CSU certificates: Tinubu’s victory should silence detractors forever, says group

The victory of President Bola Tinubu against the leading opposition candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the Chicago State University certificate saga, has been described as a lesson for the president’s critics, expected to silence them permanently.

The Disciples of Jagaban (DOJ), a prominent support group for President Tinubu, emphasised that the certificate controversy, a carefully crafted and baseless misinformation campaign targeting President Tinubu’s educational credentials, wasn’t astonishing.

The DOJ in a statement issued by its national coordinator, Abdul Hakeem Alawuje, however, expressed surprise that personalities like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, a former governor, and their supporters could believe that Tinubu worked with Mobil and still believe he did not go to school.

Alawuje called on all the APC and Tinubu/Shettima support groups not to relax, as the battle against detractors of their principals is not over yet, with detractors attempting to bring down the President by all means.

He said: “We can even pardon the gullible followers and supporters of Obi and Atiku for doubting his Chicago University results, because they possibly thought Tinubu worked as a fuel attendant at a Mobil filling station.

“Tinubu support groups across the country should get prepared many are still coming. The battle facing Tinubu is the same battle fighting Nigeria and Nigerians for decades. The same set of those who believed Nigeria was their personal venture are all secretly fueling this crisis, they left no one amongst them behind.

“At the initial stage, some of us knew we were going to face a lot of war before we set out and launched the campaign stage for Tinubu, even before the electioneering began in late 2019. Although we didn’t know it would be as dangerous as this after the victory of our principal, let all the ants eating the Nigerian fruits be told, Disciples of Jagaban have fully returned to the political battlefield.

“We have never regretted our past with our principal and we are not going to relent until Nigeria’s political system is totally sanitised. DOJ has said this several times, at several occasions that, our principal is not a perfect man, he is never a saint but, he is 100% better than all the other contestants involved.

“Many Nigerians know that Tinubu is one million kilometres better prepared ahead of others, otherwise by this time with the opposition’s evil scripts, he would have been a forgotten man. In this struggle DOJ has taken the battle personally from the beginning and up till now we are still coming up in another deference dimension to finish what we started.

“It is generally and publicly known that we started before anyone even as at the time Mr President himself did not have any contact with us. He had many political groups before but we started the public campaign stage for him immediately after President Muhammad Buhari assumed office in 2019. We have many prominent and competent machineries across the country who believe it is time we start relaxing. Still, we are fully ready now to return to the political battlefield at least to finish what we started.

Alawuje further stated: “When we started, there was no big politician within or outside the country that talked to us on behalf of Tinubu. It is therefore not necessary to wait for anyone even our principal himself to continue our battle in defence of Mr President. We understand what the whole support groups are going through but notwithstanding, if we relax, our previous sacrifices may be rubbished and destroyed by these shameless political ants.

“DOJ is now calling on all the support groups to continue from where we stopped after we achieved the victory. We should understand that we are in a battle with frustrated politicians, those who have successfully lost their both eyes and sense of focus in the battle, such people will not care to destroy other people. One of the reasons we must not relax is that you can see the Obidients celebrating Atiku, it is not because they love Atiku, but because they want anything that will destroy Tinubu.

“When Atiku and his political gang, the G7 joined APC in 2015, I warned APC that their coming was not because they love Buhari/Tinubu, but because they came to join hands to destroy Jonathan. That is who they are naturally, and we have been in battle with them since 1999 when democracy returns.

“We may have lost hope in those who are in charge of the APC reward system but we are very much hopeful in Tinubu’s Renew Hope Agenda. Let the struggle continue until the Renewed Hope Agenda is successfully delivered.”

Tinubu’s certificate in order, CSU deposes in court

    • Our former student now Nigeria’s president

Chicago State University’s (CSU’s) Registrar, Caleb Westberg, yesterday deposed that the same Bola Ahmed Tinubu that attended the Southwest College is the same person who attended and graduated from the institution in 1979.

He further stated that the Tinubu, a male student, is the President of Nigeria.

