  • Buba Marwa, wife back on social radar

Popular figures may be gone for long but they are never forgotten. So it was that society watchers, especially those in the Lagos social milieu, waited with bated breath for the ‘triumphal return’ of one of their most beloved couples, Buba Marwa and wife, Munira. The former first citizens of Lagos State had gone on a long, seemingly unending hiatus from the social radar, leaving their numerous fans to wonder what had become of Marwa who once held sway as the military governor of Lagos State.

Buba Marwa is reputed as one of the most beloved military governors ever. His charisma and easy-going personality endeared him to the people while his populist policies cemented their affection for him. His beautiful wife, Munira, did her part supporting her husband as the first lady.

For a while after the handover to democratic rule, the former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa and his wife remained a hot item on the social scene, occupying a pride of place in the comity of distinguished celebrities. For some inexplicable reasons, however, they vanished into social wilderness. It was therefore refreshing to see the engaging pair once again on the social scene.

They were recently spotted among other guests at the just concluded Lagos at 50 celebrations, with Munira looking as radiant as ever.

My husband bites me always, woman tells court

A 45-year-old beer parlour operator, Mrs Kudirat Sodiq, Friday told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos that her husband always bites her whenever they quarrel.

She said that, Wahabi, her husband for 23 years, was also threatening her life.

“My husband left scars on my body as he always bites me whenever we fight.

“My husband will not leave me until he sees blood coming out from the wound; I have scars all over my body as proof of his abuse.”

The petitioner said that apart from the bites, her husband was also threatening her life.

“Wahabi is always threatening to kill me by suffocating me to death with a pillow.

“Because of his threat, I ran away from the house I built and relocated just to save my life.

“Last month, he came to my shop, threatening to  kill me; he smashed a beer bottle on the ground and wanted to stab me on my neck.

“I used my hand to dodge it and the bottle cut me on my right hand, blood was gushing out but for the quick intervention of neighbours who rushed me to the hospital, I could have died.”

The mother of four presented as exhibit recording of her husband’s alleged threat, and picture of her injured hand.

The woman also accused Wahidi of attempting to appropriate her house.

“My husband wanted to sell my house, he approached land grabbers asking for the original document of my house.

“The people called me to know if I was the one that sent my husband to come for the document.

“My husband drinks to stupor and smokes Indian hemp, after which he usually loses self- control.”

She begged the court to dissolve the union, saying she was no longer in love with her husband.

“I live every minute of my life in fear. Save me from the cruel hands of my husband, I have suffered so much in silence.”

Wahabi, on the other hand, said that his wife was adulterous and having extra marital affairs.

“I caught my wife inside her shop with a man cutting his nail, immediately I entered the man quickly stood up and left,” he said.

The 47-year-old transporter said that he has stopped smoking weeds and drinking alcoholic for some weeks.

The respondent said that he never threatened to kill his wife but that he stabbed her by mistake.

He made a fervent plea to the court not to dissolve the marriage, claiming that he was still in love with his wife.

The president of the court, Mr Adegboyega Omilola adjourned the case till July 25, for judgment.

Muiz Banire celebrates wife at 50

When you have lived with someone for a quarter of a century, you get to know them inside out and are in a better position to appreciate their qualities. And former national legal adviser of the ruling APC, Dr. Muiz Banire, is certainly grateful for all the wonderful times he has spent with his jewel of inestimable value Olufunmilayo.

Little wonder he took the opportunity of her 50th birthday celebrations last Friday to celebrate the beautiful woman in front of a crowd of happening men and women who thronged the couple’s Ikeja GRA residence to felicitate with Funmilayo on her golden age.

The event, witnessed by many important people from Banire’s Mushin constituency, began with fervent prayers for the celebrant, which was led by renowned Islamic clerics. The celebrant, Olufunmilayo, whose Muslim name Jamila means beautiful, was all smiles as she cut the brightly coloured birthday cake.

Dr Banire now runs Muiz Banire and associates after disengaging from party politics. He and his wife have been married for 24 years. His quiet wife has a foundation, Rhesus Solutions Initiative, which helps to create awareness on rhesus disease.

My wife drinks heavily, insults my father, man tells court

An Iletuntun Customary Court in Ibadan, on Wednesday dissolved a 15-year-old marriage between Lateef Saburi and his wife, Kafilat, over the latter’s drunkenness, adultery and rudeness.

Saburi, a businessman, had sued for divorce, citing adultery, rudeness and drunkenness.

“My lord, my wife is adulterous; she is always found in hotels and guest houses.

“My friends have met her at different joints and reported to me. I have tried to reform her, but she is beyond redemption.

“Recently, after drinking to stupor, Kafilat abused my father and directly called him by his name.

“That was the last straw that broke the Camel’s back because the entire members of my family concluded that she must go.

“I informed her parents and relatives of her waywardness, but even their intervention did not change her,” Lateef told the court.

Kafilat, however, did not deny any of the allegations against her.

She gave her nod to the divorce, but told the court that Lateef was “a very wicked husband, who usually beats me at the slightest provocation”.

“In fact, we were expelled from a rented apartment because of his violent attitude toward me.

“Lateef abandoned me and our two children. I did not know where he was and was shocked to discover, on his Facebook platform, that he has married another woman,’’she told the court.

Mr Henric Agbaje, the President of the court, in his judgment, granted the application for the divorce and effectively ended the union between Lateef and Kafilat.

“Granting the divorce will forestall any unforeseen circumstances because this marriage has broken down irretrievably,” he declared.

He granted custody of the second child of the union to Kafilat because he was still underage, while Lateef was granted custody of the first child.

Agbaje ordered Lateef to pay a monthly feeding allowance of N5,000 for the upkeep of the child in Kafilat’s care. (NAN)
