Tinubu’s aide, eminent personalities honour First-Class graduates

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Strategy, Hajia Hadiza Bala Usman, Justice of the Supreme Court Habeeb Abiru, Founder/Principal Partner of MA Banire and Associates, Dr Muiz Banire, SAN, Senators Tokunbo Abiru and Shuaib Salis  and host of other eminent personalities have honoured First-Class Muslim Graduates.

The reception, held at Radisson Blu Hotel, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, was organized by the Muslim In National Development (MIND) Foundation

Hajia Bala Usman hailed the graduates for their achievements and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their faith.

“I am very proud of them for having been able to emerge best graduating students in their respective institutions. But going forward, they need much more than being first-class holders. I want them to create a culture of excellence and hold firmly to their deen,” she said.

She called on MIND to develop a public database of first-class graduates to connect them with recruitment opportunities.

“For example, if I am aware there is a recruitment going on and I have interest in speaking to someone, I know I can go to the MIND Foundation database and pull out first class graduates from engineering, chemistry and others. Creating the database and making it public is very important,” she noted

Dr. Banire, SAN, the convener of the foundation, said that MIND will continue to identify, celebrate, position, protect and facilitate placement of exceptional Muslim graduates.

He described the initiative as a platform for mentorship, networking, and professional guidance for outstanding Muslim graduates.

“In the maiden edition, last year, we had about 106 graduates. This year, we are celebrating 87 First-Class Muslim Graduates. We brought them together to be mentored by people who we consider successful, to guide them in their future endeavours, assist them with placements into job opportunities, and connect them with relevant people in society,” he said.

He added that the foundation intends to expand its reach by tracking more first-class graduates from institutions nationwide.

Senator Salis, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber-security, urged the graduates to see their first-class degrees as a “key” to opportunities, rather than an end.

According to him, achieving First Class Honours is inspiring and shows dedication, commitment, scholarship, and intellectual brilliance.

He urged them not to stop learning, saying that intellectual brilliance alone is not enough.

“You have the key, which is your first class. It is like a badge. When you move around and you have a badge, it is like a key. To a large extent, you can determine the door you want to use the key to open and what you want to do inside the space you have been granted access to,” he said.

He congratulated graduates, saying a First Class degree should give new levels of thinking, opportunity identification, life purpose, and faith in Allah to pursue it.

A Consultant Paediatrician at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Dr Muhammad Salisu, urged the honorees to anchor their lives and careers on faith, emotional intelligence, creative intelligence, moral integrity, and socio-cultural uprightness.

He added that they were fortunate to have personalities ahead of them who had come to educate them and would continue to be available as guides in their life’s sojourn.

Ex-lawmaker: stop negative remarks on Nigeria, Tinubu

Former lawmaker in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, of All Progressives Congress (APC), has cautioned critics and opposition members against making unguarded remarks about Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu-led government.

Oyintiloye, member of defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), in a statement yesterday said comments against Nigeria and Tinubu were ‘unpatriotic acts’.

He noted that persistent humiliation of the country by Nigerians abroad and those here, especially high-profile personalities, through unguided utterances, was painting the country in bad light.

He said although the constitution provided for freedom of speech, “this must not be seen as opportunity to use uncultured words against the country and its leadership.”

He advised that criticism of government policies and programmes should be done with civility and decorum when “calling attention of the leadership of the country to issues deserving their attention.”

‘’Nigeria’s global image is suffering negative effects due to unguided and unsubstantiated allegations by critics and the opposition against Tinubu’s led administration.

“No doubt we are going through challenges which the administration is addressing.

“But making unguarded remarks about our country by Nigerians abroad is affecting the image of the country negatively, and this is not good.

“Many living in the country are also guilty of this. No matter the challenges, our leaders must be accorded respect and dignity because they are our representatives. The way and manner we portray our country and its leadership is a reflection of how our nationality is being treated in the world.”

He said: “Those behind such acts should remember Internet will never forget whatever remarks they make…’’

At the appropriate time, they may be the victim of whatever negative remarks made against the country and her people.

“We should imbibe the culture of Americans who will always say ‘God Bless America’ no matter the situation they find themselves. We must desist from pulling down our country and its leadership across the globe.

“Disparaging our country and its leadership will do no one good, but with prayers and positive collective efforts, we will overcome.”

  • Why we need to connect Nigeria by rails by Tinubu

Why we need to connect Nigeria by rails by Tinubu

    • Kaduna-Kano rail ready for use next year, says Transport Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given reasons for all parts of Nigeria should be connected with a modern railway system.

He said the size of the country’s economy and population underscored the urgent need to link various parts of the country by rail.

President Tinubu spoke yesterday in Abuja at the second International Railway Conference with the theme: Opportunities and Challenges in Railways Development in Africa.