The registrar’s testimonies are contained in a deposition he made in the Office of Angela Liu, Dechert LLP on 35 West Wacker Drive, Suite 3400, Chicago, IL 60601.

Liu is counsel to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who got an Illinois court to compel the CSU to release to him the academic records of President Tinubu.

The CSU registrar said the admission letter the CSU issued to Tinubu showed clearly that the Tinubu, who attended the school between 1977 and 1979, was a male.

The CSU was represented by Michael Hayes. Five other lawyers from Liu’s firm joined by zoom.

Lawyers Victor P. Henderson and Oluwole Afolabi appeared for Tinubu.

The registrar said: “There were materials in Mr. Tinubu’s records that show that he was a male. I see the application to CSU. Mr. Tinubu identified himself as a male. His letter of admission identified him as a male. It says: ‘Dear Mr. Tinubu’

The CSU registrar said he was getting between 5 and 30 enquiries a day regarding President Tinubu, but stated that the institution did not notify Tinubu about such requests.

In the deposition, he said: “We believe Bola Tinubu who attended CSU is the same person who is the president of Nigeria today.”

When pressed further on why he believes the person who is the president of Nigeria is the same person who attended CSU, the registrar said: “Tinubu is an unusual name in the US. He matched the Records in the file against the information provided by the student or on behalf of the student.

”We believe Bola Tinubu who attended CSU is the same person who is the president of Nigeria today. The university only has diplomas that students didn’t pick up in its possession.”

Restating that the varsity does not typically keep diplomas, Westberg said: “I have the diploma that was made available to Mr. Enahoro-Ebah in our possession because Mr. Tinubu did not pick it up.

”I do not have the Diploma that was submitted to INEC in our possession because he had picked it up.”

On Tinubu’s gender when he enrolled in the school, the registrar explained: “Tinubu applied to the university as a male and a letter of admission was issued to a male.

”I’m not aware of any instance where CSU had been requested to certify a document.”

He said that Mr. Afolabi, who was acting for President Tinubu, insisted that the documents must be certified, adding that Afolabi and Mr. Orr communicated by email.

Westberg said: “I don’t recall seeing the emails. I don’t know if Jason Carter approved of the certification.

Apart from Jason Carter, I do not know anyone else who was involved in the process.

”I went into Mr. Tinubu’s student’s file and produced the documents to Mr. Orr. I didn’t know that the documents would be certified. I don’t get involved in legal matters.

”Mr. Tinubu requested that the documents be released to Mr. Afolabi for ‘legal proceedings’. The signature on the consent form is similar to the signature we have on record for Mr. Tinubu.

”All of the certified documents came from CSU’s files. Nothing was handed over to us by Mr. Afolabi except for the FERPA form.”

According to him, the CSU had never certified documents for anyone before, saying: “ It must have been made because there was more of a Nigerian thing.”

Responding to a question on why Tinubu requested a diploma and not pick it up or ask that it be sent to him, the resgistrar said: “You would have to ask him. In the U.S., diplomas are considered merely ceremonial documents. In some other countries, it may be considered more.

”In the U.S., more reliance is placed on transcripts and not on Diplomas.”

Insisting that no interaction existed between him and Tinubu’s men, Westberg said: “Mr. Tinubu’s counsel did not prepare any affidavit for me. He didn’t draft anything for me. My statement that Mr. Bola Tinubu graduated from CSU was based on the transcripts in our possession.

”I have never met Bola Tinubu. I have never seen him. He did not visit our campus. He does not donate money to the school.

”The documents were released in pursuance of a FERPA request. I believe Mr. Afolabi requested that the documents be certified.

”I’m not aware if the stamp affixed by Mr. Orr to the documents was an official document. it is not part of CSU practice.

”Mr. Orr later departed from CSU after these documents were certified. I don’t know if his departure was connected to the certification of the documents; but I don’t think it was.

”I did not rely on information from public records to come to the conclusion that President Bola Tinubu is the person who attended CSU.

