    Oborevwori inaugurates police station, quarters

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has inaugurated a police station and officers’ quarters built by the Chairman of Udu Local Government, Mr. Jite Brown.

He said this is to ensure security of lives and property.

Also inaugurated was a utility surveillance vehicle.

Governor Oborevwori, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kanemala Penewou, lauded the chairman for his foresight in enhancing security architecture in the area.

Describing the project as key, considering the insecurity facing the country, he stressed the importance of securing lives and property, saying it was one of the reasons his administration considered it strategic in its MORE agenda.

“The building is more than just bricks and esthetics, but a symbol of authority, safety and protection of lives and property of the people.

“Let us not forget that the heart and soul of this building are the men and women who will work there and stay as guidance of peace and order in this community.

“As you are all aware, security is paramount, especially now that the level of insecurity is alarming across the country.”

“Police as you all know is our friend and this project is in tandem with the MORE agenda of His Excellency in peace and security.

“At this point, I urge you all to make good use of this opportunity, as the police station serves as a symbol of unity, peace and security for the people in this area,” the governor said.

Udu Council chairman noted that the decision to embark on the project was unanimously taken by the council executive after consultations with stakeholders in the community, especially the traditional council, elders, youths and women leaders in the area.

He hoped that the project would receive support from successive council chairmen, in terms of building additional structures and maintenance, so that the police station would continue to serve the area better.

    Oborevwori following Okowa’s footsteps

    • By Ifeonu Okolo

Sir: The people of Delta State are living in perpetual poverty, occasioned by the nonchalant attitude of those in the corridors of power. This was the view canvassed by a consortium of independent policy analysts, the Independent and Policy Initiative (IMPI), in a recent press statement.

In the statement by its chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, the Delta State government received over N214 billion between June and December 2023 from the Federation Account.

The government has never received such a humongous amount since the current democratic dispensation. Other oil-producing states got relatively less within the period. For instance, Rivers and Akwa Ibom, which are also PDP-controlled states, got N179 billion and N145 billion respectively within the same period.”

Now, despite the huge allocations, the Performance Index released by Phillip Consulting Ltd in December 2023 ascribes a poverty rate of 13.10 per cent to Delta State, as well as an unemployment rate of 31.10 per cent and an inflation rate of 24 per cent.

It is on record that in the eight years that former governor, Ifeanyi Okowa was at the helm of affairs, the state did not witness any progress in the area of human capital development. Under the Okowa administration, the state witnessed the mass sack of government workers under the guise of age falsification, whereas several thousands of aides were engaged by the government and heavily remunerated for contributing nothing to the growth of the state.

The current administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori appears to be following the footsteps of Okowa for obvious reasons. The refusal of the government to offer Delta State workers to implement the N35,000 wage award initiated by the federal government, to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal is an indication that the Oborevwori administration does not have the interest of the workers in the state at heart.

If the Oborevwori administration had implemented the wage award, it would have helped to cushion the effect of the economic crisis facing Deltans in the face of the latest economic crunch in the country. But, the state government found it expedient to emulate other PDP governors in portraying the federal government as the enemy of Nigerians.

The Tinubu administration must put in some measures to ensure that the effects of its policies are felt by Nigerians, especially in the oil-producing states. The measures must be aimed at putting the governors in check, to ensure that monies released to them are judiciously utilised.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori yesterday expressed his support for the financial autonomy of local governments.

He inaugurated an ultra-modern 39-bed cottage hospital built by the Warri South Local Government, chaired by Dr. Michael Tidi.

Oborevwori said: “With this hospital, our people, our women and children will have access to quality and affordable health care services. This is what cottage hospitals are known for. This is why I’m in support of financial autonomy for local government administration.”

Hailing the council leadership for showing example of why local government administration was needed, the governor said it was further proof that once the local government administration was given financial autonomy, it would achieve a lot.

He, therefore, urged other council chairmen to emulate Tidi, whom he said, had done very well.

The governor said the hospital would advance the distribution of quality health care at the grassroots, adding that the gesture was in line with the cardinal programme of his administration.

He said as a grassroots politician, he believed in the bottom top approach to governance, noting that the people must come first in whatever they were doing.

Former Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, described the project as a dream come true.

He congratulated the council boss on the feat.

Tidi appealed to the governor to assist the council with qualified medical personnel, to put the facility to maximum use.

The hospital has administrative room, card room, nurse station, male and female wards, private ward, paediatric ward, chief matron room, labour ward, milking station (for breastfeeding mothers), recovery rooms, main theatre, scan rooms, scrub and storage room, theatre, treatment room, laboratory, chief medical consultancy office and conveniences.

Oborevwori’s alleged plot to relocate varsity sparks protest

A pressure group, Ozoro Positive Voice (OPV), has warned against alleged plot to relocate Faculty of Social Sciences and Management from Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government to Oreropke, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s hometown.

