When will Ajimobi, Shittu sheathe their swords?

The cold war between Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and the Minister of Communications has polarised the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN examines the implication of the feud on the party’s fortune ahead of 2019.

The supremacy contest between Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, over the structure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a new twist. Shittu is seeking the APC governorship ticket to succeed Ajimobi, who will complete his eight year tenure in May next year. The minister’s ambition to rule Oyo State pre-dates the APC era. He contested the governorship election in 2011 on the platform of the Centre for Progressive Change (CPC) the same platform on which President Muhammadu Buhari contested 2011 presidential poll. The CPC was one of the political parties that coalesced into the APC.

The feud between Ajimobi and the minister became pronounced when President Buhari announced Shittu as Oyo State nominee in the Federal Executive Council (FEC). This did not go down well with Ajimobi, who consider Shittu as a political rival. It was learnt that the governor felt slighted by the appointment because he was not consulted by the President as the leader of the APC in Oyo State. The Ajimobi group viewed Shittu’s appointment as an attempt by the presidency to prepare him for governorship office in 2019.

The Ajimobi camp allegedly did everything possible to stall Shittu’s confirmation. Open letters and petitions were written against Shittu. Several newspaper advertorials sponsored by faceless groups were published just to stop Shittu from being confirmed by the Senate. But Shittu sailed through.

In what many people considered as a rare gesture, Ajimobi organised a reception for Shittu at Kakanfo Inn, Ibadan. Observers were taken unaware by the governor’s action. He proved those who thought he would have nothing to do with Shittu wrong. The impression created by the reception was that the fight had ended.

But, subsequent events have proved it was not. The two gladiators have not sheathed their swords. On many occasions, Shittu had accused the governor of trying to hijack the party and vowed to stop him. Though Ajimobi would not react personally to such allegations, his loyalists, to denounced Shittu’s allegations. The face-off degenerated to the extent that the minister alleged his inability to defend his ministry’s budget properly before the House of Representatives committee headed by a loyalist of Ajimobi. He described his experience with the committee as a proxy war.

The minister has incurred the wrath of the Ajimobi political camp by accepting a chieftaincy title conferred on him by the Olubadan of Ibadan land Oba Salihu Adetunji. Though analysts say there was nothing wrong in Olubadan honouring Shittu but that the timing that was inauspicious. A sociologist, Dr Kunle Oyedeji said the conferment of the chieftaincy title on Shittu has political undertone. Why should the minister an arch-rival of Ajimobi be honoured at the heat of controversy between the governor and the Olubadan over the crowning of 21 chiefs? He concluded that by accepting the chieftaincy, Shittu had pitched his tent with the Olubadan, a development that has further deepened the crisis between him and the governor.

Besides, the crisis was aggravated by the demolition of a Computer Based Test Centre being constructed by Shittu in his home town, Saki, in Oyo North by the Oyo State government. This prompted the minister to write a petition to President Buhari, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief Odigie Oyegun and the APC Natioanal Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on what he described the “unbecoming” behaviour of the governor.

Shittu stated in the petition that as his relationship with the governor deteriorated, he arranged a meeting at the Oyo State Government House, Abuja where two of them met to resolve existing misgivings. “At the meeting, I also mentioned to the Governor the outstanding issue of a Computer Based Test Centre under construction in Saki, which has become a subject of dispute between me and the local government. I requested for his kind intervention to see to the success of the project which to all intents and purposes would not only assist examination candidates in my hometown but would also be a boost to our party. The governor promised to intervene and lay the matter to rest, for which I expressed my appreciation for his brotherly promise”.

He said few days after he called the governor on phone to thank him for the reception and understanding on the issues discussed. During the telephone conversation, the governor reassured that he would provide official documents to revalidate his ownership of the land on which the CBT Centre was being constructed. The following day, the minister said he received a shocking news that agents of the state government invaded the site with a bulldozer that levelled the centre under construction and destroyed over 2,000 blocks on site.

