BREAKING: I never betrayed Tinubu, says Atiku

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday, October 5, claimed he never betrayed President Bola Tinubu, during their political alliance in 2007.

He stated that rather than betraying the president, he stood up to his then-principal, President Olusegun Obasanjo, and ensured that Lagos state did not succumb to the 2003 political tsunami.

Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, revealed this in a press conference in Abuja.

He said: “Those of you who are old enough will also remember that in 2003, the PDP took over all the southwestern states, with the exception of Lagos.

“I stood between Obasanjo and himself (Tinubu) and I said no, you (Obasanjo) can’t take over Lagos. Leave it and he (Obasanjo) left it. So, who is indebted to whom? Is it me or Bola Ahmed Tinubu? I vehemently deny that I stabbed Tinubu in the back. There are other things which I will not want to go into.”

In response to a journalist’s question about a presidential spokesman’s claim that he betrayed Tinubu by requesting the president’s academic records from Chicago State University, Atiku said he and Tinubu parted ways politically after the former Lagos state governor wanted to be his running mate in 2007.

He said: “I beg to disagree (on betrayal allegation) with Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Yes, it is true that in 2007 we came together to form an alliance in Lagos, and at the convention, I contested and got the ticket. After I got the ticket, he sent about 5 or 6 seniors – some of them are here – I can even name them but I don’t want to embarrass them.

“They met me and said to me that Bola wanted to be my running mate. I said to them, gentlemen, you’re all old enough, and apparently, virtually all of you are Christians’ with the exception of one person. What will be your reaction to having a Muslim-Muslim ticket?

“All of them said we totally objected to it and I said why didn’t you tell him when he was giving you the message that look Mr Tinubu, the message you’re sending us, we don’t seem to agree with you on it (Muslim-Muslim ticket). Why are you coming then to me? And that was the end of our political relationship. We broke away, so what is the ground for him to say that I betrayed him?

“Till today, I won’t do a Muslim-Muslim ticket; I don’t have to be president; we are a multi-ethnic and multi-religious people, and our government must reflect our diversity, and our composition must reflect the same.”

The Nation reported that the university released the academic records of the President on Monday and the CSU Registrar, Carl Westberg, also carried out a deposition of the documents on Tuesday, in compliance with the ruling of Magistrate Jeffrey Gilbert.

Gilbert approved Atiku’s request for Tinubu’s academic records on September 19, but the President filed a review of the ruling.

  • Everyone will benefit from Tinubu’s democratic dividends, says Arisekola

Everyone will benefit from Tinubu’s democratic dividends, says Arisekola

The publisher of Streetjournal Magazine, Mogaji Wole Arisekola has stated that all those who patriotically worked for President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 elections may not get political appointments but the dividends of democracy will definitely go round with everyone under his administration.

Arisekola in a parley with some media executives on Tuesday, October 3, at a popular Lagos hotel assured all those who have laboured for the ruling APC, especially the success of the current President will never be overlooked, while also assuring them that Tinubu’s reward mechanism is excellent and devoid of bias.

Arisekola said: “The clear and overwhelming victory of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s President is well deserved and a very clear indication of the love and trust of the citizenry for him, particularly the rank and file of the ruling APC, believing in his ability and capacity to deliver the dividends of democracy to all sundry while also putting into account a robust reward mechanism for those who are directly and patriotically instrumental to his electoral victory.

“Under Asiwaju Tinubu’s watch, there is nothing like monkey dey work, baboon dey chop, he is a leader of all, whose interest is to see everyone happy and fulfilled without regrets or disappointment, this is a phenomenon that is extremely rare in our body politic.

“Asiwaju Tinubu appreciates the contributions of everyone and he will reward them for contributing to his victory at the polls. And I am sure he is going to do just that. He is a brilliant administrator whose word is his bond, and there is no doubt that he will turn around the fortune of Nigeria, especially in the areas of economy, and strengthen the security architecture of the country.

“Tinubu will continue to attract greatness to Nigeria through foreign direct investment and other human-friendly initiatives to drive growth and stem the tide of spiking inflation. Interestingly the duo of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima are versed in financial management, and have been tested and trusted and would steadily steer the ship of Nigeria to a prosperous and healthy state to the admiration of all Nigerians by the grace of God.”

While basking in the euphoria of a long-standing symbiotic relationship with Asiwaju Tinubu for many decades, Arisekola described him as a man of integrity, honour, and purpose.

He said: “Tinubu isn’t a new person to me, he has never disappointed anyone around him and he will never disappoint anyone even at a time like this. He is a man of integrity, vision, honour, and purpose. I therefore use this medium to appeal to all Nigerians to be patient and prayerful.

