PDP in the hands of a cabal – Tambuwal

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday gave insights into why he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Speaking at the 6th anniversary celebration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, Tambuwal said he left the PDP because the system had been hijacked by a cabal.

According to him, the system of governance at the centre was already malfunctioning.

“We have accepted to join the movement of progressives to change the system. The system today is malfunctioning and has failed in several ways.

“You have to change a system that is not working. We have a cabal that has hijacked the instrument of authority. We should vote them out in February. What do the people of the South South have to show for voting the President? Nothing.”

Speaking further, the Speaker said President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda of Nigeria (TAN) is populated by economic saboteurs who want to protect their wealth.

He asked people in TAN to settle their debts with the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Tambuwal warned Nigerians, especially those from the South South against voting for leaders based on sentiments, adding that Nigeria needs a good leader that would not be elected on sentiments.

The Speaker said Nigerians were deceived to vote for President Jonathan based on certain sentiments.

Also speaking, a former National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Audu Ogbeh, berated President Jonathan over the loss of Mubi to the Boko Haram, saying there was no law in the country that recognized the need for special forces to fight the insurgents.

Ogbeh noted that it was worrisome that the Nigerian Army that has built a reputation for strength and discipline for over 50 years was now running at the sight of Boko Haram insurgents.

Oshiomhole may recall sacked Perm Sec, CMD

Edo State House of Assembly Speaker Uyi Igbe and other leaders of the Assembly have pleaded with Governor Adams Oshiomhole to recall the sacked Permanent Secretary in the Edo State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Ofure Eboreime, and the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Central Hospital in Benin, Dr Edith Kayode-Iyasere.

The two doctors were sacked last week by the governor for engaging casuals at the Central Hospital.

Igbe led Majority Leader Philip Shaibu, Elizabeth Ativie and Folly Ogedengbe to Oshiomhole, seeking his leniency for the sacked doctors.

He said: “We are here, the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly, to see you (governor) about Dr. Ofure Eboreime, the Permanent Secretary, Hospital Management Board and Dr. Mrs. Edith Iyasere, the Chief Medical Director, HMB.

“The House Standing Committee on Health once went to the hospital and did oversight functions there. We found that Dr Eboreime is very competent.

“We are here to appeal to you, sir, to temper justice with mercy and recall Dr. O. Eboreime and Mrs. Iyasere.

“We know that you will not compromise on standards. We appreciate that because that is the reason Edo State has moved to the position it is today.

“Sir, I am sure every now and then, people make mistakes. I am sure this is one of the mistakes that people make. I ask on their behalf that you please forgive them.”

Folly Ogedegbe, representing Owan East, also begged the governor to forgive the two doctors.

He said: “Even then when you were the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, we knew your stand on casualisation. You fought against casualisation of workers. I can imagine how embarrassed you were when you knew that there were casuals in the state service where you have long given directives that it should not happen…”

Oshiomhole said: “Yours is a parliament that is the representative of the people, one that has its ears to the ground and one that is committed to the electorate. I know that when we take decisions, we do receive pressure. But let me explain why I took the decision.

“I am very privileged to be here and I am an employee. All my life, what I have done for a living is to defend workers.

“When we talk of workers, it’s not just junior workers. But we make a representation for the big and for the small and for the anonymous. I do not take any joy; in fact, it is always a sad moment for me when I take a decision to relieve anybody of his or her job.

“Someone drew my attention to the fact that casuals were protesting over non-payment of their salaries and that they had not been paid for several months.

“This was shocking to me because though our finances are difficult and despite the fact that many other state governments are in default in the payment of salaries, some three months, some four months, I insisted that in Edo State, the pay day is sacrosanct. Workers are entitled, as a right, to their wages.

“So, to hear that some workers were protesting for not being paid for up to six months was shocking.”

The governor assured Assembly’s leadership that he would  heed their pleas.

He urged the lawmakers to bring the two doctors to his office today.

    Old students hail Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has been hailed by the old students association of Sobe High School, Sobe, Edo State for restoring honour and glory to the school.

The association in a letter expressed its profound appreciation to Oshiomhole for giving the people of  Owan West Local Government the dividends of democracy.