But, a Town Planning official said the building was demolished because there was dispute over the ownership of the land on which the CBT was being constructed. The official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the demolition was not instigated by the governor. We don’t wait for the governor’s instruction in enforcing the town planning rules and regulations.

Although the governor had not responded to Shittu’s petition, an indication that both of them are not in good terms played out when the governor stayed away from the commissioning of the Southwest Zonal Office of the Muhammadu Buhari Osinbajo (MBO) Dynamic Support  Group initiated by Shittu. Instead Ajimobi organised a sensitisation rally on local government election at the APC Secretariat in Ibadan. While all the Chairmanship and councillorship aspirants were at the rally, Shittu waited endlessly for the governor and other party officials for the commissioning of the office.

The absence of Ajimobi and party officials embarrassed former Abia State Govenor Orji Uzor Kalu and former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, who were among special guests invited by Shittu for the inauguration of the office. Kalu could not hide his displeasure over the development when he said: “If anybody in this house today would say it is good for these two elephants to continue quarrelling, I and my senior brother (Senator Nnamani) would disagree that they should be quarrelling. The minister and the governor should be the best of friends, and we are going to make that happen.

“I cannot understand. The minister is very close to me and the governor is very close to me. They are also close to Ken Nnamani. We came here to honour both of them. I am not very happy with what I have seen here, that the governor is not here, the party officials are not here, the Commissioners are not here.

“The minister and the governor should be the best of friends and we are going to make that happen. If both of them should be quarrelling, there will be no peace and progress in this state. We don’t want to lose any vote in Oyo State. We have already agreed that we are going to take it upon ourselves to the highest of our party so that the leadership should wade into the internal crisis in  Oyo State between Governor Ajimobi and the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu in order not to jeopardise the chances of the APC  in the 2019 elections.

With the growing animosity, can the minister win the APC governorship ticket without Ajimobi’s support?

The governor had expressed support for the Oke-Ogun zone to produce the next governor in 2019. Analysts say it was this undertaken that excited Shittu to believe he has the governor’s support. He had declared himself as the most qualified and experienced among the governorship aspirants from Oke-Ogun because of his experience in governance, having served as commissioner and now a minister.

But Ajimobi support for Oke-Ogun stemmed from the massive support he got from the area in 2015 governorship election Ajimobi said: “I can recall vividly that during the 2015 governorship election, I won nine out of the ten local governments in Oke-Ogun, and this aided my emergence as the first governor to secure second term in office in Oyo State. Without prejudice to the competence and legitimacy of other aspirants from other zones nursing the ambition of succeeding me, I can say the people of Oke-Ogun deserve my support.”

The support is with a caveat. Ajimobi advised the Oke-Ogun people to seek support from other zones. You must win them over to win a governorship election. For instance, Ibadan people alone constitute about 52 per cent of the population and Ajimobi is an Ibadan man.

Analysts blamed Shittu for allowing his relationship with the governor to degenerate at this crucial time when he needs his support. Public affairs commentator Ayo Ololade said the minister goofed in confronting the governor, who could have helped him in winning the party’s governorship ticket. According to him, you can’t rule out the governor’s influence on who wins the party primary.

He said: “The governor controls the party machinery; most of the delegates that would vote at the shadow election are loyal to the governor. The governor appoints party chairmen and executive members at the local government level; members of the state executive council, chairmen and board members of state parastatals and agencies. These political appointees will form the bulk of delegates that will vote at the primary.

“The number of delegates from Oke-Ogun zone where Shittu comes from will not be enough for him to win the ticket even if all delegated from the zone decide to cast their votes for him. Oke-Ogun controls 21 per cent of the total voting strength compared to Ibadan’s 52 per cent. It seems Shittu is banking on President Buhari to influence his emergence as the APC candidate. This will not work because the APC members in Oyo State will choose the delegates. Shittu should learn from his immediate mistake on the inauguration of the Southwest Buhari/Osinbajo re-election office which was poorly attended due to the obvious crisis between him and the governor. You can’t handle such a programme successfully in isolation of the Oyo State APC and South West APC stalwarts.