“God is going to bless Nigeria under President Tinubu. However, indeed, everyone cannot secure a political appointment under Asiwaju Tinubu’s administration. It would be correct to say everyone will enjoy the dividends of democracy under his watch.

“It is convenient for me to further add that Tinubu’s victory was a reward for his political sagacity and fraternity across Nigeria, crossing religious boundaries and ethnic lines.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a class-politician, a colossus of Nigerian politics, and generalissimo of African political leadership. A kingmaker who has now become the king himself.

“Many Nigerians can also testify to his work as having the capacity and knowledge to take Nigeria to the Promised Land, an Eldorado of boundless riches and growth as Nigeria’s President, a perfect gift for our dear nation as ordained by the creator”

  • 2023 WTD: You will get due reward under my watch, Tinubu assures teachers

2023 WTD: You will get due reward under my watch, Tinubu assures teachers

President Bola Tinubu has given his assurance to teachers in Nigeria that his administration is committed to ensuring they receive their rightful rewards.

A statement issued by his senior special assistant, office of the vice president, Stanley Nkwocha, said Tinubu gave the assurance on Thursday, October 5, during the 2023 World Teachers’ Day commemoration at Eagle Square, Abuja.

He, however, regretted the challenges confronting Nigerian teachers, including overcrowded classrooms, scarce resources, and limited opportunities for professional development, which he said are the result of prolonged neglect of the noble profession.

President Tinubu, who was represented by his deputy, Vice President Kashim Shettima, noted that Nigeria’s future can only be safeguarded by investing in education, empowering the teachers, and providing every child with the tools to reach their dream destination.

Delivering the President’s keynote address titled, “Teacher Appreciation: Nurturing Minds, Changing Lives,” VP Shettima said, “Our commitment to actualising our education reforms is to drive the emergence and sustenance of a system that recognises that education is the mother of new ideas and groundbreaking discoveries.

“With well-taught workforces, we are not only going to build a nation that thinks but one that lives in an interconnected world, a world where the exchange of knowledge and ideas knows no boundaries. Without motivated teachers, we can’t build a nation that fosters such international cooperation, builds bridges of understanding, and addresses global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and healthcare. So, education, to us, and I believe to you too, is not just a means to individual success; it is a path to global harmony and sustainable development.

“Of course, our dear teachers, we are not just going to focus solely on technological advancements. The human aspect of education is just as critical as the infrastructure. Our teachers deserve to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. It is my promise that we will work tirelessly to build a society where the teacher’s reward begins to manifest here on earth,” the President said.

Noting that every educated person is a product of teachers, President Tinubu expressed the nation’s gratitude to Nigerian teachers, reassuring them that their profession is prime in the vision for the nation and her development agenda.

He said: “So, this day is more of a thanksgiving to honour those who have nurtured us, those who have guided us toward the hills upon which we stand today.

“I believe that there’s no vehicle that can transport you to your destination as safely as education. It is the reason every child, regardless of their background, awaits a future of vast possibilities. It is the reason the child of a disadvantaged family in a remote village clings to the same future as children from privileged homes with certainty.

“Education is the miracle that changes the fortune of a family in a single generation. Thanks to you, our dear teachers, we have broken down barriers and created a society where merit, talent, and hard work supersede the circumstances of one’s birth.

“So, by investing in education, by empowering our teachers, and by providing every child with the tools to reach their dream destination, we have safeguarded the future of this nation.”

Observing that the world has undergone serious changes, President Tinubu said in the age of artificial intelligence where technology is transforming every facet of lives, teachers face new challenges and opportunities in a digital era.

The President disclosed that he has directed the Ministers of Education to collaborate with the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to comprehensively revise existing guidelines “to ensure that anyone seeking to benefit from this Act must be fully prepared to return to the classroom, equipped with the latest teaching techniques and skills, especially in the realm of information technology”.

He continued: “I am pleased to share with you a significant policy initiative, the Harmonised Retirement Age of Teachers in Nigeria Act 2022, which allows our dedicated teachers to continue their invaluable service for up to forty years or until reaching the age of sixty-five, whichever comes first. This measure is designed to retain the wealth of experience within our educational system and bolster the number of educators in our schools.

“I encourage each of you to consider taking advantage of this policy, but please bear in mind that eligibility is not automatic. To benefit from this Act, you must possess contemporary teaching skills, including proficiency in information technology, as we strive to equip our students for both the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow.”

Recalling that the role of a teacher had moved from not only imparting knowledge, the President said it has extended far beyond that, and they are now expected to be technologically adept, adaptable, and innovative.

