Gov Yusuf using Bayero’s removal to cover up non-performance, says group

The Arewa Truth and Justice Iniative has accused Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf of using the removal of Emir Ado Bayero to divert attention from what it described as his monumental failure in office for one year.

Yusuf sparked outrage after signing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Bill into law, abolishing the five emirates in the state and reinstating the former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

In a statement  by its Coordinator, Comrade Momoh Idoko, Arewa Truth and Justice Iniative insisted that the controversial law was all a plot by the Governor to distract Kano people from his failure in office.

Comrade Idoko said Governor Yusuf attempted to insult the intelligence of Kano people by pulling such shenanigan.

He commended Kano people for not falling for the propaganda and also for rejecting the purported removal of the substantive Emir Ado Bayero.

The group urged the Governor to retrace his steps and start carrying out his duties of providing good governance to Kano people rather than relying on shenanigans to cover his failures.

The group said: “The Arewa Truth and Justice Initiative is saddened by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf’s treacherous attempt to undermine the traditional institution in the state in a bid to cover his monumental failure in office as Governor for one year,” the statement said.

“We are not surprised at his woeful performance in Kano State, however, his decision to use the purported removal of Emir Ado Bayero to divert attention from his failure in office is a new low.

“Governor Yusuf started on a wrong foot by going against the very essence of governance which is the people. With just three weeks into his administration, without looking at government records, he went ahead with the demolition of shops, businesses and people’s homes. The Governor neglected his primary duty of providing good governance to the people of Kano, instead choosing to witch-hunt perceived political enemies while the state slips into penury.

“Available data and reports have shown that Kano State is currently one of the worst governed state in Nigeria. A recent assessments of the performances of all the governors sworn in on May 29, 2023, showed that Governor Yusuf of Kano State is rating very poor. The report stated that there’s nothing on ground to show that he is doing anything at all to alleviate the challenges that the people of the state are going through; educationally, developmentally, economically, security and otherwise.

“In a desperate bid to cover his failures on the day of reckoning; his one year in office, Governor Yusuf decided to distract Kano people with the purported abolishment of the five emirates of the state. We commend the people of Kano for not falling for the trick and rejecting the purported removal of the substantive Emir Ado Bayero.

“We urge Governor Yusuf to stop playing games and focus on providing good governance for the people of Kano state. There a need for him to have a rethink and properly define his agenda in the next three years that he is going to spend as the governor of Kano state. Because from all indications it seems he is not well prepared. Kano people deserve better and the Governor must sit up and focus on carrying out his duties rather than embarking on meaningless vendetta and relying on shenanigans to cover his failures.”

Kano Emir crisis: Yusuf, Ribadu meet to restore peace

    • Let rule of law prevail, says NNPP

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf yesterday in Abuja met with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, over the lingering Kano Emir’s stool crisis.

It was learnt that Yusuf’s visit to Ribadu was meant to resolve the crisis and restore peace in the state.

The meeting, which lasted over an hour, was fruitful, according to the governor in a post on his personal X (formerly twitter) handle after leaving the office of the NSA.

He said: “His (Ribadu’s) role is critical for the harmonious existence of our nation. So, I briefed him on the recent developments in Kano.

“I had a fruitful engagement with the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, this afternoon in Abuja.”

Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo had accused Ribadu of alleged complicity in the return of dethroned Emir Aminu Bayero to the state, but has since retracted same and apologised.

A statement by the governor’s Media and Publicity Director Sanusi Bature explained that the discussion between Yusuf and Ribadu in Abuja also touched on that issue.

Bature said: “The meeting (between Yusuf and Ribadu) was prompted by the recent happenings in Kano, following the dissolution of five emirates by the Kano State House of Assembly through the repeal of the State Emirate Law, and the subsequent restoration of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II by the governor.

“The two political leaders deliberated on various matters relating to state and national developments as well as the peaceful coexistence of citizens during their discussions in Abuja.

“It is significant to mention that the NSA had been accused of involvement in the Kano crisis for allowing a substantial military presence to protect the removed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, a position swiftly discredited by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

“Before their meeting today (Thursday), Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo had apologised to the NSA for his implication in the Kano crisis, attributing the error to flawed intelligence.