“For our special mention is Sobe High School, Sobe, which a few years ago was in a despicable state. So repulsive and visibly dangerous then were its structures that made parents and guardians to withdraw their children and wards from the school to other schools,”it said.

The association pledged to encourage the workers, students and the community to maintain the structures so that the school will remain a model.

As part of the activities marking the school’s 40th Founders’ Day, the association has begun a one-week activities featuring prayer session, school debate, career talk, rag day/community, novelty football match, cultural performances, awards and prize giving.

On Saturday, it will hold a carnival and a gala night, to be followed by a thanksgiving service on Sunday.

    •Oshiomhole mourns

The lawmaker representing Estako East in the Edo State House of Assembly, Peter Usman Aliu, is dead.

Aliu died yesterday at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UNIBENTH) of a kidney-related ailment.

A staunch member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the late Aliu played a major role under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to oust the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the leadership of the Assembly.

He became  Speaker Protempore in 2010, following the impeachment of Zakawanu Garuba.

Born in Igbiode-Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area, the late Aliu attended St. Peter’s Grammar School at Agbenebode and the Federal Polytechnic in Auchi, where he studied Accountancy.

He went to England in 1976 as a federal scholar for an Accountancy professional examination. He later attended the Ambrose Alli University, where he read Law. He was called to the Bar in 2000.

Aliu, who was serving as a second term lawmaker, was said to have picked the expression of interest form to contest in next year’s general elections.

He was the Committee Chairman on Public Account, Appropriation and Project Monitoring.

Dignitaries, including impeached Deputy Speaker Festus Ebea, have visited the family at the legislators’ quarters.

Speaker Uyi Igbe refused to comment on the matter.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole described the late Aliu as a man of character and principle, whose stand on state and national issues was unwavering.

The governor spoke yesterday at a condolence visit to the widow of the late lawmaker, Mary.

Oshiomhole said: “Aliu was my brother. In moments of temptation, he showed courage and good character. When people plotted to betray us, he stood firm, remained on the side of fairness, justice and principle. When people brought money, he refused money in favour of principle.

“The last time I saw him and we had a conversation, he was more concerned about my political well-being rather than his own health…”

  • Oshiomhole denies vying for APC presidential ticket

Oshiomhole denies vying for APC presidential ticket

EDO State Governor Adams Eric Oshiomhole has denied insinuations that he was vying for the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) presidential ticket.

The governor, in a statement yesterday, said while he remained committed to the Nigerian project, his focus was on how to accelerate the pace of development in Edo State.

The statement reads: “Following persistent inquiries from friends, political associates and well-meaning Nigerians, both at home and abroad, over speculations of my interest in the 2015 presidential election and media comments by my aides, I wish to categorically state that I am not contesting the 2015 presidential election.

“My focus now is to continue with our efforts to accelerate the pace of development programmes to take Edo State to the next level.

“Today, I believe my party, the APC, has enough credible materials to pick from to fly the party’s flag in the 2015 presidential election.

“Anyone conversant with my antecedents will attest that I am not the type who does things half-heartedly. If I had resolved to run in 2015, I would have come out boldly and publicly to declare my intention.

“Recall that in 2007, shortly after the expiration of my tenure as two-term President of the Nigeria  Labour Congress (NLC), I similarly came under pressure from well-meaning Nigerians from across all the divides (including foremost human rights lawyer and activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi of blessed memory) to vie for the Presidency.

“But convinced that anyone genuinely interested in service could do so in any capacity, I insisted against popular demand not to contest the presidency, but the governorship of Edo State in 2007 and, to the Glory of God, I won. Again, in 2012, I sought re-election and resoundingly won.

“I remain absolutely committed to the Nigerian project.

“I offer this clarification to clear the air once and for all.”

  • Why Oshiomhole should be president, by aide

Why Oshiomhole should be president, by aide

Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation Mr. Louis Odion has affirmed Governor Adams Oshiomhole as a serious contender for next year’s presidential election.

Odion, who spoke yesterday in Benin, insisted that the governor is better equipped to lead the nation and rescue the citizenry from bondage.

He said the governor has better credentials than other APC presidential aspirants and more suitable to pick the party’s ticket next month.