“They must equip their students with skills that are relevant to an ever-evolving job market, where automation and AI are becoming increasingly prevalent. Our commitment to education must evolve with the times.

“Our plan for the education sector is to make it a system capable of harnessing the potential of new learning technologies. Our agenda is to build a system where artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual classrooms are not mere buzzwords. They are tools that can revolutionize the way we teach, learn, and think.

“We are going to invest in modernizing our educational infrastructure and make sure that we are in step with the world on the road to the future,” Tinubu added.

On why the government decided to present the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Awards this year, Tinubu said improving the condition of teachers was not enough.

He stated: “This is why we will foster a culture of appreciation for our teachers. This is why we will recognise their contributions not just on World Teachers’ Day but throughout the year.

“Our teachers are not only educators but also mentors, guides, and role models who shape the character and aspirations of our children. Every nation reflects the satisfaction of its teachers.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, said the day offers an opportunity for society to celebrate its true heroes, describing teachers as the champions of Nigeria’s transformation.

He said celebrating and rewarding excellence in the teaching profession was the government’s way of encouraging and attracting qualified persons to the sector.

On his part, the National President of NUT, Comrade Audu Amba, acknowledged and commended the efforts of the government to improve the welfare of teachers and their working conditions, particularly the sustenance of existing initiatives to reward excellence and hard work.

While calling on governments across different levels to scale up funding for the education sector, the NUT president urged teachers to embrace innovation in technology, just as he appealed to stakeholders to provide digital tools as well as training opportunities to enhance teaching and learning.

He also called on the government to provide adequate security in schools across the country, as well as make the teaching profession more attractive by improving welfare and infrastructure, especially in public schools.

Goodwill messages were presented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives who was represented by Hon. Mark Useni and the Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Bunkure.

Also present at the event were the chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Sen. Adamu Usman; Minister of State for Education, Hon. Yusuf Sununu; Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Hon. Umar Tafida, among others.

BREAKING: Diploma Tinubu submitted to INEC valid, says CSU in affidavit

The Diploma President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is valid, the Chicago State University (CSU) has confirmed in an affidavit.

It confirmed the certificate and that of 1979 it presented to the President on graduation is valid.

CSU, in an affidavit it presented to the court in Chicago, said: ” Chicago State University provided a Diploma to Bola Ahmed Tinubu and subsequently provided a certified copy of that Diploma. Both are valid and authentic Diplomas of the Chicago State University.

”There are certain differences between the Diploma and the certified copy because all diplomas are signed by the current President/Board Chairman. There are also differences in the font and seal on the Diploma because the University updated its seal and font after the diploma was issued.

”The difference in the date of award on the diploma versus the certified copy is likely the result of human error. The graduation date on the certified copy is typed in manually by a person and can be inaccurate.”

    • Presidency replies critics

The Presidency yesterday spoke on the attempt to cast in the bad light, the degree certificate submitted to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the February 25 election.

It condemned some opposition members’ claim that the certificate is fake, even after the release and deposition to it by Chicago State University (CSU).

Also yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, described as frivolous, and diversionary the efforts by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar to rubbish President Tinubu’s credentials.

Tuggar, speaking on a television programme, said that the controversy does not cast a shadow on some of the president’s recent international engagements.

Also, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and the state chapter of the PDP denied backing Atiku’s action.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Tope Ajayi  in a post on his verified X handle, @TheTope_Ajayi, said: “We should be clear. In the deposition made by the Chicago State University, there was nowhere the university said the certificate presented to INEC by President Tinubu is fake.

“The university insisted under oath that President Tinubu graduated with honours and even at that, replacements for lost certificates are done by vendors, not the University.

“The claim that President Tinubu submitted fake certificate to INEC does not make sense. A man can not forge the academic records he possesses. You can only forge what you don’t have.”

    ‘Tinubu not distracted’

Tuggar, who insisted that the administration is not distracted, said: “There is a tendency to always try to distract people on such frivolous issues as opposed to facing the major issues of development. We don’t have time to waste on that.”

The minister recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari experienced a similar issue.

He stressed: “Nobody is wasting time about certificate qualification for somebody who has been a governor of a state, served two terms, and has been on the national stage as a politician.

“You remember that (former) President Buhari had to go through the same thing, where people were actually questioning whether he went to secondary school or not. Someone who had classmates and was the captain. He was a head boy.”

The minister said that during Tinubu’s recent international meetings, no one showed interest in the saga.

He added: “The foreign leaders that we’ve been engaging and the international organisations clearly are disinterested in wasting time on such.

