluttering at strategic locations.

The unprecedented defection sent a shockwave across the country last week.

Apart from Oborevwori, other key PDP leaders who would be received into the APC are former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who was Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 presidential poll; Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, House of Assembly Speaker Emomotimi Guwor, Senator James Manager, commissioners and special advisers, state and federal lawmakers, chairmen of local government and councillors, and state local government and ward chairmen.

Many APC leaders, including Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), Olorogun Otega Emerhor; former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe; Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas (Delta South); and his Delta Central counterpart, Sen. Ede Dafinone, applauded the defection.

Delta APC urged members to turn up en masse to receive the defectors with open arms.

It said the defection signals a new era of consolidation and growth for the chapter ahead of future elections.

It urged the party faithful to massively mobilise supporters for the ceremony.

The Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, in a statement, described the defection as a landmark event, which has shattered the political firmament of the state.

He said: “It marks a new dawn for the progressive family in Delta State and symbolises unity, inclusivity and our collective commitment to the growth and development of our dear Delta State under the leadership and guidance of our amiable governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, as he charts a new course for the destiny of the state through the M.O.R.E. agenda, in conjunction with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

    Omo-Agege welcomes Oborevwori

Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, who was the APC governorship candidate in 2023, welcomed Oborevwori to the party.

He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “political sagacity and visionary leadership.”

Omo-Agege said in a statement that the issues arising from the defection were being addressed “with prudence and foresight” following consultations with the APC national leadership, the Progressive Governors Forum, and local stakeholders.

Urging party members to storm the rally, he said: “This is a moment for unity, understanding, and a shared commitment to the progress of Delta State and Nigeria.”

He said the defection “reaffirms our commitment to progressive governance, promising a brighter future for our people and a more prosperous, secure, and united Nigeria.”

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, in a statement by his media aide, Ike Abiagom, said Delta “APC family welcomes Governor Oborevwori and other PDP leaders into its fold,” describing their decision as a significant boost to the party’s strength and structure across the state.

He said the political realignment would bolster President Tinubu’s re-election campaign, adding that it is a game-changer.

Lauding Oborevwori for his courage, Nwaoboshi maintained that the defection signified a turning point for governance and political collaboration.

He urged APC members to embrace the new members with open arms, stressing that unity within the party would be crucial for delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

    Okotete hails Delta governor

Executive Director (Business Development), NEXIM Bank, Stella Okotete, expressed excitement at the defection, saying that it would strengthen the party and enhance its chances of achieving greater success in future polls.

Okotete said in a statement: “This momentous decision marks not just a political transition, but a bold affirmation of vision, courage, and commitment to the development of Delta State through inclusive, progressive governance.

“Your Excellency, your entry into the APC is a powerful testament to our party’s rising influence and capacity to unite all well-meaning leaders under one formidable umbrella of growth and transformation.

“As we welcome the Governor and all the PDP members in Delta State into our fold, I call on every APC member—leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots supporters alike—to embrace this new era with open arms and renewed purpose.

“Let us put aside all divisive tendencies and prioritise loyalty to the party, unity of purpose, and service-driven governance.

“Our collective strength lies in our unity. And today, with Delta State now firmly aligned with the centre, we stand at the threshold of greatness.

“Together, let us consolidate our efforts towards the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, support the leadership of Governor Oborevwori, and ensure the continuous growth and dominance of the APC in every corner of our state.

“A progressive Delta is not a dream—it is our present reality. Let us build it, protect it, and be proud of it.”

‘No plan for a one-party state’

Some opposition figures and other critics, who objected to the gale of defections to the APC, have alleged that it was a grand design by President Tinubu to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

But Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, who reflected on the realignment of forces, rejected the insinuation, reiterating the President’s avowed belief in multi-party democracy.

He said in a statement titled: ‘Democracy strong and alive in Nigeria ‘ that contrary to the false claims and propaganda, democracy is not under threat in Nigeria.

He insisted that the accusations that the administration is moving towards authoritarianism are baseless and exaggerated.

Onanuga said: “While the opposition elements are understandably heartbroken and disillusioned over the failure of their fabled grand coalition to gain traction, we find it disturbing that they resorted to peddling false allegations of the promotion of a one-party state against President Bola Tinubu, who is working very hard to reverse decades of economic mismanagement of our country.

