  • 18 for governor in Ondo APC

18 for governor in Ondo APC

No fewer than 18 chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are vying for governorship in Ondo State, it was learnt yesterday. The governorship poll may hold in October.

Many of them have set up campaign structures across the 18 local governments, ahead of the shadow poll.

However, in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), four aspirants are said to be eyeing the ticket. They are for Presidential Adviser on Niger Delta Kingsley Kuku, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Eyitayo Jegege, Secretary to Government Dr. Adelola and former Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Olu Agunloye.

APC aspirants include former National Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and 2012 flag bearer of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), former university don Senator Ajayi Boroffice, former Finance Commissioner Senator Tayo Alasoadura, former House of Representatives member Hon. Ife Abegunde, former Speaker of House of Assembly Hon. Victor Olabimtan, Mr. Foluso Adefemi, and Lagos-based businessman Odunayo Akinrinsola.

Others are former Special Duties Commissioner  Hon. Niran Sule Akinsuyi, eminent banker Chief Jamiu Ekungba, former PDP National Legal Adviser Chief Olusola Oke, former running mate to Akeredolu, Dr. Paul Akintelure and former Commissioner for Education and Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s close associate Olakunle Osunyikanmi.

Also in the race are businessman and cleric Dr. Segun Abraham, foremost rights activist Dr. Tunji Abayomi, House of Representatives member founder of Achievers’ University Dr. Bode Ayorinde, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, former Chairman of the ACN Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose and a lawyer, Mr. Sola Iji.

A party source said: “Many chieftains are likely to join the list. There are also some PDP chieftains who are still going to defect to the APC so that they can vie for the seat. I agree that it may be a crowded race.”

The contenders cut across the three senatorial districts, underscoring the fact that the APC may not officially zone the slot to any district.

But, APC stakeholders in Akoko have not relented in their agitation for power shift, claiming that it is consistent with the principles of equity, justice and fairplay.

Akeredolu, Ayorinde, Anifowose and Ekungba are from Owo axis of the Ondo North Senatorial District. From the Akoko axis of the district are Akinsuyi, who is said to enjoy the backing of the party leader and former deputy governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, Prof. Boroffice, and Dr. Abraham.

Aspirants from the Central District are Alasoadura and Abegunde, who are from Akure North and South local governments, and Akinyelure, who hails from Idanre.

The Ondo South aspirants are Iji, Oke, and Akintelure.

Ayorinde, who represents Owo Constituency in the House of Representatives, said he has formalised his declaration plan, adding that he will not step down from the race.

The aspirant described himself as a popular politician, saying: “My personality will ensure victory for me at the primary and general elections.”

Ayorinde added: “I have expressed my interest by writing to the party at the various levels of leadership. Since August, last year, I have notified the State Executive Committee. I have visited the local governments and wards. I have also informed the people through my press conference at Akure, the state capital, that I am running. I have what it takes to govern Ondo State.”

Akinrinsola told reporters in Lagos that efforts should be made to halt the PDP’s hegemony by installing a progressive administration in the state.

During his visit to a party elder, Chief Bisi Akande, in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, he said: “I am in the race to make a point. The point I want to make is that good governance is possible in Ondo State. I will make use of the human and natural endowment of the state to run a truly progressive, accountable and prudent administration.”

Abraham, who spoke with our correspondent in Lagos, said a competent candidate will win victory for the APC in Ondo State during the election.

He described himself as the best man for the job, urging party members to team up with him to take the state to a higher level.

Stressing that the days of the PDP are numbered in the state, he added: “The PDP is dead in Ondo State. It only needs to be buried. The PDP is in comatose. People are leaving the PDP for the APC. The former deputy governor is now in the APC. Commissioners, special advisers, forger governorship aspirants are defecting. What remains is the carcass. People are leaving the PDP in droves.”

  • APC ‘ll conduct credible primary in Ondo, says Akande

APC ‘ll conduct credible primary in Ondo, says Akande

Elder statesman and former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Bisi Akande has said that the party will hold a free and fair primary for governorship aspirants in Ondo State.

He charged the aspirants to build a virile chapter and avoid any action that could breed strife and rancour as they prepare for the governorship poll.

Akande reminded the contestants that the party is bigger than the ambition of individual aspirants, urging them to elevate its interest  over and above particularistic agenda.

The eminent politician gave the advice when one of the aspirants,  Odunayo Akinrinsola-Oyewole, visited him at his home town, Ila-Orangun, Osun State.