“I am not aware that the FBI contacted CSU on whether Bola Tinubu attended CSU. Between 1979 and when I assumed duties, CSU must have had at least six registrars. I never spoke to Ms. Davies. Some policies have changed over the years.”

On the replaced diploma, he said: “When there is a replacement diploma, it is done by outside vendors. I don’t know who created Exhibit # 6.

“The institution decided that my name should not be typed on the ‘To whom it may concern’ letter because of the sheer volume of requests I was getting.

“Before CSU, I was at UC, Berkeley and UC, Irving. I’m sure people make mistakes in data entry from time to time. Before this lawsuit, I didn’t know anyone Bola.

”It was possible that someone assumes Bola to be a female and therefore marked the Southwest transcript as such. I am familiar with the affidavit filed by Olajide Adeniji. I don’t recall his gender.

”I don’t know if Atiku Abubakar is male or female but I heard is a male. I can’t tell by his name. I checked the record and confirmed that Olajide Adeniji and Bola Tinubu were at CSU at the same time.

”The person (Olajide) said he ran in a closely-contested race against Bola Tinubu for the leadership of the Accounting Student Union.

”I see that he said the same person he ran against is now the president of Nigeria.

”The Bola Tinubu who attended Southwest College took Accounting courses. I see the address indicated for Bola Tinubu. It’s not far from CSU.

“I looked at the whole record in making the determination that the Bola Tinubu who is the president of Nigeria today is the same person who attended CSU.

“The entries’1952’ and ‘1954’ could have been made in error. The courses taken by Bola Tinubu at Southwest and CSU are consistent.

“Right after the entry ‘F’, the SSN entered indicated in the Southwest transcript is the same as the one that was indicated in CSU records. That is one of the indicia that we use to identify students. A social security is a unique identifier.

”I recognise Southwest College as a feeder school for CSU. Bola Tinubu graduated with Honours. It’s a GPA distinction. It is awarded to high performing students.

Accounting is a rigorous major. He graduated with Honours.”

Responding to another question, he said: “Yes, certain students are more motivated than others. The students who are more motivated go on to accomplish greater things in life. I’ve seen that.

”As far as I know, he’s the president of Nigeria. There were materials in Mr. Tinubu’s records that show that he was a male. I see the application to CSU. Mr. Tinubu identified himself as a male.

”His letter of admission identified him as a male. It says:

‘Dear Mr. Tinubu’ I see the entry on APC’s website wherein President Bola Tinubu was said to have been born in Lagos on March 29, 1952. I don’t have a copy of the diploma that was submitted to INEC. So, I can’t comment on it.

”I am not aware of the fact that in the form that he submitted to INEC he claimed a different nationality or date of birth.

”Yes, our records show that he was born on March 29th. One has ‘1954’ while the other shows ‘1952’. From time to time, people do make mistakes when making such entries. We know Mr. Tinubu’s Social Security #. It’s contained in his records.”

  • Tinubu: Five major speeches in less than five months

By September 29, 2023, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had spent exactly four months in office, he had delivered four major speeches in which he variously outlined his agenda (or parts thereof) for the country and his vision of Nigeria’s role in West Africa, Africa, and the world. The four speeches were (1) the inauguration speech on May 29; (2) the Democracy Day speech on June 12; (3) the speech on the economy (some see it as the speech on palliatives) on July 31; and (4) the speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 19. In addition to these speeches, he delivered a fifth one last Sunday on the occasion of the nation’s 63rd independence anniversary on October 1, 2023. That was at the beginning of his fifth month in office.

As usual with the Nigerian press, plenty of noise is made about each speech within days of its delivery and the noise dies down within a week. Some analyse each speech for what it actually contains, while others analyse it for what it does not contain. Some see a half-empty glass in each speech, while others see a half-full glass. Yet others, blinded by pathological hatred, see nothing at all—they go on a rant on what they would have liked to hear but was not in the speech or they twist what was said to suit what they wanted to hear. Few ever go back to the speeches in the bid to remind the President of his promises and nudge him on the path of achieving them, forgetting that the success of his administration is our collective success.

