Oshiomhole urges community to set up water committee

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has urged residents of Ihievbe, in Owan East Local Government Area, to set up a water committee.

The governor said it was necessary for the people to maintain the facility his administration provided for them to enable them enjoy it for a long time.

Oshiomhole spoke at the inauguration of two industrial boreholes and a water treatment plant in the community.

The governor said his administration had sunk hundreds of industrial boreholes across the state.

He said the projects were in line with the policy of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that every human being, whether rich or poor, should have clean water.

Oshiomhole said: “Let me congratulate our people from Ihievbe. This is one of the two industrial boreholes we have installed, as well as the small mini-water treatment plant. The idea is to ensure that if this borehole produces water, it doesn’t need to go through additional processes.

“That is why the water treatment plant was also installed. So, the water you get from here will be a lot better than the so-called pure water that people hawk everywhere.”

He added: “My hope, wish and prayer is that with the availability of this clean water for the people of Ihievbe, all water-borne diseases and child labour, which children are subjected to when they go to the stream to fetch water – even sometimes competing for flood water with animals – the presence of this industrial borehole will make all that a thing of the past.

“I believe this is consistent with the current world consensus under the Millennium Development Goals that every human being is entitled to clean water, whether rich or poor. It is the business of government to deliver water.”

On his administration’s efforts to make life better for Edo State residents, Oshiomhole said: “The only thing I want to emphasise is that as you can see, we have not only sunk an industrial borehole, we have also put a giant reservoir. We have built a generator house; we have put a water treatment plant. So, this is complete mini-water works.

“But let me be honest with you. We have provided this; it is now owned by the people of this community. Like your personal property, please, maintain it. Remember that the generator is mechanical and it requires servicing. Also remember that the generator cannot work without diesel.

“We have sunk hundreds of boreholes across the state. It is not possible for Benin, the state capital, to bring diesel to run your generator. So, that is something between the community and the local government, the elders, the youths, the women and the religious

PDP to Oshiomhole: Your allegation on 8000 militants wild

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hit out yesterday at Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State for claiming that it registered 8,000 militants for the purpose of manipulating the forthcoming governorship polls in the state.

The PDP described the governor’s allegation as wild and totally unreasonable.

Spokesman for the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye in a statement in Abuja posed the following questions to Oshiomhole: Where and when did the PDP register the so-called militants?

“Were they registered by INEC?  If not which organisation registered them? Were they registered as voters or as observers?  For what purpose?  And when did Oshiomhole suddenly discover the registration of the alleged militants?”

Adeyeye hoped that the governor’s allegation would not be used to alter the voters’ register.

He added: “Nigerians will recall that it was the same Oshiomhole, who after returning from an official visit with President Buhari to the United States of America, said that one American official told them while they were in the United States that over six billion dollars was found in the account of a former Nigerian Minister.

“Neither the President nor any other member of the official delegation said they heard any such statement.”

Oshiomhole had on Friday told Police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris who visited him that the PDP registered the militants as part of plans to “make peaceful election impossible” when the people of Edo go to the polls to elect their next governor in two weeks time.

He said: “Our opponent, unable to find local thugs to help them perpetrate violence which they have done between 1999 and 2007 when I took over, resorted to liaising with my brothers in the sub-region, Delta and Rivers, in particular, to export criminals and militants into Edo State in order to make peaceful election impossible.

“They are exporting militants to Edo State to register so that with the PVC in their hands, they will appear to have the lawful basis to be present at the designated polling units where they are expected to unleash violence on election day.

“When I raised this alarm, I should expect naturally criminals are not as courageous as they seem. They denied that there was any such plan, but happily our ever vigilant, peace-loving electorate were able to apprehend some of these people from other states that came into Edo State for the purpose of this exercise.

“At least, 13 of them were handed over to the police. The IG may wish to establish what has happened to those people who were handed over. So, we handed them over to the police in line with what we were expected to do as civilised people.