“I am not saying Shittu should turn into Ajimobi’s stooge because he wants to be governor but he should be less controversial in his quest to succeed the governor. I don’t expect him to allege the governor of trying to hijack the party. The governor is the leader of the party in the state; he controls the party structure. To say he has hijacked the party structure is stating the obvious. It is not too late for Shittu to normalise his relationship with the governor if he is convinced that Ajimobi will beneficial to his course.”

However, an APC stalwart, who spoke in confidence noted that the feud didn’t start today; both the governor and Shittu have been political arch rivals. He recalled that Shittu was the CPC governorship candidate in 2011 while Ajimobi contested on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and won. Shittu was able to garner about 2,000 votes because CPC was not popular in the South West. He said the rivalry became pronounced when President Buhari announced Shittu as Oyo State nominee in the Federal Executive Council without Ajimobi’s consent. Ajimobi supporters did everything possible to rubbish Shittu but they didn’t succeed. What is happening now is a continuation of the battle of supremacy in Oyo APC, he said.

“One thing is certain Shittu will contest for the APC governorship ticket with or without Ajimobi’s support. What I don’t know is whether Shittu will emerge or whether Ajimobi can thwart Shittu’s governorship ambition.”

  • Ajimobi versus Shittu: Who blinks first?

SIR: The feud between Governor Abiola Ajimobi and Communications Minister- Adebayo Shittu is assuming an interesting dimension. It is interesting in the sense that they are both of the same All Progressives Congress, APC. And they were once ‘friends’.

Recently, Ajimobi and state officials of the APC who were ‘scheduled’ to be at the commissioning of Southwest Zonal Office of the Muhammadu Buhari Osinbajo, MBO, Dynamic Support Group set up by Shittuý, stayed away. Unknown to Shittu, a ‘sensitization rally’ had been hurriedly put together for the same day. Ajimobi thought well; he knew APC members would want to listen to him on local government election. Let’s clap for Ajimobi’s ‘political desk’ chaired by Dr. Morohunkola Thomas for that wonderful idea.

Anyway, the two events held simultaneously, ‘successfully’, at two different locations. While all the councillorship and chairmanship aspirants were at Oke-Ado, Shittu’s ‘invited guests’ waited endlessly for the Koseleri governor. This was after Ajimobi had provided his jeep for his former legislative colleague- Sen. Ken Nnamani, who was invited for Shittu’s programme.

Meanwhile, few days to the event, Shittu had ‘reported’ Ajimobi to Buhari, Odigie-Oyegun and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for what he called Ajimobi’s ‘highhandedness’ in the running of the affairs of the party. Unhappy with the statement, caretaker chairmen of the 18 Oke Ogun Local Government and local council development areas where Shittu hails, ‘attacked’ the minister, saying his ‘action is injurious to the APC’. Not done, APC publicity secretary fired another salvo, saying Shittu’s governorship ambition is driving him mad.

The feud didn’t start today; it became pronounced when President Buhari announced Shittu as Oyo State nominee in the Federal Executive Council, FEC. Ajimobi allegedly did everything possible to stall the confirmation. Open letters and petitions were written against Shittu. Newspapers got advertorial upon advertorial, just to discredit the Saki-born lawyer. They all fell on deaf ears. Shittu sailed through. Not to be outshone, Ajimobi quickly organised a reception for Shittu. You remember that event at Kakanfo Inn where Shittu wore ‘mint green’ lace agbada with a black glove to match?

For many people, the fight had ended. But it was not. Shittu would later accuse the governor of trying to ‘hijack’ the party, assuring that he would prevent such action. Ajimobi would not reply personally. His ‘boys’ – through faceless – chose to. It degenerated to the extent that the minister described his alleged inability to ‘properly’ defend his ministry’s budget at the House of Representatives committee level headed by Saheed Akinade-Fijabi to a proxy war. He, however, didn’t say who ‘sponsored’ the two-term lawmaker to fight himý.