“Recognising the respected professional background and integrity of the NSA throughout his time as an officer and anti-corruption campaigner, the state deemed it necessary to retract the allegation and offer a sincere apology.

“In harmony with these events, the governor’s meeting with the NSA coincided with Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II’s six-day stay at the Kano palace, where a significant majority of district heads and kingmakers already pledged their allegiance and loyalty to the newly consolidated Kano Emirate under the leadership of the 16th Emir.

Also, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, yesterday appointed Hamisu Sani as the new Ward Head of Kofar Mazugal in Dala Local Government Area of the state.

JUST IN: Restore sacked emirs, Kano South Emirates tell Gov Yusuf

Stakeholders from the abolished three emirates of the Kano South geopolitical district: Gaya, Rano, and Karaye emirate on Wednesday, May 29, asked Governor Abba Yusuf to urgently reinstate their emirs.

In a resolution signed by 103 stakeholders from the three emirates, cutting across all the local government areas that make up Kano South, the emirates called on the state government and House of Assembly to uphold the rule of law and strictly adhere to the directives of the Federal High Court by promptly restoring the five emirates to prevent further escalation of the crisis.

Among the 103 Kano South stakeholders who signed the resolution are: Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Sen. Mas’ud El-Jibrin, Hon. Musa Salihu, Dr. Ali Musa Burun-Burun, Sen. Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, Prof. Shehu Musa, Prof. Andu Salihu Kabiya and Major Gen. AT Jibrin (Rtd) among others.

Addressing a press conference in Kano on Wednesday, Hon. Musa Salisu (spokesman) noted that the three new emirates in Kano South abolished by Governor Yusuf had evolved as separate chiefdoms with rich historical backgrounds, representing a significant portion of the total population of Kano, which is currently projected to be at 15,462,200.

“Before their first restoration and creation, the absence of tertiary healthcare and educational institutions in these emirates had stalled human progress and development.

“Furthermore, the span of administrative control in each of the emirates had hindered their progress due to marginalisation, leading to an over-concentration of social amenities and law enforcement resources in Kano city alone.

“The lack of decentralised development efforts had deprived these emirates of the necessary resources for social and economic growth,” Hon. Salihu said.

The stakeholders noted with dismay that the decision to amend the regressive emirate law by the State Assembly members and hastily assented to by the current Governor Abba Yusuf is a significant setback to the progress and development of the emirates.

“This move not only stripped us of our heritage and potential for growth but also threatened to reverse the positive trajectory that had been set in motion by the previous administration.

“We stand here to shed light on the immense progress and development that the upgrade of the new emirates in southern Kano brought about under the visionary leadership of the former Governor Umar Ganduje.

“This transformative initiative paved the way for urban upgrades and expansion of critical infrastructure in the capital and surrounding areas of the emirates, heralding a new era of prosperity and growth.

“The actions taken by the previous administration, based on extensive consultations and due process, reflect a commitment to the well-being progress of the emirates.

“The sudden removal of our respected emirs without just cause or due process is a grave injustice that must be rectified,” Salihu said.

The Kano South stakeholders appreciated the judiciary and security agencies for their “intervention that has brought a temporary halt to the regressive legislation.”

Kano Emirates: Northern lawyers give Gov Yusuf 48 hours to rescind Sanusi’s reinstatement

A group of lawyers from Northern Nigeria has warned Kano Governor Abba Yusuf to rescind the reinstatement of Emir Muhammad Sanusi II within 48 hours.

At a briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, the lawyers, who identified themselves as the Northern Lawyers’ Forum, claimed that Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement is “unconstitutional” and “contrary to the traditions and customs of the Kano Emirate.”

Barr. Umar Sadiq Abubakar, its Director General argued that Emir Sanusi’s initial removal was in line with the laws and traditions of the emirate, and that his reinstatement would “create chaos and undermine the rule of law” in the state.

Abubakar further accused Abba of making a mockery of the country’s revered judiciary by willfully disobeying a Federal High Court ruling restraining the Governor from reinstating Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

He said Governor Yusuf’s acclaimed injunction from the Kano State High Court, purporting to vacate the subsisting order is a clear affront to the authority of the Federal High Court and a dangerous precedent that undermines the hierarchy of our courts.

