Shittu battles Oyo APC to retain nomination

The ministerial nominee for Oyo State has begun moves to stave off opposition by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was gathered that Adebayo Shittu took his case to traditional rulers in Oke-Ogun, urging them to prevail on APC leaders because “if he loses the slot, it will never come back to Oke-Ogun “.

A source, who pleaded for anonymity, told The Nation that Shittu chose to play the ethnic card because he viewed it as a strong weapon that could cow his opponents.

According to the source, no monarch or kinsman would be comfortable with such alleged plan to take a ministerial slot away from his domain.

But he added that party leaders had been educating the monarchs that the case was beyond individuals or sentiment, stressing that all leaders and members would align with the party’s position.

The source said the party would prefer a substitute, who is a core party member and a team player from Oke-Ogun .

He added: “He has been reaching out to monarchs in our area, telling them that the APC opposed his nomination because the party does not want the slot to come to Oke-Ogun.

“He is prompting them to prevail on the party, particularly APC leaders in Oke-Ogun, to drop their opposition because his service will be beneficial to the people.

“He said the party would prefer to take the slot to another zone if he is dropped. But we have been telling them that party members will align with the decision of the party.

“We have told them that it is neither an Oke-Ogun nor a particular person’s matter.  The party wants a core member of the APC who is committed to the party.

“His substitute can even come from Oke-Ogun. What is important is that the candidate should be the party’s choice or at least, someone who is not against the party.“

Party members and leaders, particularly in Oke-Ogun where Shittu hails from, have been opposing his nomination since the ministerial list came out last week.

They contend that Shittu did not support the APC in the last election.

In his reaction, Shittu, a former commissioner, described the party’s position as misleading.

He maintained that the content of the open letter published in national newspapers yesterday against him by the Oyo APC was a list of intra-party squabbles, some of which President Muhammadu Buhari intervened to resolve.

Describing his nomination as one of the best things to happen to Oyo State, he said his was the first time a thorough-bred would be nominated to represent the state.

He challenged party officials to produce the results of the last elections in their wards and local governments and compare them those to his Saki West Local Government.

The protest, notwithstanding, he said he had no ill-feeling against anybody.

Oyo APC rejects Shittu for minister

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the nomination of Mr Adebayo Shittu  from the state for minister.

The party, in a statement yesterday, said Shittu would not serve the interest of the people, adding that he is not a team player.

The statement reads: “The State Working Committee (SWC) of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State met on October 1 and resolved as follows:

“That President Muhammadu Buhari deserves commendation for beginning to lead the campaign for laying a foundation for the desired change by Nigerians through his enviable leadership within a short period that his administration was inaugurated.

“That we pledge our unalloyed loyalty and support for the national leadership and levels of our great party while at the same time appreciate the followership for their cooperation in repositioning our dear country.

“That we like to appreciate the fact that going by the 2015 presidential election results, Oyo State performed creditable in terms of contribution of votes to the overall success of our party, in ranking, Oyo State came first in the Southwest with 528,620 votes, third position in the whole South and seventh in the whole federation. Similarly, we won all the three senatorial seats and 12 of 14 House of Representative seats too. This we considered no mean feat.

“Surprisingly, however, our performance has not been commensurately rewarded at the national level.  For instance, Your Excellency, the current power matrix shows that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives hails from Osun State while the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue is a Lagosian. Both in the Senate and House of Representatives, no lawmaker from Oyo State heads any committees that had so far been constituted.

“Your Excellency, sir, the recent media reports of the ministerial nominees from Oyo State in person of Barrister Adebayo Shittu has further compounded our political challenges because of the unacceptability and rejection by the vast majority of our people.

“He is not a team player. Despite the fact that he and his cohorts were fully accommodated in the APC, he exhibited a cantankerous and uncooperative attitude in his relationship with the party and its leadership, which was uncalled for. We can recall that our amiable governor appointed his one-time female running mate as a senior special assistant (SSA) political matters till May 28. Also, the state chairman of CPC as well as the state secretary of the ANPP were equally given commissionership slot in Oyo State. This is a further demonstration of the fact that the state APC does not believe in a winner-takes-all or zero-sum kind of politics.