Yet, the speeches are a call for action by all arms of government. However, citizen participation is also necessary for the implementation of government activities. One of the functions of the press is to inform citizens of the government’s agenda and educate them about their role in their implementation. After all, citizens are the beneficiaries of the agenda. Of all negative criticisms that could be raised against the Tinubu administration, failure to state its agenda is not, and should never be, one of them. He has left nothing unsaid, from the Renewed Hope manifesto to the speeches mentioned above. What is more, the speeches have grown with his administration, from his vision for the country in his inaugural speech to his view on global cooperation in the UNGA speech. And with the growth of the speeches is the widening of the President’s horizon from Abuja to the far corners of the globe via New Delhi at the 18th G20 Summit and New York at the 73rd UNGA meetings.

True, all the speeches have one thing or the other to say about domestic policy, the first three speeches as well as the Independence anniversary speech focus largely on domestic issues, while the UNGA speech takes a leap to the world at large.

Although the inauguration speech is now remembered for the aftermath of the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the multiple exchange rates, it also reiterated the President’s manifesto on various sectors beyond the economy, including security, agriculture, infrastructure, jobs, and foreign policy.

Above all, it was an inspirational speech, in which the President pledged inclusivity and collectivity. In particular, he reached out to political opponents, who “shall forever be my fellow compatriots … represent(ing) important constituencies and concerns that wisdom dare not ignore”. Moreover, “I shall serve with prejudice toward none but compassion and amity towards all”. Never mind that some political opponents continue on their wild goose chase of ever elusive victory, while others continue on their agenda of delegitimising the election and throwing dirt on the victor.

Within two weeks of inauguration, the President again gave a major speech on the need to continue on the path of democracy, in honour of Chief MKO Abiola, whose election was inexplicably annulled by the military government, and died in pursuit of his mandate, while also honouring the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy (some with their lives), following the annullment of the election. Nevertheless, the President never took his eyes off the economy as he reiterated the key measures he had taken so far.

The third speech on the economy was primarily a follow-up to the removal of fuel subsidy and the provision of palliatives to cushion the effects of the hike in fuel prices that followed. In the speech, the President spelled out a range of measures that would ameliorate the effects of the economic policies (for details, see Akinnaso, The President’s speech on the economy, The Nation, August 2, 2023). Admittedly, a number of the measures need longer gestation periods as is usual with socioeconomic measures in general.

Unfortunately, the labour unions have chosen to allign with the opposition, and the press has not been helpful in properly educating union leaders and the public about the usual delay for economic measures to take effect. Even in the United States, where President Joe Biden developed various economic measures two years ago to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, some states are still reeling from the effects and the measures have yet to fully mature.

It was in the UNGA speech that President Tinubu rose to the level of a global statesman. He spoke for Nigeria, West Africa, and the African continent as a whole. The speech sought to place Africa on equal footing with the rest of the world  in the negotiation for economic benefits: The rest of the world should be prepared to do business with Nigeria and Africa “in a equal, mutually beneficial manner” (for a comprehensive review of the speech and the President’s other activities at the UNGA meetings, see Tunde Rahman, 78th UNGA: President Tinubu and his defining moment, The Nation, September 30, 2023).

In the Independence speech given last Sunday, October 1, 2023, the President revisited the economic measures and rolled out new ones. He also outlined new measures on monetary policy and tax administration. Furthermore, he emphasised key investment funding for small and medium scale enterprises. Other key measures include the expansion of the social register to involve additional 15 million people; boosting employment rates; and equipping the security forces. Despite the clarity of the President’s speech, the Peoples Democratic Party saw or heard nothing (see Tinubu’s Independence Day speech was empty, bereft of ideas, The Cable, October 2, 2023)!