He said: “It is not a rumour; it is a fact that Oshiomhole is in the race. But if you expect the kind of jamboree that is currently taking place, where people embark on road show, promising heaven and earth, Oshiomole is not going to do that.

“I can tell you he is in the race. It is in response to the yearnings of well-meaning Nigerians; our country needs somebody of his pedigree at this point of our history to move Nigeria forward.

“You will even recall early this year, when Governor Fashola said the nation needs somebody like Oshiomhole as president to change Nigeria.

“And Fashola, as we all know, is a performing governor. But he said being somebody that has stayed in Benin City before as a student of UNIBEN, he knows what Benin is then and today. And that is why he said Oshiomhole is a good material.”

The commissioner added that as a journalist, he has taken time to read reports as well as appraise those who have so far declared interest in the Presidency within the APC.

His words: “Of course, you have somebody like General Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

“The Speaker of the House Aminu Tambuwal has also been mentioned as a possible candidate and my brother and friend, Sam Ndah, has also been mentioned.

“But when I look at the parade, I sometime don’t get inspire with some of the sentiments they advance for joining the race. People will say okay Buhari is a regional champion and that he is the only one who can galvanise vote from the North. And in terms of qualification, Atiku is regarded as someone who has deep pocket. For Rabiu Kwankwaso, he is somebody who is very effective in Kano State. For Tambuwal, some will say whereas he seems to offer freshness, his own disability is that he has not had the experience.

“And for Sam Ndah, I read where he was described as a man of novel ideas. I think in all of them, Oshiomhole stands taller in the sense that he is the only one who offers a pan-Nigeria perspective. Oshiomhole is going to come in, not as a candidate of the South-South, but as a man whose face is known in every nook and cranny of Nigeria. That is what he is bringing in. His own credential is leadership and integrity.”

Odion noted that as NLC leader, the governor had the responsibility of leading the workers’ union, which he also described as the most cohesive and cutting across all the nation’s divides.

Oshiomhole, the commissioner added, had the opportunity of leading NLC for eight years, adding that he acquitted himself creditably.

“As a matter of fact, one will regard him as the most successful labour leader we ever had in post-colonial Nigeria. And after leaving NLC, people like the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi thought he should give the Presidency a shot. But he said well, I needed to start from somewhere.

“He started from Edo State and of course, he is serving a second term as governor. When he came, some people said there was difference between unionism and politics, and that good unionists don’t make good leaders. But Oshiomhole has proved them wrong today. He has delivered on his mandate massively in the last six years.

“So, the idea now is that if he is given the opportunity, he will deliver Nigeria from the present bondage that we have. So, I want to tell you that Oshiomhole is in the race and I tell you of all the candidates I see so far within the APC, he offers the greatest hope for Nigeria.”

  • ‘PDP’s propaganda against Oshiomhole ‘ll fail’

‘PDP’s propaganda against Oshiomhole ‘ll fail’

Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s media aide Prince Kasim Afegbua, in this interview with OSAGIE OTABOR,  speaks on the giant strides of  the administration and other issues.

The PDP has said that Governor Adams Oshiomhole will not be able to complete many projects before the expiration of his second term. What is your view?

The opposition will express worry because they do not understand the mechanics of governance. They don’t have what it takes to provoke some initiatives that could have well-meaning impact on the people of the state. They presided over the state for 10 good years and their record of performance showed an abysmal failure in all areas and sectors of Edo State. It is expected that they will continue to raise worry and doubts over the monumental achievements that we have recorded because that has put an end to their claim that Edo State is not worth investing in. They said the state was poor, had no money but they were lining their pockets while the state was dripping away. Comrade Oshiomhole has been able to inject new life into the main stream of Edo politics, economy and social well-being.

outing from pillar to pillar about projects that will not be completed.

Did they build one when they held sway? We have built several hospitals across the state. To run criticism is very easy but to be an author you have to dig deep into the mold. The authentic Edo people know for too well that the Comrade Governor is better equip to manage the affairs of the state in a prudent manner than all the pretenders that we have seen in recent years.

Will there be new projects before the end of Oshiomhole’s tenure?

