  • When RCCG Empowered 74 Parishioners

    When RCCG Empowered 74 Parishioners

Redeemed Christian Church of God, Overflowing Mega Parish, Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, recently organised a skill-up entrepreneurship training to empower some parishioners. Adetutu Audu reports

The verse of the holy book, which says ‘Faith without work is dead’ together with a knack for humanitarianism may have inspired Pastor Paul Adewunmi, his wife and the entire Redeemed Christian Church of God, Overflowing Mega Parish, Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, when they empowered over 74 parishioners and non-parishioners alike recently. The maiden edition of the programme tagged Skill-Up Entrepreneurship training and competition took place on Wednesday January 20, 2015.

The graduands were trained in fashion design, computer, bead-making, make-up and gele and catering, website design and desktop.   Some of the items doled out to winners and outstanding students were an industrial oven, a laptop, a desktop and website design, a Sewing/weaving machine, a make-up box and kit, a bead box and monetary rewards of N50, 000 each for the seven facilitators of the programme.

Among the dignitaries at the well-attended programme were Provincial Pastor, Lagos Province 14, Pastor Jide Akiode, Pastor Akinrotimi, Pastor and Mrs. Tunji Adebiyi, Pastor Ayibiowu Richard, Pastor Olutayo Ojajuni, and the host, Pastor and Pastor (Mrs.) Paul Adewunmi.

Admonishing the graduands in his message, Pastor Akiode implored participants to see the opportunity as one not to be thrown away. He said, “Opportunity is like a face cap, when it faces you, you grab it from the front because if it passes you by, there is no way to grab it from the back”.

Akiode said a man who is diligent in his work will stand before Kings and not mean men. He advised the graduands to choose diligence, hard work and excellence as their companion, as they go to the larger society, and challenged them to give back to society.

“Vision, hardwork is equal to success, while skill without vision is useless. A man of vision doesn’t fear competition, as your vision determines how hard you work.”

Throwing more light on the Skill-up human capacity development project, the convener and visioner of the programme,  Adewunmi said the project was conceived with the aim of training and empowering raw talents, who are ready to launch out as entrepreneurs. The programme was borne out of Adewunmi and his wife, Anike’s passion to help the needy and add value to the quality of living of Nigerians- whether Christians or non-Christians.

“As the very first season, this project is geared towards developing the skills of participants for the period of two months, after which participants would be expected to embark on a two-week project to develop works that would be perused during the grand finale of the talent hunt show.  Seven winners will emerge winning the grand prize; and 28 others winning complimentary prizes,” he said.

Extolling the virtue of Pastor Adewunmi, one of the graduands, a top retired civil servant who also won a consolidation prize in desktop expertise, Mrs. Okin Anthonia, said she never knew she could use the computer. “I retired as a senior civil servant and throughout my sojourn-though introduced to the computer, I didn’t take it seriously. The reality of what I’d been missing dawned on me when I travelled abroad and wanted to watch a particular programme on-line and my children weren’t around to operate the system. When I learnt about Skill-Up, I applied and today, I can call myself a guru in computer application.”

In her words, prize winner in fashion, Mrs. Martha Aligbe was full of praises to Pastor Adewunmi and his team for impacting her life. According to Aligbe, a business woman, “I am a business woman who used the opportunity offered by Skill-Up programme to broaden my horizon. With my latest acquisition in fashion design, I am not only empowered, I am going out there to impact the upcoming ones. I am grateful for this kind gesture.”

  • RCCG offers Lisa pupils a new lease of life

RCCG offers Lisa pupils a new lease of life

Lisa Village via Ijoko, in Ifo Local government of Ogun State, invokes sad memories of the October 22, 2005 ill-fated Bellview airways crash, which left over 100 passengers dead.

Unknowingly, that crash exposed the utter neglect the area had suffered for several years. But 10 years after, the story of Lisa Village is being re written.

This comes on the heels of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Lagos Province 2, which took it upon itself to establish the first and only primary school at Oke-Ayo in Alapadi community on the outskirts of Lisa village.

