BoT member calls for unity in Ondo APC

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Board of Trustees (BOT), representing Ondo State, Chief Jamiu Ekungba, has appealed to members of the party not to allow divisions to thwart the chances of the party in winning next year’s governorship  election in the state.

Ekungba made the appeal in Owo, while briefing party stakeholders about the outcome of his reconciliation tour of the state.

Ekungba, who is a governorship aspirant, said he was being directed by national leaders of the party to unite members, so that the party would not go into the election as a divided house.

The APC leader said party members should sheathe  their swords, saying the coming elections is as important as that of 2012, which the party lost to Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

He noted that since Mimiko is aware of President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war, he would do everything possible to prevent the APC from taking over the state.

He said Mimiko will use all what he has to ensure that his candidate wins the election, to cover up the alleged mismanagement of funds by his administration.

He said Mimiko will use all what he has to ensure that his candidate wins the election, to cover up the alleged mismanagement of funds by his administration.

He said: “When Prof. Aderonmu was giving his speech few minutes ago, he said by the time Mimiko will be leaving office, Ondo State debt would have risen to N200billion. With this, Mimiko will like to take the coming election so serious to ensure that his candidate emerged winner, in order to cover up his illegal deals.

“The defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was united prior to the 2012 election, but it nevertheless lost. Though some aspirants left the fold with their followers, the party remained united.

“Now we are facing another battle. Our leaders believe that we will fail if we are not united in Ondo APC.

“We must take over Ondo State; not for anything but for the sake of the unity and integration of the Southwest.

“The truth of the matter is this, the era of oil boom is gone and it time for every geographical zones to seat down and do a research on how to develop their economy, so as to empower their citizens. Otherwise, there will be crisis in the land.

  • Ondo APC files appeal

    Ondo APC files appeal

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has filed appeals challenging the judgments of the Election Petitions Tribunal on the House of Assembly elections.

Four cases were filed yesterday before the Court of Appeal by its counsel, Charles Titiloye.

They are for Akure I where the APC candidate, Festus Aregbesola, is asking the court to declare him winner.

APC is also contesting the Ilaje I and II elections.

Titiloye noted that despite the evidence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and the returning officers that the elections were marred with irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, the Tribunal failed to cancel the controversial polls.

He prayed the court to order fresh and credible election in the two constituencies.

In Idanre, Titiloye called for supplementary election in 23 polling units where there were non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

  • Ondo APC rejects N7b loan

    Ondo APC rejects N7b loan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has decried a statement by Governor Olusegun Mimiko justifying his latest loan procurement.

The governor was quoted as saying that part of the reasons his administration took a new N7 billion loan was to enable it conduct the local government elections next year.

But the APC through its spokesman, Steve Otaloro, said: “It is worrisome for an administration which met over N38billion in the treasury in 2009 to say it is borrowing to conduct local government elections.

“In 2011, this same administration announced that it will create new local governments and conduct elections.

“It also set up a state wide creation committee, which expended about N600 million taxpayers’ money on the jamboree.

“Of great concern to our party is the increasing and continuous recourse to loans and sale of state assets.

“It is common sense knowledge that when loans are procured on behalf of a state or nation, such loans are tied to capital projects and development.

“In six years, the Mimiko administration has borrowed to finance projects, such as the Arigidi Tomato Industry (nonexistent), the expansion of the Oba Adesida-Oyemekun road (not expanded), the infamous Dome Project (non completed but awarded and re-awarded three times), the Ifon Ceramic Industry (nonexistent), Oba-Ile-Akure Airport road (not completed) and many more undelivered projects.

“We appeal to the people to remember that our value system rewards and celebrate the pious, righteous and diligent and  it is anathema to our culture, custom, tradition and beliefs to permit evil to reign in our land.”

    •Minister: my visit private

A members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have berated the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Prof. Claudius Daramola, for his absence at a meeting at the party secretariat in Akure, the state capital.