What is missing in all the speeches is review of the civil service, which is sorely needed as that is the arm of government primarily involved in the implementation of government programmes at federal and state levels. Equally needed is a clear, free-standing agency, department, or commission, dedicated to the evaluation of job performance, according to verifiable key performance indices. These are subjects to be taken up in a subsequent essay.

Director, Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO), Steve Aluko, has urged President Bola Tinubu to call  politicians  participating in the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State  to order.

CLO said this was necessary to forestall the breakdown of law and order .

Speaking to reporters in Jos, the Plateau State capital on the pre-election violence that is  erupting in parts of the state, the Director said the news of attacks on party supporters and campaign offices, especially the Social Democratic Offices (SDP) is unacceptable.

Citing cases of violence during the 2019 election in the state, Aluko called on the President to declare emergency on security in the state.

He also said all political parties should be given equal rights and freedom to contest and campaign  without fear of intimidation.

Aluko stressed that this is the first election being conducted under President Bola Tinubu’s watch, and he should  nip in the bud the brewing crisis .

He also urged the security agents to live up to their responsibilities and avoid partisanship.

He called on all stakeholders  to  ensure the election is devoid of violence.

Meanwhile, the Kogi Police Command has  launched an investigation into alleged reports of political clashes and violence.

Police  Commissioner  Onuoha Bethrand, in a statement  in Lokoja through the Command’s Spokesman, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, said that the police would not tolerate any act of lawlessness in the state.

The commissioner directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to begin a thorough, diligent and holistic investigation of all acts of political violence, accusations and counter-accusations on all the political parties and actors with a view to bringing all offenders to book.

  • Why release of Tinubu’s certificates dashed Atiku’s hope, by Wahab Shittu

Why release of Tinubu’s certificates dashed Atiku’s hope, by Wahab Shittu

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Wahab Shittu, said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) case involving Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the February 25 election may have collapsed completely.

Despite the release of Tinubu’s educational results as ordered by Justice Nancy Maldonado of the Northern District of Illinois Court, USA, Shittu believes this does not alter the likely outcome of the case.

Atiku’s application sought four categories of documents from Chicago State University (CSU), which confirmed Tinubu’s graduation in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Shittu gave six reasons he contended that the release of the academic records of President Tinubu might be of no effect.

According to the erudite senior lawyer, aside from the fact that CSU exists, there is proof that President Tinubu attended the institution, stressing that his claim is not a fabrication.

Shittu said another positive point is that Chicago State University has confirmed it issued certificates to President Tinubu as a consequence of his attendance at the school.

He said: “The constitutional requirements for qualification to aspire for the presidency is at least school certificate level or its equivalent. The three diplomas issued by the university satisfy this requirement.”

He also noted that the university has not denied issuing the certificate issued to the president in 1979 adding that “the school merely says it does not keep duplicate copies of issued certificates.

“That is an administrative and internal arrangement of the University for which President Tinubu cannot be held responsible.”

“Lastly, a case of forgery against President Tinubu was not established. It collapsed.”

Shittu argued that the distortions being made are of no moment and listed issues which he said are Germaine in the matter.

“There are three issues here. Is President Tinubu qualified to run by constitutional provisions? The answer is yes.

“Did President Tinubu forge a Chicago State University certificate? The answer is No.

“Did he attend Chicago State University? The answer is Yes.”

Shittu said the ongoing media war on the matter is of no consequence as cases are not decided on social media.

The SAN further noted that Abubakar’s motives in the matter are twofold but that both motives have collapsed.

He said Abubakar’s intention was first to show that President Tinubu never attended Chicago State University as he claimed.

He said the second was to show that President Tinubu forged a certificate from Chicago State University.

Shittu added: “The sole aim is to get President Tinubu disqualified so that Atiku can assume the presidential seat since he came second in the presidential race.”

Tinubu not parading female certificate, Onoh mocks critics

President Bola Tinubu’s former image maker in the south East, Dr. Josef Onoh, has taken a swipe at critics claiming the President’s certificate released by the Chicago State University bears the mark of a female graduate other than President Tinubu who is a man.

