  • Loving your wife the Bible way! (2)

    Dear Reader,

    Welcome once again to this column. This month, God’s Word will make you better than you were last month, in Jesus’ name.

    Last week, we began looking at the topic: Loving Your Wife the Bible Way. We saw from scriptures that if a man would love his wife without conditions, he must lay hold on light from God’s Word, as seen in Ephesians 5:25.

    This week, I shall be teaching on what I have captioned: Love Expression! Everyone wants to be loved, and everyone needs love. Jesus showed this to be a healthy desire when He asked: Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? (John 21:15).

    Love is not love until it is expressed. Even God Almighty did not just assume He loved man; He expressed it by giving His most precious possession His Son. The Word of God says: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son… (John 3:16). You don’t just love in your heart or thoughts; you must go one step further by giving it an expression.

    Husband, until you comply with this commandment to love your wife the Bible way, you may never taste fulfilment in marriage. You make it automatically easy for your wife to response in total submission to you, when you exhibit unconditional love to her.  Remember, no woman resists love or hates to be loved. As you begin to love her wholeheartedly, not minding her errors, she will begin to respond to you, and your family harmony will be kept aflame, radiating the glory of God.

    If only husbands could learn to give their wives more attention and more time, their situation will brighten up. Some men can give a lot of money to their wives; but to give their time is the problem. They claim that their time is too precious to be wasted.

    Does spending quality time with your wife equal time wasting to you? To give a listening ear to what your wife is saying, thinking or going through should be of greater value to you than the physical or material things you may be privileged to give her. If only you can do this, your discussions with her will not always end in physical combat.  I know I’m communicating to someone right now.

    Husband, attempt to be 100% patient with your wife, as you may seem to know better than her. Allow her make her mistakes and lovingly intervene. By so doing, she will be more careful next time, so as not to make the same mistake.

    It is throbbing to know that most men find it difficult to say, “I love you.” Well, it could be a cultural hang-up; but Jesus, Who, though is God and is a man among men, set the pace when He told His disciples that He loved them and asked them if they loved Him (John 15:9).

    Saying the words, “I love you” to your wife, may be just what you need to do, to cause a transformation in your home. It doesn’t portray weakness like others conclude, but strength. Also, action speaks louder than words, they say. So, if you are confessing love for your wife, but you act selfishly by not giving money for her upkeep and that of the children (1 Timothy 5:8); screaming, “I love you” at the top of your voice, would have no meaning to her. This is because your actions are disproving your love.

    To sum up, God is love! To bring God, Who is righteousness, peace and joy personified into your marriage and home, you must love your wife unconditionally. Remember, love is not love until it is expressed. As you express your love to her in particular, and the family in general, great shall be your peace in every aspect of your life.

    Moreover, you need God’s help in expressing love to your wife, and that begins with you accepting Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour of your home. Say this prayer with me and Jesus will come into your heart, and your home: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”

    If you prayed this simple prayer, you are now a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

    Kelechi Osunwa, the  El Merreikh, Sporting Club’s Nigerian striker, will be the cynosure of all eyes today at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium (formerly Liberation Stadium) in Port Harcourt as he leads the Omdurman-side against his former side, Rivers United, in the CAF Champions League Round of 16 encounter.

    Osunwa has, indeed, come a long way from his days with the defunct Dolphin (one of the clubs along with Sharks FC that was morphed into Rivers United by the Rivers State government in February 2016) with an impressive scoring records from his stints with clubs in Nigeria, Thailand, Egypt and currently in Sudan where he has remarkably played for four clubs with scoring aplomb.

    Recently, the Confederation of African Football website credited him with an outstanding 30 goals in continental competitions after he scored his side’s solitary away goal in the victory over Sony Ela Nguema of Equatorial Guinea in the Champions League Preliminary Round last month. His 30-goal tally includes 10 goals when he was with Dolphin FC; nine each for Sudanese bitterest rivals, El Merreikh and El Hilal, and two for Ahly Shendy of Sudan.

    Last season, he reportedly emerged the top scorer of the Arab league and the continent at large, after netting 38 goals in all competitions for Ahly Shendy. It was a record in the history of Sudanese football as Osunwa took his goal account to 161 in a career spanning a period of 11 seasons.