Certainly there will be new projects. The storm water project will be completed because that is getting a blessing of the World bank. We took a bond to service that. People don’t understand the project. We are not only doing the drainages, we are building on top of it. You need to go round to see the quality of the work. Only when you are affected by flooding that you will know the impact of what we are trying to do. Collecting water from several flooding areas into the Ogba river and other rivers is not a mean feat. They can sit back because they will not go round to do inspection. It is not enough to sit back and be arm chair critic because they want to be heard in the media. The leadership of the PDP in this state don’t have the intellectual understanding to be able to explain how government work because when they were here, they were sharing money.

Is it true that the governor has spent much on private jets?

The governor does not charter flight to foreign trips. He takes public transportation that is the truth. Most times he gets friends who bring jets to him to take him to where he wants to go. Didn’t forget he was a former president of the NLC. He has friends  across the states of the federation. He got people who appreciated him. Some people funded his election, friends and associates. He is got enormous goodwill that you can’t quantify. When people see him taking jets, they think that it was chartered. He is the only governor that travels alone without ADC or CSO outside the country. Mention any PDP governor that travels outside this country alone. It is only Oshiomhole that does that. Go to the Airport and find out. Oshiomhole travels alone. If there is an urgent issues on matters of state and there are no flights, he can charter flight and that is not out of place.

What is the priority of this government in the next two years.

We have a developmental agenda factored into economic blueprint which we have been pursuing and in the second term attention is purely focus on job creation. By now if we were able to sell the Edo House for example, we would have invested the money here to build a five star hotel. We are going to find another route to ensure that we build the hotel. Other areas of employment will also be looked into and that is why the Shoprite project is still on-going. They have resolve the issue in the land. The Presco Oil Company is recruiting over 1000 persons. They are doing expansion because of the land we have accorded them. Our priority is generally to create employment but you cannot do that without having platforms. We have been able to build on infrastructure in the first term and we are continuing with that and to consolidated and complete those ones that we have done. It is the responsibility of government to now leverage on the economic value of those infrastructure so that we can gain from it. If you are producing banana and you can take them to the city where the demands are high, we are going to remain at that subsistence level. We have open up roads in the rural areas and people are now bringing their goods to the cities. We will complete roads under construction. We are going to do more schools and build more hospitals. We expect that the government that will take over from Oshiomhole will continue from where we stop because government is continuos.

Do you see the APC winning next year’s election, despite the defection of Ikimi and others?

Ikimi’s electoral fortune is not formidable enough to sway voters. I think Ikimi is over celebrated. It is understandable that Ikimi is a paper tiger but  he does not have electoral value. The advantage of APC has going for it is that Oshiomhole can point to things he has done. He can campaign of issues and tell the people what he has done. The PDP will only be saying what they intend to do. Edo people know the PDP history of performance. This state will remain an APC state for many years. Whoever the PDP fielded cannot whip up the kind of endorsement that will be require to upstage the APC. We have done so much. We won’t miss Ikimi.

Oshiomhole supported some lawmakers to get elected in 2011. Is he regretting his actions?

Regret on one side, but he is going to do it again.

    What kind of regret?

Some persons who pretentiously appear good and electable, the governor put all his credentials and political capital into their campaigns, they got elected and midway into the stream, they bolted away in terms of retirement benefits from the PDP. You know the PDP has so much to dispense away in terms of patronages. In 2015, the governor will be so much involve because APC is like a movement. People must get to understand that this party is pro development and when you are going to get into the APC platform to contest election, that has to be ringing on the aspirants head.

    Oshiomhole signs 2015 budget

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday signed the 2015 Appropriation Bill as passed by the lawmakers into law.

Oshiomhole presented a budget estimate of N156.551billion, but the lawmakers shored up the expenditure framework by almost N3billion and increased it to N159.3 billion.

The governor, who spoke after signing the budget, expressed confident that his administration would do everything possible to ensure that the laudable objectives contained in the budget are realized.

Oshiomhole assured that he would ensure the electorates get value for money in line with the tradition of managing prudently and proper costing of projects.

He promised to sustain the tradition of blocking leakages as well as aggressive pursue of revenue drive in order to find the resources to implement the budget.