    According to Pastor Tope Abe,

The APICP- CSR, RCCG Lagos Province 2, Pastor Tope Abe, recalled that in 2010, the Province, working through the Missions group at Israel Assembly Parish, took interest in making life better for the future generation of the community.

Realising the community had no school in any form, the church single-handedly built a primary school for the growing population of children in the area, who hitherto, had been deprived of education.

Named Divine Champion Primary School, the institution comprises of a block of four classrooms and an office for the staff.

Other facilities in the school include four toilets and water supply system.

The water comes from a well sunk by the Church and an overhead tank into which the water is pumped.

Abe explained that the church’s intervention in the community is holistic.

For instance, he disclosed that the church pays the teachers’ salaries and provides books, stationery and uniforms for the more than 100 pupils in the school.

With the growing students’ population, he pointed out there is a need to build an additional block of classrooms, a challenge Lagos Province 2 is also responding to.

Abe hopes that sooner than later, government will take over the running and the funding of the school from the church, as the population increases further.

  • Embracing CSR, the RCCG example

    Embracing CSR, the RCCG example

Discussions on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) permeate all aspects of human life but the religious domain is often ignored. With the creation of Church/Christian Social Responsibility, a CSR unit of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), religious organisations appear to recognise their roles in human and environmental development of the areas where they operate, write ADEDEJI ADEMIGBUJI and DAVID ADEJO.

Globalisation has influenced churches to be more committed to the social, economic, health and environmental concerns of their members. The government has failed to address some social needs, which dampened social values of citizens. So, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is crossing the border of corporate organisations,  perching on the altar of religious institutions.

By implication, churches have found it worthwhile as a strategy to impact on the society without losing their primary objective-preaching salvation and making heaven. With armies of unemployed graduates, employed, poor populace, among other issues, who seek solutions from divinity, churches are beginning to explore CSR engagement tool as buffer for their congregations.

To enhance better coordination of what some religious scholars also termed, Christian Coporate Social Responsibility (CCSR), some churches, especially those with highest congregation, now set up CSR/Sustainability departments to bind both faith in God and work for the betterment of the society beyond just feeding them with words of God.

During a recent programme, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Province 58, Ikorodu, Lagos organised an empowerment programme for its church members in  demonstration of care for the people who are swamped by social-economic challenges to deal with.

After assessing their needs, the church paraded high profile human capacity development and empowerment professionals from the Bank of Industry (BoI), Fidelity Bank, Capacity Development and Skills Enhancement agencies to empower the church members in other to be job creators.

The Chief Consultant, Capacity Development and Skills Enhancement, an NGO, Odewunmi Olatunji, said the CSR programme of the church had over 700 people who are learning various skills. He said some of them have learnt the business and art of bag making, shoe making, hair making, cinematography, make-ups, gele tying, manicure and pedicure, events management and decoration, catering, among others.

He said the church has trained over 20,000 people since 2011 when the programme was introduced, adding that records have shown that most of them are doing well in their businesses.

Explaining the rationale behind the empowerment programme, the Pastor-in-Charge of the province, Pastor Godwin Obadun, said the buy-in into CSR was occasioned by the state of the economy as a measure to reduce poverty in the country. “We have looked at the situation around us, the only thing we feel we can do to stop poverty is to enhance them with skills that will make them producers and service providers. This is why we have put together this two-week tuition free programme. The General Overseer, Pastor Enoch A. Adeboye, is the owner of this vision. He said: ‘Go out, don’t only preach the gospel, put something in their hands, let them have a job’ and this is what we are trying to do,” he said.

He said further that the church also partnered with BoI to provide access to loans for startups after the training. “We have invited them because in some other programmes we have gone to, after training, the participants don’t have money or the capacity, or tools. We have, however, gone a step further by bringing in the BoI. We have given them tools. There is no way they can liaise with BoI without having an account with a commercial bank, and Fidelity Bank, as we all know, is a leading SME bank in Nigeria. So, we also brought them in to support. The people will not just learn the skills, but also have access to funds so they can start something. We are grateful to BoI and Fidelity Bank for coming. They have also promised to assist everyone,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regional Head of BoI, Mr. Ubaro Marvel Usah, who was at the event,  said the bank is ready to support anyone after the training in other to grow the economy and reduce poverty.