It would be recalled that Ajimobi presented the state excos of the party with a ‘tear rubber’ Toyota bus few weeks after the minister ýdonated two ‘refurbished’ buses to the party. When rumours had it that Ajimobi wanted to use his Oke-Ado house, which houses Oyo APC, for a bakery project, Shittu was said to have consulted property experts to help get a ‘befitting office’ for the party.

But why is that after many reconciliatory moves within and outside the state, between the duo, they have failed to sheath their swords? ýNot long ago, both elder statesmen said they were friends, especially since 2007 and till date, there is no sign that the two are ready for reconciliation.

Both are known to be brave and courageous. Few months ago, Ajimobi, while on a condolence visit to a party leader in Okeho, headquarters of ýKajola Local Government, said he would want an Oke-Ogun man to succeed him but not like ‘some people. This action, many argued, is a veil reference to the minister. Shittu, on the other hand, has never failed to tell those who care to listen that he will succeed Ajimobi as governor.

One thing that is sure: Shittu will contest the 2019 governorship election, whether in APC or elsewhere. From when he was the ‘Bayo-we-can-trust’ to the ‘Bayo-we-trust’, he has always been contesting, even without any financial war chest. One thing I don’t know is whether Shittu can stop Ajimobi’s bid to ‘hijack’ the party; or, whether Ajimobi can thwart Shittu’s guber bid.

  • Reconcile Ajimobi and Shittu, Kalu, Nnamani, others tell Buhari

Chieftains of the All Progressive Congress (APC) yesterday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to reconcile Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi and Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu.

They said the rift between the duo could affect the fortunes of APC in the state.

Led by former Senate President Ken Nnamani; former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu and others, the chieftains said the party must ensure reconciliation to promote peace and progress.

They spoke yesterday at the inauguration of the Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo (MBO) Dynamic Support Group Southwest Zonal Office in Ibadan.

Others at the event were Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole; Deputy Chairman Southwest, Chief Pius Akinyelure; Postmaster General of the Federation, Bisi Adegbuyi; National Coordinator, Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group, Usman Ibrahim and South West Zonal Coordinator of the organisation, Lateef Olawumi among others.

Leading the call for the unity of the political big wigs in the state, Nnamani noted the party must eschew the politics of bitterness and rivalry but accommodate others for progress.

According to him: “As members of one family, we must try and eschew every form of bitterness and excessive anger because nobody does anything right in anger or bitterness.

“The same thing if you are speaking and you speak with anger, you are likely to say things you will regret later.”

Kalu did not hide his disappointment with the level of disagreement between the governor and minister whom he both described as “two elephants”.

He warned that the fight which resulted in the absence of the governor, his aides and even the state party leadership will only make the “grass suffers”

He promised to take the matter to the highest level along with Nnamani to ensure amicable resolution.

The former governor said: “”I cannot understand why the minister is very close to me and the governor is very close to me. They are also very close to Ken Nnamani. We came here to honour both of them. I am slightly not very happy what I have seen here that the governor is not here, the party officials are not here, the commissioners are not here, and they are the main things that will make APC what it is and they are supposed to be here please, but they are not here.”

  • Oke-Ogun council chiefs tackle Shittu over claims on Oyo APC

Oke-Ogun council chiefs tackle Shittu over claims on Oyo APC

Chairmen of the 10 local governments and Local Council Development Authority (LCDAs) in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, have accused the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, of causing tension and disaffection in the state All Progressives Congress (APC).

They said the minister’s actions “are injurious to the success of the party”.

Shittu hails from Saki in Oke-Ogun.

The chairmen noted that contrary to Shittu’s claim in a petition to the national leadership of the party that the fortunes of the party “has nose-dived,” they said APC, under the leadership of Governor Abiola Ajimobi “has continued to wax stronger and has become the only hope for the masses in the state as a result of the visionary leadership provided by the governor”.

In a statement by the caretaker chairmen of Iwa LCDA and Oorelope Local Government Area, Sulaimon Ajani and Okunlade Samuel, for others, the chairmen said Shittu’s actions and utterances had been generating undue tension and promoting bitterness within Oyo APC.