“It is curious to note that Barrister Shittu refused to bluntly participate in all party activities including campaigns except on one occasion of the presidential rally in Ibadan. Till date, he has refused to participate in party activities or feature in any governmental programmes at all levels.

  • Shittu: Buhari’s on rescue mission

    Shittu: Buhari’s on rescue mission

Adebayo Shittu, a lawyer, was the Oyo State governorship candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) in 2007 and 2011 elections. In this interview with Jeremiah Oke, he speaks on the Buhari administration and the challenges facing the Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC.

Why did you take your party to court?

The original intention of the parties that came together to form the APC was to be equal partners, particularly when it comes to constituting the executives at both national and state levels. But, that principle was not adhered to. If you look at the party’s caretaker committee at inception, you will see that CPC was not fairly represented. I am particularly concerned about the composition of the executives in Oyo State, which is my primary constituency. We were sidelined by the governor and other party stakeholders. Before the party congress, the governor invited us and urged us to agree with some arrangements of the party and that he would find ways to compensate those of us in CPC and ANPP. He said he doesn’t want elections to hold and that members of the executives would be adopted by consensus. As a result, some members of ANPP had to leave the party for Labour party because they felt marginalised. Myself and numerous of CPC supporters elected to remain in the party because of our commitment to General Buhari. I cannot lead my supporters out of the party because I have been with Buhari for decades. As a member of the merger committee, I participated actively in bringing about the birth of APC. So, no one can chase me out of the party. Now, our agitation is that since most of the ANPP members have left the fold, we in the CPC should be given 40 per cent of the positions at various levels, starting from ward, local government and state level because we are all over the place. But, the governor refused, arguing that some people might still come up to claim that they belong to the defunct ANPP. Rather, he said he would other ways to take care of us. Unfortunately for us, we did not agree on a specific percentage. The governor gave us his words, but he added that nobody should think the APC is his own property. Secondly, he said the chapter would be fair to our members, particularly by rotating of chairmanship and secretary position within the merged parties. Thirdly, he said if any leader of ACN brings any list which is unfair to us, he will correct it by himself. But, here we are today, no fair play. We are now calling on the national working committee to help us in Oyo State.

Did you approach the national executive before you resorted to the court action?

Yes, I did. I went to court after writing the national leadership without reply. I discovered that the governor was untouchable then. But, now that the party is reviewing and settling issues in-house, I believe so much in the leadership, especially President Buhari, Senator Bola Tinubu, as well as the National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun. I am sure they are working on our issues here in Oyo State too.

Would this not affect the party in subsequent elections?

The good thing is that we have Muhammadu Buhari as the President of this great country. It is the Buhari factor that binds everybody together. This is to the extent that even none APC members are backing the party for that reason. After the 2015 election, many of the opposition parties are now moving to join the change we are clamouring for and some of them have pledged their support for us. I believe that the Buhari magic will continue to work for us and nothing can affect the unity of our party. I am confident that with his anti corruption mantra, his antecedents and the confidence that Nigerians now repose in him, he will succeed.

Do you share the view of those who call President Buhari baba go slow?

This is slow and steady government. That should capture President Buhari’s style of government. To start with, he has not disappointed Nigerians. They expected a thorough-bred politician who will take his time to plan very well with a view to attending to the challenges of governance. The first challenge if you agree with me is the issue of insurgency in the Northeast. Undoubtedly, he has given a lot of encouragement to the military at the war front and we are beginning to see the result. For instance, you can see that the insurgents are resorting to guerrilla tactics. Also, with the new service chiefs, Buhari will succeed in crushing Boko Haram soon. Secondly, in his anti-corruption struggle, honestly Nigerians are pleased with him. For the first time, we have a President who is saying anybody who steals will face the music even if he is from his party. Nigerians are happy about this. The EFCC had been in hibernation because they had no support of the previous government, but now they are active.