“Having done that, we are clear that there are a lot of people, up to 8000 of them who are non-resident in Edo State, who are not indigenes of Edo State, who are indigenes and residents of Delta and Rivers states and some other states in the South-South, some from Bayelsa State who have registered for the sole purpose not to swell the votes, but to be present in various locations on election day.

State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, in a telephone chat said the allegation was baseless and an indictment of the security agencies for 8000 persons to move into the state without detection.

On the N2bn allegedly donated to the PDP campaign by some state governments, Chief Orbih said the party was ready to open its books for scrutiny.

He said: “The N2bn allegation is the highest level of turning truth upside down. What the governor is doing is spontaneous reaction to the people’s rejection of his policies.”

How PDP plans to rig Edo election – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has unveiled plot on how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) planned to rig the state governorship election rescheduled for September 28.

The governor disclosed that the PDP through some governors in the South-south planned to rig the election by registering 8,000 militants from their states for the poll.

Oshiomhole, who spoke while receiving the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Idris Ibrahim, at the Government House in Benin City, said the PDP opted for militants from other states because they couldn’t find any local thugs to help them perpetrate violence which they have done between 1999 and 2007.

He said the PDP resorted to liaising with his brothers (Governors) in the sub-region, Delta and Rivers, in particular, to export criminals and militants into Edo State in order to make peaceful election impossible.

The governor recalled how he first raised the alarm on the eve of the INEC Continuing Voters’ Registration exercise.

He explained that the militants registered in the state to have the lawful basis to be present at the designated polling units where they were expected to unleash violence on election day.

PDP accustomed to rigging – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is accustomed to rigging and can’t boast of a transparent election in other states in the South-South geopolitical zone.

He said Edo is the only state in the region that had been able to dismantle the PDP rigging machine and would do so again on the rescheduled date for the state’s gubernatorial election.

Speaking while receiving a team of European observers led by Ben Llewellyn-Jones, of the British High Commission, Abuja, at the Government House, Benin City, Friday, Oshiomhole said, “We do appreciate the interest of what I might call friends of Nigeria, those who help us to continually and continuously remember that although there are different nation states, but the world has increasingly become one small village such that events in any part can affect the whole. So, we do not underestimate the import of this election even as it is limited to Edo State.

“Edo State as we speak is the only state that can boast of a record of transparent elections since I came on board in 2007. Since I came, my campaign slogan was, we must dismantle the rigging machine.

“Having been a union member all my life, I couldn’t condone the situation where people are imposed at various levels, and our people gave up on democracy in this state, just like the rest of the South-South.”

“I am sure you have witnessed elections there and you can write volumes. They vote with bullets, not with ballots. Terror, not persuasion is the name of the game in the rest of the South-South. But since I came in, we have fought the forces behind rigging. We emboldened the people to challenge authorities, which is what I have done when I was in labour. And even as they still rigged me out and I fought them through the legal process, painstakingly established how I was rigged out and I got my mandate restored. It never happened before, and nobody appreciates the essence of free and fair election more than myself.”

  • Poll must not clash with Oba’s coronation – Oshiomhole

Poll must not clash with Oba’s coronation – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has kicked against the postponement of the state governorship election for two weeks or more.

Oshiomhole said the election could be postponed for one week because of the planned coronation of the Oba of Benin slated for September 26.

Speaking on a television programme on Thursday, the governor said the Oba’s coronation is a big event in Edo State.

He said, “We have a big event in Edo on September 26 which is the Oba’s coronation. Before that day, there are other events that must be done. It will not be proper to hold election during that period.

“Why not postpone the election for one week?”

On whether the All Progress Congress (APC) was afraid of defeat, Oshiomhole said the APC defeated the PDP in 16 local government areas in the last election held in the state.

He said his party was ready for the election, adding that Edo is not a war zone.

He added: “We will win the election. The PDP has no credibility in this state.”

