    Oyo Assembly celebrates Ogundoyin on best performing Speaker award

    The Oyo Assembly has felicitated with Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin on receiving the Best Performing Speaker Award at the Africa Industrial and Development Conference and Awards 2024. 

    It said the Speaker has made all members of the Assembly and by extension Oyo state proud.

    The congratulatory message was contained in a statement on behalf of the members of the House by the Chairman House Committee on Information, Media, Public Affairs and ICT, Hon. Waheed Akintayo on Saturday. 

    The statement recalled the award was presented to the Speaker during the Nigeria Middle East Investors Expo & Awards ceremony held at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

    According to the statement, the award was an attestation to Hon. Ogundoyin’s outstanding leadership qualities which are largely responsible for the harmonious relationship existing between the legislative and executive arm of government in Oyo state.

    It added that the leadership qualities which Hon. Ogundoyin possess have also reflected in the way he is leading his colleagues across the country as the Chairman of Conference of Speakers of state legislatures of Nigeria.

    While promising not to relent in their unwavering support and cooperation with Ogundoyin’s leadership style in the House, the lawmakers wished him more laurels as he continues to discharge his legislative duties for the overall development of Nigeria in general, Oyo state and his immediate constituency in particular.

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the Oyo state House of Assembly has commended the speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, over his decision not to sanction some aggrieved lawmakers who had petitioned Governor Seyi Makinde over their alleged sidelining in the House.

    The Chief Whip of the Assembly and second-term lawmaker representing Lagelu state constituency, Akintunde Olajide, popularly called AKT, clarified on Friday, June 28, shortly after the plenary.

    There were speculations that the speaker would at the last plenary wield the strong hammer on those lawmakers allegedly involved in a petition to the governor against Ogundoyin.

    But, contrary to speculations, the speaker, during the plenary maintained that nobody would be victimized or sanctioned on account of voicing out what they felt as perceived injustice on their part while calling on lawmakers to shun sponsoring and spreading unfounded rumours capable of causing disaffection and disunity in the House.

    Olajide described the speaker’s decision to dispel the rumour and make his stand known as a show of exemplary leadership which was commendable and worthy of emulation.

    He called on the public to continue to support the legislature in carrying out its legislative business by not spreading false and malicious publications aimed at discrediting its efforts and strides.

    He emphasized the importance of House cohesion stressing that the state Assembly would not be distracted by hearsay by those bent on causing division in the House.

    He added that the House and PDP caucus in the 10th assembly remains united and committed to the oath they swore to the state and members of their constituencies.

    “Our commitment is to serve the people diligently, and the Speaker’s decision not to sanction erring lawmakers reflects a balanced approach to maintaining order while ensuring fair treatment for all members in the House.

    “As you can all see during the plenary which had virtually all members in attendance, everything went well and peacefully, legislative proceedings were orderly and in their usual manner so, what that means is that we are a united House regardless of our different political affiliations.

    “We will not be distracted by hearsay and we urge members of the public to help us maintain focus on the legislative job they elected us to do by not spreading false and unfounded rumours capable of distracting the House”, Hon. Akintunde said.

    Oyo Assembly condemns alleged murder of Ajayi Crowther varsity student

    Oyo Assembly has described the torture and killing of a student at Ajayi Crowther university in the school hostel as barbaric and appalling act against humanity.

    The lawmakers spoke while reacting to the Matter of Urgent Public Importance presented by the Chief Whip, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola representing Atiba state constituency during the last proceedings.

    The motion titled “Urgent needs for government action regarding the torture and murder of Alexander , A 200 level Engineering student at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo” explained the unfortunate incident, which led to the death of the deceased,  that he was subjected to severe physical abuse. 

    “Akor Alexander Timileyin, a promising 200 Level Mechanical Engineering Student at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo was found brutally tortured and murdered. The tragic incident deteriorated from mere accusation of phone theft to torture and subsequent death of Alexander.

    “The preliminary investigation has revealed that Alexander was last seen leaving the University library late in the evening and his body was discovered by the University’s security personnel the following morning in front of one of the hostel rooms,” the motion stated.

    Oyekola stressed that the brutal murder of Alexander is not only representing a personal tragedy but also raises broader concerns about the safety of students across the educational institutions. 

