Oshiomhole praises mum at book launch

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has praised his mother, Hajia Aishetu Oshiomhole, saying she taught him the virtues of honesty and doggedness.

Speaking at the launch of a biography, “Igovina Emosi” a biography of Alhaja  Oshiomhole written by Imuzeze Ofen-Imu, the governor said said he learnt early in life that resources that belong to the people must not be tampered with no matter the condition.

He said: “My mom is a woman of virtue. She has a very kind heart and somehow she taught the values of being straightforward, of courage.

“My mom has been the unofficial treasurer of various community meetings where the books are not written and she kept the money under the carpet and yet when we are going to school and we need money, she would say there is no money.

“I would say there is money under the carpet and she would say that the money belongs to the community. Those are some of the values we seem to have lost.

“Even now at her age, I discourage her from getting involved in all sorts of things but she would remind me that she knows politics more than me. I once teased her that whatever she thinks she knows in politics, she was never elected not even as a councilor.”

Former Minister of State (Works) Chris Ogiemwonyi, who chaired the occasion, praised Oshiomhole for developing the state.

He said: “Today we salute your courage for the Benin Airport Road. For a long time, Oshiomhole was the first to bring bulldozers to Benin. You had the courage to give the Benins befitting roads and today they are happy for it.”

Oshiomhole denies chartering flight to U.S

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Monday denied allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party that he spent N18 million to charter a private jet to Miami, United States.

Oshiomhole said the PDP Chairman in the state, Chief Dan Orbih, exhibited talent for lies and contempt for facts for making what he termed “ludicrous claim.”

Orbih had at the weekend alleged that the state government spent over N400 million to attend Edo Convention in the U.S.

Oshiomhole, who spoke through the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Louis Odion, said he travelled to the U.S in a commercial airline to honour Edo Community.

Odion said, “Anyone who bothers to double-check would find that Comrade Oshiomhole is perhaps one of the few governors today who travel with the smallest entourage, if not totally alone, with a view to saving costs.

“By his latest idiotic lie, we are left wondering what is Orbih’s motive. Whatever it is, one thing is clear. Orbih, a poor student of History, is obviously against building and cementing the bond of unity in Edo State.

“Otherwise, Orbih’s sworn apostle of divide-and-rule politics, would not have dared this time to profane something as sacred as the coming together of all Edo people in United States with his leprous tongue when indeed proud and true Edo sons like Comrade Oshiomhole are toiling tirelessly, day and night, to unite the people.”

He said,”I am celebrating God’s goodness in my life. God has been so good to me. As I was going with my entourage to Minna to campaign, Saraki called that I should join him on a flight when we get to Ilorin.

“My car was later involved in an accident. God prevented me from going on the road. My orderlies are still at the hospital.”

He said: “We in Edo State appreciate the sacrifices the men and officers are paying at this critical time of our history by dealing with new forms of crime that one never thought was possible in this country a couple of years back.

“We appreciate the will, the determination to confront the risk and to defeat them. I believe the Commander-in-Chief and our President Goodluck Jonathan is providing the leadership and the Nigeria Army is doing an excellent job in making a bold statement that these terrorists will be defeated. By the grace of God, Nigeria will be secured for generations yet unborn.

“I want to thank Mr President, who graciously approved the Army to support and compliment the efforts of the Nigerian Police. For us in Edo, the Nigeria Army is part and parcel of the community. Edo people are proud of the Nigerian Army and are proud of the contributions you are making to make Edo State safe.”

The governor thanked the Army for acknowledging the support of the state government.

He said: “Giving the support is one thing and making judicious use of it is another. I think the officers, who remodelled this building, have shown the capacity of the Nigerian Army to manage resources judiciously.”

Lt.-Gen. Minimah assured that the Army would overcome the present security challenges.

He said: “Let me reassure Nigerians that the current security challenges and other security challenges bedevilling the country are surmountable and will soon become a thing of the past. The Army will not relent until all forms of terrorism and criminal activities are driven out of our shores. We cannot, we must not, and we will not fail the nation.

“At this point, I want to thank President Goodluck Jonathan for his untiring support of the Army and the Armed Forces. I equally thank our political leaders at all levels of government for their solidarity with the Army, particularly the Governor and people of Edo state.

“I want to thank the governor and people of Edo State, not only for this project but also for other interventions in the Army barracks in the state. I recall that just last June, the Edo State Government provided a commercial borehole and a 500KVA generator for Ekenhuan Barracks.