The group warned that if the Governor fails to retrace his steps, they would be forced to take “all necessary legal steps” to protect the judiciary and the interests of the people of Kano State.

The statement partly reads: “It has become pertinent to again address you on the Executive rascality and gross disregard of the judiciary by the executive governor of Kano state, H.E Abba K. Yusuf. You will recall that prior to the reinstatement of deposed Muhammad Sanusi ii as Emir of Kano, a Federal High Court granted an order restraining the Governor of Kano state and every other party concerned from reinstating Mohammed Sanusi ii as Emir of Kano, but the executive governor of the state, H.E Abba k. Yusuf, in breach of the court order went ahead to reinstate Mohammed Sanusi ii as Emir of Kano state.

“We know that the judiciary is conservative and therefore look up  to the bar to speak for it. As an organization of young lawyers who are irrevocably dedicated to an independent and free judiciary whose injunctions, judgements and orders must be enforced and obeyed, we are perturbed that a sitting governor who swore to protect our laws and constitution will flagrantly disregard a valid court order and engage in illegal actions that are capable of desecrating the hallowed temple of justice.

“We will not allow this to happen unchallenged. The age-long principle of constitutionalism is very clear that no man is above the law. The governor of Kano state, irrespective of how highly placed, is not an exception.

“The principle of separation of powers is an indispensable ingredient of democracy, open disregard of the judiciary arm by the executive as done by the executive governor of Kano state is a recipe for anarchy. We implore Nigerians to rise against such power-drunk politicians whose actions are capable of eroding our nascent democracy.

“As a group, we will also write to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a time-tested Democrat to intervene and call on the executive Governor of Kano to order as his actions are not just injurious to our democratic settings but are also capable of overstretching our security architecture by throwing Kano state into endemic and endless crisis.

“We also call on the NJC to take more sophisticated steps in protecting the judiciary and making its orders, injunctions and judgements more enforceable.

“Finally, we give the executive Governor of Kano state, H.E Abba K. Yusuf, 48 hours to rescind the decision of reinstating Muhammad Sanusi ii as Emir of Kano against a subsisting court order. Failure to adhere to this ultimatum, we will mobilize Nigerian lawyers to boycott Abba K. Yusuf and the government of Kano state until they purge themselves of this unacceptable disregard for the judiciary.

“The recent order restraining Ado Bayero and others from parading as Emirs are also not granted in the best interest of justice and peace. Consequently, we call on the NJC to wade in and ensure that judicial instruments are not deployed to cause disharmony and erode public peace. “

We’re committed to promoting Aminu Kano legacies — Yusuf

Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State says his administration would continue to keep the legacies of late Malam Aminu Kano by impacting positively on the lives of the people.

Yusuf spoke in Kano on Wednesday night during a symposium to mark the 41st anniversary of Malam Aminu Kano’s death.

He as represented at the event, 22nd in the series, by the Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye,

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Aminu Kano was born on Aug. 9, 1920 and died on April 17, 1983. He was a famous teacher and politician, who founded the People’s Redemption Party.

Yusuf described the Aminu Kano as a nationalist and activist who fought to the uplift and uphold the fundamental rights of common people.

He said Aminu Kano left a legacy of social justice, equality, sincerity of purpose, good governance, and desire that every child should be educated.

Yusuf said his administration was following that footstep by prioritising education as demonstrated in the huge allocation to the sector in the 2024 budget.

He said his administration was also providing foreign scholarships to Kano State indigenes.

Yusuf expressed his government’s readiness to embrace ideas, advice, and recommendations that would enhance the well-being of the people of the state.

He commended the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, Bayero University, for the annual symposium.

  • Kano Patriots berate Gov Yusuf over Ganduje’s probe

Kano Patriots berate Gov Yusuf over Ganduje’s probe

As reactions continue to trall the decision of Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf, to probe his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje; foremost pro democracy group, the Kano Patriots, has come hard on the Governor, saying he is wasting the state resources and administration’s time.

Yusuf, last Thursday, inaugurated two judicial commissions of inquiry to investigate alleged corruption, misappropriation of public properties, political violence and missing persons under his predecessor, Ganduje.

