  • ‘I only threatened my wife with hot water’

A 40-year-old trader, Salau Kehinde, yesterday admitted beating up his wife, Shakirat, over sex, but denied planning to pour hot water on her.

Kehinde was taken by his wife before an Ikorodu Customary Court, Lagos, for dissolution of their marriage.

He agreed that he used to beat her whenever she denied him of sex and if she came home late from her trading business, but he “merely boiled the water so he could threaten her with it. I had no intention of bathing her with hot water.”

“She refused to cook for me when she was pregnant. She also said I should look for another wife,” he added.

Speaking earlier, Shakirat, 32, told the court that they got married 10 years ago and had two children together, but had been living separately for two years now.

She said: “He always refused to give me money and this made us quarrel and fight a lot. I had to leave him when he kept threatening to pour hot water on me.

“His friend advised him to beat me up and he became fond of beating me. He would beat me whenever I returned from work, he would beat me when I told him I was too tired to have sex, or for any flimsy excuse.”

She added that Kehinde also lacked respect for her family.

When the court’s president, Olu Adebiyi, asked her what she wanted, she replied: “I want this court to dissolve our marriage and grant me custody of our children.”

Kehinde promised to stop beating or threatening her, saying he was willing to take her back if she wants to stay with him.

The court adjourned the matter to September 13.

  • Cleric seeks divorce from fourth wife after 31 years of marriage

A 65-year-old clergyman, Olowolade David Laizer, is seeking divorce from his fourth wife, Esther, after 31 years of marriage.

Laizer, who has six wives, told a customary court sitting in Ikorodu, yesterday, that the 55-year-old Mrs Laizer lacks respect for the house of God.

The clergyman alleged that his wife rains curses on his church at the slightest provocation and had denied him conjugal rights for over a year.

Laizer said their problems started when they lost their first son in 2013.

The deceased was a university student, but died after a brief illness.

“There was a parental dispute between her family and mine when we wanted to get married, so, we had to do two separate introductions. She even said I would die within three years if I divorced her,” Laizer said.

Mrs Laizer, a teacher, said her husband preaches about her in the church.

She said: “He says all sorts of things about me in his sermons. Yes, I’ve denied him of sex for over a year now because he said my private part is smelling…after 31 years of marriage and five children!

“Four days after I lost my son, his sixth wife came into my room and took my pant and bra. I don’t know what she used it for, but she returned it later. She also cooked for me and put six pieces of meat in the soup. I refused to eat it because I don’t know what that meant for or who sent her.”

The court’s president, Olu Adebiyi, encouraged both parties to keep the peace and told them to come with their family members on September 14, for possible reconciliation.

  • ‘My wife isn’t the woman I married’

I keep wondering what happened to the woman who promised me heaven and earth; the woman who vowed to be the best wife in the world. I really don’t know what my wife has turned into.”

These were the words of a 39-year-old civil servant, Oluwasegun Dosu, as he prayed the Lagos Island Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his 12-year- old marriage to his wife, Adenike.

The petitioner said his wife doesn’t cook for him nor clean the house, adding that she was fond of going out without his consent and returning home late.

“I used to be responsible for the school fees of three of my wife’s siblings when they were living with us. However, I asked them to move out of my home when I caught one of them having an affair with a man. My wife was obviously miffed. As a result, she fought me and tore my dress,” he said.

He also said he takes care of everything in the house, lamenting that even when he spent so much money on Adenike’s business, she couldn’t make account of it.

“Last year, she left the house with our children without any sign. All I want is our children. I want them in my custody,” he said.

The 38-year-old civil servant, Mrs Dosu, in her defence, said her husband  was lying, saying they usually had quarrel over unnecessary issues.

She said: “I met my husband when we were in secondary school. Though we lost contact for years, I met him again while in university where he managed a business centre. I was in another relationship then, but when my father was against it, I gave my husband another chance.”

The respondent said they got married in Cotonou after several meetings.

“My husband collects money from people on the pretext of issuing them visa but he never did. There was a time he did the same for a police officer. When the harassment was too much, he ran away to Cotonou for a year,” she said.

She further said her husband smokes marijuana and visits Afrika Shrine often, adding that he always beat her when she seized his money and weed to prevent him from going out.

“There was a day he was arrested at an uncompleted building, smoking marijuana, by a vigilance group. I was embarrassed,” she said.

The mother of three described her husband as stubborn, saying: “There was a time my husband was advised not to drive himself but he didn’t listen. The day we went out together, he hit a woman, but in an attempt to run away, we were caught. They wanted to beat him but because of the love I have for him, I told them I drove and that was how I saw myself in the police station.

“My so-called husband never visited me in detention until some people brought a report, which said the woman was alive; that was when my husband came to bail me.”

Mrs Dosu said the reason she left the house last year was because her husband tried to sleep with her with juju.

She said: “He wanted to travel that morning and we decided to make love. The play was intimate until suddenly his manhood became soft. I jokingly asked if his girlfriends put something on it but he didn’t answer. As I used my hand to make his manhood erect again, I realised it was oily.

