God warned my firstborn would die if I left RCCG — Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said God warned him of grave consequences—specifically the death of his firstborn—if he ever left the RCCG.

Speaking during the June Holy Ghost Service in the early hours of Saturday, at the Redemption City of God in Ogun State, Adeboye shared the revelation while preaching on the theme, “Destined for Greatness (Part 2).”

Highlighting the importance of divine direction and spiritual consistency, Adeboye referenced a sermon by his son, Pastor Leke Adeboye, and lamented the trend of young Christians frequently moving between churches.

“When I got born again, there were three major ministries that were making waves, and they were very good. There were different temptations to go from one to another,” he recalled.

“But God said to me, ‘Son, I brought you here. This is where you will stay. The day you leave this denomination, your firstborn will die.’”

Adeboye recounted how RCCG was relatively obscure at the time, with a modest headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

Despite being a university lecturer, he said God instructed him to submit to a spiritual leader who lacked formal education.

“I was a lecturer at the university. My father in the Lord didn’t go to secondary school, not even primary. But God said this is where you will stay.”

He encouraged youths to seek divine guidance and remain rooted in the place God has ordained for them.

“Discover where God wants you to stay, and stay there,” he advised.

Adeboye clarified that his remarks were not intended to elevate RCCG above other churches.

“I am not saying we are better than any other denomination,” he added.

The same power that raised Jesus from the grave is present here tonight, and we expect miracles and wonders in unprecedented ways,” he declared.

Pastor Funsho Johnson Odesola, RCCG’s Assistant General Overseer and Continental Overseer for Continent Three (Southwest Nigeria and the Middle East), highlighted the significance of praise. “Since the inception of Praise Encounter, I have never missed a single edition. He shared the testimony of God’s grace and mercy in his life at the annual Special Holy Ghost Service with the theme: “Joy Unspeakable”.

Adeboye narrated how he fell critically ill due to terrible road conditions and was forced to spend Christmas Day in bed for the first time in his life.

He said his condition was so severe that he had to be airlifted from Ilesha to the camp but local miscreants attempted to prevent the helicopter from taking off, damaging one of the windows in the process.

Despite this harrowing experience, Adeboye expressed gratitude for God’s benevolence towards him and the ministry.

He attributed his survival to God’s grace and encouraged his congregation to thank God for sparing his life.

He said: “Seven years ago, during this same program, my body broke down completely due to the terrible road conditions. For the first time in my life, I spent Christmas Day in bed. The devil was certain he had finally got me. I collapsed in Ilesha, and to bring me back to the camp, we had to charter a helicopter. I was too weak to travel by road—if I had, I would not have made it.

“They clung to the helicopter, and in the process, one of the windows got torn. But by God’s grace, I managed to reach the camp. I had an assurance that if only I could get to the camp, I would recover. Seven years later, I am still here! I want you to thank God for sparing my life. Please, praise Him for me—give Him glory, honor, and adoration!”