They noted that “the minister’s actions, rather than the governor’s, have, indeed, been destroying the APC.”

They added: “We, the chairmen of the 10 local governments in Oke-Ogun, which Alhaji Adebayo Shittu hailed from, have watched with bewilderment the unguarded utterances and negative tendencies of the minister in unnecessarily opposing the governor and the progress of the party.

“We would not have joined issues with the minister for his baseless and apparently false claim that the governor has been creating divisions in the APC and destroying the party, but there is need to set the record straight so that the national leadership of the party will know that it is the minister who has been disrupting the peace in the party with his actions and utterances.

  • Olubadan installs Shittu as Agbaakin Fiwajoye

Olubadan installs Shittu as Agbaakin Fiwajoye

Amidst tight security, the Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Saliu Adetunji yesterday installed Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu as Agbaakin Fiwajoye of Ibadanland at his Popoyemoja palace, Ibadan.

There had been apprehensions since news of the installation hit town.

True to their threats, the 21 new Obas were conspicuously absent at the event.

There was heavy security at the palace vicinity while guest were only allowed in after thorough checks.

Plain- clothed detectives, armed police, the state anti- crime patrol teams, members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were all positioned at strategic positions to ensure law and other

Several family members, friends and political associates of the Saki-born politician honoured him with their presence.

Shittu, who arrived Olubadan palace in the company of his wife and family members in a Black Toyota Land cruiser, was ushered into the palace to pay home to Chiefs before the installation ceremony.

After being decorated with the Akoko leave and traditional bead with in pendant with the inscription “Agbaakin Fiwajoye of Ibadanland”, the minister, who was claded in his blue traditional agbada, expressed appreciation to the Olubadan for the honour bestowed on him.

  • Shittu: EFCC not owing me

LAGOS lawyer and university teacher Wahab Shittu has denied a report that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) owed him legal fees.

He said the report gave the wrong impression about his letter to EFCC’s Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu.

Shittu said in a statement: “My attention has just been drawn to a publication contained in The Nation of Tuesday, September 19, 2017 titled: ‘Shittu to EFCC: pay me’.

“I have no problem whatsoever with my client EFCC on payment of fees as payments due to me are promptly paid for services rendered to the commission.

“At any rate, my commitment to the war against corruption is not informed principally by pecuniary benefits but mainly for service to country.

“Consequently, the impression created by the story is erroneous and ought to be promptly corrected for records.”

Shittu said the letter on which the story was based was to show that a significant suit seeking Magu’s removal had been voluntarily withdrawn by the plaintiffs to support his commitment to the anti-corruption war.

“Unfortunately, the objective was not established by the erroneous impression created in the referred story.

“It is perhaps no longer news that I am firmly committed to the retention of Mallam Ibrahim Magu as the EFCC helmsman.

“This commitment is not for pecuniary reasons but for reasons of his track records of performance and passion against corruption in our country. This has not and cannot change since the status quo remains,” Shittu said.

  • I’ll succeed Ajimobi in 2019, says Shittu

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has said he will succeed Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2019.

Addressing reporters in Ibadan, the state capital, after a meeting with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Egbeda Local Government Area and Ajorosun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Shittu, who is a governorship aspirant, said he would take over from Ajimobi to improve on the governor’s record.

The minister said he is the most experienced of the aspirants, having held several public offices and learnt politics from the Premier of the defunct Western Region, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He said: “I was a member of the State House of Assembly in 1979 and two-time commissioner in the state. I have also contested the governorship seat in the state twice before I became a minister.

“These are experiences you cannot buy. Oyo is too advanced and sophisticated to be handled by inexperienced administrators.”

Shittu dismissed the re-alignment in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party was a non-starter at state and federal levels.

The minister noted that 38 road contractors had abandoned work two years before President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office.

He said the development contributed to unemployment, as workers, including labourers, bricklayers and iron benders, were sacked.

