Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state has described as “shocking” the wanton looting and destruction of properties in his state during the #EndBadGovernance protest on August 1.

He spoke at the state judiciary complex, which was also vandalised by hoodlums who hijacked the supposed peaceful demonstration.

He has been moving round to see the scenes of destruction and assess levels of damage in the state, which was worst hit by the protest riots, according to the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Yusuf visited the judiciary complex on Tuesday, August 13, and was conducted round the property by the Chief Registrar of the Kano State High Court, Abdullahi Bayero, and other members of the judiciary.

Among the things vandalised and destroyed were vehicles parked at the premises.

“The wanton damage on the property and other valuables was shocking to see, and it severely impacts the ability of the courts to efficiently dispense justice,” Governor Yusuf tweeted on his official X handle.

The governor, however, promised to renovate and uplift the status of the judiciary complex to a more befitting condition.

“We shall not let the ruins of this unfortunate episode last longer,” he said and commended members of the Kano state judiciary for their “courage and dedication to the preservation of rule of law and justice.”

Earlier, the governor held an interactive session in Government House with traders under the aegis of the Kano Traders’ Association, to address various pressing concerns such as security, the economy, and social amenities.

During the meeting, the governor urged the traders to cooperate with the government in maintaining social amenities and ensuring appropriate refuse disposal in the state.

He condoled with the people over the destruction of properties by hoodlums and praised the traders for their proactive support in protecting their markets, which he said, saved the state from further damage.

“This proactiveness underscores the need for community policing and cooperation to address security issues in the state.

“I am pleased that normalcy is gradually being restored in Kano, as I hope that with the support demonstrated by our good people, this phase will be over and we shall forge ahead in our efforts to ensure that we provide a fair environment for all to prosper,” Yusuf, who has also relaxed the curfew he had imposed on the state to stop the escalation of violence, said.

Yusuf launches payment of N5 billion gratuity, death benefits

Kano Governor Abba Yusuf has inaugurated the second phase payment of N5 billion gratuity and death benefits to beneficiaries from the period of 2016 to 2019.

In the first phase, the Governor disbursed N6 billion to settle the retirement gratuity and death benefits of 5,333 pensioners, making a total of N11 billion.

During the event at the open theatre of Government House, Kano, Yusuf  presented cheque of N5 billion to the Kano State Pension Fund Trustees.

The Governor also presented symbolic cheques to a few beneficiaries and after pressing a software, over 1,145 pensioners received alerts amounting to N1.9 billion through their mobile apps, officially commencing the payment of the N5 billion gratuity and death benefits.

He said his administration inherited “a pension system that was deliberately broken, chaotic, and confused.”

“Pensioners were not being paid their entitlements, the few ones that were lucky to be paid had to surrender substantial percentage of their benefits before they could get paid the balance of their benefits.

“The system was so corrupted that even the monthly payment was marred with irregular and illegal deductions that no one has any guarantee of how much was their monthly pension –because the deductions where arbitrary and unpredictable,” the Governor said.

According to him, the deductions were done by corrupt officials who feasted on it, as there was no record anywhere showing that the deductions were being remitted to government coffers.

He however, said his administration, soon when it came onboard, was able to promptly stop all illegal deductions that were being made on the monthly pension payments and the emoluments of civil servants.

Yusuf claimed  he inherited a liability of unpaid pension gratuity and death benefits of over N43 billion that the immediate past administration refused to settle.

He promised to continue to offset the N43 billion backlog until it is finished, reminding retirees that it were their rights and not privileges.

He said the pensioners had served Kano State diligently and retired due to age or years of service as provided by the civil service rules, so his administration has deep concern for their welfare.

He expressed dismay and accused the immediate past administration of being brutal to pensioners and retirees, which he said, had caused the deaths of many.

Yusuf said he has set up a committee made up of representatives from Pension Fund Trustees, Sharia Court of Appeal, office of the Head of Civil Service, offices of the Accountant General and Auditor General as well as the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, to ensure the payment is transparently and effectively made to the real beneficiaries.

He added: “We have developed an objective criteria which we believe would not only protect the pensioners but will also ensure transparency and openness in the implementation of the policy.”

  • Islamic scholar accuses Gov Yusuf, Kwankwaso of prioritising politics over governance

Islamic scholar accuses Gov Yusuf, Kwankwaso of prioritising politics over governance

A young Islamic scholar in Kano State, Mallam Isa Ibrahim, has alleged the duo of Governor Abba Yusuf and former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso is not interested in the governance of Kano State but politics.

The cleric claimed that Governor Yusuf is only running errands for Kwankwaso whom he alleged is bent on asserting vengeance on perceived political enemies at the expense of peace and development in Kano State.

Addressing his congregation recently in Tudun Wada, Kano, Mallam Ibrahim, noted that the dangerous politics that Governor Yusuf and his godfather Kwankwaso are playing has brought untold hardship to the state.

He said: “Recently, Kano people were made to watch from the sidelines as other state were celebrating the achievements of their Governors in the last one year. It’s unfortunate that the Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and the power behind the throne, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have chose playing crass politics over provision of good governance,” he lamented.

“Despite the huge monthly allocation the current administration receives from the federal government, there is nothing on ground to show for it. Even the N5 billion palliative released to each state by the federal government to cushion the impact of the removal of the petrol subsidy is not felt by Kano people. Instead Governor Yusuf and his godfather used the resources meant for Kano people to enrich themselves, their cronies, and sponsor attacks on perceived political enemies.

“Even after one year in office, Governor Yusuf is still blaming the past administration for his failures. Whereas, he is the one who has failed to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje. The poor standard of education, health care services, and infrastructural decay in Kano are pointers to that.

“Truth must be told, Governor Yusuf and his godfather Kwankwaso are not interested in the governance of Kano State but politics. Right from the inception of his administration, the governor has always demonstrated that. Immediately after assuming office, without looking at government records, he went ahead with the demolition of shops, businesses and people’s homes simply because most of the properties were developed during the administration of his predecessor, Ganduje.

“After failing in his bid to push the blame for his poor performance to his predecessor with baseless corruption allegations, Governor Yusuf has now resolved to stirring Emirship crisis in the state to distract citizens from his monumental failures as Governor.

“One of the popular sayings of Kano people right now is that Governor Yusuf is an errand boy to Kwankwaso. The Governor himself has proved that by appointing godfather’s children into his administration and taking directives from the former Governor. Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso are leading Kano to hell. They have made life a living hell for Kano people. Should Kano people be made to suffer because Kwankwaso lost the 2023 presidential election to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu? Is Kwankwaso’s political ambition worth the sufferings of millions of Kano citizens? Is governance all about political vendetta or provision of basic social amenities?

“Kano people have suffered enough in the hands of Governor Yusuf and his godfather Kwankwaso. Even their party, the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has passed a vote of no confidence on Governor Yusuf. Governor Yusuf should retrace his steps and do the needful. Governance should be the number one priority or agenda on his table as far as Kano state is concerned. He should also remember that no government lasts forever.”