‘’He claimed he had boil on it but I was shocked when he opened his wardrobe and showed me a horn where he kept the oil. As I speak, I keep wondering what his intention was. I left with our children that day on the pretext of visiting a friend.”

The court’s President, Chief Awos Awosola, adjourned the matter till August 31.

  • Jonathan, wife storm Kenya games reserves

Jonathan, wife storm Kenya games reserves

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan at the weekend stormed Kenya’s Maasai Mara Games Reserve in two chartered planes.

One of the planes carried Kenya State security and the second was occupied by Jonathan, his wife Patience and two of their children.

He is at the reserve for a three-day tour to witness the wildebeest migration.

Jonathan was booked at the new Angama Mara Lodge at the Oloololo conservancy.

The ex-president was received by Narok Governor Samuel Tunai.

Tunai, who is also the Council of Governors tourism committee chairman, said more than 500,000 tourists from all over the world are expected to witness the spectacular crossing of wildebeest across the crocodile-infested Mara River.

Jonathan, who refused to speak with reporters on his arrival to the reserve, according to Kenya media, is the second dignitary to visit the reserve in less than a fortnight after the King of Swasiland, Mswati III. The king was booked in the same lodge six days ago.

The owner of the hotel, Nicky Fitzgerald, said this tourism peak season is different from the past as prominent personalities from across the world have been calling for bookings.

“We have received Mr Jonathan, King Mswati III, a Chinese prominent family and we are expecting other royalties,” said Ms Fitzgerald.

Ms Fitzgerald said United States (U.S.) President Barrack Obama’s visit last month was a boost for tourism in Kenya.

The trooping in of world leaders to Kenya is expected to boost the tourism sector, which is recovering from travel advisories.

Britain has withdrawn travel advisories against Kenya and America is expected to follow suit. “Starting of direct flights between Kenya and the U.S. as Obama promised would really promote trade and tourism,” said Ms Fitzgerald.

He looked at the two of us and that was it. It was very painful and difficult for me to bear,” he added.

  • Buhari’s wife tasks Nigerian women on unity

Buhari’s wife tasks Nigerian women on unity

•Okorocha seeks more roles for women

The wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, yesterday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, enjoined Nigerian women to be united for developmental goals.

Aisha, who was represented at the grand finale of this year’s August Meeting at the Ojukwu Square by the wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osibanjo, harped on the need for the women to arise and speak with one strong and united voice.

She noted that the greatest challenge facing the womenfolk is the inability to come and reason together to chart a common course for the emancipation of women.

She, however, expressed optimism that with the gathering of women under the auspices of the August meeting, as observed in the state, “it will only be a matter of time for the women to take their rightful place in the country”.

According to Dolapo, “Wife of the President asked me to tell you that she appreciates Imo women and to remind them of the theme of this years’ August meeting, ‘Dare to Dream’.

She said that when you dream, Nigeria will never be the same again. If women arise, there would be unity in the country”.

The President’s wife also encouraged the women to strive and bring up their children in the knowledge of unity and truth, adding that, “I tell you when you do that, Imo will be great again, Nigeria will be great again”.

Earlier in her speech, the host and Imo State First Lady, Nneoma Rochas Okorocha , stated that women in the state are deeply rooted in the change propagated by the All Progressives’ Congress (APC).

The state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, in his speech, urged highly placed Nigerians in authority to give women a chance to prove their worth in rendering assistance to leadership in the country.

Dignitaries at the event include the first ladies of Edo, Nasarawa, Enugu, Zamfara, Ebonyi and Abia states.

  • Dickson’s wife, sister dragged to court for trespass, intimidation

The First Lady, Bayelsa State, Dr. Rachel Dickson, her sister, Madam Tari Konyefa and an architect, Mr. Raymond Favour, have been dragged to the state High Court for allegedly trespassing on a parcel of land belonging to one Anthony Ibomoghe, a.k.a Tony Ezekiel.

Ezekiel, a businessman, who hails from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, in a suit, dated May 21, said his parcel of land, which formed part of the Okunukuo Bush, Yenizue-Gene Epie, had been taken over by the trio.

He described Konyefa as an agent and trustee of Mrs. Dickson’s expansive multi-storey building undergoing construction and near completion at the Erepa Road, Yenizue-Gene.

Ezekiel, in a copy of the suit obtained by The Nation, said the defendants dumped a container made of steel on his five-bedroom duplex undergoing construction, which he said has already cost him about N40million.

He said the way and manner the container was dumped on the land impacted negatively on the foundation of his building and stopped him from continuing further work on the structure.

Irked by the development, he said he lodged a complaint with the Commissioner of Police in Yenagoa, adding that the matter was still receiving consideration by the police.

Ezekiel said he further sent a letter to the defendants, who instead of complying with his requests, replied him through their lawyer, denying any connection with the actions complained of, including owning any plots of land near his land.

“The acts of the defendants have greatly injured my proprietary rights and exercise of same over the aforesaid plots of land forcefully denied me because all the defendants are connected with the Governor of Bayelsa State.