The President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said: “Today, more than at any point in our journey as a nation, we are in great need of rail services for two compelling reasons. The size of our economy and the scale of our population – 230 million people – is ageing towards 250 million. And by 2050, we will be the third most populous nation on earth.

“We will surpass the United States and our population will hit 440 million people. The world has remained committed to railway services because they have proven to be the backbone of industrialisation, connecting more materials to factories, workers to opportunities, and farmers to markets. They shape not only economies, but also the cultural and social bonds of societies.

“This enduring relevance explains why every forward-looking nation, from China to Vietnam, across generations, has invested in the railways as a special driver of development.

“We cannot afford to lag if we seek to keep pace with global economic competitiveness. Thankfully, every part of this continent has embraced the reality of trains as a practical solution to our transportation challenges.

“This transition aligns with the ambitions of our nations, for no economy can grow without sustainable means of mass transportation. It is the railway that connects cities, ports, and markets. And it is the railway that ensures that our dreams of integration are not limited by distance or geography.”

President Tinubu said he looked forward to Nigeria taking the lead in the railway system across Africa, saying: “The challenge ahead of us is to lead this race as the logistics hub of Africa. By reviving and revitalising our railway services, we must be conscious of our place as the anchor of West Africa’s economy and home to the continent’s largest population, as we prepare for the adoption of modern railway infrastructure.

“This awakening inspires projects, such as the Kano-Maradi railway modernisation, which opens new gateways for trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“Our agenda is shaped by the need to reduce the burden on our roads and highways. Decades of over-reliance on road transportation have led to congestion, rapid deterioration of infrastructure, and higher accident rates. Railways offer safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives, reducing carbon emissions, and reinforcing our commitment to sustainable development.”

According to him, connecting the country through rail requires collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

“The task of maximising the opportunities in the railway sector is not one we consider easy. It requires networks, partnerships, and robust collaboration with stakeholders. This is why our ongoing modernisation projects, Lagos to Kano, Kano to Maradi, and Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, are designed with open doors for private sector participation.”

He hinted that the Kano-Maradi rail project, which was at five per cent when the administration assumed office, is approaching 60 per cent completion.

Also, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, said the project has the potential to transform Nigeria’s infrastructure base and accelerate the country’s economic growth.

Akume noted that the project, with its integrated components of high-speed rail, power generation, and transmission, LNG infrastructure, and digital backbone, offers opportunities for inclusive growth and national integration.

But he cautioned that all aspects of the projects must be scrutinised.

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, said the Kaduna-Kano rail modernisation project was 53 per cent completed, and the Kano-Maradi was 60 per cent completed.

He added that the Kaduna-Kano project would be ready for completion and inauguration by the end of next year.

The minister said the Kano-Maradi project would reach Katsina by the end of this year and be ready for completion and inauguration by March 2027.

Commenting on the need to connect Nigeria with other countries, Alkali said: “The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents an enormous opportunity. But without efficient logistics, our businesses cannot compete. That is why Nigeria’s Kano–Maradi corridor is more than a railway project; it is a gateway to West Africa’s markets, opening access for Nigerian goods into the Niger Republic and beyond.

“As we modernise our railways, we are also positioning Nigeria as a logistics hub for West and Central Africa.

“Another crucial dimension is the environmental impact. Rail is the greenest form of mass transport. Every tonne of cement or grain moved by train instead of trucks means fewer emissions, less road damage, and fewer accidents. In a world where climate commitments are shaping trade and investment, Nigeria’s ability to shift freight from road to rail will be a competitive advantage.”

Investors laud Tinubu, Umahi for dialogue on demolished $250m property

From the Nigerians in the diaspora came yesterday a thumb up for  President Bola Tinubu and Works  Minister Dave  Umahi, for initiating dialogue with investors affected by the demolition of the $250 million WIN HOMES Estates project in Okun Ajah, Lagos.

Stella Okengwu,an engineer,  Dr. Kimberly Stark, Faduri Oluwadare Joseph, Mr. Obie Aweghogho, and Oluwaseun Bamigbola Bovi  spoke at a news conference  on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

They said the move represents a turning point for diaspora engagement and investor confidence.

The Nigerians in the Diaspora declared: “On behalf of countless Nigerians in the diaspora and with deep humility and patriotism, we address you today at this pivotal World Press Conference, held in response to a historic development, the Federal Government of Nigeria’s initiation of a formal communication channel, led by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to engage with diaspora investors impacted by the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway realignment.”

They stressed that the dialogue was a sign of leadership, saying, “We commend President Bola Tinubu and Minister Umahi for their courage and statesmanship in responding to the cries for justice following the demolition of the $250 million WIN HOMES Estates project in Okun Ajah on October 5, 2024.

