I haven’t experienced true love in relationships – Tiwa Savage

Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has revealed her struggles with finding true love, admitting that the only genuine love she has experienced is the one she shares with her 10-year-old son, Jamil.

Speaking in a recent interview with ZeZe Mills, the singer reflected on her romantic relationships, including her marriage to Tunji Balogun from 2013 to 2018.

She confessed that what she once believed to be love was, in hindsight, mere infatuation.

“I don’t think I’ve experienced true love apart from my son. Because every time I look back at all my relationships, I’m like, nah, that wasn’t love. I was just infatuated. At that time, I thought I was in love. I don’t think I experienced true love even when I was married,” the singer said.

Savage said she has now concluded that maybe love isn’t for her because she has tried over and over to find true love to no avail.

“Maybe love isn’t for me because I have tried over and over again, so maybe love isn’t for me this lifetime,” she added.

Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has officially ended her professional relationship with her manager, Kemi “Mekka” Akunyili.

In a series of Instagram posts, the singer voiced her frustration, stating she is “tired” of the ongoing confusion and warned fans and promoters that she no longer works with Mekka.

She emphasised that she will not be liable for any financial loss arising from engagements with him.

Tiwa directed all bookings to her new manager, Vanessa Amadi, and cautioned that any transactions made through other channels will be considered void.

She expressed disappointment that, despite multiple notices, people still contact Mekka for bookings, leading to potential losses.

While noting that she rarely addresses personal matters publicly, the singer said she had to make this clarification to protect her fans and business partners.

“Abeg e don do. I have nothing to do with Mekka. Even if it goes through him and eventually gets to me, I will refuse booking.

“I have said it many times, but people still call him for bookings. I hate coming on social media for this, but I can’t reach every promoter individually.

“I just got a call that the money for a booking I have coming up was just paid to his personal account. Your people will lose your money. I’m saying it again for the last time because I will not be responsible for you losing your money.”

The moment, she said, served as a reminder of the deep bond between mother and child and the rewarding nature of motherhood despite its challenges.

“Last night, I was reminded of one of the hardest things about being a mom: you still have to discipline your child and be strict, even when it breaks your heart. I’m a very, very strict mother. Everyone knows this.

“But last night, I went off on him. And this is why he melts my heart so much…I woke up and saw that he had quietly come to sleep next to me. I had slept on the couch, and he still came to lie beside me, my baby. I was shouting earlier… ahhh. Yet he still came close, seeking comfort. Being a mother is tough. But it’s also the best feeling in the world”, she said in the video.

“I was pregnant when I recorded ‘R.E.D’. I would be in the studio crying with my big belly. It was a struggle to record the album.

“I changed the key of some of the songs in the album because being pregnant affected how high I could hit some notes.

I was once a tomboy before rebranding – Tiwa Savage

Award-winning singer Tiwa Savage has shared her transformation story, revealing she was once a tomboy before her ex-husband and former manager, Tunji Balogun, rebranded her image.

She said in an interview how Balogun changed her style, encouraged her to lose weight, work out, and adopt a more glamorous look to fit the market’s demands.

Savage noted that she initially conformed to the new image, which attracted both attention and criticism, before she eventually found her footing in the Nigerian music industry.

She said, “The sexiness in my 2024 single ‘Wanted’ music video felt groundbreaking at that time. Because I just got married and there’s a lot of press saying, ‘She’s not going to be desirable anymore. She’s finished. Her time is gone. There are new people on the scene.’ So, I was just like, let me do something crazy.

“That was me being rebellious. I was like, Oh! You guys think I’m not sexy anymore? To be honest, that wasn’t the aim, to just try to be sexy. Because naturally, I’m not. Naturally, I’m a tomboy. But again, TJ [Tunji Balogun] saw that there was a gap in the market and he was just like, you’ve to lose weight, you’ve to go to the gym, you’ve to start waxing your eyebrows. You’ve to start wearing wigs. He literally changed my whole appearance. I was not like that in L.A. when he met me.

“I used to be a songwriter in the studio wearing baggy jeans and t-shirt. And he literally changed that. I don’t think that he thought there was going to be a backlash. He was just like, let’s give them the African Rihanna or Beyoncé. I was like, okay, let’s go ahead. And we came back to Nigeria, but my fashion sense attracted criticism. Then, I ran back to L.A.

“I was really bad. I would go to shows and I would be waiting backstage and they wouldn’t call me because maybe the governor’s wife had said I can’t come up or they’d say, make sure you don’t wear any of those your skimpy dresses. I’m not making this up. There was a time, ‘Love Me’ was banned on TV. I was discouraged. I remembered Bizzle called me and told me ladies were loving me, so I came back to Nigeria. I’ve told the story where I went to all the labels and they all said no, Storm Records, Mo’Hits, Banky W’s EME, everyone”.

Savage said: “And for me, I personally think because I didn’t start at a young age, I had years of building a foundation of me as a person. Because my first single, I think I was in my 30s. Yeah. I’m not a kid at that point. So I wasn’t fazed by the fame and money, like a lot of people, you don’t have to deal with that. So, and by then, I’ll seen a lot of people come and go, come and go.

“So when my time came, it was just like, I know this, I know even last a year, two years. So I was very intentional in like making this sustaining a lasting career. So I think me starting at such a late age was also a blessing.

“At the time, I didn’t think it was though. Yeah, I didn’t think so. I felt like I started late. That was that was that’s very, very, very. I mean, a lot of people was not that smart to change my passport. I should have. I should have lied and told y’all I was like 22. You would have believed it. Yeah, we would have”.

How Mavin Records signed me, by Tiwa Savage

Afrobeat singer Tiwa Savage has recounted asking music executive Don Jazzy to sign her to Mavin Records after he launched the label.

Tiwa, in an interview on Afrobeats Intelligence, revealed that she had approached him multiple times, and he eventually agreed.

Reflecting on her experience, Savage noted that being with a record label often means they prioritise business over personal issues, contrasting it with the familial bond she feels with her Mavin colleagues.

Tiwa Savage said: “So when Don Jazzy started Mavin, I went to him and I said can you sign me now? Because you didn’t sign me in Mo’Hits before. And now you’ve started Mavin. And he was just like, you know what? I don’t have a first lady.

“I asked again. Yes. Wow. Oh, my God. I don’t have shame. Yeah, you really, you really asked everyone. Yeah, I did. And I went to Jazzy and I asked him again. And then he just said, yes, like that.

“Like, yeah, your time, your time at Mavin. What did you learn from it as an artist and as a businesswoman? Who you sign to is very important. Like, I didn’t appreciate it until after I left.

“Like Mavin still is like family. So if there’s something that’s going on, like online or whatever, I promise you, I would run to Jazzy’s room and we will all come. Like Sid, Tega, Reekado, all of us in his room, on the floor, on the bed.

“We’ll talk about it if I have to cry and whatever. And we’ll get through it. Being with a label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff.

So I can’t really go to the Empire office and be like, oh my God. Like, I miss that part of it”.