“We must add that no policy, official action, or directive from the Presidency seeks to ‘dismantle democracy’ or ‘weaken opposition’ or create a one-party state.

“Accusations of bribery, blackmail, and the weaponisation of state institutions only exist in the idle minds of politicians and their agents who have failed in their assigned duty of opposition.”

Onanuga said the opposition cannot blame President Tinubu and the APC for their poor organisation, indiscipline, and gross incompetence in managing their affairs, adding that “it is certainly not part of President Tinubu’s job to organise or strengthen opposition parties.”

He stressed: “We find it curious that those who celebrated the defection of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the formation of a regional grand coalition with the sole aim of defeating President Tinubu in the 2027 election are the same people shedding crocodile tears over Nigeria’s so-called drift to a one-party state and authoritarianism.”

Nwoko: your defection should be transformative

Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North), urged  Oborevwori to leave behind the “old habits” of the PDP so that his defection could be transformative.

He said in a statement that the governor should “leave behind the politics of survival and step into the politics of legacy”.

Nwoko, who had earlier left PDP for APC, said: “No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Old habits, old politics, and the old deals that led to the gradual decline of the PDP in Delta must be left behind.”

He praised the governor’s decision, describing it as a bold step that opens new possibilities for Delta State.

Nwoko said the APC, “reenergised and focused,” had started laying the groundwork for constitutional amendments, including the creation of Anioma and New Delta states.

He said: “Your defection must not be symbolic; it must be transformative. This is your opportunity to embrace a new sense of purpose and demonstrate renewed dedication to progressive governance, fairness, and inclusive development.”

Oborevwori pledges more support for DELSU as 6,401 graduate

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has promised to double the support of the State Government towards the infrastructural growth and development of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

The Governor made the pledge at the 17th convocation ceremony of the university where a total of 6,401 students graduated on Saturday.

The university also bestowed honorary degrees on Chief Broderick Uvieoghene Arigbodi, Professor Tanure Ojaide and High Chief Eta Enahoro for their accomplishments and contributions to society.

Oborevwori called on all stakeholders to collaborate with the state government to meet the needs of the University.

“The state government would double its efforts to continually support. We will continue to tackle the recurrent issue of infrastructural gaps with the available resources.

“There is need for stakeholders to collaborate with the government to meet the needs of the University,” Oborevwori stated.

The Governor commended the university for the giant strides it has been making in the academia, stating, “DELSU has continued to provide quality education to our citizens, this is evident in its improved ranking.”

He also applauded the new Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba, for the construction works undertaken and completed within four months of his assumption of office.

Oborevwori also charged the graduating students to become global changers, adding “whatever problems we see in the world today are opportunities for growth. Keep learning, graduation does not mean the end of learning. Never give up on your dreams. Life is full of twist and turns, troubles and trials. Whatever happens, keep pressing.”

The VC said inadequate funding and shortage of workforce topped challenges of the University.

Disclosing the number of graduands, he said a total of 4,706 students bagged first degrees.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar yesterday sought to rationalise his frequent switching of political parties and allegiances, saying defections, alliances and realignments are part and parcel of democratic politics.

“We’ve seen them before, and we’ll see them again,” he said in response to criticism of his planned  coalition with some politicians ahead of the 2027 elections, and this week’s mass defection of his core supporters in Delta State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Among the Delta defectors was Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, had called the Thursday defection shocking and painful to the party.

The defection seems to have only added to the myriad of crises ravaging the party.

It emerged yesterday that confusion still surrounds the office of the PDP National Secretary.

The Nation gathered that two conflicting memos were issued during the week naming different persons, Architect Setonji Koshoedo and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, as the rightful occupant of the office.

Atiku, in the statement posted on his verified X handle @atiku, accused his critics of hypocrisy and selective outrage.

“When PDP leaders are busy sipping tea and brokering power deals with President Tinubu, it’s called strategic alliance. But the moment I greet Peter Obi, el-Rufai, or visit Buhari, it becomes a national emergency,” he said.

His statement: “I have been overwhelmed with inquiries from concerned Nigerians, all eager to understand my position on the latest political shifts, particularly the defection of some PDP members to the ruling party.

“Let me be unequivocal: freedom of association and expression are not optional in a democracy — they are fundamental rights. Alongside these stand the pillars of a just and functional democratic society: the people, the rule of law, credible elections, and accountability. Undermine any of these and democracy itself begins to crumble.

