Wike faults Fubara over termination of 10,000 jobs for Rivers youths

…as Nwuche, others back Tinubu’s second term bid

Following the continuation of his visit to the Local Government Area of Rivers State, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, alleged that the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, cancelled an employment procedure put in place by his administration to employ 10, 000 youths.

Wike said his successor (Fubara), upon resumption, cancelled what could have helped the youths of the state.

He spoke at Ahoada main Town, during the Renewed Hope Family’s ‘Thank you visit’ to Ahoada East Local Government Area.

Wike, who described Fubara as a ‘bad child’, knocked him for taking glory on projects he started in the Ahoada and Emohua areas.

He faulted the governor for claiming the construction of the Ahoada-Omoku and Emohua-Kalabari Road, which he said he had made 70% payment before handing over.

Wike said, “When I decided to dualize this Ahoada road, people thought it was impossible. But by the grace of God, today, Ahoada East, Ahoada Town, is coming back to be the city it is supposed to be. I finished phase one of this dualization.

“Then I flagged off phase two, which would end up in Omoku. The job was given the same day as Emohua’s job in the Kalabari area. I gave it to Julius Berger, and we signed an agreement for Julius Berger to collect N4 billion every month from our IGR. The total amount of that road, and the one from Emohua to the Kalabari area, was about N80 billion. So, I said, if they collect four billion every month, that would give them 48 billion. That in two years’ time, they would have completed.

“Today, I hear people are making noise. They even forgot who laid the foundation. On that road, I gave it to Setraco. I paid about 70%. I remember that day, they gave me 100 plots of land. I said, thank you, I don’t need land there. What is continuity?

“I employed Rivers State youths, 10,000. The person we handed over power to, instead of allowing the 10,000 youths, he cancelled that job. 10,000 youths. A bad child is a bad child.”

Wike recalled that when he was the governor, Rivers was the envy of other states of the federation, bemoaning that Fubara failed to continue with his legacies.

The minister said, “I handed over, see where I stopped. Please, make sure you continue with this programme that will make our state one of the respected states in this country. When I was here, you know, Nigeria used to respect us. I don’t know what it is today; you will tell me. I didn’t make mistakes; we never made mistakes.”

The Chairman of South South Development Commission (SSDC), and Leader of the Renewed Hope Family in Ahoada, Rt Hon Chibudom Nwuche, applauded Wike for the numerous projects he has attracted to Ahoada and commended him for the sacrifice he made on the instructions to support Bola Tinubu and elect the Rivers State Governor.

He emphasised that Fubara was elected as governor based on instruction.

He added in the same way that the state voted Bola Tinubu as president, promising that Ahoada will always back Tinubu.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives promised that the people would always exhibit their loyalty to Wike.

He disclosed that no governor has ever shown commitment to the development of Ahoada like Wike.

He said politics is local, urging those interfering in Rivers’ politics to steer clear, and concentrate on delivering Tinubu in their respective states.

He said, “Therefore, wherever you go, we shall go there. And may I offer some advice to some interlopers? Politics is local. Go to your states and show your strength. Leave Rivers State alone. Rivers State has its own peculiar politics, which we all understand.

“We are a political family. When a leader chooses one of us, we expect that the person will show gratitude and work with the entire team. When you divide a team, that is not how to show gratitude.

“So please, those who are interfering, mind your business. Go and show your strength in your various states. Go and win your state for the president, if you can.”

The supporters of the minister were seen cheering him and his entourage.

Police: cleric under probe over alleged plan to attack Wike

Port Harcourt–based cleric Tombari Gbeneol, arrested over an alleged plot to assassinate   Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister  Nyesom Wike, is undergoing investigation.

Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, who made this known yesterday, said further information on the matter would be provided after the interrogation.

“He (Gbeneol)   is in our custody. Investigation is ongoing. I would not say more than that. When we are done with the investigation. You will know,”  Hundeyin added.

Gbeneol,  founder of Life Forte Chapel Church in  Port Harcourt, Rivers State,  was arrested, reportedly two weeks ago, by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

Sources said his apprehension followed the interception of a phone conversation between him and the immediate past Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Dr Tammy Danagogo.