    “If immediate steps are not taken to enhance security, conduct a thorough investigation, and bring the perpetrators to justice, it could result in a loss of confidence in the safety of educational environment, potentially deterring students and their families from pursuing academic endeavour,” he added 

    While urging the Oyo Police Command to expedite investigation and apprehend the perpetrators behind the unlawful act, the House has however directed its Standing Committee on Tertiary Institutions to pay a condolence visit to the school and discuss on further means of ensuring students safety in the campus premises.

    In addition, the House also urged the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to collaborate with University authorities to conduct a comprehensive review of campus security protocols and implement necessary enhancements to ensure students’ safety.

    Abiola Ajimobi Technical University bill passed into law by Oyo Assembly

    The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed the bill renaming the state-owned First Technical University to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University into law.

    The House passed the bill into law during the plenary on Wednesday after the report of the committee on tertiary institutions was presented by its Chairman, Oluwafemi Fowokanmi.

    The report was considered clause by clause by the lawmakers during the Committee of the whole House which was constituted by the speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin.

    The bill, which renamed the First Technical University, Ibadan to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University was passed into law after it scaled through the third reading.

    Speaking on the importance of the passage of the bill into law, the chairman of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions, Fowokanmi, said the law will enable the institution to enjoy benefits enjoyed by other state-owned institutions.

    He noted that the institution is being financed from the scholarship payments by the local governments in the state and its internally generated revenue.

    The lawmaker maintained that with the renaming of the institution to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, it has authenticated that the institution is one of the state-owned tertiary institutions and will have access to subvention like every other institution in the state.

    Fowokanmi also stated that the move will allow the institution to enroll students through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and also bring down the tuition fee, which will invariably allow more admission seekers and Indigenous students to enroll.

    It will be recalled that Governor Seyi Makinde sought the repealing of the law establishing the institution by the House of Assembly to reflect a change of name to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan.

    The governor disclosed in the letter forwarded to the House that the step is to ensure that the institution’s governance structures are in line with other state-owned Institutions.

    The Nation reports that the First Technical University, Ibadan was established by late Governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2017.

    Oyo Assembly speaker seeks synergy among security agencies

    The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin has called for the closure of gaps in the security architecture of the country through synergy and collaboration between the security agencies in the country.

    He spoke in his remarks when he led the House committee on security and strategy on a working visit to the headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

    The visit, according to the speaker, was to synergize and partner to foster a holistic approach to security, governance, and legislation in the state.

    The delegation was received by the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Augustine Padonu, and the state NIS Deputy Comptroller, Olusola Odesola.

    Speaking at the headquarters of NSCDC, Hon. Ogundoyin acknowledged the efforts of the NSCDC towards securing the public and government infrastructure and protecting the people.

    He said the Civil Defense is the first point of contact of the people as far as the security situation is concerned, saying that this called for the House of Assembly to encourage the agency in the course of its duties.

    He maintained that the lawmakers, as the representatives of the people, have the mandate to protect the people and their properties in the state through improved security architecture.

    He said: “There is a wide gap in the security architecture in the country, and this can be closed through collaborating efforts with other security agencies.”

    Also at the Immigration headquarters, the Speaker commended the NIS in the aspect of passport application, processing, and collection.

    He also praised the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for the innovation he has brought to the ministry.

    Hon. Ogundoyin praised Immigration for its compliance with the collaborative effort initiative among security agencies in the state by the state Governor, Seyi Makinde.

    He noted that Oyo State shares borders with other neighbouring countries, hence the need and existence of the NIS in the state to curb acts of illegal immigrants.

    According to him, the visit will help to know how to secure and address issues of border security and how it is affecting the Command, assuring that this will go a long way in opening the door of communication between the Command and the NIS.

    The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC), Augustine Padonu, in his response, noted that the inter-security relationship by Governor Seyi Makinde is a welcome development and very different from other Commands where he had served.

    The Commandant stated that the main challenges facing the state Command are vehicles for movement, logistics, and lack of equipment to work with.

    He assured that the Command will not relent in protecting the people and their properties, securing public and government infrastructure, as well as ensuring good working relationships with other security outfits in the state.

    The Deputy Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Olusola Odesola also commended the state government for providing the necessary support to the Command.