“As someone who holds fast to these values, I bear no grudges against anyone for exercising their right to political alignment. Defections, alliances, and realignments are part and parcel of democratic politics. We’ve seen them before, and we’ll see them again.

“Some have resorted to insults because I visited former President Muhammadu Buhari. Let’s not rewrite history: Buhari is not only a former leader but a significant statesman in the Nigerian political landscape.

“During the 2013 opposition merger, the leaders of the time consulted widely — including visits to Obasanjo and Babangida. So why is it now sacrilegious for me and other leaders to visit Buhari in Kaduna?

“If you truly believe in freedom of association, then you must respect the rights of all political actors to engage, regardless of party lines.

“When PDP leaders are busy sipping tea and brokering power deals with President Tinubu, it’s called strategic alliance. But the moment I greet Peter Obi, el-Rufai, or visit Buhari, it becomes a national emergency. Hypocrisy and the politics of selective outrage have never been this fashionable!

“Let us be clear: the coming political battle is not APC versus PDP, or LP versus APC. It is Nigerians versus an administration that has plunged the nation into untold suffering.

“The economy is in free fall. Inflation is choking the masses. Jobs are vanishing. Youth restiveness is surging to terrifying levels. Nigerians are not just tired — they are angry, and rightfully so.

“This moment is about collective survival. The real enemy is not one another — it is the Tinubu administration’s abysmal failure. We must reject every attempt to distract us with ethnic, regional, or religious sentiments. These are tools of manipulation, designed to divide and conquer, used by those with nothing else to offer.

“The Tinubu administration has no achievements to stand on, no credible record to defend. Its only strategy is chaos and division, because that’s the last refuge of the incompetent. And make no mistake— an incompetent captain does not only wreck his ship; he endangers the lives of everyone on board.”

Net citizens lash out at ex-VP

Critics responded immediately to him on social media.

    Some of the reactions:

logicoversentiments@majorlouwe: “The question is when are you defecting to APC??”

Characteristix@Metalistix: “Your statement on the defection of your running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa @IAOkowa, is a master class in evasion, deflection, and selective principle.

“The question Nigerians are asking is not whether people have the right to defect — they do. The real issue is what such defections reveal about the integrity, coherence, and ideological emptiness of a political campaign @Atiku led not long ago.

“If even your own running mate no longer finds the platform viable, what does that say about your leadership or the direction of the @OfficialPDPNig?

“Even more ironic is your attempt to take the moral high ground on political realignments. You are the same man who has defected across party lines more times than any major Nigerian politician in recent history — from @OfficialPDPNig to ACN, to @OfficialAPCNg , and back to PDP.

“In many ways, you’re the architect and symbol of Nigeria’s culture of political nomadism, which makes your silence on Okowa’s move feel more like self-preservation than statesmanship.

“Rather than confronting the internal rot and crisis within the PDP — including defections, disunity, and waning public trust — you simply divert attention to the failures of the Tinubu administration.

“Yes, the ruling party deserves criticism, but this should not serve as a convenient escape route from addressing the collapse of leadership within the opposition itself.

“It’s not hypocrisy Nigerians are reacting to; it’s the insult to their intelligence when political leaders talk circles around issues they are too compromised to confront.

“Leadership demands clarity, not cowardice. And silence in the face of political betrayal from within one’s own camp is not restraint — it is abdication of responsibility.”

“With all due respect, sir, the best you can do for PDP is to step aside, become the elder statesmen you should be, and allow the party to find a new and vibrant leader. Keep in mind a strong opposition is good for democracy to thrive.

Ragnarok @SimoncoleB: “I think you laid the foundation when you joined APC a while back”

EBITU @EbituPromise: “The same people who walked out of PDP in 2014 and triggered its collapse are now the ones crying.”

Dendebuller@toofighting: “Personally, I think you have tried, and it’s time for you to take a backseat from active politics and throw your weight behind a young and brilliant candidate.

“At your level, it should be a shame if you do not have a mentee that you can entrust Nigeria into their capable hands.”

A former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George, had last week accused Atiku of betraying the PDP on account of his planned floating of a mega party and his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Those who are now talking about forming a mega party — what is the purpose of that? You belong to a solid organisation, the PDP, and yet you’re meeting with Baba Buhari. Is he a member of our party? Was this discussed with anyone in the PDP? Is this a private company?” George said on ARISE Television.