The group accused the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Mr. Godson Echegile, of plotting to move the Faculty of Social Sciences and Management to Orerokpe in Okpe Local Government.

In a statement signed by the group, Dr. Enahoro Michael said relocating the Faculty of Social Sciences and Management was akin to rendering the specialised institution unviable.

Enahoro, who traced the historical ties between Ozoro and Okpe people, claimed they were children of same parents, warning that a foreigner should not divide them.

He said: “Historically, Ozoro and Orerokpe are brothers, as they are children of same parents. As such, an Ika man cannot come and divide us for his personal acrimony and benefits.”

The group urged Governor Oborevwori to reject the move by the Echegile Godson-led governing council of the university.

Efforts to reach Information Commissioner Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza proved abortive, as calls to his phone rang out. He also did not respond to text messages.

  • S/Court: Oborevwori surviving 38 lawsuits divine — Aide

S/Court: Oborevwori surviving 38 lawsuits divine — Aide

Dr  Latimore Oghenesivbe, Executive Assistant on Communications and Orientation to  Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, says the governor’s survival of 38 lawsuits  is a divine intervention.

Oghenesivbe stated this while  addressing newsmen at a  happy hour he organised to fete members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday in Asaba, the Delta capital.

The celebration followed  the Supreme Court verdict of Friday in Abuja that affirmed Oborevwori’s victory.

He noted that the Apex Court knocked off unpopular candidates who were capitalising on technicalities to upturn the Oborevwori’s victory at the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Delta.

According to Oghenesivbe, the governor survived 38 criminal lawsuits, from party primary to post governorship election, making him the most fortunate and divinely anointed celebrant in the history of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.

“His political detractors fought him from all angles, pressed all manners of frivolous criminal charges, all in an attempt to stop him from becoming the governor.

” And when he eventually won the governorship election with a wide margin, Oborevwori’s traducers flooded the Courts with multifaceted lawsuits to remove him as governor but all their efforts crashed.”

He said that in all the travails of  Oborevwori, God was with him, and that if God exalted a man, no mere mortal could bring him down.

He said the plethora of criminal lawsuits pressed against the governor could have swept him off his feet if not for the grace of God.

He described  the inner peace, wisdom and strength of character the governor exhibited throughout his ordeals in the hands of desperate politicians  hell bent on stealing the peoples mandate given to him at the polls,  as divine.

Oghenesivbe said the nation’s judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court  in all recent judgments, sent strong signals to unpopular candidates  shopping for frivolous technicalities that there it would  never be business as usual.

He added that in the case of Delta, it was clear that petitioners and Appellants claims and prayers were lacking in merit as declared by the Apex Court, and therefore,  laboured in vain to suppress the will of the good people of the state.

He said that Oborevwori’s hands are  clean, his personal and academic records remained unblemished, his genuine intentions to serve the people could not be faulted.

“He truly and genuinely won the 2023 governorship election with a wide margin, winning 21 out of 25 Local Government Areas,   as against his distant rival, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who won in four.

“Oborevwori campaigned from Ward to Ward, Unit to Unit, Local Government to Government,  marketing his M.O.R.E Agenda to the good people of Delta.

“His opponents were busy casting aspersions, and some of them relied heavily on federal might and legal technicalities to subvert the will of the people to no avail.

“They did all manners of things to stop the move of God, and as we know it in Christiandom, nobody can battle with God and win, the divine principles of ‘Touch not my anointed applies,” he said.

He said  the result of the divine oil of God on Oborevwori’s head played out at the Supreme Court on Friday.

“His academic records were unblemished, his personal records and strength of character cannot be faulted, his landslide victory at the polls was staggering, and above all, God was and still is, with Oborevwori.

” God Touched  on all the 38 criminal litigations across Courts of competent jurisdictions and ended in favour of the governor and his Deputy, Mr Monday Onyeme.

“They divinely and miraculously survived 38 criminal lawsuits to stand tall and remained unbeatable as affirmed by the Apex Court,” Oghenesivbe said.

He urged continued partnership with the media, adding  that, ” constructive criticism remains ideal for good governance, as it morrows positives and negatives,  necessary for nation building.

“But we must abstain from jungle journalism and dissemination of half truth and data manipulations, upholding professional standards and principles of fairness through balanced reporting,” he said.

The Chairman of NUJ, Delta Council, Mr  Churchill Oyowe, thanked the governor’s aide for deeming it necessary to fete Journalists in the state as part of  Oborevwori’s Supreme Court victory celebration.

He said members of the union remained apolitical but noted that the victory of the  governor at the polls was convincing enough to avoid plethora of post election litigations.

He urged politicians to help strengthen and deepen democratic values and culture by accepting defeat to avoid unnecessary wastage of scarce financial resources in post election legal battles.

Oyowe, on behalf of the  state council,  congratulated  Oborevwori on his victory while urging the governor to be magnanimous in victory by extending the olive branch to his opponents.