According to him, the PDP administration’s negligence and incompetence in handling the Boko Haram insurgency at inception led to the escalation of the problem to the current security challenges facing the country.

  • Amosun, Shittu, others for Ilese Day

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his Ekiti State counterpart, Ayodele Fayose, are among dignitaries expected at this year’s Ilese Day and carnival celebration at Ilese-Ijebu in Ogun State.

Communications Minister Alhaji Adebayo Shittu is the guest of honour.

Former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and his Ekiti State counterpart, Segun Oni, are also expected.

A marathon has been added to the celebration, a yearly weeklong activities designed to mobilise the people to develop their town.

From 6:30 a.m today, the marathon, billed to attract youths from Ilese and adjoining communities, will start at the Ibadan Motor Park in Ijebu-Ode and pass through Lagos Park, Epe Park, Oke Owa and terminate at Ilese Central Mosque.

  • We’ll make Buhari go for second term, says Shittu

We’ll make Buhari go for second term, says Shittu

Communications Minister Adebayo Shittu has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s top supporters will persuade him to run for a second term in 2019.

Shittu spoke yesterday in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, while featuring as a guest on the Breakfast Chat with Southwest Group of Online Publishers (SWEGOP).

The minister hails from Oyo State.

Justifying the efforts Shittu said President Buhari has delivered on his campaign promises of tackling insurgency and other forms of criminal violence, corruption and reviving the economy.

According to him, the President is a success in the three key areas, particularly with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo sustaining his legacies in his absence.

President Buhari is on a medical vacation in London, England.

Shittu said there is no need for President Buhari to stop the good work he is doing, adding that a four-year tenure is not enough to overhaul the Nigerian system.

He said: “It is in the interest of Nigeria. We have had in this country series of administrations in the last 18 years. But what did we have to show for it? We know that Nigeria was brought to its knees because of the level of corruption. It is also because governance had not been focused on value-added services. It had been an era of impunity.

“Impunity leads to disorderliness, lawlessness and cheating on the masses of the people. But we have a President who committed himself to a three-point agenda of fighting corruption, insecurity and to repair the economy. Everybody will agree that the fight on corruption has been sustained and the era of impunity has been banished under President Buhari.

  • Educate Muslims on their rights, Shittu, Don urges lawyers

Minister of Communications Adebayo Shittu and Prof. Abdulwahab Egbewole of the University of Ilorin, have advised Muslim lawyers to educate and assist Muslims on their fundamental rights.

The duo gave the advice in Ibadan during the 20th Annual Ramadan Lecture organised by Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria (MULAN), Oyo State.

Shittu urged Muslims to seek more knowledge on the practice of the religion.

He also urged Muslim lawyers to support Muslims in pursuing their fundamental rights, adding the constitution of Nigeria guaranteed rights of individual to practice their religion.

Shittu called on Nigerian youths to key into the N-Power scheme of the federal government, which he said would soon engage another 300, 000 graduates.

Egbewole, in a lecture entitled Fundamental Human Rights in Nigeria: A Myth or Reality stated that Muslims needed to be educated on the three generations of rights provided by law.

He explained that such rights include the right of Muslims to practice their religion in line with Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution.

“This right as guaranteed by the constitution could only be achieved through the principles of Islamic Law.’’

Egbewole said Islamic law was a complete way of life that regulates the affairs of Muslims.

He explained that the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution were rooted in Islam, adding that the prescriptions of Islam are more comprehensive.

“This means that Muslims can realise their right to freedom of religion using the same constitutional provisions. Muslims have not engaged the law enough to the extent of realising fully their guaranteed rights,” he said.

Egbewole, who is the Director, General Studies of the university, noted that recent wrangling over the use of hijab by Muslims was unnecessary as it did not infringe on other’s rights.

The university don stressed that Muslims lawyers must engage more in pro bono services for the purpose of making fundamental rights truly available to the Muslims.

“Muslims should agitate for their rights through dialogue,” he added.

MULAN Oyo State Chapter Chairman Akeem Adetunji, said the association had in the last one year had provided free legal services to the needy.