  • APC ready for election – Oshiomhole

APC ready for election – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, declared on Wednesday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is “over prepared” for Saturday’s governorship election and appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to postpone the “ final burial” of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for too long.”

He said, “The APC is ready for the election this Saturday and that was why we held our mega rally on Tuesday and after that rally our people across the state became more committed, more dogged and ready for the Saturday election.

“I am already preparing to go to my village to also mobilize my people as other party leaders are doing, that is to let you know that we are not relaxing despite the fact that we know the PDP is already dead and our people are just getting ready for the burial.

“However, security issues are security issues and as regards elections they are very critical. If on their own they are calling on INEC for postponement, I am sure they must have their reasons because they are experts in it. If you recall, we raise the alarm that the PDP had planned to import thugs from neighbouring states to help them unleash mayhem on our people because they are not prepared for the election.

“They have not been campaigning because they have no message rather they imported thugs into the state. But I wish the election will go on so that security agents will pick them up and expose them. So if security agents are raising this same alarm, I will not be surprised. I am aware some of my colleagues in the South -south threatened that they will deal with me in Edo because I went against former President Jonathan.

“But I laughed because I am serving the living God and I am glad they brought a fake pastor as their candidate and we will flush them all out. These threats have been there but my appeal is that if INEC is shifting the election, it should not be too far because we are eager to bury the PDP. We have purchased their coffin and ready to be sealed.”

  • Edo governship: Who succeeds Oshiomhole?

    Edo governship: Who succeeds Oshiomhole?

Just six days to the September 10, 2016 Edo State Governorship Election, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, captures the major issues that will help determine the winner. He also reports on the strengths and weaknesses of the leading candidates and political parties

The electoral umpire has blown the big whistle. The final lap of the intriguing race has commenced. Welcome to the week of the much discussed Governorship Election in Edo State. As would be expected, the ultimate crown is the plum seat of Adams Oshiomhole, known widely as the Comrade Governor.

So, the primary question is who, amongst the 19 governorship candidates contesting the election, will succeed Oshiomhole as governor of the South-South state?

The intrigues that trailed the primaries and the campaigns have confirmed so far that the stakes are high; so also the expectations and the challenges.

    The issues:

Given the complexities of Edo State politics, keen observers and informed political analysts, while acknowledging the varied interests in the state, as represented by the participation of 19 political parties, have narrowed the contest to a clear fight between the big two; a form of renewal of the age-old political rivalry between radical elements and the conservative elites as is now represented by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively. It is a grand battle that pre-dates the emergence of Oshiomhole in the politics of Edo State. Before Oshiomhole contested and won the election on the ticket of APC in 20…, PDP firmly held the power in the state, even as it produced from the state some of the most powerful political grandmasters at the national level, like Chief Tony Aninih, described within the then ruling party as ‘Mr. Fix it.’

Power changed hands, when the then labour leader, Oshiomhole, led the radical elements to dislodge the godfathers. Though he has not only succeeded in holding power since then, but has, according to insiders, firmly altered the power equilibrium, thus dislodging the so-called natural Godfathers, PDP see this Saturday’s election as the D-Day to return to power in Edo State.

Many issues will combine to either fulfill the dreams of the PDP lords or that of Oshiomhole-led progressives to retain power. Investigation carried out by The Nation shows that the issues that will determine the result of the Edo election will, among others, include: the people’s reaction to the state’s political history vis-à-vis zonal agitations for power; Performance versus non-performance; Benin speaking factor; religion and the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates in the election.

    Performance and non-performance:

Perhaps one of the most important factors in this Saturday’s election in Edo State will be how the people perceive performance of the two leading parties in government. This is because both PDP and APC have had a taste of governance of Edo State, and as some electorates put it during the week, the election is like asking one to assess the performance of PDP and APC when they ruled the state. “This is what we are being called upon to do next Saturday. We were here during the long years PDP ruled this state with the oil money. We are here as APC, led by the Comrade Governor, is governing this state. If we are allowed to vote freely, our votes will be measured by our perception of how these two parties performed in the state. If you ask me, that’s the issue at stake,” said Dr. Eugene Esele, a Lagos based political analyst from Edo State.