“Look at General Buhari shaking hands with these guys. Is he one of us? We fielded you against him, and he trounced you. Now you’re running to him?”

We have rooms to accommodate all, APC assures decampees

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC yesterday told new members of the party that it had enough rooms to effectively accommodate all.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka was in Abuja yesterday to welcome Senator Kawu Sumaila-led New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) decampees from Kano State that formally decamped to the governing party on Thursday.

Sumaila, a Senator representing Kano South and former Secretary to the Kano State Government, Dr. Baffa Bichi, along with some former and serving members of the National Assembly and the State House of Assembly, were formally received into APC by the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Thursday in Abuja.

Welcoming the new members Morka said: “Our great party applauds this decision and assures the incoming leaders and their teeming supporters of effective accommodation in the APC family.

“We are confident that this development, a clear endorsement of the focused leadership of President Bola Tinubu, will further galvanise support for the administration’s unprecedented multi-sector reforms, and position the party for overwhelming victory in Kano State in the upcoming 2027 general elections.”

Meanwhile, sources within the opposition NNPP in Kano State hinted that plans have been concluded for a mass defection of party members into APC in May

Oborevwori’s defection sparks discontent in PDP; APC in buoyant mood

The APC, which is still savouring the mass defection from the PDP in Delta State, has set machinery in motion to formalise the registration of new members.

The party officially notified all Local Government Chairmen to collect Registration Booklets.

The APC, in a statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, said the registration of new members was a crucial step toward ensuring their full integration into the party structure.

“We encourage all new members to visit their local ward chairmen and complete the registration formalities to formalise their membership,” he said.

State Chairman of the APC, Mr Omeni Sobotie, was quoted as saying: “The influx of members into our party is a testament to the growing trust in our leadership and the promises of unity and progress that we offer. These new members are crucial to APC’s future in Delta State.”

It added that new members are expected to play a vital role in the party’s goals of achieving “Renewed Hope” for the people of Delta as it prepares for upcoming political challenges.

With a growing number of PDP defectors swelling the ranks of the APC, the party is now positioning itself to capitalise on the strengthened unity and increased influence ahead of future political contests.

It was gathered that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori may dissolve his cabinet to accommodate original APC members.

Some PDP leaders at ward level are said to have expressed  surprise at the defection of the governor and others,

One of them from Delta Central, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said neither he nor his constituents were involved in any meeting or decision to leave the party.

Some PDP loyalists in the state have asked former PDP chair, Chief Solomon Areyenka, and all other executives and stakeholders at various levels who decamped to the APC to  officially tender and publish their resignation letters.

The group insisted the step is essential for proper documentation and to distinguish between committed party loyalists and political opportunists.

They made the call in a statement released by the group’s secretary, Henry Onokpekun,

According to them, Senator James Manager lacked the authority to speak for the entire PDP family in Delta.

They said: “He can only speak for those who were present at that meeting. PDP still remains Delta, and Delta still remains PDP. This party cannot be wished away by a single pronouncement.”

They challenged the validity of the defection, noting that PDP remained solidly rooted at the grassroots and that no constitutional process was followed to indicate a formal disbandment or mass resignation from the party’s structures.

The group warned APC to be wary of what it described as the “entry of political mercenaries” into its fold, stressing that many of the defectors may be attempting to maintain dual loyalties.

“What we are seeing is a clear case of political hedging. Some are simply following the tide blindly without knowing what they’re entering into. Many will quickly return to the PDP when their expectations are dashed,” the group said.

.According to the group, the defectors, particularly those in leadership, have reportedly secured personal political deals that may not favour their followers, who are being dragged along without full disclosure.

A PDP state executive member who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “I am unsure of my job with this defection. The feeling amongst many of us is apprehension as events are in a state of flux right now. We are unsure that we will retain our jobs less than one year into office.”

He said newly elected PDP members and appointees were concerned about being edged out, stressing that Governor Oborevwori’s defection will pose more issues as the fight position intensifies.

Oborevwori made wisest decision, says Philip Shaibu

Former Deputy Governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu, has described the Delta defections into the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) as a vindication of his position.