“This gesture signals to the global community that Nigeria is committed to protecting foreign direct investment, particularly from its 50 million-strong diaspora, who remain steadfast development partners.”

They highlighted the significance of WIN HOMES Estates as a beacon of inclusive development, uniting Nigerians across ethnicities, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw, Efik, and others in a shared vision of progress.

“It created jobs for hundreds of unemployed youth, boosted local businesses, and sourced materials domestically, fostering hope among diaspora investors eager to rebuild Nigeria,” they noted.

However, they noted the damage caused by the demolition without notice, dialogue, or compensation shattered not just structures but trust, sending shockwaves through global Nigerian communities and contributing to a 30% drop in diaspora real estate investments.

They insisted their campaign had always been constructive, stressing, “Let us be clear: our year-long, peaceful, and legal advocacy has never been anti-government. Many of us supported this administration, believing in its promise of Renewed Hope. Our call is for fairness, justice, and the rule of law”.

They, however, urged the government to act decisively, stating, “We respectfully urge the government to conduct a proper evaluation of the demolished properties, ensure adequate compensation for WIN HOMES and its investors, and establish a Diaspora Investment Protection Desk to safeguard future projects of this magnitude.

“Such measures will help reverse decades of capital flight and restore investor confidence.”

They praised the Coalition of Civil Society for their tireless mediation, demonstrating the power of civic engagement in fostering national healing.

Looking ahead, they reaffirmed their commitment to Nigeria, “As private investors, we see this dialogue as a green light to global markets. Nigeria must move beyond welcoming capital to respecting and protecting it.

“By institutionalizing this approach, Nigeria can enhance its rankings on ease of doing business and investor confidence indices, unlocking billion-dollar opportunities from its diaspora.”

Explaining that the news conference celebrated not just the pain of loss but the possibility of progress, the investors, stressed: “Let this be a model for partnerships with Nigeria’s diaspora, ensuring that those who invest in her future are protected.

Thanking President Tinubu, the Works Minister, and all who stood with them during the period, they prayed, “May Nigeria rise to its full potential as a global investment hub.”

This as the group urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to take immediate action against the sponsors of insecurity in the region, citing allegations of activities detrimental to national security and purportedly fuelling banditry in Northern Nigeria.

The governing All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Movement in Ondo State has vowed to secure 1.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, with a pledge to bring all support groups under one umbrella.

Addressing journalists on Monday after the elders’ meeting in Akure, its chairman, Nimbe Farunkanmi, said that Ondo state, which has nearly two million registered voters, will deliver for President Tinubu.

Farunkanmi revealed that the elders have started canvassing for President Tinubu’s re-election by mobilising from the wards, units, and local government levels in the state.

“We are determined to deliver 1.5 million votes to Tinubu. It is possible because Ondo currently has 1.9 million registered voters. The problem has always been voter apathy, and that is what we, as elders, want to change.

“So, this is an elders’ movement for Tinubu’s continuity, and meetings like this would be replicated at local government, ward, and unit levels to ensure total mobilization for the President,” he said.

Jamiu Ekungba, a prominent stalwart of the party, emphasised that the movement was formed to unite the APC elders and ensure massive voters’ turnout for the 2027 election.

He disclosed that plans were underway to encourage sons and daughters of the state to return home to vote, while mobilization would also target farmers, traders, and artisans.

In her remarks, Mrs Olukemi Iyantan, a party member and federal commissioner at the National Population Commission (NPC), noted that the elders’ intervention would bring unity and direction to the party.

“The unity of purpose is key. Before now, the absence of leaders made the party appear disorganized. But with the Elders Forum, we have a strong platform for consultation and wisdom that will help us achieve victory for Tinubu in 2027,” she said.

On his part, Mr Olumuyiwa Ogunleye, one of the prominent elders of the APC, explained that the elders’ role was to rally all factions and support groups under a single umbrella, “Ondo State for Tinubu 2027,” in line with the caucus already established by the state governor.

He said, “The elders are intervening to ensure there’s no division in the party’s support for Tinubu. All groups will now operate under one structure with the sole aim of delivering maximum votes for the president in Ondo State.”

President Bola Tinubu has stressed the need to connect Nigeria by rail, citing the country’s large economy and population as reasons for urgent investment in railway infrastructure.

Speaking at the 2nd International Railway Conference in Abuja, themed “Opportunities and Challenges in Railways Development in Africa”, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said rail transport plays a vital role in linking factories to raw materials, workers to opportunities, and farmers to markets, while also strengthening cultural and social bonds.

He added that reviving and utilising Nigeria’s railways is the only way for the country to become Africa’s logistics hub, ensuring that its vision of national integration is not constrained by distance or geography.

He said, “Today, more than at any point in our journey as a nation, we are in great need of rail services for two compelling reasons.