In the recorded conversation, said one of the sources,  the suspects, who is also a medical doctor,   discussed a plot to bring in Israeli nationals to eliminate the  FCT Minister.

“The content of the call was considered a grave national security threat. That was what triggered the immediate action by the IRT,” said the source.

Although a security source added that efforts were ongoing to arrest Danagogo, who, in a statement, denied involvement in the plot.

The statement reads in part: “Dr Danagogo categorically denies these allegations. They are baseless, false and fabricated.

“The claims, which are being circulated on certain online platforms, are false, malicious, and deliberately crafted to smear his hard-earned reputation, mislead the public, and drag his name into issues he knows absolutely nothing about.

‘’Throughout his public and private life, he has consistently upheld the rule of law, due process, and the peaceful coexistence of all citizens.

“He,  therefore,  calls on the general public to completely disregard these unfounded and mischievous reports, which exist only in the imagination of their peddlers.

The FCT minister described their nominations as a demonstration of President Tinubu’s true love for the people of Rivers.

According to him, Rivers has never had it this good since the creation of the state.

He said the number of appointments given to Rivers’ sons and daughters under the Tinubu administration is unprecedented.

Wike said: “Just as we are coming, we have two nominations for appointment by President Tinubu – Abe and Kobani.

“This shows that Mr. President keeps his promises and keeps his agreements.

“We are standing by the truth and the truth will set us free.”

The minister urged the people of Rivers State to continue to support President Tinubu, particularly his reelection bid in 2027.

The Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, Mr. Vincent Nemieoboka, described Wike as a “major propeller of development” in the area.

Nemieoboka also thanked the minister for facilitating numerous appointments for the sons and daughters of the land, both at the federal and state levels.

He assured the minister that the people would deliver the local government for him in 2027.

Wike, Basiru clash over Rivers politics

    • Minister: leave state alone
    • Party chief: resign, face politics

A crisis has broken out between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru.

The party chief and the minister are at daggers drawn over allegation of meddlesomeness in the affairs of the ruling party.

The national secretary chided Wike, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for making an uncomplimentary remarks about Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who last month joined the APC.

He also accused Wike of making unfounded allegations on financial gratification.

He went ahead to advise him to quit as minister to face Rivers politics.

Although, Wike remains in PDP as leader of one of the factions. He has repeatedly emphasized his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

Wike has been on a thank you visit to council secretariats in the state where he has made comments about Governor Fubara’s fitness to retain his seat.

He has used the visit to rally support for President Tinubu in what observers see as a popularity test by the minister, who controls all the levers of power in the state.

However, some of his comments he made have drawn the ire of Basiru who took exception to them.

Wike fired back at him and the party chief responded all within hours yesterday.

Basiru, who also attacked National Vice Chairman, South of the APC, Victor Giadom for “disrespecting” Fubara, said in a statement: “I take exception to Wike’s reference to a certain N600 billion largesse in the state for which I and other APC leaders are scrambling. This is nothing but cheap blackmail, which has become his stock-in-trade.

“My background, track record is that of unquestionable integrity, and I challenge him to prove his allegations, or we may meet in court.

“As to his veiled threat against me, let me remind Wike that he is not God and may be overplaying his political card. My faith is in God and will not succumb to cheap threats such as the one from Wike.

“I am one of the young Nigerians that confronted military rule, fighting for democracy, when the likes of Wike were nowhere in sight.”

Basiru said Wike’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not automatically make him a member of the APC.

He stressed: “Millions of non-APC Nigerians also support Mr. President and his own is no different. His attempt to destabilise our party in Rivers State will not be tolerated, and he cannot bring the spirit of PDP into the APC. “

On Giadom, the former Osun Central Senator said: “I find it unfortunate that a member of the NWC was referring to a governor in our party as a ‘so-called governor of Rivers State.’

“The office of the governor is an exalted position, and whoever is occupying it must be respected, irrespective of whatever political differences you have.”

But Basiru said Wike’s reaction to his earlier warning was uncalled for, stressing that he was only carrying out the responsibility of protecting the interests of the APC, its members and structures.

He wondered why a minister, who is not a member of the party, should challenge his person and office.