So, although APC’s Oshiomhole and the former governor, Lucky Igbinedion of PDP are not candidates in this Saturday’s election, their performance while in office will likely be one of  the major yardsticks that would be used to assess the candidates of the party. Acknowledging this, APC’s candidate, Godwin Obaseke said: “their track record was so bad that in their ten years they had nothing to show the people of the state. So, that being the fact on ground, it has been easy for me to appeal to the voters to vote for me as APC candidate and my running mate Philip Shuaibu.” In Obaseke’s campaigns across the state, he had carefully explained to the people the need to continue the good work Oshiohmole-led APC government has been doing. This request has continually received applause.

In the case of PDP, the alleged non-performance of Igbinedion while in office had remained an albatross on the neck of Pastor Ize-Iyamu. The allegation is so open and widely acknowledged that during the re-election campaign of Igbinedion, his father had acknowledged it and pleaded to the electorates that when a son fails in an examination, he should be allowed to repeat the class. Governor Igbinedion was given another chance but his critics, till date, swear he performed abysmally. Ize-Iyamu, who also played a major role in the government as at that time, has been quoted as explaining that though he was a senior officer in the PDP government in the state, he was not the governor per se, even as he promised to do better than what his former principal did. How this record will impact in the performance of PDP in the forthcoming election remains to be seen. As for APC, if performance is the only factor, it is sure to pick the plum seat for continuity.

    Political History:

Taking cognizance of the passion expressed by some electorates during the campaigns, and how the leading political parties have reacted to it so far, it seems obvious that the political history of the state will also play a significant role in the result of this Saturday’s election. It would be recalled that Benins constitute about 50 percent of the total population of the state. This means that any candidate that hopes to win this election must get reasonable percentage of the votes of the region. To understand how this factor will favour either APC’s candidate or PDP’s candidate, one will amongst others, look back into the recent history of elections in the area, like the intrigues that played out in 2007 between the interests of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Tony Anenih and how their conflicting interests then affected the result of the governorship election in Edo. Insiders said the effect of those intrigues on the politics of the area is still fresh and relevant.

This added to the well articulated zonal agitations for power will help to determine the result of the election. It would be recalled that Edo-Central, which however has fewer voting population, made passionate appeal to be allowed to present the current governor since Igbinedion and Oshiomhole, from Edo-… and Edo… respectively have governed the state. When Prof. Osunbur from Edo Central got elected, he lost the mandate in court to Oshiomhole. Although the candidates of both APC and PDP, Obaseke and Ize-Iyamu, are not from this zone, investigation shows that APC-led government may have made great impact by the choice of a lawmaker from the Central as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly.

    Religion

Another factor that may be considered is religion. Recently, Governor Osiomhole’s Chief Press Secretary, Peter Okhiria, in a press statement, accused PDP candidate, Ize-Iyamu, a senior pastor in The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), of converting a church building to campaign office.

This campaign against Ize-Iyamu’s attempt to unfairly use religious factor peaked when pictures of his campaign posters, pasted on the walls of the zonal headquarters of the church in Benin, were published in some national newspapers.

Speaking through his campaign organisation, Ize- Iyamu said, ”Governor Adams Oshiomhole and his puppet APC candidate, Godwin Obaseki, should not drag RCCG into their dirty, unholy politics.

“The allegation is a cheap blackmail from those who want to bring the name of the church into disrepute, and they will surely fail.” Ize-Iyamu added, ”Why can’t pastors be part of our efforts to rescue Edo State?

Aside these factors, the experience and personality coupled with the strengths and weaknesses of the two candidates will also go a long way in determining the winner of the election.