Party leaders and members, who arrived the secretariat on Oba Adesida/Oyemekun Road as early as 8am, waited till 4pm before leaving.

It was gathered that this was Daramola’s third time of no-show meetings with APC leaders.

Though, the Chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, was not at the secretariat but it was learnt that he has directed his deputy, Ade Adetimehin and others executive members to receive the minister, who was to arrive at 11am

A party member said Daramola arrived in the state capital at 6:30pm.

“I saw him at one of the party leaders’ house on Stadium Road at 8pm. I was also told that he visited some other APC leaders in Akure before travelling to his home town Ode-Aye in Okitipupa Local Government.”

Another source, Igbekele Olayiwola, said: “The minister was expected to meet APC members but we are disappointed that he did not show up.

The party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, apologised to reporters who were there to cover the event.

But Daramola denied shunning the meeting. The minister, who spoke through one of his aides, Dr. Segun Ayodele, said his visit to the state was private.

He said he holds the party members in high esteem.

Daramola said he was in the state to visit the Halu of Ode-Aye, adding that he was also at Odigbo before returning to Abuja on the same day.

  • Fed Govt to build 150 housing units in Ondo

As part of efforts in making houses avoidable for Nigerians, the Federal Government has commenced the construction of 150 units of two and three-bedroom flats in Akure, the Ondo State capital. The project, which is being handled by Meadville Building and Construction Company, is expected to be completed within the next three months.

Speaking during the inauguration of the programme, the State Controller of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Mrs. Mojisola Gbadebo, advised interested members of the public to key into the National Housing Fund Scheme.

Gbadebo said this would enable them to benefit in the acquisition of the buildings as soon as they are completed.

She further explained that the project was being sponsored by the bank in collaboration with the Federal Housing Authority Homes under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Lands and Housing.

According to her, a prospective buyer who must be a contributor to the housing fund stands the chance of accessing the loan from the bank with six per cent interest rate with 30 years repayment period.

She noted that the amount to charge the contributor depends on his or her income and age, adding that loan is not exclusively for salary earners but all income earners from the age of 18 years.

Ondo 2016: List of APC aspirants swells

The list of aspirants for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the race to succeed Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko is swelling by the day. Some of the new aspirants, according to sources, include Dr. Olusegun Abraham, a former aspirant in the now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Abraham is joining an already crowded field comprising of other tested politicians like Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olusola Oke, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu and state chairman of the party, Isaac Kekemeke, to mention but a few.

  • ‘PDP can’t retain power in Ondo’

‘PDP can’t retain power in Ondo’

Omooba Abayomi Adesanya is the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State. He spoke with DAMISI OJO on preparations for next year’s governorship elections and others partisan issues.

What are the challenges confronting the APC in Ondo State?

Constructive criticism and objectivity are our watchword in the APC. The task of being the party’s spokesman in Ondo State, as an opposition political party, is enormous and very challenging, because of the maladministration of the Mimiko-led government in the state. There are so many ills of the government that need our attention and that of the public. The present government has deceived the people with a lot of failed promises and programmes; with directionless and clueless policies. More importantly, our people were hoodwinked and bought over with cash, ranging from between N2,000 to N5,000 during the April 11, 2015 House of Assembly elections. This attitude of the people must change. We need to re-orientate and change their psyche, reactivate their consciousness and educate them on the power of their votes.

So, being in the opposition is tasking, especially when the government in power is under-performing. My team and I are proactive and have been forced to be on internet almost all the time, reading through pages of newspapers everyday, monitoring all government policies and reaching out to the grassroots. For sure, the feedbacks indicate that the people are reacting positively to our criticisms.

The governorship election is scheduled for next year. How prepared is your party?