    Speaking with The Nation Sport & Style, Osunwa said one of the secrets behind his stellar scoring quality is actually away from the hallowed turf of the ‘beautiful game’ but in the recess of his home:  his wife. Waxing philosophical like the late Nigerian statesman and first Premier of Western Nigerian, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who aptly described his wife (the late chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo) as ‘my jewel of inestimable value’ to bring home the truism in the popular saying that ‘behind every successful man, there is a woman’, Osunwa stated clearly that his wife has stood behind him like the Rock of Gibraltar.

    “I really like to keep my family away from the public sphere because I really enjoy my privacy,” Osunwa told our correspondent in a telephone conversation from his base in Omdurman. “I have a beautiful family, a fantastic wife with four children; two boys and two girls.

    “I met my wife during my playing days with Dolphin FC in Port Harcourt. We have been together for about 12 years now and God has truly blessed our family. I’m a family person and I always like to hang out with my family anytime I have the opportunity especially when they are on holidays as we can share some good times together,” he explained.

    While the wife remains a succour at home, Osunwa said she was duty bound to watch him ghost past his markers and she would most likely be rooting for him against Rivers United today in the eagerly expected Champions League match.

    He said: “Of course, when there is the opportunity, my wife likes to watch me play on the field and this also serves as a great motivation for me. She has been a very excellent person to me and she has always been very supportive morally and with prayers.  We have an excellent family and I’m grateful to God for this. I like the good things of life and, of course, I love football because it has given me so much possibilities.”

    Incidentally, Osunwa was born on October 15, 1984, in Rivers State and has reportedly played professional football since 2001. He played for defunct Dolphin before moving to Sudan to join Al-Hilal, with whom he reached the semi-final of the 2007 CAF Champions League.

    Two years later, he signed a three-year deal with El- El Merreikh, where he formed an all-Nigerian strike force with former Enyimba striker, Stephen Worgu, and deservedly won the Sudan Premier League in 2011 and 2013 Thereafter, he was on his way to Thailand where he signed a two-year contract with Thai Premier League side, BEC Tero Sasana, in January 2014.  After six months in Thailand, Osunwa signed a two-year deal with Ismaily of the Egyptian Premier League.

    He returned to Sudan to team up with Al Shendi and shattered all available goal scoring records including being the highest all-time top scorer of Sudan Premier League with over 150 goals.

    “My remarkable goal scoring form in Sudan has nothing to do with only myself but I have been well supported by my teammates,” noted Osunwa.“Of course, I  also work very hard but I don’t  go out to the pitch just thinking about the number of goals I’m going to score, rather I want to see how  much I can contribute to the success of my team. This has always been my responsibility and if the opportunity comes my way I’ll try to take it.

    “It has been a wonderful time here with my club and my target this season is to do well with my club because we are going to have a very long season with competitions in the CAF Champions League, Arab Champions League, The Sudan Cup and the League. It is going to be a long season and we are hoping to do very well in all these competitions. My hope is to do my very best for the team.”

    Speaking further about his odyssey in Africa and Asia, Osunwa reckoned that the Nigerian Professional Football league (NPFL) compares favourably with the best, adding he has enjoyed his time in Sudan.

    “Frankly, playing football in Sudan, Nigeria and Egypt is a tough job,” he explained. “In Sudan and Egypt, you have traditionally strong and dominant teams and its always a big task for other teams to win, whereas in Nigeria, there could be surprises.

    “But you have to work really hard to win anything whether in Nigeria, Egypt or Sudan. I played with Dolphin in Nigeria, Ismaily in Egypt and I have also played for all the big teams here in Sudan. I’m really focussed with my present team because as I said, we have some major competitions this new season and I will be very happy with very good performance.”

    The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was in full swing on the night Osunwa spoke with our correspondent and said that the gathering of the best teams and players in Gabon provided him with the opportunity of learning more about the tricks of goal scoring, even as he revealed his abiding love for former World Player of the Year and star of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan/Korea, Ronaldo.

    He explained: “It is always good to watch the African Cup of Nations since it gives me the opportunity to learn from so many other good players. The competition was tight from the quarter final stages as the teams showed their very best and we saw some losing out on penalties and others with narrow margins.

    “But no player fascinates me as much as Ronaldo de Lima. When I was growing up, I used to watch his tapes with special attention because the Brazilian was a natural goal scorer. He simply had eyes for goals and I learned so much from him.

    “Of course, lately I watch players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar and others because I can always learn one or two things from them too.  For me, there is no basis for comparing Ronaldo with Messi because they are two great players with different qualities. I just love watching the two players because they are two of the best players we have seen so far in the world.”