“This gesture and many other supports by the Edo State Government is deeply appreciated and worthy of every level of commendation. I call on other state governments to take a cue from the Edo State Government and support our troops to confront the current security challenges bedevilling our country.”

In a welcome address, Maj.-Gen. Nienge hailed Oshiomhole for his interest in the welfare of the officers and men of the Army in Edo State.

    Oshiomhole seeks prayers for Nigeria

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has congratulated the Muslim ummah (community) on the successful completion on the Ramadan fast.

In the Eid-el-Fitri message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Peter Okhiria, the governor urged Muslims to sustain godliness, charity, perseverance and spiritual intercession for the nation.

He said: “The Ramadan offered Muslims another opportunity to shun evil for good; another opportunity for the faithful to remould and reshape their lives physically and spiritually to meet with the aspirations of Almighty Allah as laid down in the Holy Qur’an.

“Having observed strictly the injunctions of Almighty Allah by self-denial through fasting and prayers and by offering Zakat (the poor due) to the less privileged, the lessons learnt during the holy month should not be lost.”

Oshiomhole said the spiritual intercession of the Muslim ummah would remain indispensable to the nation.

The governor urged “the faithful to continually pray for the peace, progress and stability of the nation, especially at this critical time; pray for wisdom for those in leadership positions and for continued peace, growth and tranquility in Edo State”.

He added: “The Muslim ummah should remember that there is abundant reward in fidelity to Allah’s injunctions. I urge the faithful to sustain the acts of worship and shun all forms of evil which negate the lessons learnt during the Holy month.

“I beseech the faithful to continue to live in peace and harmony with men of other faith in our state so that the blessings of Almighty Allah will continue to shower on us all in the state.”

    Shun stomach politics, says Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has urged women to shun politicians who preach politics of “stomach infrastructure”, saying they do not mean well for the state and the nation.

Addressing women at the Edo Women Conference held in Benin City, Oshiomhole said: “Edo women have the right to question politicians on their credibility because it is no longer the business of rice, salt, beans, or money.

“It is knowing what happened in the past and comparing with the present. Women, you have the right qualifications because intelligence is not determined by possessions of certificates.

He urged the women to have confidence in themselves, saying, “You are not powerless as women but have confidence that as women, you are not inferior to any other group and it’s not about competition between you and the men but rather organise yourselves, mobilise and show determination to change a situation that has deprived, victimized and oppressed.

“The day you make up your mind to do that, you would have come out of your woes and lamentations,” he said.

In a paper presentation entitled “Edo Women Society, Our Issues our Voices”, the Guest Speaker, Dr. Mrs. Esohe Aighatise,  stated some issues facing Edo Women in contemporary times.

She said, “Education is one of the problems that face women in our contemporary Edo Society.

She stated other issues to include cultural barriers, such as female genital mutilation, political inequalities, societal values, amongst others.

  • Mark, Amosun, Oshiomhole, others hail Soyinka at 80

Mark, Amosun, Oshiomhole, others hail Soyinka at 80

Governors, lawmakers, scholars, critics and other frontline Nigerians yesterday poured encomiums on Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka on his 80th birthday.

They noted that Soyinka has been one of the most outstanding contributors to Nigeria’s educational growth, knowledge and global Literature.

Senate President David Mark said Soyinka is a rare breed of the writer and intellectual.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, the Senate President said Soyinka has been touching lives and shaping the future of younger generations.

He said Soyinka brought pride and honour to Nigeria when he won the Nobel Laureate Prize in 1986.

Mark said: “Prof Soyinka is a pride to Africa. His kinds are few. We cannot appreciate him enough. His intellectual prowess is equal to none. Many successful Nigerians passed through him. Many more would profit from his fountain of knowledge and wisdom.

“As the erudite Professor marks his birthday, I pray and wish him good health, peace and abundant wisdom to continue to contribute to the development of Nigeria.”

He said the Senate and the National Assembly congratulated “this son of Africa and a true citizen of the world on this special occasion of his birthday”.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun said Soyinka is an international and intellectual icon for his globally  – acknowledged literary accomplishments.

The governor rued the absence of role models for the youth, adding that this does not augur well for the country and its future leaders.

He said this was the reason his administration was always celebrating good things about Ogun State.

According to him, this is to encourage the younger generation to emulate or learn good lessons.

Amosun spoke yesterday at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, the state capital, at a Wole Soyinka project to mark the literary icon’s 80th birthday.

The ceremony featured a spelling competition, a debate and reading contests among selected secondary school pupils.