We pay no mind to that.”

Tuggar said due to the critical situation of the nation, Nigerians should not be obsessed by certification, urging them to concentrate on development.

He added: ”With the economic challenges we are facing, we shouldn’t be wasting time about some certificate; whether there is a T missing or an I hasn’t been dotted. That shouldn’t be our primary focus at the moment.”

Eno: I am not backing Atiku over forgery allegations

Governor Eno and Akwa Ibom PDP denied backing Atiku alleged certificate forgery case against the president.

In a statement by the state PDP publicity secretary, Borono Bassey, the party distanced the governor  and the party from social media reports that they were celebrating Atiku’s efforts.

The chapter described the reports as fake and concocted by disgruntled and mischievous persons to discredit Eno before President Tinubu.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Akwa Ibom State was drawn earlier today (yesterday), to an obviously fake news item being circulated on social media alleging that our party and His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Leader of  PDP, Pastor Umo Eno, was secretly celebrating Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s efforts in ‘exposing’ President Tinubu’s alleged fake certificate.

“We hereby state as follows: The matter which is the subject of the fake news is in court and therefore, subjudice. By that very fact, neither the governor or the Peoples Democratic Party at the state level is competent to comment on it.

“The governor as a law abiding citizen, who believes in the supremacy of the law, has tremendous respect for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, the PDP whose platform Pastor Umo Eno was elected as governor, and the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“The governor of Akwa Ibom State is not a party on record in the suit referred to in this  rumour and therefore, can only await the judgment of the court, and he will join in the usual respectful and deferential chorus of “as the court pleases.”

“We urge well meaning Nigerians to ignore the ill-intentioned attempt to drag the Governor of Akwa Ibom State and the State Chapter of our great Party, the PDP into a matter that is undergoing the processes of law.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday in Abuja assured that President Bola Tinubu would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the restoration of total security in the North East.

Shettima gave the assurance when the board and management of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) presented the North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP) to him at the Presidential Villa.

He implored the commission to prioritise investments in legacy projects, including agriculture, education and smart transportation also referred to as electric transport vehicles and tricycles.

The vice president also urged the commission to be prudent with its resources and invest in projects that will have a lasting impact on the region.

”I will ask the board and management of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to embark on legacy projects; projects that will stand the test of time. It is absolutely essential that you invest in agriculture, invest in new transport technology – electric tricycles and vehicles. If you invest in smart transportation it will have a sea change and you can even attract climate funding,” he said.

Shettima, who pledged unalloyed support for the commission to actualise all of its objectives, urged its board and management to unite as a team and do what was right for the people.

He acknowledged numerous challenges confronting the people of the region, noting that they could be surmounted if the people and leaders work together.

Shettima, however, expressed optimism that the region could overcome its challenges if there was a will.

According to him, government cannot manage poverty, it has to fight it.

The vice president emphasised the need for the commission to embark on projects that would further engage the youths and create jobs.

Shettima noted that although sharing of palliatives was good, the commission must invest in education, agriculture and electric vehicles which, according to him, are key areas for development.

Chairman of the NEDC board, Maj.-Gen. Paul Tarfa, said the purpose of the visit and presentation of the master plan was to highlight the importance of the document and to ensure its implementation.

Also, the commission’s Managing Director, Mr Mohammed Alkali, said the master plan was in fulfilment of section 8 (1) (c) of the NEDC Act.

The act stipulates that the commission shall develop a master plan based on the needs assessment of the zone.

  • Don’t distract President Tinubu

    Don’t distract President Tinubu

    • By O. J. Akiri

The general elections in Nigeria have come and gone. As an “unlearned man”, the presidential elections petitions have taught me one retainable truth for anyone contemplating judicial recourse: the law essentially demands palpable evidence, not hear-say or supposed personal convictions no matter the timber-size or the calibre of the personality involved.

I still recall this episode, where a bold journalist queried late Senator Arthur Nzeribe on the propriety of an unregistered entity he called the ABN, suing Prof Humphrey Nwosu and his Federal Electoral Commission at an Abuja High Court. Nzeribe’s laconic and remorseless response was: “gentleman, the law is flexible”. The flexibility of the law is the raison d’être of the law profession itself. But must we arrogantly shun the unabashed truth that is crystal clear?

The new vogue is now to by-pass even the highest court of our land, the Supreme Court, after flying across oceans,  innumerable mountains like the Kilimanjaro or even the Fiji Islands, USA et al to re-open fresh cases that were  at whatever stages in our country’s courts, as may tickle the fancy of the defendant.