Basiru said: “For the avoidance of doubt, our records indicate that Minister Nyesom Wike is not a member of our party (APC). So,  he lacks the locus to dabble into the affairs our party.”

He said Wike cannot be in the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of an APC government and at the same time be causing confusion within any organ or structure of the party at any level, using the leverage of that same office.

Basiru added: “As National Secretary of the APC, I am imbued with the responsibility to protect the interests of the party and all its members and structures. Hence, my comments regarding the affairs of the APC in Rivers State cannot be an undue interference in the affairs of Rivers State. As National Secretary, my activities cannot be confined to my home state, Osun State.”

Basiru said Wike should resign and face Rivers politics because he is interested in the resources of the state.

Wike to Basiru: Stay clear of Rivers politics

Wike said the national secretary should “leave Rivers State alone” and be careful about the statements he makes.

He gave the warning during his “thank-you” visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area, where he alleged that some  APC members had received some funds from the N600 billion left in the state’s coffers.

Wike said Rivers is a “no-go area,” urging Basiru  to learn from those who previously tried to meddle in politics and got their hands burnt.

He said: “Let me warn those who come to Rivers State. Because you have heard that we have N600 billion, you come here, you collect, and you open your mouth to talk anyhow.

“I say it here, take this message to your National Secretary. Leave Rivers State alone. Go and ask those who have done it before. Don’t take our support for Mr President for granted. You have to be careful with statements you make.

“Today, you are enjoying in Osun

You don’t know those who did the work. You are opening your mouth to talk about Rivers State. Anything you see, take it.

“Go and ask other people what had happened to them before. If your hand burns, no be me burn am o. This state is a no-go area. Take the one you have taken, stop making unnecessary comments.”

The Renewed Hope Ambassador for Rivers State,  Desmond Akawor, said development had been stalled in the local government since the inauguration of Fubara as governor

He said the area must get its fair share of the N600 billion left in the state’s account.

Akawor said: “We elected Governor Siminalayi Fubara with the expectation that Oyigbo would benefit meaningfully from development.

“Your Excellency, development in Oyigbo has stalled. We have not moved an inch forward. The only tangible benefit Oyigbo has received is a commissioner’s slot, which was given to me. Beyond that, nothing substantial has come to our people.

“There is talk about N600 billion. Let us be clear: we are not here to argue figures. But Oyigbo people must not be excluded. If N40 billion was allocated across groups, Oyigbo must not be shortchanged. We are not asking for favours; we are asking for fairness.”

Akawor said things would get better in 2027 after the legitimate change of government in Rivers.

The Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Council, Okechukwu Agara, expressed his gratitude to the minister for what he had done for the area.

Also, Felix Nweke, who represents Tai, Oyigbo and Eleme Federal Constituency, assured Wike that the council will continue to support him.

He said the development in that area had stagnated since Wike left office as governor in 2023.

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Ajibola Bashiru has said that his comments on the status of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State was in order.

Clarifying the status of the Governor, who recently defected to APC, the Secretary said that all members of the party, including members of the National Working Committee (NWC) must accord any sitting Governor due respect and  Governors remain the leaders of the party in their States.

But Bashiru’s comment did not go down well with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who warned the APC Secretary to stay clear of Rivers politics.

Reacting to the development in a statement, APC National Secretary said the Minister’s reaction was uncalled for as he (Bashiru) was only carrying out his responsibility of protecting the interests of the Party, all its members and structures.

…says they should stay off Rivers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, to steer clear of political affairs in Rivers State.

Wike’s warning followed comments attributed to Basiru, who had cautioned the APC National Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom, against what he described as disrespect towards Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, allegedly to curry favour with Wike.

Basiru’s remarks came after the minister’s recent “thank you” visit to Gokana Local Government Area.

Reacting while addressing residents of Oyigbo Local Government Area, Wike advised Basiru and other politicians to desist from actions capable of igniting tension in the state.

He stated that both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were now working towards a common objective of ensuring the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

The minister also expressed displeasure over what he described as attempts by politicians to position themselves to benefit from the N600 billion Rivers fund, warning against politicising resources meant for the development of the state.
