I love Davido, I’ll never betray him – Tiwa Savage declares

Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has said she still holds fellow music icon Davido in high regard despite their recent public fallout.

Speaking in a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, Savage clarified that the disagreement arose from a miscommunication, which was perceived as threat by Davido.

“I think it was a miscommunication,” she noted. “I think out of anger maybe he might have made threats.”

According to Tiwa, she filed a police report as a precautionary measure to protect herself, not out of hostility.

She emphasised that she doesn’t believe Davido would act on his threats, but she couldn’t take any risks, especially considering that others might take action based on his words.

“He might have made threats, do I think he was really going to go ahead with it? No, but again I’m not taking any risks,” she said. “You could be saying it around people who wanna now act out on what you’re saying”, she said.

Before resorting to official measures, Tiwa Savage said she attempted to resolve the matter quietly by reaching out to Davido’s older family members, asking them to help mediate the situation, adding that none of them responded.

“Before I did that though I reached out to members of his family, I’m not gonna say names, but people that are older than him, and I said okay I’m hearing threats can we solve this and none of them came back to me,” she said. “Just for the record, before I do anything can we solve this?”, she added.

Tiwa Savage, despite the tension, reaffirmed her love and respect for Davido, describing him as her brother.

She stressed that she would never betray him or take sides against him, emphasising that their bond remains rooted in mutual respect.

“I haven’t spoken to you David but I do want you to know that I do love you and I would never betray you or take sides,” she said.

The disagreement between the two singers started in January 2024, after Tiwa Savage shared a photo with Davido’s first baby mama, Sophia Momodu, on social media amid the DMW boss’ child custody battle with Sophia.

Stay humble amid fame – Tiwa Savage urges colleagues

Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has advised her fellow artists to remain humble and grounded despite their growing fame and global recognition.

Speaking in an interview with Hot 97 FM in New York, Savage reminded artists that they are only ambassadors of the Afrobeats movement and that fame can be fleeting.

She stressed that success comes from God and can be taken away at any moment, making humility essential.

According to her, while the music industry offers great highs, it can also bring devastating falls if integrity is lost.

Savage added that she would rather forgo fame entirely than compromise her integrity after achieving success.

“We are just ambassadors, we are just like the faces of Afrobeats. And that’s why we can’t let it get into our heads, because we are just vessels and there can be somebody else.

“God can take it away like that. So, you have to be grounded. You have to be humble. Imagine coming this far and then falling. That is worse than not ever tasting fame. I would rather have never seen in my life than seen and lost my sight. That is worse for me.

“So, for me, it is like, I have tasted this thing now, I have to be humble. Just for God’s sake”, Savage said.

The ‘Malo’ hitmaker also shared her admiration for some of her colleagues.

Savage also commended Tems for her mysterious and low-key persona, as well as Diamond Platnumz for his talent and dedication to promoting his community through music.

“I love Ayra Starr, it’s almost an obsession. I see myself in her, but I see a more confident one; when I was starting out, if I saw an article that my skirt was too short, the next time I might wear trousers. But Ayra would wear a skirt that is even shorter the next time. I love her confidence.

“I love the mystery behind Tems. You don’t know too much about her and she doesn’t care. I love Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania. He is so talented and he has put his community on the map”, she said.

Speaking on Joe Budden’s podcast, Tiwa disclosed that her ex-partner insisted their romance remain private, claiming public knowledge would hinder his ability to “work the room” at events.

She recounted how the secrecy left her feeling silenced, as she often watched him openly flirt and mingle with other women while she was unable to confront him.

“It’s the disrespect,” she said. “I am a public figure and he is as well. He told me he didn’t want us to go public. He said, ‘When we’re out, I might be talking to other people, but I’m only doing it so people don’t suspect.’ I couldn’t say anything. It was happening right in front of me.”

According to her, the relationship eventually ended due to the issues.

Her revelation came as she celebrates a major career milestone with the release of her 13-track album This One Is Personal, which explores themes of pain, healing, and growth.