    He said that the Agency is the lead in the area of border management, saying that the borders in Nigeria are complicated in terms of management.

    The Deputy Comptroller expressed that though there are challenges facing their men and officers in the course of their duties, however noted that, they are not excuses to discharge their duties accordingly.

    He noted that the federal government through the Minister has brought lots of innovation to border security and management which will soon launched.

    Speaking earlier on the purpose of the visit, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Dawud Olalere, said the purpose was to familiarize with the NSCDC and Immigration to see how to further collaborate for improving security system in the state.

    He charged the Commands and their men and officers not to relent in their efforts towards securing the lives and properties of the people and borders across the state.

    Members of the Committee in the delegation include Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, Hon. Lukman Ishola, Hon. Ibrahim Shittu, Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, and Hon. Rasaq Mabaje.

    The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration to take proactive and decisive steps towards addressing the menace of land grabbing and encroachment of lands in public schools across the state.

    The call was contained in a motion moved by the lawmaker representing the Oluyole state constituency, Waheed Akintayo.

    Presenting the motion, Hon. Akintayo observed the disheartening situation of some government schools’ premises which are surrounded by the indiscriminate erection of kiosks, making the environment unconducive for teaching and learning activities.

    He noted: “It is disheartening to state that virtually all public school lands in the state had been encroached upon by some unscrupulous individuals leaving the schools environment not conducive for learning.

    “Government over the years has paid lip service to the issue of encroachment of landed properties. Most of these schools have been so bastardized to the extent that the proliferation of illegal structures be it residential or commercial have taken three quarter or half possession of some public schools ‘lands in the state.”

    The House, however, enjoined the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to collaborate with the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and Office of Surveyor-General to set up an inter-ministerial committee and look into the original master plans or designs of some of the encroached public schools lands and others to erect perimeter fencing, beacons or corner piece.

    In addition, the House also directed the state Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development to expedite action in the clearing of shops and kiosks around the public school premises across the state.

    Oyo Assembly seeks arrest of Fulani leader over murder of farmer, three security operatives

    The Oyo House of Assembly on Thursday called on Commissioner of Police to order the immediate arrest of a Fulani Leader in Iwajowa Local Government, popularly called Seriki Chumo for allegedly masterminding the killing of a farmer, two members of Odua People’s Congress, (OPC) and a personnel of the Amotekun Corp during a crisis that engulfed Iwere-Ile in October, 2023.

    The call was contained in the report presented by the House Committee on Security and Strategy that investigated the incident, which occured on October 15, 2023 at Iwere-Ile in Iwajowa Local Government area of Oyo State.

    The report was read at the floor of the House by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Daud Al-Ameen Olalere (Ibadan North West).

    According to the report, the call for the arrest of Seriki Chumo became imperative following the discovery of used cartridges in his house.

    The Seriki was also accused of engaging in a gun-running business.

    Member representing Iwajowa Constituency, Hon. Ogunsola Anthony Oladejo brought the incident before the Assembly under a Matter of Urgent Public Importance.

    “Trouble reportedly started on Sunday,15th October, 2023 when some herdsmen whose cattle invaded a farm in Apakolo village in Iwere-Ile killed the farm owner, Mr. Kege Mayowa when he challenged the invaders.

    “On Sunday, Mr. Kege Mayowa, an Ohori farmer was murdered on his farmland at Apakolo village by yet-to-be-arrested herdsmen, after the late farmer challenged his killer when the herders were feeding cows on the farm. 

    “After the killing, a team of joint security agents comprising Operation Burst, Police, Amotekun LG Vigilante, and members of Oodua Peoples’ Congress, OPC, were alerted and immediately mobilized to the scene. 

    “But on sighting the team of security operatives, the herdsmen opened fire and this resulted in the death of Mr Ojo Yakubu (Amotekun operative), Mr Wasiu Salau a.k.a Federal, and Mr. Akeem Iroko. 

    “The herdsmen also wounded another Amotekun officer, Mr Kazeem Hammed; Mr Muraina Jamie, a resident at Apakolo while leaving many others receiving treatment at different undisclosed hospitals.

    “The crisis escalated on Monday 16th October, 2023,” the report reads. 

    The House, while commiserating with the families of those who died in the unfortunate incident, called for full investigation into the matter to bring all suspects and criminals involved to justice.