    Of course, life is not only a bed of roses and Osunwa also has his own tinge of regrets bordering on fringe appearances in the Nigeria’s national team colours. He was in the Golden Eaglets squad of 2001 where he scored five goals at the African Championships in Seychelles to emerge top scorer but he later missed out of the team to the World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. He later played for the national U-23 team a and featured for the senior team at the 2004 LG Cup in Tripoli, Libya.

    “It has always been the dream of any player to play for his country and I feel the same way too, though I have not been lucky with call ups,” he hobbled over the phone. “It will be a great honour for me to play for the Super Eagles. I have watched their recent matches under the new coach (Gernot Rohr) and you can see that there is great competition in the team now. I will be delighted if I can be called to play for the Super Eagles, but now, I will continue to work very hard with my club and who knows what can happen.”

  • Loving your wife the Bible way!

    Dear Reader,

    Happy New Month! A new month has just begun with new opportunities to make life count more for you and your family. I can tell you that God is set to do something more glorious, in your life and family this month.

    This month, I shall be speaking extensively to the men, as we examine the topic: Loving Your Wife the Bible Way. It is my prayer that as you open your heart to receive and act on God’s Word concerning your family today, your marriage and home will experience a positive transformation in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

    What is love? The Advanced Learners Dictionary defines love as warm liking or affection. It is also described as affectionate devotion. Love is a major requirement for making your marriage successful. It is the major material required in building and transforming your house into a home.

    The love I will be examining, however, is not the type of love the world has to offer which says, “If you love me, I will love you in return.” The type of love I am emphasizing is God’s kind of love. It is from the Greek word “AGAPE.”  It is an unconditional love. It is the kind of love that says: in spite of your faults and shortcomings, I love you all the same.

    God’s Word says: But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Just as God did not wait for you to be perfect before sending His Son to die for you, husband, do not lay down conditions for your wife, before loving her.

    The Bible says: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it… (Ephesians 5:25). This love is not optional but mandatory. It is an instruction that must be obeyed.

    God is telling husbands to love their wives, sacrificially and unconditionally. This does not depend on your wife’s character; rather, it is in obedience to the Word of God. Christ’s love for His Church is not only when she obeys Him, but even when she offends also (Romans 5:8). God’s Word instructs you to love your wife, in spite of her shortcomings.

    This testimony of amazing restoration will encourage you: I have been married for 12 years, but up to last year, my marriage was in shambles. By November, I came to this church in tears. I removed my wedding ring, put it in an envelope and said, ‘God, I put in this ring here because I want you to restore my marriage.’

    When I got home, I was ready for another confrontation from my husband who never goes to church; all he does is sit with his beer bottle. But, when I entered the room, he said, ‘Honey welcome. How was church and your Bishop?’ I was surprised! He said, ‘My darling wife, you look tired. Go and take your bath, I have prepared food for you to eat.’ I did not believe it; I thought it was a trick.

    He asked if I was surprised, I said, ‘Yes.’ He then told me that while I was in church, he laid down to watch the TV, and suddenly, he heard a voice audibly call him saying, ‘Sit up! What have you done about your marriage? Set your home right.’ That made him go on his knees, weeping and he told God he was sorry and that was the beginning of good things. I never knew that marriage could be so blissful!”  Agbetiku, U.

    Your home also could become a place where joy, laughter, excitement and peace are the order of the day. It can be the home God created it to be. Just make it a duty to love your wife not only by saying it, but also showing it, and you will discover that your home will become a delight to yourself and the envy of others.

    You can’t, however, love effectively without accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. Remember, without Him, you can do nothing; but with Him there is more than enough grace to love. You can accept Him by saying this prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”

  • Man arrested for raping stepdaughter

    Police on Wednesday in Niger state arrested a 45-year-old-man, over alleged rape of his three-year-old stepdaughter.

    The suspect was arrested in Kundu, a village in Rafi Local Government Area of the state.

    Abdullahi Mayaki, Police Inspector attached to the state Child Rights Protection Agency, said that the mother of the girl, Malama Fatima Bawa, reported the matter to the agency.

    He said that the suspect, however, denied the allegation during investigation, claiming that he only intervened whenever his wife beat the girl.

    But Bawa had told the agency that she caught her husband sexually abusing her daughter after he approached her for sex at night and she refused him.

    “My husband likes sex too much, so I chased him out of the room in the night and locked the door.