According to Onoh, the oppositions making the false claim of female ownership of the certificate, are ignorant of the Federal law under the Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) which gives Tinubu the right to ask to have his education records corrected if he believes them to be inaccurate.

“So it’s a simple issue of applying for correction,” he said.

Onoh stated that even in Nigeria, there are rooms for such correction if spotted by any certificate bearer, noting that Tinubu’s critics are drowning political gamblers looking for anything to hold on to against the president after they were defeated at the March 18 presidential election poll.

He lampooned the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi for dissipating so much energy, causing embarrassment for Nigeria and distraction for President Tinubu in making progress with his renewed hope mandate.

Onoh described as fake news the story in the opposition quarters that the released CSU certificate belonged to a female owner, arguing that those struggling to pull down President Tinubu would always look for an excuse to remain in the consciousness, even at a wrong side of it.

Read Also: CSU: Nothing to celebrate in Atiku’s pyrrhic victory— Onoh

Onoh said: “Tinubu was an outstanding student when he was in the university and all through his university career, he identified as a Man, even in his university yearbook, his picture shows that the Tinubu in question is a man. All letters addressed to him from the Chicago University always referred to him as Mr. Tinubu and not Miss Tinubu. So, that thing is clearly an error and nothing much to make noise about. Go and verify.

“It’s not a big deal. Nigerians with their qualifications, university degrees, cannot say that they have never come across an error, even in the spelling of their names, but when these errors are observed, its normal, it does not invalidate the certificate, it does not make it a false documents, it does not invalidate the relevance of the certificate, because the owner of the certificate has the right to have such errors corrected.

“So the noise of trying to show that President Tinubu’s certificate is fake is actually a pursuit in futility because they have lost every other angle to hold on to. The world is not ruled by emotion but by substance and it’s unfortunate that some gullible Nigerians have been deceived by a pure water manufacturer and a Tomato paste importer.”

“All that remains for the opposition is to secure a court order requesting for the CTC of the President’s restaurant bill during his visit in Paris and claim it was fake and not issued by the waiter or waitress.

“I had earlier warned and offered free education to Atiku and his Holywood wannabe US lawyer of the implications of his fishing adventure, position of the law and emphasized he will meet an empty dinner table when he returns. Today he has expended his energy on a wild goose chase and the data of multitude of emotional driven gullible Nigerians. Now you know why Tinubu is called the “JAGABAN”

“I urge both Atiku (Daddy cool) and H.E. Peter Obi to come let’s work together with Mr. President and build our great nation for we remain one nation, one destiny.”

Tinubu graduated from CSU in 1979, says school

The Chicago State University (CSU) has responded to the request by former vice president Atiku Abubakar in line with an Illinois, United States (U.S.) court order.

In its compliance with the September 30 judgment by Justice Nancy Maldonado of the Northern District of Illinois Court, the CSU insisted that it does not keep copies of diploma certificates issued to students.

Atiku had, by his application, sought for four categories of documents from the CSU.

The school also confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu graduated in 1979.

The CSU said Tinubu graduated frm in 1979 with a bachelors’ degree in Business Administration.

It explained that after diligent search, it was able to find some diploma certificates. It did not give the names because of privacy concerns.

It further said that it could not find that of Tinubu which Atiku claimed was presented by the president to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The university said it found some diploma certificates with the same font as the one being queried by Atiku.

The response, signed by lawyer to the CSU, Michael D. Hayes, is titled: “Response to applicant’s (Atiku’s) revised subpoena to produce documents.”

It reads in part: “Respondent, Chicago State University (“CSU”), by its undersigned counsel, for its response to applicant’s revised subpoena to produce documents dated September 13, 2023, states as follows:

“Request No. 1: A true and correct copy of any diploma for a Bachelor of Science degree issued by CSU in 1979.

“Response to request No. 1: The documents responsive to this request which CSU, after diligent search, has been able to locate are produced herewith and Bates labelled CSU 0001 through CSU 0007. The students’ names on these diplomas have been redacted for privacy reasons.