The aspirant informed the party elder that he joined the race because he has what it takes to govern the state as a progressive politician.

He paid tribute to Akande, who he described as a role model and mentor to many politicians in the country.

Akande said the party will provide a level playing field for aspirants, adding that delegates will choose a candidate of their choice.

No fewer than 15 governorship aspirants are warming up for the shadow poll. They include Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, Hon. Niran Sule-Akinsuyi, Hon. Victor Olabimtan, Dr. Segun Abraham, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, Dr. Paul Akinterinwa, Dr. Ayodele Akinyelure, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, Hon. Ife Abegunde, Chief Olusola Oke, and  Akinrinsola Oyewole.

  • Ondo promises jobs for youths

    Ondo promises jobs for youths

The Ondo State government has promised more jobs for its unemployed youths.

Commissioner for Information Kayode Akinmade said yesterday that the government’s revolution in the agricultural sector will reduce youth unemployment.

He said in the government’s cocoa revolution drive, a modern factory that would utilise and process premium quality cocoa beans produced in the state would begin production of chocolate bars by April.

The commissioner added that the factory would utilise the facilities of the Cocoa Catalytic Factory in Idanre.

Akinmade said the factory would be run by the state’s Cocoa project’ foreign technical partner, Spagnvola Chocolatier of Spain, and would have the capacity to produce enough for local consumption and export.

He said the government desires to strengthen relationship with the European Union (EU) to provide international market for the commodities.

According to him,  plans are on to ensure that cocoa products in the state gain commodity pricing and value at the Stock Exchange.

Akinmade added that group-farmers would get stock brokers and market their products in the stock exchange.

The commissioner said the administration’s goal is to process and brand its cocoa in a globally acceptable way that will, in turn, produce  internationally worthy, hygienic, nourishing and outstanding chocolate.

With the government’s  partnership  with an internationally recognised chocolate producing company , he said  a lot of value would be added to the state’s interest.

“With the development, the state  will soon be recognised globally in its cocoa revolution and will in turn assist in repositioning Nigeria to its position in cocoa production among comity of nations,” Akinmade said.

  • APC enlarges coast in Ondo

    APC enlarges coast in Ondo

Ahead of next year’s governorship poll in Ondo State, prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains and associates of Governor Olusegun Mimiko have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). What does this portends for the ruling party? EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the politics of defection and how the two parties are warning up for the election.

    •Mimiko’s associates desert PDP

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko will bow out of office next year. Ahead of the governorship poll, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) gladiators have returned to the drawing board. The two parties are on the popularity weighing scale. Will the PDP retain power in the Sunshine State? Will the APC pull the rug off the feet of the ruling party?

Recent events in the state may be a pointer to what is likely to happen during the election. The ruling party is going through a moment of storm and stress. Prominent chieftains and associates of the governor are deserting the party. However, the APC is also grappling with crisis. Its governorship aspirants are erecting personal structures for the actualisation of their governorship dreams, instead of collectively building the party. Since many people expect power to shift from the PDP to the opposition party, there is mass defection to the APC. Sources said that, apart from Eyitayo Jegde, who is said to be eyeing the governorship in the PDP, party members are waiting for the governor’s directive on the way forward. To that extent, there is a sort of imaginary cohesion in the ruling party. But, in the APC, it is a rancorous race. The aspirants include Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, Hon. Segun Abraham, former House of Representatives member Hon. Ife Abegunde, former Speaker of House of Assembly hon. Victor Olabimtan, Foluso Adefemi, Oyewole Akinrinsola,  Hon. Niran Sule Akinsuyi, Chief Jamiu Ekungba, Chief Olusola Oke, Dr. Paul Akintelure and Olakunle Osunyikanmi.

The PDP’s rank has been depleted, following the defection of Dr. Osunyikanmi, former Commissioner for Education and Director-General of the Technical Aids Corps (TAC) and Senator Ayo Akinyelure, who represented the Ondo Central District, to the APC. Party insiders believe that their defection is a blow to the governor. The two politicians were the main pillars of the old Labour Party (LP) in their respective local councils. Osunyikanmi is from Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo while Akinyelure is from Idanre.

Their defection trailed the exit of former Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi,  Chief Segun Ojo, one-time Commissioner for Finance, and former Special Duties Commissioner Hon. Niran Sule-Akinsuyo from Mimiko’s camp.

    In 2007,

Mimiko had leaned on the LP to defeat the PDP government of the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu. But, last year, he left the party for the PDP.