But the Governor limited the commissions’ scope of investigation to 2015 – 2023 when Ganduje served two consecutive terms in office, raising questions as to what happened to the tenure of Mallam Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Yusuf also went further, in a statement on Sunday by his spokesperson,  Sanusi  Tofa, to urge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release the result of its probe into the alleged dollar bribery video involving Ganduje.

But in a statement by its President, Barr. Aliyu Mohammed on Tuesday, the Kano Patriot charged Governor Yusuf, to “start counting in days, hours and minutes of the remaining months and years he has to spend in the office and how he could maximise his stay to better the lives of Kano people”.

The group described Yusuf as “a man using his legs to pursue crickets while carrying elephant on his head”, saying the Governor has abandoned the task of governance for petty politics.

“The problem with some of our leaders is that, they don’t know the difference between politics and governance and they find it difficult most times to separate the two.

“Abba Yusuf of all people should know that the era of politics is gone and the earlier he settles down with the business of governance, the better for him and the entire Kano people. It is very wrong to be playing active politics when the entire world looks unto you to deliver on governance.

“If it is not pure petty politics, how on earth would you describe the probe of your predecessor who is of a different political party and you refused to include the Governor before him, simply because he is of the same political lineage with you? Why can’t the probe include the tenure of Kwankwaso?

“It is becoming obvious, like the APC national chairman said, that Governor Yusuf is shifting public glare from the fact that there is nothing on the ground in the state to justify the sharp increase in statutory allocations to the state since the inception of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

“The governor is suffering from incompetence and lack of direction. If he is bereft of idea on how to move the state forward, from where he met it, he should seek help or ask those who have passed through the terrain before to guide him, rather than chasing shadows.

“If he continues like that, we are afraid, his case would turn out to be the worst form of incompetence. It’s already established that he lacks focus and has not delivered anything tangible since he assumed office.”

The group advised the Governor to close ranks with Ganduje with a view to reconciling him with Kwankwaso and unite all stakeholders in Kano for the sake of peace, love, unity and growth of the State, adding that, the people would not forgive the Governor if he uses politics to destroy the goodwill he has been enjoying from the people.

  • Coalition charges Gov Yusuf to open Kwankwaso’s records as Gov

Coalition charges Gov Yusuf to open Kwankwaso’s records as Gov

The Coalition for Truth and Justice (CTJ) has welcomed the proposed probe of former Kano Umar Ganduje’s administration.

The coalition, at a briefing on Monday, described it as a positive step towards accountability and transparency in governance.

Convener of the coalition,  Obinna Francis, however charged Governor Abba Yusuf to extend the probe to other notable individuals in the State such as Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Francis emphasised that selective justice is a threat to society everywhere in the world, stating failure to investigate Kwankwaso and others will be seen as biased and political.

He said: ”The Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the State Government to Investigate the immediate past administration in the state ought to start their investigation from 1999-2003 and 2011-2015 when 70 per cent of government properties were sold or fraudulently allocated to friends and families, and not just focusing on only 2011-2015.

“But it is unfortunate to bring to our notice that the magnanimous sharing of the state assets happened right under the nose of Abba Kabir Yusuf when he was the Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport. Should we infer that Mr Governor doesn’t know that he who lives in a glass house doesn’t throw stones!

”We all know It is a popular knowledge that the best way to kill a weed is from its root. Therefore, it is alarming that Governor Abba Yusuf seems to focus so much attention on killing the weed of corruption at the top with so much aggression, by solely focusing on witch-hunting the poor in Kano State, which is completely unacceptable.

“We believe that justice should be blind and impartial, regardless of one’s social or political status. Therefore, we call for a fair and comprehensive investigation that includes all relevant parties.

”Governor Abba Yusuf should be wise enough to know that it is only when the foundation of transparency is strong, that’s when corruption can be fully addressed.

”The relentless attacks on Chairman Ganduje by Governor Abba Yusuf and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso not only create a sense of instability in the political landscape of Kano State, but also undermine the democratic process.

“Instead of fostering healthy political competition and constructive dialogue, their actions fuel division and animosity. This not only harms the state’s political stability but also hampers the overall development and progress of Kano State.

”In light of these concerns, the Coalition for Truth and Justice urges Governor Abba Yusuf to extend his investigation to include the period when Rabiu Kwankwaso served as the Governor of Kano State. The government should be upright in its dealings by not selfishly restricting its investigation to between 2015 and 2023, but from 1999 till 2023. This will ensure that justice is served without bias or favoritism.