If not for the fun of the malicious intent to unnecessarily stir up sullying and baseless controversy, why should we still be raking up the issue of the certificate of our president, who in utmost modesty shunned every iota of cocketry and alienating triumphalism following his victory at the presidential petitions tribunal?  He has already scaled with honour the penultimate judicial stage with five renowned Justices arriving at a largely unanimous verdict in his favour. And don’t forget the issue of certificate now being peddled should indeed be a pre-electoral case.

Can some patriotic Nigerians strongly advise Atiku Abubakar to please retrace his steps from this path of unnecessarily impugning the image of the president of this great country, upon whose shoulders rest the collective honour and dignity of over 200 million Nigerians? Can he please spare a thought for the honour and sanctity of Nigeria’s highly esteemed Presidency the world over? Can truly patriotic Nigerians prevail on Atiku Abubakar to please, rein in his regrettably unbridled and vengeful judicial excesses vis-a-vis our president?

Come rain, come shine, and in every situation particular, we are proud of the carriage and overall solidity of the  performance indices so far showcased by President Bola Tinubu, whether within or outside the shores of this country.

Permit me the liberty to enumerate just a few:

    1) The “palatable” message-content and the splendid delivery of the speech presented at the just concluded 75th United Nations General Assembly, which was not only hailed by Nigerians but also by the rest of Africa. It was a real source of overwhelming pride and sure fulfilment to all.

Read Also: FACT CHECK: Is President Tinubu’s CSU certificate owned by a woman?

    2) Then we talk about the rare courage and boldness inherent in his maiden speech as President of the ECOWAS, with the categorical denunciation of the staccato of laughable coups that have bedevilled the sub-region and Africa in general. During the last summit of some Francophone countries with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, I overheard Traore of the Burkinabe junta intimidate the elder statesmen of other African countries in these words: “c’est la patrie ou la mort”, meaning “it is either the fatherland or death”. But nobody wants to confront a mere “scout” armed with a pistol?

    3) Then at the home front, the extraordinarily bold decision to outrightly jettison the fuel subsidy conundrum. It was like arresting the metaphorical postponement of an overdue and unavoidable surgical operation, for a well diagnosed ailment.  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had the courage to confront head-on this guzzling cartel of mindless economic leeches.

Atiku may please make bold to try his luck again in the next elections coming up in 2027. That is the beauty of tenured democracy. I am informed that Atiku might be attaining 80 by 2027. Let us encourage him in his pursuit by urging him to discountenance his understandable geriatric concerns, as even President Biden of the USA who will be 81 by next year, is frantically scheming to have another bite at the presidency by becoming the Democratic Party’s candidate in 2024.

In India Moraji Ronchodhi Desai of his country’s Janata Party became his country’s Prime Minister at the age of 82, between 1977 and 1979.

I will spare you the boredom of enumerating the unexemplary cases of Africa’s sit tight leaders like Paul Biya of Cameroun, (90years) Yoweri Museveni of Uganda (79 years) or Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea (81). Theirs are akin to Vladimir Putin’s hybrid “universal suffrage” of interminable tenure.

I am aware that Atiku Abubakar’s skeletal résumé, as revealed a few years ago shows that he came out in Division Three in the West African School Certificate Examination of his days.

I would rather stop there and probe no further.

Nevertheless, I am quite sure that Exxon Mobile Oil Company could never have employed Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as an Accountant, if he were not rigorously interviewed and found eminently worthy to be offered the position of an accountant.

Nigerians in their millions have the unshakeable faith that this president will turn around the fortunes of our dear country.

He is a patient listener and has often told us that he too appreciates the metaphorical pangs of the maternal birth we are passing through, before the midwifing of our much sought new era.

In the same vein, we may wish to digress à propos, by appealing to Comrade Ajaero of the Labour Party cum NLC, not to exacerbate prevalent social tension with threatening to call out the masses of our country who at this stage rather require soothing encouragement, since the new government is only a few months old.

We are confident that with the glaring indices of human empathy so far demonstrated at this early dawn of his administration, President Asiwaju Bola will steer us away from the troubled waters of unpleasant socio-economic realities, characterised by the marasmus of humongous internal debts, to the safe haven of internal security and agricultural boom.

The registrar said: “There were materials in Mr. Tinubu’s records that show that he was a male. I see the application to CSU. Mr. Tinubu identified himself as a male. His letter of admission identified him as a male. It says: ‘Dear Mr. Tinubu’

    VERDICT:

FALSE, as the information is misleading, the woman in the picture is Dr. Nika Nakia and not Adenike Tinubu.