He said the defection of Delta Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori and all his appointees and immediate past governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, was an eye opener to many that had not seen it coming.

Shaibu, who spoke in Abuja, said that he foresaw and predicted this scenario while still in the PDP few years back, but was misunderstood.

His words:“I remember when I was leaving the PDP some of you asked me why I was leaving, and I said, I do not see a future for PDP in Nigeria because of the way the players are handling the party.

“The players were not democratic. The leadership was not democratic, and I shouted, and then I was asked to keep quiet.

“This is because the players that I see in charge of the party and the way I see things happening does not show what PDP actually stands for.

“I predicted that in less than one year, as at that time, if they don’t change, the PDP will be history in Nigeria, Then, I was still a member of the party. So, it’s not like I was not a PDP member.

“Some of the feelings I have, they also share the same feeling. I see more governors leaving. No progressive governor can remain in PDP.

“I salute the courage of the Delta governor, and I say the wisest decision he has taken in his political career is what he did on Wednesday.”

How PDP got two national secretaries within 24 hours

Between Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, the PDP officially acknowledged two persons for the position of National Secretary.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Head of the Department of Administration at the party’s National Secretariat,  Alhaji Gurama Bawa, issued a memo to all staff that the Acting  National Chairman, Ambassador Damagum, had directed that Architect Setonji Koshoedo, who was Deputy National Secretary, had now become acting National Secretary.

The internal memo titled ‘Appointment of Acting National Secretary’ and distributed to all offices and staff at the PDP national headquarters stated thus:

“I am directed by the Ag. National Chairman to inform all Staff that Hon. (Arch) Setonji Koshoedo, Deputy National Secretary (DNS) is now the Acting National Secretary of our great party till further notice.

“In line of the above, all party correspondences should be channeled to Hon.

(Arch) Setonji Koshoedo. You are kindly requested to accord him all the necessary support and cooperation as the Acting National Secretary of our great party.

“This is for your information and guidance please.”

The memo with reference number PDP/NS/EST/146 apparently gave effect to the advice contained in resolutions made by the PDP Governors’ Forum during their meeting in Ibadan on April 14, 2025 as part of the 7-point resolution signed by Forum’s Chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed.

The governors recommended that the Deputy National Secretary should take over from Anyanwu ‘pending the nomination and ratification of a substantive secretary from the South East Zone’.

However, in reaction to the position of the Governors’ Forum, Anyanwu declared that there is no provision in the party’s constitution that allows a handful of party men to unilaterally invalidate the PDP constitution or the decision taken at a national convention that elected him as National Secretary for a four-year term in 2021.

At the Exco Hall of the PDP National Secretariat where Ambassador Damagum was presented PDP’s Certificate of Return to the party’s candidate for the November 8 Anambra State governorship election, Jude Ezenwafor, Koshoedo was introduced as the party’s acting national secretary while Anyanwu was absent.

It was later gathered that Anyanwu had remained in his office just one floor above the event venue, with confidence that the situation was going to be temporary.

Twenty four hours later, a counter memo emerged from the same Alhaji Gurawa Bawa, saying Senator Samuel Anyanwu had formally returned to his position as PDP National Secretary.

The new memo with same reference number but a different date directed all PDP staff to note that Senator Samuel Anyanwu has returned to office as substantive National Secretary ‘with immediate effect’

“Consequently the (previous) circular mentioned above should be disregarded null and void and of no consequence,” Bawa said.

A Supreme Court judgment of March 21 this year had invalidated two lower judgments relied upon by PDP Governors’ Forum and other PDP forces to prop up Udeh-Okoye, but rather than return to the status quo ante, forces opposed to the prevalent influence of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike in PDP affairs preferred to interpret the Supreme Court judgment as an opportunity for party elements to redefine who and how to replace Anyanwu.

APC chieftain Orubebe welcomes Oborevwori, others

Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Delta State, Elder GodsDay Orubebe, has welcomed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the PDP family  into the APC, noting that the decision of the Governor to join the APC is very key to the development of Delta State.

Orubebe described the defections at this time in our nation’s political history as a courageous and strategic step that reflects a commitment to the progress and unity of Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.

The former Minister, who stated this in a  statement, noted that in the past 20 months in office Governor Oborevwori has  demonstrated capacity and shown that he is a Governor for all Deltans.