“The defendants enjoy unimpeded access to all the police paraphernalia in Bayelsa State and have all instruments of intimidation at their disposal. They have dared me to take further steps in connection with developing the land in dispute issuing all manner of threats to me, an ordinary helpless Nigerian citizen,” he said.

He asked the court to make a declaration that the dumping of a container steel structure on his land by the defendants  is unlawful and amounts to trespass.

He also sought an order of mandatory injunction compelling the defendants to remove forthwith the container.

Ezekiel further asked the court to make an order directing an inquiry into the damages he incurred following the actions of the defendants and an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from disturbing his rights to the land.

It was gathered that the court fixed October 5th for hearing on the matter after serving writs of summon on the defendants.

  • Probe Jonathan, wife, APC chief urges Buhari

Probe Jonathan, wife, APC chief urges Buhari

A kinsman of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Perekeme Kpodo, yesterday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prosecute his predecessor and his wife, Dame Patience.

Kpodo, who addressed reporters in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, said the former President, his wife and allies should be tried for alleged financial misdeeds.

The Bayelsa indigene declared himself a factional Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He faulted the defection of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members to APC.

According to him, the acceptance of the defectors to the APC by the Tiwei Orunimighe-led executive committee was illegal.

Kpodo said those rushing into the APC aimed to escape prosecution by the Buhari administration.

The APC chieftain described most of the defectors as corrupt politicians who should face the law.

He urged President Buhari not to be discouraged by pressure from those whipping up sentiments to protect Jonathan and his wife.

Kpodo said the APC stance against corrupt associates of the last administration of Jonathan was well known.

He said: “As a decent state executive, we consider the attempt to make the APC a dumping ground unacceptable and vexatious. APC in the state will not allow itself to become a dumping ground for desperate looters and thieves in need of protection from prosecution.

“We call on President Buhari to order a detailed investigation into the acts of fraud and embezzlement by these defectors and their associates.

“We support the moves by President Buhari for the prosecution of former President Jonathan, his wife, Patience Jonathan, and his known associates for the looting and associated crimes committed against the state.”

Kpodo advised APC’s aspiring defectors to get clearance at the ward and state levels.

The APC chieftain said defectors to the party must show clear records of performance from their parent party or parties before official presentation to the loyalists and progressive supporters of the party.

He said the APC would soon release the timetable to receive its supporters, defectors and the processes for its primaries.

  • I still love my wife, says Emeka Ike

I still love my wife, says Emeka Ike

•’I’m no longer interested in him’

Ace Actor Emeka Ike yesterday prayed the Lagos Island Customary Court not to dissolved his marriage, saying he still loves his wife, Emma.

Emma had gone to court, seeking dissolution of their 12-year-old marriage.

Emeka, represented by his counsel, Abdul’Hakeem Labi-Lawal, said his client has not appeared in court because he is ill.

“My client is ill but I will try my best possible he comes on the next adjourned date. We indulge the court to give us six months from this day to see if there is possibility of settlement between the couple,” he said.

But Mrs Ike said six months was too long adding that the respondent had two years to reconcile with her but he didn’t.

She said: “The last time I wanted to speak with our children, it was my mother-in-law who

picked the call and asked if I had read Exodus 21 which says that if I go, I shouldn’t return.”

The court’s President, Chief Awos Awosola, said the court could only grant two weeks.

He said: “I am expecting Emeka Ike in this court if he really wants settlement.”

Awosola adjourned the matter till August 12 for further hearing.

After the court rose, Mrs Ike told The Nation that she wasn’t ready to return to her husband. “Over two years since I left the house, he never taught of reconciliation. He had every opportunity to ask me to return but he didn’t. So why now?”she asked.

Mrs Ike said her husband took her last two children from her when she was going for her mother’s burial in February.

“He promised to bring them to me immediately I returned from my mother’s burial but he didn’t. Even when he didn’t allow me access to see our children, I spoke with them on several occasions but now, he doesn’t allow me anymore. My children are now against me, she said.

Mrs Ike said she left her matrimonial home because she could no longer bear being tortured anymore.

“If I was still with him, I may not survive. I was 19-year old when I met him and he was the one who deflowered me. I see no reason I shouldn’t be treated with utmost respect.

“Due to physical torture, my health has been affected. There was even a time I thought I had breast cancer because I felt a lump on one part of my breast.” Mrs Ike said.

She said things became worse last Sunday when she called her husband to speak with their children.

In tears, Mrs Ike said:”I almost went mad when my first son told me on phone that if I truly loved them, I wouldn’t have abandoned them. Even my seven-year-old son whose day wouldn’t be complete without seeing me said he doesn’t love me. I love my children. I miss my children. I never abandoned them. I am in pain. They don’t have any other mother. I really need my children. I am a good woman; I endured so many things as his wife.”

The union produced four children between ages 4 and 13.

Also speaking, the FCT Chairman of the society, Alhaji Yusuf Adebayo, informed the audience that the National Universities Commission had granted the association licence to establish the Summit University.

“The licence is part of the fulfilment of our objective  which is to promote education among Muslim youths.’’

He urged Muslims to continue to maintain the spirit of Ramadan and lessons learnt from it as stated in the Holy Quran.
