  • Ondo to begin CPS with 18% contribution increase

Ondo State is set to begin the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) with 18 per cent pension contribution increase, Director-General, Ondo State Pension Commission, Jayeola Olowosuko has said.

Olowosuko made this known in an interview with The Nation in Lagos.

According to him, the state has set October as the month when deduction of monthly contribution will commence.

He explained that the state had partly joined the scheme as it has been deducting and remitting monthly contributions of its employees of 2014.

He said the state was not able to implement the scheme before now due to economic challenges, adding that the Pension Reform Act (PRA) 2014, which repealed the PRA 2004 was also promulgated when the economy had issues.

He added that it became necessary for the state to plan how to join the scheme in phases so that workers are not put in financial crisis.

He said that overtime, the state has been owing staff and has been paying salaries in arrears.

He noted that the problems of nonpayment of salaries has come to an end as the state has just paid September salaries in October.

He said: “The new pension law was promulgated when the economy had issues and so we had issues implementing the scheme fully. Workers already had financial pressures and we didn’t want to put them through any financial crisis.

“We have however been sensitising them on the scheme. Presently, things are getting back to normal and they are now ready to join the scheme.

“We have therefore, pegged October date as when we will begin deductions from their salaries while we also remit same to their chosen Pension Fund Administrators”, he added.

The government enjoined the people to pray for the missing victims.

He said there would be a special Jumat service in memory of the departed at the Akure Central Mosque on Friday while prayer sessions will hold simultaneously in all mosques across the state.

  • ‘PDP can’t retain power in Ondo’

‘PDP can’t retain power in Ondo’

Omooba Abayomi Adesanya is the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State. He spoke with DAMISI OJO on preparations for next year’s governorship elections and others partisan issues.

What are the challenges confronting the APC in Ondo State?

Constructive criticism and objectivity are our watchword in the APC. The task of being the party’s spokesman in Ondo State, as an opposition political party, is enormous and very challenging, because of the maladministration of the Mimiko-led government in the state. There are so many ills of the government that need our attention and that of the public. The present government has deceived the people with a lot of failed promises and programmes; with directionless and clueless policies. More importantly, our people were hoodwinked and bought over with cash, ranging from between N2,000 to N5,000 during the April 11, 2015 House of Assembly elections. This attitude of the people must change. We need to re-orientate and change their psyche, reactivate their consciousness and educate them on the power of their votes.

So, being in the opposition is tasking, especially when the government in power is under-performing. My team and I are proactive and have been forced to be on internet almost all the time, reading through pages of newspapers everyday, monitoring all government policies and reaching out to the grassroots. For sure, the feedbacks indicate that the people are reacting positively to our criticisms.

The governorship election is scheduled for next year. How prepared is your party?

Our strategy is simple: The people; the electorate. As a party, we do not have any other plan or strategy outside and beyond the people of Ondo State, both at home and in diaspora. They have been misruled and misled all this while by the present Mimiko-led PDP administration. The good people of Ondo State are now yearning for change. Mind you, their votes have started counting since the 2015 general elections, thereby making rigging unfashionable. Once again, our strategy centres on the people of the state. Thanks to the ‘almighty Card Readers’

Is the APC on ground in Ondo State, going by dismal outing during the April 11 House of Assembly poll?

We are on ground. Let me tell you — and you even know better than I do — that the APC is a party to beat in this state. With the numerical strength of our membership of over 400,000 and still counting, we are battle ready to defeat and beat the PDP blue and black come 2016 governorship election. I remembered when we held the second APC State Publicity Secretaries Summit hosted by Lagos  State Chapter, from March 18 to 20, 2015; prior to the 2015 presidential elections. It was titled “Ready For Change”. A Professor of Political Science from the University of Lagos, delivered the keynote address. With statistics, he rated Ondo State political parties as follows: APC 20 per cent; PDP 70 per cent; others 10 per cent, but I quickly disagreed with him and told the gathering that, the Ondo State APC garnered between 60 per cent and 75 per cent votes for Buhari during the presidential election.

You were aware of the boasting and bragging of the PDP Southwest Coordinator for Goodluck Jonathan 2015 Presidential Campaign, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, that he will return one million votes for Jonathan in Ondo State. Probably that was the yardstick the Professor used and because Mimiko is a sitting governor, the Professor must have put this into consideration when ceding the state to the PDP. But, what happened? The PDP was defeated disgracefully in the state. Not only that, Mimiko was beaten in his polling unit and ward; he couldn’t wait for the votes to be counted, before he drove off with his entourage.

The April 11 House of Assembly election was a charade, characterised with violence, intimidation, killing, snatching of election materials, especially in South and Central senatorial districts of the state. The situation was so bad that a first class Oba in Ondo South was fingered in the case of hijack of election materials.

You always describe the Mimiko administration as non-performing. What do you think the APC has in stock to change the tempo, if it comes to power?

My criticism of this administration has been constructive and issue-based. Exposing the ills and anti-people policies of Mimiko’s government. He runs the state like an emperor and with deceit. Our governor has failed in all his electoral promises. His regime has been a dark period in the history of Ondo State. Nothing is working. Ondo State has about 11 state-owned industries or more, but today none is working. Oluwa Glass Factory, Igbokoda, with 5,000 workforce is moribund, Okitipupa Oil Palm Plantation with about 1,600 staff strength is dysfunctional, Owena Mass Transit is in extinction, Ifon Ceramics is history, the state Forest Reserve (afforestation) has been deforestated, Owena Dam and the water cooperation that usually supply pipe-borne water to every home in the state is now a dream. The ever functional General and Specialist Hospitals, Clinics and Maternity Homes built in all the villages and towns across the state now exist in the imagination, Bolorunduro Timbre is gone, to mention but a few.