Thirdly, with his visit to the United States of America and some European countries. Certainly, we are optimistic that our economy will begin to pick up again. On our debtors, we have had many promises from international communities that they will return those monies in their respective country. Foreign investors have also emphatically promised to come and invest in our economy to help address the issue of unemployment. Buhari is also trying to curb wastages in the system.  At 73, Buhari has no new house to build, he has no new wife to marry and he is not interested in amassing wealth; all he is concerned about is to transform the lives of Nigerians positively.

Are you saying American support is not for selfish interest as some Nigerians insist?

Those who are saying that are enemies of Nigeria and they are saying it for their selfish interest. Anytime they are on holidays, they will like to go to America, if they can get a visa. We refuse to appreciate that America is one of the major countries of the world. For instance, our democracy is modeled after that of America. We also try to make our children attend American schools. Many foreign investors are also coming into Nigeria from America. In terms of agriculture and sophisticated technological equipment, we need them. They have willingly agreed to come to our rescue and there is no reason for us to doubt them. I don’t think it lies in our mouth to criticise America. Besides, anybody who has a better alternative from America should step forward and approach Mr. President. But, if not, let us support him in his quest to move Nigeria forward.

With the power struggle among your members in the National Assembly, do you think Buhari will get the needed support from them?

Let me start with the statement of Mr. President that he was ready to work with anybody who emerged as the leadership of the two chambers. God guided him to come out with such resolution. That does not translate to the fact that he did not support the party decision, but he knew that both camps were loyal to him. But, you will see more collaboration between the Federal Government and the National Assembly for betterment of Nigeria soon.

You’ve contested for governorship twice, are you still interested in governing Oyo State?

By the grace of God, I will be governor one day. I believe it will be sooner than later. President Buhari tried it and succeeded only in his fourth attempt. I am sure if I try it for the third time, I will make it. If you look at my antecedent, you will agree that I have what it takes to rule the state. I was a member of the state House of Assembly between 1979 and 1983 and I was an active member of the assembly. With all sense of humility, I am proud to say that I was one of the colleagues of Governor Ajimobi’s father in the assembly in 1979. He was a respected father to me. I received all the encouragement from him. In 1983, I became a commissioner. I was commissioner for home affairs tourism and culture and if you ask people who know me then, they will tell you that I was a formidable member of the state executive. My governor them was Omololu Olunloyo and he can testify to the fact that I was the eyes and ears of his government. Again, I recall that all the commissioners who were my colleagues referred people to me for employment and I did my best. Towards the tail-end of Ladoja’s regime, I was appointed as the Attorney- General and Commissioner for Justice and when he was unlawfully removed from office, I played an active role to ensure that justice was done. So, I have more than enough experience to rule the state. I am looking up to 2019, which I believe to be my year of divine transformation. I will run and become the governor of this great state. My prayer all the time is to become the governor and care for the needy. If truly God likes the poor masses of this state, he will make me governor because I really want to help my people.

Shittu, Onyedinma go down with Millwall

Nigeria’s Danny Shittu and Fred Onyedinma will play in the third-tier of English league, League One, next season after they got relegated from the Championship.

Millwall’s relegation was sealed following Rotherham’s 2-1 loss to victory over Reading.

‘The Lions’ can no longer overtake the Millers in the table and will be playing in the third-tier next season following a five-year stay in the English Championship. Wigan were also relegated.

They face former boss Kenny Jackett at Wolves on the final day of the season, but victory would now be a mere consolation at the end of a bitterly disappointing campaign.

Millwall won just seven games before Ian Holloway was sacked in March, but while relegation looked inevitable interim boss Neil Harris quickly improved performances.

‘The Lions’ have picked up 10 points from nine games under Harris and with more time he may have steered them to safety.

Watford 4-0 Millwall: Shittu sees red in England

OUT-OF-FAVOUR Super Eagles and Millwall defender Danny Shittu was sent off in the 4-0 away loss to Watford in the English League Championship on Thursday.

The Nigeria international heavily helped Watford end their 10-match run without a win, as well as a four-game run without a goal at home, when he received his marching orders nine minutes into the game for a poor challenge in the penalty box.

