  • Thugs attack Osinbajo’s convoy in Ilorin

Political thugs suspected to have sympathies for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday allegedly attacked the convoy of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The attack is said to have culminated in life-threatening gunshots, which left at least two supporters of the APC injured.

Many others allegedly got seriously injured while running for their lives.

But a police source revealed the incident, which happened around Isale-Koko, Ilorin suburb, occurred when the Vice President’s convoy had left the area.

When contacted, spokesperson of the state police command Ajayi Okasanmi could not confirm the incident.

Reacting on the development APC governorship candidate in the state Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq condemned “the brazen attack today in Ilorin on the convoy of the Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo by armed PDP thugs.”

In a statement by his media aide, Rafiu Ajakaye, Abdulrazaq said: “The vice president was at Isale Aluko suburb of Ilorin on a door-to-door campaign when some dare-devil gunmen opened fire at his convoy which included thousands of APC members and supporters.

“In what is a reminiscence of the Offa robbery, this attack is the height of recklessness on the part of these street urchins who have long been empowered and armed by the discredited dynasty to terrorise our community and anyone who has contrary views to their amala politics.

“Coming just a day after two of our supporters were killed in Ojoku in the convoy of our senatorial candidate Architect Lola Ashiru, this is becoming too much and the madness must stop.

“Going into an election with these thugs clearly on the loose is an existential threat not just to all of us challenging the misrule in our state but to the entire people of the state and their properties.

“We call for immediate arrest and prosecution of these thugs. We also demand investigations to reveal those who gave the orders for these deadly attacks.

“We call for all measures to be taken to ensure safety of lives and properties and sanctity of the ballot box in Kwara and beyond.

“No one’s political interest should be at the expense of human lives and their properties.

“We insist that a political contest is a contest of ideas and no one must be allowed to cow or kill others in the process.”

  • Propaganda against Buhari absurd, untrue- Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has described as absurd, the lies, propaganda and accusations against President Muhammadu Buhari.

Osinbajo said on Wednesday night while responding to questions at an Interactive Session and Engagement held at Muson Centre, Lagos on Wednesday night.

The interactive session tagged: “Unveiling The Truth”, organised by young Christian group, had some Christian leaders in attendance.

Participants used the occasion to ask plenty of questions bothering on insecurity, economy, blaming of past administrations, social welfare for the unemployed, corruption, and timing of TraderMoni.

Other questions bothered on Next Level slogan, farmer/herders crisis, lopsided federal appointments, Islamisation, Buhari’s commitment to addressing critical issues in the country among others.

Responding, Osinbajo said that President Buhari was committed to addressing the problems facing the country such as security, economy and fixing critical infrastructure and fair treatment of all sections.

He said Buhari is addressing farmer/herders crises and has no intention at all to Islamise the country.

“President Muhammadu is possibly one of the most committed people I have ever met. He is committed to seeing that resources of this country are used for this country.

“In general terms, we find that there is fairness in the distribution of appointments. Many of the accusations against Buhari are not true.

“Sometimes, people listen to propaganda and if we look at the facts, things are totally different. On Islamisation, first of all, it is untrue, it is propaganda.

“Anybody who complains that President Buhari is propagating Islamic agenda, how is that possible?

“A lot of these are just propaganda. Never listen to these. Many of these are absurd, they are deliberate propaganda. They come from the same source. Don’t believe them. Let’s be fair,” Osinbajo said.

The vice president, who urged Nigerians not to fear or doubt the good intention of the President, advised Nigerians to stop spreading rumours about things that never happened.

Osinbajo noted that the major cause of farmer/herder crisis remains pasture and water which the government has made concerted efforts to address.

On accusations of lopsided federal appointments, Osinbajo said that the Southeast with five states has five ministers more than some regions with higher number of states.

On TraderMoni, he said that the National Assembly does not need to approve money for it as it is a programme of the Bank of Industry meant to lift many Nigerians out of poverty.

On the timing of implementation of the National Social Investment Programme, Osinbajo said it kicked off after the budgetary allocation was passed by the National Assembly in 2016.

According to him, the party never promised N5,000 monthly stipends for the unemployed but for the vulnerable which is ongoing.

He said the NSIP has engaged so many youths in its N-Power programme and government has the plan to increase the number to 1.5 million young Nigerians in the Next Level out of 1.7 million people churned out of tertiary institutions every year.

On criminality, the vice president said that the way forward is local policing and intelligence as well as immediate arrest and prosecution of criminals in the country.

On security, he said that the country has made significant progress and moved forward from what the situation was before the 2015 general elections.

The vice president said that the APC Next Level slogan centres on job creation, power, making credit more available to entrepreneurs, agriculture, infrastructure and others.

The vice president urged Christian leaders to jettison thinking about any Islamic agenda and Islamisation, saying many Christians are in the cabinet of President Buhari.