Our strategy is simple: The people; the electorate. As a party, we do not have any other plan or strategy outside and beyond the people of Ondo State, both at home and in diaspora. They have been misruled and misled all this while by the present Mimiko-led PDP administration. The good people of Ondo State are now yearning for change. Mind you, their votes have started counting since the 2015 general elections, thereby making rigging unfashionable. Once again, our strategy centres on the people of the state. Thanks to the ‘almighty Card Readers’

Is the APC on ground in Ondo State, going by dismal outing during the April 11 House of Assembly poll?

We are on ground. Let me tell you — and you even know better than I do — that the APC is a party to beat in this state. With the numerical strength of our membership of over 400,000 and still counting, we are battle ready to defeat and beat the PDP blue and black come 2016 governorship election. I remembered when we held the second APC State Publicity Secretaries Summit hosted by Lagos  State Chapter, from March 18 to 20, 2015; prior to the 2015 presidential elections. It was titled “Ready For Change”. A Professor of Political Science from the University of Lagos, delivered the keynote address. With statistics, he rated Ondo State political parties as follows: APC 20 per cent; PDP 70 per cent; others 10 per cent, but I quickly disagreed with him and told the gathering that, the Ondo State APC garnered between 60 per cent and 75 per cent votes for Buhari during the presidential election.

You were aware of the boasting and bragging of the PDP Southwest Coordinator for Goodluck Jonathan 2015 Presidential Campaign, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, that he will return one million votes for Jonathan in Ondo State. Probably that was the yardstick the Professor used and because Mimiko is a sitting governor, the Professor must have put this into consideration when ceding the state to the PDP. But, what happened? The PDP was defeated disgracefully in the state. Not only that, Mimiko was beaten in his polling unit and ward; he couldn’t wait for the votes to be counted, before he drove off with his entourage.

The April 11 House of Assembly election was a charade, characterised with violence, intimidation, killing, snatching of election materials, especially in South and Central senatorial districts of the state. The situation was so bad that a first class Oba in Ondo South was fingered in the case of hijack of election materials.

You always describe the Mimiko administration as non-performing. What do you think the APC has in stock to change the tempo, if it comes to power?

My criticism of this administration has been constructive and issue-based. Exposing the ills and anti-people policies of Mimiko’s government. He runs the state like an emperor and with deceit. Our governor has failed in all his electoral promises. His regime has been a dark period in the history of Ondo State. Nothing is working. Ondo State has about 11 state-owned industries or more, but today none is working. Oluwa Glass Factory, Igbokoda, with 5,000 workforce is moribund, Okitipupa Oil Palm Plantation with about 1,600 staff strength is dysfunctional, Owena Mass Transit is in extinction, Ifon Ceramics is history, the state Forest Reserve (afforestation) has been deforestated, Owena Dam and the water cooperation that usually supply pipe-borne water to every home in the state is now a dream. The ever functional General and Specialist Hospitals, Clinics and Maternity Homes built in all the villages and towns across the state now exist in the imagination, Bolorunduro Timbre is gone, to mention but a few.

All these we are going to resuscitate and bring back to life when we get to power. Resuscitating them will create thousands of jobs opportunities to our teaming jobless youths. The APC government in Ondo State will build confidence and hope for the people. We are also targeting between 300 and 500 kilometres of roads in each of the 18 local government areas of the state, to open up the rural areas. We will also abide by our party’s manifesto to the letter.

What is missing in Ondo APC?

Every political party has peculiar make-up and challenges. Our dear country, Nigeria, has been faced with leadership challenges that has burrowed deep into the marrows of all spheres and departments of our lives. This leadership brouhaha has really affected every home; that is, the component units of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and as an entity. But, with Muhammadu Buhari as President, things are taking shape now.

The APC in Ondo State needs a more formidable and collective leadership than ever. A sincere leadership fulcrum and pivot with political patronages now that we are going into another governorship election. We cannot afford to disappoint our teaming supporters and sympathisers that are clamouring for change, because of selfish and petty issues. The people see us as the last hope; an alternative to the PDP.

The electorates are tired of the wasteful government of deceit that has held our state for ransom since it came on board in 2009.
