  • Kaita scores first goal for Enyimba

Kaita scores first goal for Enyimba

The People’s Elephant lost over 20 scoring chances in their Glo Premier League Week 14 tie against Kaduna United at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba and had to rely on the individual brilliance of newly recruited Sani Kaita to conjure up a 1-0 win over the Crocodiles.

The club’s head of media, Farriel Allaputa in a chat with SportingLife shortly after the Aba Millionaires 1-0 victory against Kaduna United harped on the fact that the players  must display enough consistency and resilience to be counted among the title contenders.

He hinted that a situation where they keep on frittering away scoring opportunities that come their way may put the club in a dire situation when the chips are down.

However,   the former Nigeria World Cup star  is being paid by the League Management Company (LMC) in a bid to woo  some of the country’s top stars back from overseas to add glamour to the domestic league.

Kaita, who featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, has signed a short-term loan with six-time champions Enyimba after stints in Holland, France, Ukraine, Greece and Russia.

However, a bid for him to return to Europe after a knee surgery was not successful and he was forced to return to the local league, where  he started out with hometown club Kano Pillars.

A top source informed only AfricanFootball.com: ”The LMC is the one paying Kaita in a bid to encourage other top players who are stranded overseas to return home and add glamour and class to our league.

“Kaita’s presence has already got the fans excited in Aba and we now have packed stadiums when he plays.

However, officials refused to disclose how much the LMC is paying defensive midfielder Kaita, who is best remembered for his dismissal against Greece at the 2010 World Cup.

  • NIALS scores media high

    NIALS scores media high

The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), last week at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre Abuja, conducted media assessment and the contributions of the media to the achievement of its mandate and the vision of its founding fathers within the 35 years of its existence. This programme was part of a week programme to celebrate the achievements of the institution in the last 35 years of its establishment.

Plaques were given to some media houses in appreciation and recognition of their contributions to the achievement of NIALS mandate. The media houses recognised are: The Nation newspaper, Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Vanguard newspapers, Channels Television and Daily Trust newspaper.

NIALS’ Director-General, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN) expressed gratitude to the media for its support to the Institute and contributions to the course of nation building. He noted that without the active and massive support of the media, the Institute would not have discharged its mandate creditably within the period under review.

He praised the objectivity, investigative and analytical virtues of the media, noting that there is room for improvements.

Introducing the programme, a Research Fellow with the Institute, Laura Ani said: “The Institute is organising a week anniversary celebration to mark its service to scholarship and education in Nigeria. The Institute, more than any institution in the field of law, has contributed to the development of scholarship, education and capacity building for the legal profession in Nigeria, Africa and beyond. Therefore, the Institute has acquitted itself of that mandate and the vision of its founding fathers.”

She continued: “Today’s event is three-fold, firstly we have the social media assessment of NIALS contributions to national development, the purpose of this assessment is to access our media temperature by auditing our social media impact on the society. This will be determined by measuring our growth, engagement, trend awareness, likes and subscribes on the likes of facebook, twitter and of course, our website.

“Most importantly, this will be a highly interactive session where we require contributions from all media houses here present both print, electronic and the general public. At the end we hope to determine where we are, where we want to go and how to achieve this.

“Secondly we would be having the media awards to formally celebrate with our media partners and lastly the public presentation of all NIALS publications as well as a report on our research projects.”

The best supporting electronic media award was given to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) while the best supporting print media award went to The Nation newspaper. Channels Television received the most friendly media house award while the best supporting law correspondent award went to John Austin Unachukwu of The Nation newspaper.

Vera Chinwuba of the NTA received the most distinguished law personality award while Femi Okeowo also of NTA received the most efficient law journalist award.

Outstsnding NIALS media friends awards went to Adenlanwa Olukorede Bamgboye, Shola Adeko Sholeye and Innocent Chikwaraeze Anaba

The event was attended by former Directors-General of the Institute including, Prof. Ayo Ajomo, Prof. Ignatius Ayua and a host of Professors from the institute and outside the Institute.

CSKA Moscow have defeated Yenisei 3 – 0 in the quarter finals of the Cup of Russia. Nigeria winger Ahmed Musa was on target for the Army Men after 65 minutes.

Ahmed Musa lasted 72 minutes on the pitch before he was replaced by Bazelyuk. He has netted 11 goals in all competitions in the 2012 – 2013 campaign.

Musa wants a league and cup double in Russia after he helped CSKA Moscow reach the Russian cup semi-final on Wednesday.

“I am happy to score in this game and help my team reach the semi-final of the cup. My target has been on winning the league but getting to semi-final of the Russian cup means I can win a double,” Musa told MTNFootball.com.

“I will be glad to have both trophies at the end of the season.”