He said that the media should desist from spreading rumours, decrying fake news about Buhari being another person from Sudan.

Addressing the accusation that the present administration often blames previous administrations, Osinbajo said that the country can not move forward without considering the past.

According to him, corruption remains the bane of national growth and development. He said most of the woes confronting Nigerians were caused by wastefulness of past governments.

The highlight of the interaction were high praise led by choir and power-packed prayer for the country and general elections led by Bishop Wale Oke.

The participants prayed for God’s mercies on the country and God’s protection on the vice president especially from the recent helicopter crash.

  • Osinbajo launches AfDB-funded $258m northeast recovery intervention

The African Development Bank and the Federal Government have launched the Inclusive Basic Service Delivery Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Programme – a $258million comprehensive multisectoral intervention aimed at bolstering rehabilitation efforts in north-eastern Nigeria.

According to a statement by the AfDB, Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo launched the program at the bank’s premises in Abuja. The launch was attended by Governors of five northeast states, ministers, development partners and key stakeholders.

The statement quoted Osinbajo saying that: “It has been gratifying to note how enthusiastically our friends and partners have rallied to our support, mobilizing resources to tackle the crisis in the northeast.

“We would like to express the profound appreciation of the Federal Government to the Bank for being a partner in progress with us.

“When the story of the region’s recovery is told, the work of the African Development Bank will occupy a well-merited and prominent chapter,” Osibanjo said, lauding the program as a landmark intervention in support of the region, which has suffered devastation from insurgency.

The AfDB has stated clearly that state governments of the northeast will implement the Bank’s $258million programme with the Federal Government’s support.

In terms of impact, 14 million affected people including 2.3 million internal displaced persons (IDPs) will benefit from health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation services.

The Programme is targeting 9,000 IDPs and heads of vulnerable households who will receive direct economic assistance, while 2,023 small and medium scale enterprises (79% women) will receive business development support. About 2,900 construction artisans and mechanics in the informal sector will also get help to improve their productivity. The initiative envisages that 2,000 unskilled youth will be trained for employment.

The President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina represented by the Bank’s Senior Director in Nigeria, Ebrima Faal, highlighted the programme’s emphasis on inclusivity.

“It incorporates special gender considerations by ensuring that women are active participants in all stages of the project and providing training for women and youth entrepreneurs to increase their chances for employment and business opportunities,” Adesina said.

“The Bank has remained a strong partner of the Federal and State Governments in their efforts to restore livelihoods in the northeast. For instance, throughout the period of heightened conflict in the region, the Bank intervened with two critical programmes in Yobe and Taraba States. The experience gained and lessons learned from implementing these two projects are incorporated in the design of the current intervention,” he added.

Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar thanked the Bank for putting together what he described as the first integrated and inclusive plan for rebuilding of northeast Nigeria.

“Part of the underlying factors that led to the crazy phenomenon of Boko Haram is illiteracy and lack of economic capacity. For the first time, we have now a program that attempts to address all these issues at once,” he said.

The intervention seeks to reduce fragility aggravated by the Boko Haram insurgency by contributing to emergency transition, recovery and peacebuilding efforts. It focuses on three main components – service delivery, economic recovery and institutional strengthening. It also includes support to ensure increased access of the poor and vulnerable to basic social services in water, sanitation, hygiene, health and education, as well as livelihood opportunities, food security and strengthened safety net systems.

Participating states include Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and Taraba states.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on the North-East Initiative, Theophilus Danjuma noted that given the growing traffic of displaced persons back to their home communities, the provision of essential services and job creation in safe locations will play a huge role in ensuring the sustainability of the post-crisis recovery.

  • Buhari, Osinbajo, others smuggled out as hoodlums attack APC rally

The Presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, ended abruptly as scores of hoodlums chanting the slogan of a rival political party and its governorship candidate, who had seized the main bowl of the stadium, pelted dignitaries, including President Muhammadu Buhari, with stones but the President’s security aides shielded him from being hurt.

President who arrived the stadium around 3 pm in company of the Vice – President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, the National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Chief Segun Osoba, the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, hurriedly raised the hand of Abiodun shortly after he had addressed the rally briefly and was whisked out of the stadium immediately.

Trouble began when Oshiomhole took the micro phone and announced that they were in the state for the presidential campaign and to also give Dapo Abiodun the emblem of the party as the governorship candidate, a pronouncement which the assembled hoodlums were waiting to commence another round of hurl stones and other objects at the APC leaders and dignitaries.

There was chaos and apprehension everywhere as people scampered for safety while the daring hoodlums held people in terror, and refused to be calmed when Governor Ibikunle Amosun, pleaded with them not to “disgrace” him.

Earlier before the arrival of Buhari and others scores of the hoodlums who had continued sing the slogan of a rival opposition governorship candidate and his party sacked supporters of the Prince Dapo Abiodun, the governorship candidate of APC, from the stadium.