    Osagie Ize-Iyamu:

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the PDP governorship candidate was a Chief of Staff and former Secretary to the Edo State Government under former governor Lucky Igbinedion. He is also a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God and a lawyer by profession.

While his membership of a popular Pentecostal church may be an advantage, his critics say his association with the Igbinedion-led PDP government in Edo may affect him negatively. For example, many are alleging that if he wins, it would mean the return of Igbinedion to power.

However, our investigation shows that Ize-Iyamu is not just an experienced politician but as an insider puts it, he is “a damn good politician.” His critics, while not contesting his experience in politics, insist his election will mean the return of the godfathers in Edo. His major supporters and patrons, according to insiders, include the powerful Igbinedions and Chief Tony Anenih. So, though Ize-Iyamu, according to our findings, is strong in the Benin area and in Edo-South, one of his major headaches would be how to overcome the current resentment of his patrons.

    Godwin Obaseki:

Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the APC candidate, was born in Benin City, Nigeria to the famous and illustrious Obaseki family. He attended the University of Ibadan where he obtained a BA in Classics. He later attended Columbia University and Pace University in New York and has an MBA in Finance.

Before his emergence in politics, he was a private-sector man. Highly rated in the stock exchange sector, where he owns a thriving business, Obaseke is one of the highly respected investment gurus in the country, as he services major blue chip businesses. His supporters says, Obaseke, who heads the economic team is an asset to the Adams Oshiomhole-led Edo State Government as he is the one “who knows how to generate money.” It was under such sound economic advice that Edo, under Oshiomhole raised the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from a mere N500m to over N1.5billion.

So, one of the factors that will go for the APC candidate is his sound knowledge of economy. APC is saying that the general economic trend demands not just a good politician as the governor, but a man with sound knowledge of economy.

The challenge Obaseke will have to contend with however is the allegation that he will be Oshiomhole’s puppet since he enjoyed open support of the outgoing governor. To this, Obaseke said, “I keep saying to them that if I was a stooge for the last eight years and that led to the amount of development and progress that we have made, then if being a stooge will lead to the progress of my people I rather be a stooge to my people than being a none stooge that will steal our common wealth. It is nonsense. Also what are the issues: the issues are about development, about utilising our wealth for our common good. So, if being a stooge means utilising public funds for the betterment of the people of Edo State, if being a stooge means I am not going to meet with any godfather to decide on how my budget will be implemented, then I will rather be such a stooge.”

Our investigation shows that APC’s Obaseke is very strong in Benin and in Edo-North. We also gathered that Oshiomhole’s appreciable performance in Edo-Central, where he lost woefully in 2007 election but did comparatively well in the last governorship election, has given APC increasing support there.

    Campaign punches:

During the campaigns, the two parties had been given punches here and there. There is every indication that the parties’ and candidates’ performances will depend, to some extent on how they are able to respond to these criticisms. For example, the PDP tried to hype the bad economic realities of today, blaming APC. Obaseke and his party, which blamed the former governments of PDP for the economic difficulties, will need to convince electorates that they have what it takes to reverse the economic difficulties.

On their side, APC accused PDP failing to develop the state in all the years that it held sway in the State House. Unless PDP and its candidate, Ize-Iyamu has tenable answer to this, the electorates may ignore their pleas to give them a second chance.

From these, it seems certain that the Saturday, September 10, 2016 Edo State Governorship Election is poised to be not just intriguing but issue-based.

  • Oshiomhole: Boko Haram defeat makes us proud of Armed Forces

Oshiomhole: Boko Haram defeat makes us proud of Armed Forces

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has said residents of the state are proud of the services of the Armed Forces to the peace and security of the state and the nation, especially their defeating of Boko Haram terrorists.

The governor spoke at the 18th Combat Service Support Training Week of the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport in Benin, the state capital.