”It is no news there are rumours among the people of Kano that Governor Yusuf is dinning with Kwankwaso, and that is the reason he’s shielding him from any probe of corruption about his administration in Kano State. The governor must prove it to every Kano citizen that he who comes to equity, must come with clean hands, and this will be a welcome development by all.

”For the record, it can be noted fom 2011-2015, the controversial five kilometer road projects in the 44 local governments were awarded and only for the funds to be misappropriated without the project being executed under the Kwankwaso administration.

”During the same period under review, over N3 billion naira was also earmarked for a particular project but misappropriated by Kwankwaso during his Presidential Campaign in Lagos when N70 million was released by each local government.”

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has initiated the distribution of palliatives to patients admitted in government hospitals across the State.

A statement by the director of special duties, Kano State Ministry of Information, Sani Abba Yola, said the help to the sick was a compassionate response towards alleviating the hardship faced by people in Kano State.

Kano State Commissioner of Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, who represented the governor, distributed 10 kilograms of rice and 10 kilograms of maize to each patient admitted at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) and Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.

“The government is committed to supporting vulnerable populations, especially during illness. We are dedicated to providing assistance wherever it is needed most.

“Our efforts today represent a collective commitment to standing alongside our fellow citizens during their times of need.

“By providing essential food items to hospital patients, we aim to alleviate some of the burdens they face and offer them a measure of comfort,” Dantiye said.

Yusuf seeks clerics’ advise, criticism to deliver good governance

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, yesterday, sought the support of Islamic clerics in the state, to help him deliver good governance to the people, through prayers and wise counselling.

He spoke at Africa House, Government House, Kano during a meeting with the Imams of Juma’at Mosques.

The governor, who just returned from Saudi Arabia after the lesser hajj, told the clerics to always put him on his toes whenever he goes wrong.

He lamented the growing rate of social decadence and appealed to Islamic clerics to preach against societal ills, and  always remember Nigeria, Nigerians and their leaders in prayers in the face of the current economic hardship.

He promised to keep his doors open for advice and constructive criticisms that can encourage good leadership for the betterment of Kano state and the people of the state.

He said he hosted the Ulamas to seek their blessings.

Governor Yusuf, however, tasked the religious leaders to always correct him, whenever he wrongs the state or goes against the wishes of the people.

“The essence of this meeting is to seek the Ulamas’ blessing and hear from them about our administration. Where the government goes wrong, draw our attention and make recommendations on what to do better.

“We will always listen to you and improve on the right things we are doing. This is part of our efforts to restore the lost glory of Kano and its religious values,” he said.

Governor Yusuf further stated that the state government is working to improve the monthly allowances of the Imams, adding that the payment would be through electronic process to checkmate fraud.

He also hinted that plans are underway for the commencement of renovation of all the Juma’at mosques across the state, saying that it is part of the government’s efforts to promote Islamic religion in the state.

He, however,  lamented the rise of immorality in the state, which according to him, is the responsibility of the government to checkmate, just as he urged other stakeholders,  support the Ulamas and security agencies towards fighting crime and immorality in the state.

“Committing sins is part of the reasons why we are in this difficult situation. Morality is gone, immorality has taken its place. We cannot condone this kind of situation.

“Ulamas are no longer respected. This is to the extent that people now abuse them on radio and other media outlets. Kano is known for high moral values and religious practice. So, we would no longer condone these bad acts as we are all stakeholders in ensuring morality in the state.

“We also caution some Ulamas who engage in abusing politicians instead of sensitising and correcting them (politicians). The issue of immorality is high. We will not stop until we address the situation, God’s willing.”

Sheikh Nasir Adam, Chief Imam of Sheikh Amadu Tijjani Juma’at Mosque, Kofar Mata, who spoke on behalf of the Ulamas, said Governor Yusuf has taken a bold step towards moving Kano forward by engaging the Ulamas.

According to him, the governors in Northern Nigeria had failed to consider the fact that Ulamas are key to the development of any society, “that is why the region is facing many problems.”

Sheikh Adams promised to give the governor and his government maximum support.