    “It was after I chased him out that I heard my daughter, who was sleeping in the parlour, crying.

    “I quickly ran to her only to see my husband abusing my daughter sexually.

    “I am a breast feeding mother and I spend the whole of my day taking care of the children, yet my husband does not allow me to rest,” she told the agency in her statement.

    Bawa alleged that she saw blood stained and semen on the girl’s body and informed her brother in-laws wife about the incident who advised her to take the girl to the hospital.

    The Director-General of the agency, Hajiya Mariam Kolo, said that the victim would be treated in the hospital.

    Kolo also said that the suspect would be charged to court in accordance with Section 18 of the Child Rights Law.

    The Director-General described the act as ‘ungodly’, saying that the state government would no longer condone any form of violence against children and women.

    An estranged husband, Clifford Monday, on Wednesday admitted in an  Akure Customary Court that he only beat his wife, Bukola, whenever she flouted his instructions.

    Clifford made this known when he testified in a divorce petition filed by the wife.

    He told the the court that Bukola was the main cause of the misunderstanding they had in the union.

    He also admitted he destroyed his wife’s property, adding that his wife used tricks to extort money from him.

    Ealier, the petitioner, urged the court to dissolve the 11-year-old marriage for alleged constant beating, drunkenness, promiscuity and insensitivity to her.

    Bukola gave an instance when the respondent beat her during her second pregnancy to stupor and attempted to abort the pregnancy but her mother intervened.

    She said that the respondent always raised suspicion on all her movements, and had abandoned her and the three children of the marriage.

    The President of the court, Mr Ayodele Omotola, held that the evidences before the court showed there was no marriage between the two parties.

    Omotola noted that the court’s priority and consideration were on the products of the union.

    He, therefore, dissolved the union and ordered the respondent to pay N10,000 monthly to the court for the upkeep of the children.

    He further said that the respondent would be responsible for the education of the children.

    The president awarded custody of the children to the petitioner and gave the respondent unhindered access to the children.

    He said that both parties would be responsible for the medical and clothings of the kids. (NAN)

  • Lawmaker, wife hold APC Women Appreciation day in Lagos

    Member representing Ikorodu Federal constituency, Babajimi Adegoke Benson and his wife Olajumoke hosted the APC Women’s Appreciation Day. It was to celebrate women in politics of the ancient town.

    The event, which was organised by the iCare Foundation, was held at Regal Hall in Olo-Odo.

    The event was attended by former Senator Ganiu Solomon, and wife of Lagos State governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode.

    Mrs Benson thanked the women for contributing to the success of the party in Lagos, especially in Ikorodu division.

    She reiterated the commitment of her husband to fulfilling his electoral promises.

    Benson also thanked the women, who she described as the bedrock of the nation.

    He also appreciated Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his compassion towards women. He also praised the Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiatives (HOFOWEN), a pet project of Mrs Ambode.

    A 29-year-old housewife, Onyinyechi Akunne has been arraigned before an Ikeja High Court for allegedly killing her 35-year-old husband, Abuchi Akunne, with a kitchen knife over a lottery ticket.
    The prosecutor, Mrs C.K Tuiyi-Carena, told Justice Josephine Oyefeso that the accused committed the offence on March 28, 2015 at her residence at 85, Idimu Road, Ejigbo.
    She said: “On the day of the alleged murder, Onyinyechi was preparing a meal while Abuchi was sitting on a chair in their home looking at his ‘Baba Ijebu’ lottery tickets.
    “Angered by her husband’s action, Onyinyechi scolded him for his love for gambling and a fight ensued between them.
    “She took the kitchen knife she was using to cut vegetables and stabbed her husband fatally in the chest. The stabbing inflicted a deep cut in Abuchi’s chest which led to excessive blood loss and his eventual death. The victim died before he could be taken to hospital by Onyinyechi and concerned neighbours.”
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that accused was pregnant when the offence was committed.
    She, however, gave birth to a baby girl while in custody at the Kirikiri Female Prisons.
    Onyinyechi was in court on Monday with the baby.
    Counsel to the accused, Mr Q.U. Ogudu, told the court that the accused had opted for a plea bargain.
    “My Lord, we have applied for a plea bargain agreement which the state is not objecting to.”
    The prosecutor also confirmed to the court that the parties were working towards the plea bargain.
    Justice Josephine Oyefeso adjourned the case to April 6 for a report on the plea bargain agreement.