The statement reads: “I warmly welcome the Executive Governor of Delta State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the PDP Family  into the All Progressives Congress (APC). Their decision to join the APC at this pivotal time in our nation’s political history is a courageous and strategic step that reflects a commitment to the progress and unity of Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.

“Governor Oborevwori has demonstrated uncommon leadership and commitment to the development of Delta State. I particularly commend his bold steps in infrastructure development, which have had direct and positive impacts on the lives of ordinary Deltans.

“Governor Oborevwori’s positive decisive action in the reconstruction of the long-abandoned Ohorhor-Bomadi Road is more than a Blessing to our people. That road, which generations of leaders had promised to fix but abandoned is finally receiving the attention it deserves under his watch. The Ijaw people are happy and will not forget this.

“Since assuming office, Governor Oborevwori has shown himself to be a listening leader—one who is genuinely attuned to the yearnings and aspirations of the people. This has been evident in his consultative approach to governance and his willingness to prioritize projects that directly affect the grassroots. His brand of inclusive leadership is what we in the APC welcome and embrace, as we work to build a stronger, more united Delta.

“The engagement of Julius Berger—a globally renowned construction firm—for major road infrastructure and ultra-modern flyovers is another commendable milestone. For the first time in the history of Delta State, we are seeing such a reputable company being engaged to deliver world-class projects. This bold move alone sets Governor Oborevwori apart and sends a strong message about his commitment to quality and long-term infrastructural development.

“As a chieftain of the APC in Delta State and a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, I understand the immense challenges that come with leadership. I also know the significance of having experienced, tested, and development-oriented leaders within our fold. The entrance of Governor Oborevwori and other PDP Leaders into the APC brings new energy, fresh perspectives, and a wealth of experience that will surely strengthen our party ahead of 2027.

“This is not the time for division, but for unity. We must all close ranks, put aside political differences, and focus on what truly matters—the welfare of our people and the future of Delta State. The APC in Delta is big enough to accommodate everyone, and I am confident that together, with Sheriff Oborevwori and other progressive leaders, we will chart a new and greater course for our state.

“Once again, I wholeheartedly welcome His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and Other PDP Leaders and Members. I urge all APC members across the state to open their hearts and arms to these new entrants. Let us build bridges, not walls, and focus on delivering the dividends of democracy to our people

    • Governor leads all political appointees, leaders at all levels to ruling party

    • Atiku’s 2023 running mate leaves

A political tsunami swept through the landscape of Delta State yesterday.

The entire political structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dissolved into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led the immediate-past Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, all political appointees, all elected public office holders and all party executives in a mass defection to the APC.

Okowa was the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, PDP standard bearer in the 2023 presidential election.

The decision was announced after a meeting of party leaders, political office holders, serving and former and other stakeholders at Government House, Asaba.

The governor, who presided, promised to speak further on the development on Monday at a rally.

Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, a journalist, said the PDP leadership in the state came to an “inevitable conclusion” that leaving the party was the only way to ensure political stability.

“The decision was taken to build the bond of love that has existed in our state, to further advance the cause of security and welfare of our people, and to a very large extent, ensure that development in Delta, because every politics is local.

“In taking that decision, we came to the inevitable conclusion that moving out of the PDP is very, very necessary for us to be able to collaborate with our kith and kin and build that state that every Deltan will be proud of.

“It is said that when the taste of the palm wine changes, the drinking pattern also changes. The leaders of the party were unanimous in their view that the political temperature has changed.

“And there was a need for change that would help cement the development in our state; to build the bond of love that has existed in our state, and to further advance the security and welfare of our people.

“We believe that what is happening in the PDP at the national level can be likened to that palm wine whose taste has changed, and that is why this decision has been taken.

“By the grace of God, next Monday, we will be able to make a bold statement that we are moving to the APC.”

Pioneer Chairman of the PDP in the state, Senator James Manager, said the decision was taken in consultation with stakeholders.

He said: “It is a unanimous agreement. I am the pioneer state chairman of the PDP, but you cannot be in a boat that is already capsizing, because I am a riverine man.

“Looking at issues the way they are, we have come to the inevitable conclusion to do something else. It is a collective decision for so many reasons.

“A few days ago, there was a resolution taken by the PDP Governors Forum in Ibadan.

“Almost all the governors were there, and they resolved that they would not go into coalition with any other party.