Musa has scored two goals in the cup this season and nine goals in the league.

CSKA lead the Russia league with 56 points, six points ahead of second-placed and champions Zenit St.Petersburg with six games to go.

  • Etebor scores 1st NPFL hat-trick

    Etebor scores 1st NPFL hat-trick

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) recorded its first hat-trick of the season as Oghenekaro Etebor fired three goals past El-Kanemi for Warri Wolves to claim their first three points after it mauled the Warriors from Maiduguri 4-1 on match day 7.

SportingLife gathered that Wolves showed no mercy on their prey as within a minute and 48 seconds, Etebor found the net to put the Solomon Ogbeide-led side up by a goal.

It was if the players had adhered to Ogbeide’s warning after his clear-the-air meeting with Amaju Pinnick over the abysmal form of the team since the kick-off of the season as nearly into the first quarter of the game, Wolves scored their second goal via Etebor.

With Wolves taking full control of the game, Joseph Osadiya then got his name on the goals scorers’ sheet as the Warri City team went three goals up within 22 minutes of play, leaving the visitors to resort to another game plan.

As the clock ticked into the half hour mark, Etebor completed his hat-trick in the 34th minute to put the game beyound the reach of the relegation-threatened El-Kanemi who later pulled one back. This was however too little too late as the game ended 4-1.

  • NBA scores election low

The awareness for last Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council poll was not adequate, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) said yesterday.

It urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work towards using electronic voting machines for efficiency.

Briefing reporters in Abuja, the Chairman of the NBA’s Election Working Group (NBA EWG), Dafe Akpedeye (SAN), said the election was characterised by low turnout of voters and disenfranchisement.

He said the officials and polling materials arrived late in most polling units in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

This, he said, was in contrast to the majority of the suburbs where electoral materials were distributed early.

Said he: “It was recorded in Kukwaba Polling Unit 003 that form EC 60E was not available at the time of voting. This form is essential for returning voting results.

“In a polling unit in Karu, near the old NEPA junction, there were complaints that the United Progressive Party’s (UPP’s) logo was missing in the councillors’ election, but our team observed that the logo was visible during the chairmanship poll.

“Our team of observers also reported cases in Kuje, AMAC and Gwagwalada area councils where some accredited voters were not allowed to vote because after being accredited, they left and returned when voting had started.”

Akpedeye cited a polling unit in Area 11 with 2,419 registered voters, but only 29 voters were accredited and voted.

He said: “In Garki II, NNPC main gate polling unit had 658 registered persons on the voters’ list. At 3pm, no voter turned up for accreditation, although the INEC officials and security agents were present.

“In Abaji and Bwari area councils, there were cases where some voters with voter identification cards, who could not find their names on the registers, were not accredited. In some other cases, voters, who had lost their voter cards and were able to trace their serial numbers, were not accredited.

“Some of the polling units were haphazardly located, especially on the outskirts. They were located under trees in some areas where schools were located not far away from trees. This was inconvenient for the voters and umpires, thereby making accreditation of voters cumbersome and problematic.

“Our team also observed the presence of under-aged people loitering around the polling units.

“Civic education was lacking on the part of the parties. We noted that there were cases of the elderly and the illiterate voting without a clue as to who was being voted for and for what purpose.”

The observer group recommended that the Electoral Act 2010 as amended should be further amended to give presiding officers the discretion to create a separate queue for the elderly.

It said: “Some of them could not cope with the harsh weather and the surging crowd. The creation of a separate queue for the elderly will encourage them to remain engaged with the electoral process and encourage them to perform their civic responsibility.”

AT least one person was killed and over 20 others injure in the aftermath of a late night clash involving rival gangs of social miscreants in Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos State on Monday.

The clash was allegedly triggered by rivalry between thugs from Memudu and Savage streets.

It was learnt that the thugs seized the opportunity to rob innocent residents and vandalise vehicles parked on the road side.

The casualty, whose identity could not be verified yesterday, was allegedly stabled several times.

When contacted on the telephone, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

Braide, who confirmed the arrest of five people, said the police was yet to ascertain the identity of the deceased.

She said: “Around 9:45pm, some groups of thugs engaged in a supremacy battle in Coker area of Orile. Policemen rushed to the scene and on arrival, it was observed that the streets were littered with pebbles and all the vehicles were vandalised.

“On sighting the police, the hoodlums took to their heels. The corpse of a man (about 27years), suspected to have participated in the mayhem was seen lying in a pool of blood with severe machete cuts.

“Five male suspects were arrested while some cutlasses and a locally made shot gun recovered. The injured were later referred to hospitals and the corpse deposited at Yaba General Hospital mortuary for autopsy. Normalcy has since returned while policemen are still patrolling the area.