According to PDP stakeholders, the defection of Osunyikanmi, who is a close associate of the governor, is generating ripples. Many see him as an asset to the PDP. The former Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Foreign Affairs left the party with some members of the governor’s inner caucus.

A PDP chieftain, who expressed concern over the storm in the party, said: “I don’t know how we are going to cope with the expected mass defection that is most likely to follow this development. Even, some of our prominent leaders are planning to leave the party because of this. It is unfortunate that the mismanagement of success has made us to lose face in the public arena. But, we are going to control the fallouts of this, especially as it concerns Osunyikanmi, one of our strongest leaders.”

However, to some PDP leaders, the defection was in bad faith. “It is a manifestation of disloyalty in the party. Their departure will not affect the fortune of the PDP during the election,” said a chieftain.

Akinyelure and Osunyikanmi gave reasons for defecting to the APC. They said they were responding to the people’s yearning for change under the Buhari administration, adding that the APC is the only vehicle of that change.

In a joint statement titled: “Our Journey of Change Begins, “ they repudiated the PDP, saying that it cannot take Ondo State to a prosperous future. They added: “We are most delighted to announce our formal declaration for the All Progressives Congress, APC in Ondo State. This declaration, which has ignited the fire of passionate endorsements across the state, followed our historic disengagement from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

“Our decision was taken after several months of wide consultations with our esteemed leaders, constructive constituents, fervent followers and very distinguished admirers from the length and breadth of Ondo State.

“The mood in Ondo State, as clearly expressed in the last general election, shows that the people truly want a change. In spite of the fact that we have a PDP government in the state, our people voted massively for President Mohammadu Buhari of the APC. That situation has not changed. In fact, the calls for total change at all levels of governance in the state are getting more stringent due to the failure of the PDP-led state government to deliver democracy dividends to the people.

“As progressive politicians with track records in people’s welfare and empowerment, we cannot but identify with a political platform that is poised to change Nigeria for good. Therefore, our decision to align with other genuine progressives in the APC is hinged on the need to engender good governance in our state, put the state in the mainstream of national politics and foster regional integration which has long been frustrated by the current selfish and egocentric leadership in Ondo State.

As the Director-General of the Directorate of Technical Aids Corps (TAC), an agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of providing manpower assistance for developing ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) countries by recruiting qualified Nigerians and posting them to those countries, Osunyikanmi has used that position to engage a lot of young people from Ondo State.

In 1999, he was the Personal Assistant to Mimiko, the then Commissioner for Health under the Adefarati administration. When Mimiko became the Secretary to Government under Agagu administration, and later, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, he retained his position as Personal Assistant. In the days of tribulation when Mimiko was struggling to retrieve his stolen mandate, he was a pillar of support. The governor appointed him as Special Adviser on Multi-lateral Agencies, and later, Commissioner for Education.

A grassroots politician, since his foray into politics, Osunyikanmi has not lost any election in Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo axis. He said he parted ways with Mimiko ‘on matters of principle,” adding that the administration has not justified the confidence reposed in it by the people.

The APC is also enlarging its coast in Idanre, the home town of Senator Akinyelure, a chartered accountant, tax practitioner and grassroots politician. He alleged that he was lured into the PDP. He also alleged that the governor has been playing a politics of exclusion. Urging his people to shine their eyes, he said the governor has derailed from the original vision that made him popular. “People were hailing the governor as iroko. That was yesterday. but, today, there is nothing like iroko again because they are not happy with him. I told him to reconcile with the people, but he never headed my advice,” he said.

Akinsuyi also said that he parted ways with Mimiko on a point of principle. “I have been a progressive politician throughout. We were together in the AD. We were together in the LP. But, there is no way I can go back to the PDP with him,” he told reporters in Lagos.

The major defectors, apart from Olanusi, have one thing in common. They are itching to succeed Mimiko in next year’s election. The challenge fo the APC is how to manage success and prevent the damage that can be done to the platform by the conflicts of ambitions.

Security operatives searching for killers of Ondo varsity student

The Department of State Security Services (DSS) has launched a manhunt for the suspected killers  of Olumuyiwa Ewarawon, a 400 Level Psychology student of the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU), Akungba Akoko, Ondo State .

Ewarawon is believed to have been killed by members of the Cadet Corps, a paramilitary organisation.

Three weeks ago, there was commotion at the school, when a commander of the Cadet Corps, Adedoyin Adeola, a student described as “spillover student” led some gangsters to Ewarawon’s hostel, where he was allegedly beaten to a coma.