The governor, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Media(Print), Mr Sola Balogun, urged   youths to aspire to international intellectual figures, like Soyinka, who he said attained his global status through literary works.

Amosun said: “The nice things about Ogun State we are bringing forward so that the younger ones can learn something positive from them. Our youths can challenge themselves to be like Wole Soyinka, who was once a youth.

“You can study to be an international figure. The problem we have now is that we are becoming more and more bereft of quality role models for the youths. But all hope is not lost for Nigeria. We can still pick good role models for ourselves, and in the interest of the family, state and the country.”

Also, former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel described Soyinka as a “rare breed and one of the greatest writers” that has ever lived.

In a congratulatory message, Daniel noted that Soyinka’s literary prowess and advocacy of native culture, humane social order and critiques of repressive military governments stood him out among his contemporaries as a fiery fighter and legendary statesman.

In the statement by his media aide, Mr Ayo Giwa, the former governor said: “Without any doubt, Prof Soyinka’s outspoken criticisms, which earned him extra-judicial arrests and imprisonment, shaped the political history of modern Nigeria in no small measure. They make his comments on national and international issues reference points at different fora.

“The award as a Nobel Laureate in 1986 further cemented his invincibility in his chosen career… No doubt, the ‘Kongi’ has etched his footprints in the sands of time.

“At 80, we cannot but celebrate this fierce fighter and legendary peacemaker whose patriotic ideals have earned a permanent place at national and international Halls of Fame.

“As one of the most celebrated sons of Ogun State, Nigeria and Africa, I share in the joy of the landmark celebration as Ogun State Government did on the occasions of the 70th and 75th birthday anniversaries. I wish the literary giant a very warm birthday and pray for his robust health in years ahead for more colourful years of irreplaceable memories.”

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi said Soyinka’s life and work are sources of inspiration to many.

The governor described the Nobel laureate as an innovative “social change agent” who is constantly seeking a better society for Nigeria, especially through his writing.

“Soyinka’s writings have been a source of inspiration to me. Through original insight and personal convictions, he has been driven by his regard for a fresh society that would subscribe to equity, justice and freedom. We hope to continue to draw for a long time to come from his example,” Amaechi said.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole said Soyinka remained a source of inspiration and pillar of support.

In a congratulatory message yesterday to the renowned writer, Oshiomhole said: “Over the years, whereas many to whom our nation has given so much often conduct themselves in a manner that undermines national unity. But, Soyinka, who has brought global glory to Nigeria, has done more to cement our nationhood without demanding much. You have not only written volumes seeking to cement our nationhood, but at some point even had to endure 20-month solitary confinement to keep Nigeria one.

“As a global statesman today, your greatness lies not only in your extra-ordinary literary talent and creativity but also the tireless energy you always exert in the pursuit of your convictions.

“For you, art is nothing if not deployed as a weapon to extend the frontiers of liberty and elevate the human civilisation. From your classic, titled: The Man Died, we draw timeless inspiration never to be afraid of telling truth to power. That it is more honourable to die fighting on our feet than on our knees before the oppressors.

“As a hardcore labour man myself with the privilege of leading the Nigerian workers’ movement as a two-term president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), I attest that you are a true comrade at the barricade in the true sense of the word.

“In the popular resistance of military dictatorships in the 1990s, you joined us on countless occasions on the street to fight for freedom. Even when the ‘Praetorian Guard’ drove you into exile and sentenced you to death in absentia, you never failed to connect with those of us left at the barricade at home to deepen the struggle for liberation.

“With the return of democracy in 1999, age would still not deter you from joining us in street marches against government’s anti-people policies, even in the face of the ambush of armoured tanks.

“For us, the government and good people of Edo State, you have remained a source of inspiration and pillar of support, in our determined effort to liberate our people from the shackles of political oppression by a few political ‘godfathers’ and expand, in a meaningful way, the frontiers of good governance, democracy and development.”

Acclaimed poet Prof Niyi Osundare said Soyinka’s contribution to Literature is groundbreaking.

He noted that the globally renowned writer is “epochal and phenomenal” in his writing.

Osofisan described Soyinka as “an outstanding personality”, adding that words are not enough for a tribute to the literary giant.

According to him, Soyinka is an inspiration to younger generations of writers.

He said: “One significant contribution, however, is his creation of what I will describe as a ‘condition of plausibility’ for the existence of an authentic African drama in the English language. After him, all of us became empowered, and credible.”