    It also appealed to security agents especially the Amotekun corps to engage in regular patrol of identified hideouts of criminal herders and bandits in the local government and the neighbouring settlements to forestall future occurrence.

    Other recommendations include “That the Oyo State House of Assembly should put necessary machinery in motion towards coordinating a security summit so as to proffer lasting solution to the incidences of security breaches and criminalities in the State.

    “Traditional rulers particularly in Okeogun axis of the state be urged to always conduct proper investigation and documentation before allocating lands to strange herders.”

    In their contributions, the lawmakers condemned the incessant attacks and killings of innocent farmers by herders in local and agrarian communities in Ogbomosho, Oyo, Ibarapa and Okeogun areas of the state.

    They called on Governors of Southwest states to put measures in place towards empowering and equipping the Amotekun Corps to enable them to deal with the excesses and criminal activities of the Fulani herders and bandits across Yoruba land.

    Oyo State House of Assembly has approved the appointment of former Oyo State Commissioner for Education, AbdulRahman AbdulRaheem, as the Chairman, Oyo State Education Trust Fund.

    The House also confirmed the nomination of Dr. Nureni Adeniran as the Chairman, Oyo State Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

    The confirmation followed presentation of the reports of the House Committee on Education (Basic & Secondary) and those of Education, Tertiary Institutions, Science and Technology.

    Governor Seyi Makinde last week forwarded the names of the two nominees to the lawmakers for confirmation.

    Report of the House Committee on Education, Tertiary Institutions, Science and Technology, read by the Committee Chairman, Oluwafemi Oluwafowokanmi, found AbdulRaheem worthy of the appointment and hereby recommended him for confirmation by the House.

    Likewise, the second report read by the House Committee Chairman on Education (Basic & Secondary), Johnson Ogundele, described  Adeniran as a seasoned administrator, who performed well during his tenure as the former Chairman of SUBEB.

    Oyo Assembly passes budget, raises estimate by N4.2b

    Oyo State House of Assembly yesterday passed the 2024 Appropriation Bill of N438,447,878,548.39 into law.

    This is higher than the initial N434,221,765,938.79 presented to the House by Governor Seyi Makinde.

    The passage was sequel to the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Finance, Appropriation and State Economic Planning by its Chairman, Sunkanmi Babaloja (Egbeda)

    The Appropriation Bill was presented to the state legislature on December 5.

    With this development, there is an upward review of N4,226,111,609.60 in the appropriation.

    In the budget, recurrent expenditure for the 2024 appropriation changed from N211,884,445,738.94 presented by the governor to N213,538,475,738.94. 

    For the capital expenditure, the house approved N224,909,402,809.45 as against the N222,337,320,199.85 earlier proposed.

    Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, who presided over the plenary, hailed committee members and other lawmakers who worked hard to ensure early passage of the bill.

    He said the assembly made some upward review of the 2024 Appropriation Bill to reflect the current economic realities and situations in the country, as well as cater for some critical sectors.

    Oyo Assembly clears Makinde’s commissioners

    The Oyo State House of Assembly on Wednesday screened and approved Wasilat Adegoke and Oluwaserimi Ajetumobi as commissioners-designate.

    The approval followed an earlier request by Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday, September 5, seeking the Assembly’s legislative approval for the duo as part of the ongoing composition of the state executive council.

    The state assembly conducted the screening and gave the approval at its Wednesday, September 6, plenary.

    The addition of the two commissioners to the governor’s cabinet takes the tally to 18 having sworn in 16 commissioners earlier in July.

    While fielding questions from lawmakers during the screening, Adegoke, expressing gratitude to the governor said so much has been achieved in the area of youth development and provision of sporting facilities expressing her desire to key into the governor’s vision.

    The commissioner’s designates were not however subjected to serious grilling as the leader of the House, Sanjo Adedoyin in his remark noted that Governor Makinde could not be wrong with his nomination having proved his ability to hunt for talents.

    He urged the house to grant the duo the privilege of taking a bow and leaving the chamber.

    The speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin in his remarks noted that the duo were not subjected to rigorous grilling because they were coming on board afresh adding that the House would give them few months to settle into their offices.

    He hinted that they would be invited afterwards to provide situation reports in their respective ministries. The house however directed the duo to take a bow and go.