Other APC members and supporters seated and awaiting the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari were also chased away as the thugs’ hurled stones, shoes and other dangerous weapons at them.

Many were injured in the sustained attacks, forcing thousands of people to leave the stadium while the President was yet to arrive.

The attacks began few minutes to 1:0’clock and peaked about an 45 minutes later and within 10 minutes, all the seats and positions occupied by Dapo Abiodun supporters and others APC members were deserted as stones and objects hurled by the hoodlums, fell on them in torrents.

Some of the hoodlums were overheard brazenly boasting; ”this is Ogun and nobody can intimidate us” even as they kept throwing stones at the fleeing APC members and supporters of Abiodun.

It was a pathetic sight watching elderly men and women supporters labouring to scale the stadium fence in desperate bids to escape the multi – pronged attacks, many alleged was sponsored by Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Outside the stadium gunshots rang out repeatedly, as dozens of armed soldiers and other security agencies battled to prevent the entry of another batch of hoodlums, who were allegedly hurried to the venue to reinforce their colleagues who had seized the main bowl of the main stadium.

Many were appalled that the Fuji musician called to entertain at the occasion, prodded the hoodlums on with inciting lyrics while security agents within the stadium and who ought to ensure orderliness at the venue, acted as though they were on holiday.

There was palpable concern over the safety of the APC chieftains such as Senator Gbenga Kaka, Abiodun’s running mate, Noimot Oyedele – Salako, Chief Tolu Odebiyi and others, with many wondering if they were able to leave the stadium unscathed.

Senator Gbenga Kaka accused the security agencies of not being professional in the discharge of their duties, saying they looked the other way while their people were under heavy attack by political thugs.

  • ‘With 10m PVCs, persons with disabilities will determine Nigeria’s President’

Barely five days to the country’s presidential election, the Chairman, Board of Trustees and founder, Joint National Association of Persons with Disability (JONAPWD), Prince Paul Adelabu has vowed that all the 10 million registered votes of the members of the association will be used to actualise the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The vow is coming on the heels of the endorsement for the presidential candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC) by 54 different support groups from the Southwest states.

Adelabu, a former Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on people with disability said the President Buhari singular act of signing into law the disability bill that would add value to the life of people with disability is enough reason to work for his re-election.

The support groups, represented by their various zonal leaders and coordinators from the Southwest region made the endorsement of President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at an event well attended by delegates at Mapo Hall, Ibadan on Monday.

According to Adelabu, every effort to make sure that the PDP led government signed the disability bill into law in the last 16 years of the nation’s political history was futile as a result of what he described as “show of unconcern and lack of care” for people living with disability in different parts of the country.

While noting that  27 million people with disabilities regarded Buhari as a father who is concerned about their plight, the Association said the 10million people with disabilities will determine the next president of the country.

He said, “Our votes will determine the presidency of the country. There are 27 million people with disabilities. Ten million of us have PVCs. We are going to vote for Buhari. Ten million votes from us is for President Buhari.

“On the 23rd of last month he signed our bill. We’ll be celebrating Buhari on this day. Olusegun Obadanjo, Musa Yar’adua and Goodluck Jonathan did not sign the bill. Any government that is concerned with the plight of disabled people is better to vote. For the sake of the poor and disabled, vote massively for Buhari.”

In a remark, the Southwest Director General, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Mr Olusola Oke urged the Yoruba’s to vote massively for the APC.

Calling on Yoruba sons and daughters to vote for Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Oke said the party gave the region the vice presidential slot, stressing that for the region to retain that slot, it must vote for APC massively.

Oke added that aside from pursuing Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s philosophy, the Buhari-led government had made giant strides in the areas of infrastructural development such as railway, roads, power supply and job creation.

He charged the 54 support groups present at the event to go back to their units to mobilize for Buhari and Osinbajo, saying the region had got a diligent, dedicated and honest man in the administration in person of Osinbajo.

“We want him to be there for the next four years. Buhari relies on the support groups. Don’t disappoint him. We have every reason to support Buhari. The Yorubas are taking the front seat in this administration and we want to retain them.

“We don’t want the prime position of Vice President go to another region. We must use our votes to retain it. The Yorubas are ready to move to the next level.”

In their separate remarks, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state and the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole urged the Southwest not to allow the VP slot go to other region, assuring that with more votes to ensure Buhari’s re-election, the region will get more.

  • Corrupt politicians will continue to go to jail-Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday reiterated his commitment to the anti-graft battle, saying that corrupt politicians will go to jail.

He also promised to fulfill his campaign promises, if re-elected in next Saturday’s election, urging Lagosians to vote for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates “from top to bottom.”