A student said: “Ewarawon was sleeping when Adedoyin, known as Iron body, led his gang of Cadet Corps members into Shanghai Villa (a private hostel) and asked for Oluwamuyiwa’s room.

“The next thing we heard was banging on the door. The culprits forcefully entered the room and beat the victim until blood started gushing out of his body.

“After the incident, Adedoyin escaped. His parents who live in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government have also fled their home.”

Another student said: “After the beating, Olumuyiwa was rushed to the Iwaro General Hospital.

“His condition worsened and the doctor on duty advised that he should be transferred to another hospital.

“He was taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Oyo State, where he died.”

The news of Ewarawon’s death went viral on social media and has generated lots of controversy in the university community.

Several students recalled that the Cadet Corps once threatened the deceased during a show organised by the university.

The university management has declared Adedoyin wanted.

The Dean, Students Affairs, Bolanle Ogungbamila, said the Cadet Corps would be banned, until the university management investigates the incident.

He said: “The organisation (Cadet Corps) will remain banned while the university management investigates the situation.

“We are on top of the situation and we have advised our students not to take the law in their hands.

“They should remain calm, until the school investigates the matter.”

In a statement, the Student Union Government (SUG) urged Adedoyin to surrender to the police.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, has suspensed all para-military organisations on campus.

He set up a three-man investigation panel to unravel the cause of the incident.

A statement by the Registrar, Bamidele Olotu, said: “In view of the recent activities of para-military organisations that led to the death of a student outside the campus, the VC has suspended the activities of all para-military organisations in the university.

“A three-man investigation panel has been constituted to look into the matter.”

  • Why I want to govern Ondo, by Abraham

Why I want to govern Ondo, by Abraham

Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Dr. Segun Abraham spoke with Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU on his ambition, the challenges facing the party and preparations for next year’s poll.

what are the challenges facing the Ondo APC, ahead of next year’s governorship election?

Like any insitution, there are challenges. The challenge is to ensure that all the interest groups unite to avoid division. This is common to al political parties. In any institution or organisation, there sre diverse interests. They need to be protected. We are now solving the problem, using the experience of the last election to resolve it and we are making progress.

There is the feeling that the activities of APC aspirants in Ondo State are also polarising the party. What is your reaction?

The opposite is the answer. The more you have the aspirants, the more activities you have in the party. It becomes more exciting. More people are involved. A lot of people are coming out with different ideas, vision and programmes. On the ecomomic aspect of it, there will be boom in the economy of the state. Printers will be busy. People will be more engaged in political activities. It increases the awareness of the people politically. There are some of these aspirants who just want to be known. They are not spending money. They may be using it to negotiate for other positions. These are nice political activities. We also had rumours that some of them may be moles for other political parties. The party exco is aware of these activities in the party and they are very experienced. Since they know the intention of some of the candidates, it is easy to know those candidates that are serious, competent and fit to be the governor of the state. They know the candidates that are qualified to contest and the governor will emerge from among them.

Is it not confounding to you that some of these aspirants are building personal structures, instead of building the party?

Well, what you refer to as personal structures are groups, which must be integrated into the party .All over the world, there are interest groups that must be formed. The only thing is that the leadership of the groups must subject the interest of the groups to the interest of the party and that is in conformity with the principles of democracy. The lesson we have learned is that we must not sacrifice the interest of the society or the party at the altar of the group. At our level, we build the party politically, socially, pyschologically and financially, in all ramifications. That is why our group is called the Unity Forum.  It is the only group in the state that is reaching out the other groups so that we can have a unity front to drive away the PDP government from the state. The leader of the Unity Group is the only person that has n grouse against any other group, but I have been organising other groups for unity. This can be described as the bride without spot as quoted by the holy book. None of the groups have anything against our groups. Therefore, they all find it easy to work with us. That is why the Unity Forum is growing fast and rapidly.

What are the lessons you learned from your participation at the contest in 2012?

The first lesson I learnt was that our people may not be rich, but they are people of integrity and very intelligent. Based on my integrity and the services I had rendered in the past, they rallied round me because they wanted me to be their governor. I discovered that people will like you when you have compassion; when you are ho9nest, truthful transparent and concerned about their welfare without what you will gain from them; or without any attachment of personal interest to your pursuits. You can imagine a woman of 80 years distributing my leaflets in the local governments. old men campaigning for me because they have seen the works of my hands in the past. Imagine the physically challenged holding meetings and campaigning with all their desirabilities. Imagine the students spending their money to campaign for me in the neighbourhood. Al These gave me the practical lessons that we are to live here and serve God and humanity alone. As a matter of fact, it is a revelation that, when you say love God, it will reflect on the love you have for the people. This shows that in all vocations, professions, and that in that vocation, in that relationship, we are ministers of God. Our work is an act of service to God. All the leaders should realise this. This should be a good lesson to all human beings who want to have good relationship with God and mankind. Our good character can only manifest in our work and service to humanity.