He noted that the Army had gone beyond its call of duty in protecting the nation’s territorial integrity to also ensure internal security.

Oshiomhole said: “I cannot imagine what would have become of this state’s security if we did not have the support of the Armed Forces going beyond their conventional call of duty to support the police and the State Security Service (DSS) for the security of our people. None of us ever thought that security was far more complicated. It goes beyond defending, as they say, the territorial integrity to dealing with internal issues of insurgency in ways that are so complicated. A few years back, many of us would never have thought of the possibility of a full-blooded Nigerian carrying out what they would refer to as suicide bombing.”

More PDP members will be arrested if… – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Wednesday said more members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would be arrested and prosecuted if they continue to run foul of the law.

Oshiomhole said nobody is exempted from prosecution under his administration.

The governor was responding to threat by the PDP to carry out mass protest over the arrest of 13 of its members.

He spoke at a meeting with youths from Ovia North East local government area who stormed the State Government House to endorse the candidacy of Godwin Obaseki as the All Progress Congress (APC) flagbearer in next month’s governorship election in the state.

Oshiomhole said the PDP members were charged to court to show that the state was not a banana republic.

He said it was ridiculous for the PDP members to boast that nothing would happen when they break the law and attack a member of his cabinet.

The governor said, “You need courage to put an end to exemption, as long as I am here, there is no exemption for anyone. Nobody has the right to behave like an emperor. We were carrying poles to extend electricity to some villages, they arranged some boys to block the vehicle. They forced the driver to stop, attacked one of our commissioners and said nothing will happen.

“Nothing will happen when you break the law, caused obstruction and prevent a community from getting development? That is waging war against a community and we needed to demonstrate that Edo State is not a banana republic. They arrange all manner of people to the highway when they will not send their children to the highway.

“We have to charge them to court and they have been remanded in prison according to law. I want to see how their pay masters will get them bail. We need to show that Edo is not under one man rule. If they repeat it again, we will charge them again.”

  • We have shown that Edo is a viable state, says Oshiomhole

We have shown that Edo is a viable state, says Oshiomhole

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State said yesterday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government has demonstrated that the state is  viable after it was brought to its knees by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its eight years in the state.

Oshiomhole, spoke at rallies in Ameddokhian, Egbele, Uzea and Ivue, near Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of the state.

The PDP, he said, was never interested in the development of the state having made the people to believe that the state was a pure civil service state, and as such, had no money.

His words:”PDP’s years of leadership in Edo was a waste. They told us that there is no money in Edo and they failed to build schools, construct roads, build hospitals and they even sacked workers.

“But with our efforts these past seven years, we have shown that Edo is a viable state. This is evident in the schools and hospitals we have built, the roads we have constructed, and water we have provided across the state.

“It is for this reason that we are bold to ask for continuity. The continuity I am asking is that the work APC has started must be completed,” he said.

Oshiomhole said his administration’s development strides across the state and Edo Central particularly, surpassed what an indigene of Esan land could not do, even when they held sway as leadership of the PDP at both state and national levels.

“Instead of developing this place, they only bring to you, every four years, N2,000 for you to vote for them. They again abandon you only to resurface four years later for another deceit.

“To me, this is disservice to you. This tells you that they never mean well for you. They only try to buy you to gain power in order for them to enrich themselves,” he said.

At the rally, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, APC flag bearer, said what Oshiomhole’s administration had done was to lay foundation to take the state to the next level.

“The process of rebuilding Edo started with Oshiomhole’s government. Our work now is to take the state to the next level, to an enviable height that we all desire it to be.

“Apart from continuing with the roads construction, building of schools and hospitals, provision of water and many others, our focus will be on human capital development.

“We want to be able to ensure that youths that constitute about 60 percent of the state’s population are either engaged productively or learn a trade. Our women will also be empowered,” he added.

On his part, the state chairman of the party, Mr. Anselm Ojezua appealed for support from the people of the senatorial district.