All these we are going to resuscitate and bring back to life when we get to power. Resuscitating them will create thousands of jobs opportunities to our teaming jobless youths. The APC government in Ondo State will build confidence and hope for the people. We are also targeting between 300 and 500 kilometres of roads in each of the 18 local government areas of the state, to open up the rural areas. We will also abide by our party’s manifesto to the letter.

What is missing in Ondo APC?

Every political party has peculiar make-up and challenges. Our dear country, Nigeria, has been faced with leadership challenges that has burrowed deep into the marrows of all spheres and departments of our lives. This leadership brouhaha has really affected every home; that is, the component units of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and as an entity. But, with Muhammadu Buhari as President, things are taking shape now.

The APC in Ondo State needs a more formidable and collective leadership than ever. A sincere leadership fulcrum and pivot with political patronages now that we are going into another governorship election. We cannot afford to disappoint our teaming supporters and sympathisers that are clamouring for change, because of selfish and petty issues. The people see us as the last hope; an alternative to the PDP.

The electorates are tired of the wasteful government of deceit that has held our state for ransom since it came on board in 2009.

  • Ondo in slumber, says APC

    Ondo in slumber, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has described the Olusegun Mimiko administration as “slumbering”.

A statement by the Director of Publicity, Steve Otaloro, decried the unemployment, non-payment of salaries and growing crime rate in the state.

The party lamented the frittering away of opportunities that should have positioned the state as an industrial giant and a regional economic champion capable of meeting its primary obligations.

“We noted the fanfare with which the government celebrated the arrival of Shoprite, the popular South African grocer, into Akure. Although ostensibly a private business, we took particular note of how a state franchise, an iconic legacy in its own right, the Owena Motel, was sacrificed for the South African franchise to thrive.

“As a party, we are happy that a standard grocer of Shoprite’s status is now in Akure. We are, however, appalled by certain decisions which heralded its arrival. Couldn’t Shoprite be established in Akure without messing up existing legacies?”

APC: we’re ready to take over Ondo

The  All Progressives Congress (APC) is ready to take over the Ondo State government, its Chairman,  Isaac Kekemeke, said yesterday.

Kekemeke said the APC would come out with a surprise in next year’s governorship election in the state.

The chairman spoke at the party’s secretariat during the inauguration of the Taiwo Malumi Hall at the APC state secretariat in Akure, the state capital.

He said the party would no longer make public its strategies, adding that it was a major mistake that led to the party’s abysmal performance in the April 11 House of Assembly election.

Kekemeke decried the “impoverishment of the people” by the Olusegun Mimiko-led administration.

He said the PDP government was taxing poverty, saying a reasonable government would create wealth for its citizens and tax the wealth accordingly.

The APC chairman accused Mimiko of spending over N1 trillion in six years without measurable development.

  • Ondo monarchs to ratify resolution

The Ondo State Council of Obas will, on Thursday, ratify the first class monarchs’ resolution scrapping the title of Eze Ndigbo, the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, has said.

Oba Aladetoyinbo spoke in his palace when the leadership of the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) under Chief Wale Oshun visited him.

The group was represented by the Ondo State State Chairman of ARG, Dr Bayo Ademodi and other executives.

The Akure monarch noted that the Igbo in Akure and their leaders  discovered they made a mistake when they realised the Yoruba were not happy at the insult given to the Deji by the dethroned Eze Ndigbo.

Oba Aladetoyinbo said Sir Gregory Ilehohika and his followers apologised. He praised the government for its supportive role which, according to him, played a major role in reducing the tension the squabble generated.

The ARG leader condemned the abduction of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Ademodi encouraged the monarch to abolish the title of Eze Ndigbo, which he conferred on Ilehohika.

  • 20 shops razed in Ondo

An early morning inferno yesterday destroyed 20 shops and goods valued at N10 million at the popular Ikare Junction, Owo in Ondo State.

Eyewitnesses said foodstuffs, motor parts and electronics were destroyed.

Sources said the fire, which started at 7am, was caused by power surge from one of the affected shops.

A trader, Frank Mbaga, said power supply in the area had been fluctuating for some days.

He said: “I think that was the cause of the incident. We informed officials of the Benin Electricity Development Company (BEDC) but they refused to show up.”

When The Nation visited the scene, hundreds of sympathisers were consoling the affected traders.

Another trader, Mrs. Rebecca Benson, said none of the victims could salvage any of their goods.

She said firemen did not respond to distress calls and urged the government to come to their aid.

Police spokesman Olufemi Joseph said he could not give details on what caused the fire.

“Our men, led by the DPO Owo, are on the scene and soon they will find out what caused the incident. But we should thank God that no life was lost,” he said.

Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested four suspects and impounded four trucks belonging to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) loaded with 135, 000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Omorawa Innocent, Pauline Osai, Osai Iyanu and Goodday Igybor drove the trucks, which had no valid loading documents, otherwise known as way bill.

The State Commandant, Adeyinka Fasui, told reporters that they were arrested on the Ore-Lagos Road.

Fasui said trucks with no valid loading documents carry  products from vandalised oil pipelines.

He noted that the command had begun its investigation.