Forward Tory Deeney scored from 11 yards, but it was just the beginning of a very long day for the visitors.

Italian striker Fernando Forestrieri doubled the lead on 26 minutes with a ground shot.

Watford started the second half searching for more goals, and just three minutes after restart, Ikechi Anya, the Scotsman who has Nigerian blood in his veins scored the third goal.

Midfielder Lewis McGugan completed the rout with another penalty kick in the 60th minute.

Despite the loss, Shittu’s Millwall are still above relegation zone, in 20th place with 21 points.

    Millwall trashed with Shittu absent

Bournemouth staged a spectacular comeback to beat 10-man Millwall, in the absence of Millwall skipper, Danny Shittu.

Martyn Waghorn put Millwall ahead with a low shot and set up Liam Trotter to make it 2-0 to the visitors after only 10 minutes.

Then the Cherries hit back as Ryan Fraser curled in just two minutes before the break.

Then Steve Cook headed in Ian Harte’s corner on 50 minutes and Harry Arter put them ahead from distance just five minutes later.

Millwall’s Alan Dunne saw red and Lewis Grabban scored from the spot on 59 minutes, to complete a torrid 16 minutes for the visitors.

Then, substitute Brett Pitman hit a late fifth from another penalty, to complete the humiliation of the Lions.

Shittu delighted to sign two-year Millwall deal

DANNY Shittu expressed his delight after signing a new two-year contract to keep him at Millwall until the summer of 2015.

NewsAtDen revealed on Thursday that the Nigerian centre-back was set to put pen-to-paper on fresh terms with the Lions, who have now confirmed that the deal has been completed.

Shittu told the club’s official site: “There’s been a couple months of talks and I’m delighted to have got it done. We have had a lot of ups and for me to be staying here shows that I believe in this club and I believe a lot can come from it.”

The 32-year-old, who made 44 appearances last season, had initially been offered a 12-month extension, but Millwall agreed to his request for a longer contract.

Chief executive Andy Ambler said: “We’re delighted that Danny has committed himself to the club for another two years.

“We were keen to ensure that the foundations Kenny Jackett has put in place would be available for the new manager to build on and Danny was a key element of that.”

EX-Super Eagles solid-rock defender, Danny Shittu has said that Marc Bircham is a strong candidate to replace Kenny Jackett as Millwall manager.

The 34-year-old Queens Park Rangers coach has been heavily linked with the vacant position at The Den following Jackett’s resignation on Tuesday.

Lions captain Shittu believes that Bircham would be a good appointment.

“I’ve known Marc Bircham for years and I played with him at QPR,” he told talkSPORT.

“When I was there last season he was the reserve team coach. He’s a nice guy, very passionate and works hard. He would be somebody that is good for the Millwall.”

Bircham played for Millwall between 1996 and 2002.

FA Cup semi-final fallout: Shittu blasts troublemakers

Millwall captain Danny Shittu says he is “disappointed” by the crowd trouble which marred their FA Cup semi-final with Wigan at Wembley.

The Lions bowed out of the competition on Saturday, with Shaun Maloney and Callum McManaman scoring the goals which booked Wigan a place in the final.

During the second half a group of around 20 Lions fans began fighting among themselves. The Football Association has launched an immediate inquiry into the “deplorable” scenes while Millwall have vowed to ban those involved.

And Shittu said: “No players want that to happen. It was supposed to be a happy day, regardless of the result it was meant to be good day out at Wembley. I’m disappointed by it but as players we just have to keep doing what we do.

“At the end so many supporters showed they were there just to spur us on but it’s disappointing to hear about such things happening on a day like that. It’s a small minority but things like that should not be happening. It should have been a great day for both sides.”

Defender Shane Lowry added: “Sometimes you get a minority, but we brought almost 32,000 fans and the majority were fantastic. They out-sung the Wigan fans and backed us throughout the whole game.

“It’s disappointing to see incidents like that but the majority of fans have been fantastic this season.”