”We are here on the invitation of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). They are having an empowerment programme to educate their members. They want to educate their members on the available products that BoI has which can be used to support their members in terms of empowerment and how we can provide financial support for their teeming members. So, essentially, we are here to tell them the products that are available for SME within BoI, then the requirements of Bank Support Scheme under each of the schemes that we have, and then what we can do to work with them to go and develop business so that we can develop our economy jointly and collectively,” he said.

Besides BoI, the church also brought Fidelity Bank to ease access to loans for the trainees. One of the managers of SMEs for Fidelity Bank, Banksharon Nwaneri, assured the bank also intends to support the church’s CSR drive by getting the understanding that they can receive support to start up.

“There is what we call commercial support overdraft. It provides short-term loans which last for about 30 days and a very market- friendly interest rate that we can make available. We also have the commercial support loan which lasts for 90 days. Then, we have our commercial credit facility that can run for about one year to expand their businesses.

Then they can also access our CBN intervention funds which we work massively in,” she explained.

One of the beneficiaries of the training, who preferred to be called by her first name, Kafayat, said though she doesn’t attend the church, she found the programme impactful.

She said with the training, she can now be her own boss. “I heard about this programme from a friend. I am not a Christian or a member of this church. I came for the registration on Monday (this week), we started the training and now I can do some beads to sell. I also like it because we have the opportunity to borrow from the bank, soft loans with no collateral and little interest to pay,” she said.

In the light of this, a Journal of Business Management and Economics stated the contribution from religious angle is few and peripheral. “Discussions on CSR permeate all aspect of human life –social, economic and environmental domains, but the religious domain is often ignored, perhaps based on the belief that social domain covers religion. The diverse and overlapping debate on CSR is so intense that it elicited criticism that ‘the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a religion filled with priests,” the journal stated.

However, scholars said exploring CSR from religious lenses is justified because religion is now becoming a tool by governments across the world to elicit support for policies and for shaping people’s worldviews.

The rural community which has no functional school buildings was agog with excitement when pastorate of the church, led by the Pastor in the charge of the province, Pastor Olusegun Olujimi alongside members of the church visited the community to commission the amenities for immediate use.

The occasion drew a mammoth crowd to the reserved village which has little or no federal presence in terms of infrastructure.

In his speech, Pastor Olusegun Olujimi said that the gesture was all about fulfilling the scripture to do good and to add value to the lives of the people, adding that the donation was also in line with the mandate given to the church by its General Oversea, Pastor Enoch Adeboye to commence corporate responsibility activities in various communities.

Pastor Olujimi said the aim is to alleviate the sufferings brought upon the masses by absence of basic infrastructure, saying that the church has a responsibility to build society and make it habitable for all.

  • RCCG makes case for health centres in suburbs

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has advocated the building of more healthcare centres in the suburbs of Abuja.

Pastor-in-Charge of the City of David Parish of the RCCG, Abuja, Gbolade Okenla stated this during the church’s medical outreach at Jahi village in the Federal Capital Territory.

He said, “The sum of N2 million for each will go a long way in the construction of primary health centres where locals could attend to their health needs rather than embarking on long distances to access medical care.”

Okenla said this is to fulfill the vision of the General Overseer Enoch Adeboye, that the church must assist communities within their areas of worship, which he referred to its Corporate Social Responsibility.

“We have to go out and minister to our neighbours and show them the true love of Christ. It’s to let everybody know that in whichever community we are we have to contribute in our own little way to help them,” he said.

Dr Edache Adikun Etega, a member of the team of medical doctors and laboratory scientists, who participated in the exercise, identified malaria, hypertension, and diabetes as the main cases observed in the community.

Some of the beneficiaries thanked the church for the exercise while calling on other religious and public-spirited individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture.

I have collected my drugs and I am happy. I want God to continue to reward this church for helping the masses,” says Mr. Musa Salihu Ahmed, an engineer, who was treated for fracture.

Blessing Ogwuche, who also thanked the church for the gesture, called on the government to establish a health centre in the area as the residents usually go to Gwarinpa or Asokoro to access medicare.