He said the hope of getting the budget realized in full would depend on how the Federal Government tackles the problem of oil theft.

His words, “It is also my hope that the effort the Federal Government has been making and its currently making with regards to improving security around oil installations and all of that will lead to substantial reduction if not putting an end to crude oil theft.

“Once we can attain that, then we hope that all the revenue accruing from our oil and gas sector will become available for distribution at the federation account. If that happens, then of course our hope of getting full implementation of this budget will be realized.”

  • Oshiomhole to Jonathan: Ikimi cannot win Edo for you

Oshiomhole to Jonathan: Ikimi cannot win Edo for you

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has said that it was a tall dream for President Goodluck Jonathan to think that the defection of Chief Tom Ikimi from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party would sway victory for PDP in the state.

Oshiomhole, who was reacting to a boast by President Jonathan that the PDP would recapture Edo State in 2015 and 2016, said it was unfortunate that the President was being deceived by PDP leaders in the state.

The Governor, who spoke through his Political Adviser, Hon Charles Idahosa, said the President should have checked how many persons defected alongside Ikimi to the PDP.

He noted that the Binis which constitutes over 50 per cent of Edo population have been marginalized by the PDP-led federal government, adding it was a tall dream for President Jonathan to think that Esan godfathers would win Edo for him.

“Ikimi said he left APC because after cooking the food, people came and stole both the pot and the food away. But in this case, he forgot that it was Ize-Iyamu who cooked the food that those that left the APC for PDP took along.  Ikimi went to the stadium to hijack the show by introducing Ize-Iyamu instead of Ize-Iyamu introducing him to the President.

“Ize-Iyamu, who did all the cooking, was now a spectator. Dr.  Samuel Ogbemudia was never mentioned there, former Governor Lucky Igbinedion was seated there, his father Esama was seated and none of them were asked to speak, yet President Jonathan is boasting that PDP will win Edo. That is laughable.

“We will deal with them in February. As we speak today there is no single Bini man or woman who is a minister, Permanent Secretary, CEO, so what is the PDP going to tell Bini people that will make the Binis vote for PDP? And the days of rigging are over. We are going to deal with them. Every appointment is in Esan and Uromi in particular. It is a wild dream to say they will win Edo.”

  • Oshiomhole presents N156.551b 2015 budget

    Oshiomhole presents N156.551b 2015 budget

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, Tuesday presented a budget estimate of N156.55billion for 2015 to the state House of Assembly.

The budget, according to the governor, consists of N87.56 billion, representing 55.77 per cent of the total budget, as capital expenditure, while the proposed recurrent expenditure is N 68.99 billion, which represents 44.23 per cent of the total budget.

Oshiomhole said the budget is based on the following sectoral classification and in line with global best practice – Recurrent Expenditure, Administration (N 17.873 billion), Economic (N 5.342 billion), Law (N2.955 billion) and Social Justice (N 20.173 billion).

He said, “As part of our continuous effort to entrench efficient and effective service delivery system, we will in 2015 continue to encourage and promote the training and retraining of our civil servants, including the teaching staff in our public schools, to enable us build a highly skilled and vibrant work force that will always be alive to its responsibilities.

“After decades of debilitating political and economic oppression, it is important to note that Edo people have decidedly voted for change and they do not want to go look back or give in to lamentation.

“This is amply demonstrated by the massive support they have given this administration since its inception. More than at any time in their history, our people are better sensitized.

“ On our own part, as authentic servants of our people, I am glad to also note that we have kept faith with the yearnings and aspirations of our people for a better society for this and up-coming generations.

“We have worked tirelessly, we have ushered in a new era and new ways of approaching and solving problems. Our people are by and large happy with our performance. Still, if I may borrow the words of late Kenyan political leader, Oginga Odinga, ‘it’s not yet uhuru.’

“More work is ahead because for whom much is given, much is expected. We are also racing against time. I am sure that that this realization will inform the disposition of this honourable House to this budget proposal for the 2015 fiscal year.

“Let me at this stage once again place on record my deep appreciation to Mr. Speaker and the honourable members of this House for their cooperation and support extended to the executive arm which in no small measure accounted to the positive achievements of this administration.”