President Buhari and other party leaders, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN); Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode; National Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Presidential Campaign Council Co-chairman Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Campaign Director Rotimi Amaechi and Minister of Power, Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola spoke on the achievements of the APC-led government in the last three and half years at a rally held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The president, who stormed the venue around 2.45noon, was excited at the crowd that had waited for him from sunrise.

For him, the visit to the stadium was historic. He and other party leaders were seized by nostalgic feelings.

Four years ago, President Buhari had defeated former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the APC presidential primary held at the venue.

It was a carnival-like rally. Security was tight. Party supporters outside the stadium were more that those inside the main bowl.

Thrilling the crowd were ace musicians-Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, Lady Queen and ‘Small Doctor.’

Party faithful, who came from the 57 councils, mixed with other party supporters and followers-representatives of the entertainment industry, Community Development Associations (CDAs), women groups, youth associations and students.

President Buhari was accompanied by Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje; Kebbi State Governor Bangudu; Nasarawa State Deputy Governor; Minister of Labour and Employment Dr. Chris Ngige and members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC).

At the venue were Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Idiat Adebule; Nigeria’s Ambassador to United States Justice Oguntade; APC Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande; Afenifere chieftains led by Prince Tajudeen Olusi; Southwest Governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo); Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Gboyega Oyetola (Osun) and Godwin Obaseki (Edo).

There were also APC National Deputy Chairman (South) and former Ekiti State Governor Adeniyi Adebayo; National Auditor Chief George Moghalu; National Treasurer Adamu Fanda; National Welfare Secretary Ibrahim Masari; Legal Adviser Babatunde Ogala; Vice Chairman (Southwest) Pastor Bankola Oluwajana; Vice Chairman (Northeast) Emma Enukwu; Vice Chairman (Southsouth Ntifam Ita and National Youth Leader Sadiq Abubakar.

Other chieftains include former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola; Lagos State APC Chairman Tunde Balogun and former Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda.

The highlights of the campaign was the handing of party flags by Oshiomhole to the Lagos State governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; Lagos Central senatorial candidate Senator Oluremi Tinubu; her Lagos West and East counterparts-Senator Solomon Adeola and Sikiru Osinnowo and House of Representatives flag bearers who were represented by the Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (Surulere Constituency).

Thanking Lagosians for their patience and commitment, the President said: “I thank you very much for defying the weather to be with us. I don’t think there is much to add to what the Minister of Works and Housing, the Minister of Transport and the vice-president has said.

“I thank you very much and I can assure you that the promise we have made in 2015 to those who elected us, we have fulfilled.

“We have made enormous progress in reviving the economy, on security and fighting corruption. I assure you that we will collect what they have stolen and send them to prison. This is our duty. This is our responsibility and I assure you that we are going to do it.”

Osinbajo, who spoke in Yoruba, said President will provide three things, if re-elected.

These, he said, are jobs, electricity and infrastructure, including roads and railway.

He thanked the President for making ‘June 12’ Democracy day and a holiday in commemoration of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential polls and the injustice of annulment.

He added: “All these are easy, if we vote for Buhari. They don’t want Buhari to remain in office because he is opposed to corruption.

“Buhari made June 12 Democracy Day. When he was minister, three of the four refineries were built. The longest pipeline routes were constructed. He has built roads and he is doing railway. On February 16, use your index fingers to vote for Buhari.”

Tinubu, who described the rally as a celebration of democracy, told the President and party elders that Lagosians will vote for APC because they suffered for 16 years under the PDP administration.

He said: “Lagos is sure, very sure about voting for APC under the broom revolution.

“The party chairman, Balogun, has catalogued Buhari’s achievements. Buhari did not make empty promises. You could see action.”

Tracing the history of Lagos from 1999, the former governor said the people had struck a deal with the progressives, adding that they cannot endorse the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that has not catered for their interest.

He flayed former President Olusegunn Obasanjo and his deputy, Atiku, for serving as clogs in the wheels of Lagos progress, stressing the former vice president is unworthy of Lagos votes.

Tinubu said: “We have had progressive governments in Lagos since 1999. We have provided education and quality health.

“We were the first to pay WAEC fees of students. We catered for poor women and widows. I handed over to Babatunde Fashola.

“I asked him a question: what will happen, if you are elected governor? He said: ‘Lagos will not spoil.’

“Obasanjo then came. We thought there was no way for a revolutionary economy without the Independent Power Project (IPP). I introduced IPP.

“He and Atiku opposed it. I went to court. My lawyer was Osinbajo. I won and we started generating 300 megawatts.

“If they had allowed IPP, Dunlop, Michelin would not have moved out of Nigeria.

“Look at our roads and the traffic density. Obi (Peter) said he will create jobs. But, he has not been able to make brake pads and wheel spanners for the vehicles.

“He said we should go and extend our port in Benin Republic. I call that container economy; Obi China.”