“As disadvantaged as the PDP is now with about 11 governors, how do you go into a contest with an incumbent president? Do you think you can win?

“That particular resolution killed the spirit of so many PDP members.

“We lost the election in 2015 as a result of a merger which even included splinter groups from the PDP. There are also other reasons.

“Today, Senator Anyanwu is the National Secretary of the party. Tomorrow, it is another person.

“The party must be positioned to go into an election to win. So you see that it is becoming very funny. The PDP is truly in trouble.”

The defectors will be received by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Monday rally.

Also at the meeting were members of the National Assembly, House of Assembly Speaker Emomotimi Guwor, members of the House, commissioners, council chairmen, top government functionaries and party officials.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), welcomed the defectors.

He stated in a post on X: “Today is the day the Lord has made in Delta State. Finally, finally, Delta is APC!

“Thank you, Mr. President, for your leadership that has attracted the best to our Party.

“Thank you, my leader & Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for your foresight and courage in taking this bold decision.”

A member of the PDP National Working Committee who spoke with The Nation expressed concern that the Delta governor may be the first among three governors who will dump the PDP for APC before the end of this year.

“Talks reached advanced stages with three PDP governors and two more will likely be going within the next few months,” the source said.

    APC, Wike hail defectors

    The APC welcomed Oborevwori.

National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said in a statement: “The National Working Committee of the APC under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is highly elated by the decision of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, to join our great party, along with eminent leaders of the PDP, including former Governor of Delta State and vice presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2023 presidential election, His Excellency Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, senior administration officials, leaders and members of the House of Assembly, local government chairmen and councillors in the state, and teeming leaders and members of the PDP.

“Our great party welcomes this important development and assures the governor and incoming leaders and members of Delta PDP of our fullest cooperation and accommodation in the APC family.

“With this move, coming on the heels of steady defection of PDP leaders and members across the state to APC, including members of Delta Unity Group in Ika federal constituency, we are delighted that Delta, now an APC state, stands poised to contribute maximally to the success and realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to the enduring good and prosperity of Deltans and all Nigerians.”

Also, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister,  Nyesom Wike, commended Okowa for supporting President Tinubu.

He said: “It is another endorsement of the President’s good governance and commitment to the development of the country.”

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Communications and Social Media,  Lere Olayinka, Wike called on other Nigerians who are still sitting on the fence to throw in their support for the President.

The minister described the open endorsement of the President by Okowa as “a vindication of the position I took in 2023, which was based on the interest of a united Nigeria.”

“I commend Dr Okowa and Governor Oborevwori for this heart-warming decision, which must have been informed by good governance and commitment of President Bola Tinubu to the oneness and development of Nigeria.

“That is what I have always told people to come out and say, not when they have problems and begin to run up and down.

“They have come out at the right time to show support for the President so that the people of Niger Delta can benefit more from the government, and I commend them.

“I am particularly happy that what I saw before the 2023 presidential election,  others are now seeing and are joining the Renewed Hope train,” the minister said.

    Uzodinma: it’s a heavy development

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma described Oborevwori’s defection as a major development.

Uzodinma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), spoke after a meeting of the forum.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Uzodimma said: “When a governor joins our party, we view it as a significant event and a moment to commend ourselves and thank Almighty God.

“That’s exactly our sentiment. The Progressive Governors resolved to celebrate this development and extend congratulations to one another.”

He noted that governors not originally elected on the APC platform now recognise President Tinubu’s efforts and are aligning with the party for a united Nigeria.

“The APC treats sub-national governance with great importance.

“So, a governor defecting to our party is a heavy development in our political journey,” he said.

Uzodinma said the governors discussed the welfare of the APC and current national issues during their meeting.

They pledged continued support for President Tinubu’s policies and vowed to strengthen the ruling party.

He stated that the Progressive Governors would promote President Tinubu’s achievements so that Nigerians could fully appreciate the administration’s progress.

“We’ll counter blackmail and propaganda aimed at tarnishing the government’s image.

“We, as Progressive Governors, firmly support President Tinubu and the APC government.

“We are pleased with the progress. Despite challenges, the reform policies are beginning to yield visible results.

“We pray God grants the President wisdom, courage and strength to deliver greater dividends of democracy for Nigerians,” Uzodinma said.