How far is it true that some stakeholders are mounting pressure on you to join the governorship race?

During the last primary when I was not picked by the leadership of the party, the people of Ondo State were utterly disappointed. Some of them had heart attack and they were rushed to the hospital. Some people were wailing as if they were bereaved; as if they lost people. Others could not manage the disappointment and they moved to another party. Others refused to vote. About the two third of the party left. Some went to the PDP. Others went to the Labour Party (LP). Some were passive. I did not know the extent o their love for me, until all these things happened. Despite my efforts to persuade them, some could not be consoled. Some resigned to fate. After the election, I returned to what I wanted to do in the last three years. I scaled down on my business, went to the university to do Christian Studies and Theology. I wanted to know more about God. I wanted to become a missionary. This gives me fulfillment. Because of the love my people have for me and I have for them, the people were still in contact with me and I am in contact with them. While away, I was doing the right thing to  the party, instead of building self-interest group. This can be seen in the record of my contribution to the party. These people felt that they needed somebody who they can trust’ who has been providing leadership, who has the economic fortune and capability to turn around the state. They were looking for a virtuous, conscientious leader, somebody who has international connection that can bring investment, leader who has the fear of God and integrity, leader who has a vision and mission. They were fed up with the government of deceit; people who are not accountable, people who cannot protect their interest, people who are after power for selfish interest, people who lack the know-how. That is the reason why they are making a clarion call for me to come and serve. In the last three years, they have been calling on me to remember that I have a duty to perform for them. I have searched and investigated and found out that over 95 percent of the people genuinely want me to come and serve them. They are desirous of change. We are in the era of change mantra, I have made up my mind. I have discovered that my service will be incomplete, until we have a state that will take care of all categories of people and also assist people in the areas of their life.

What do you want to do differently, if elected as governor?

First and foremost, we will work hard to restore our lost virtue and value. We will develop technological and managerial capability in order to harness our various resources, with little dependence on foreigners. We will develop organic food that is now the new paradigm shift in economic returns, apart from IT, so that Ondo State can become the hub for organic food globally. We will avail them of various opportunities offered by our international connections, from African Pacific Funding and Management and other multi-lateral institutions. Ministries of Industry, Trade and Investment will be established, with offices in Europe, America and Asia. This will increase our international profile, export drive and employment generation. We should be able to generate about 500,000 employment through this drive. We will set up Government Demand Industry (GDI). Through this, a lot of industries will be set up to complement the major industry that will support the government policies and programmes. For example, if we are rehabilitating schools, industries will be set up to provide roofing sheets and other education infrastructure. We are going to set up People Demand Industry (PDI). Right now, 80 percent of what our people need are brought in from outside. We will set up small scale industries along under PPP. We will provide part of funding, training and good and services depot that will supply the populace at a very reduce rate so that they can have economic value on their income. We will integrate our secondary schools with international schools through the World wide libraries.

What is your position on the agitation for power shift by the people of Akure and Akoko?

The agitations for power shift in Ondo State are legitimate. Our party, the APC, will promote equity, fairness and justice.

What is the assurance that you will beat other aspirants during the primary?

My good work will speak for me. With God’s support and my work speaking for me and the people that God will use, my victory at the primary is assured.

What gives the APC the boldness that it can sack the PDP from Ondo State?

The PDP is dead in Ondo State. It only needs to be buried. The PDP is in comatose. People are leaving the PDP for the APC. The former deputy governor is now in the APC. Commissioners, special advisers, forger governorship aspirants are defecting. What remains is the carcass. People are leaving the PDP in droves.

What are the lessons you learned from your participation at the contest in 2012?

The first lesson I learnt was that our people may not be rich, but they are people of integrity and very intelligent. Based on my integrity and the services I had rendered in the past, they rallied round me because they wanted me to be their governor. I discovered that people will like you when you have compassion; when you are honest, truthful transparent and concerned about their welfare without what you will gain from them; or without any attachment of personal interest to your pursuits.
