Nasarawa orders immediate closure of schools over security threat

Nasarawa Government has ordered the immediate closure of public and private schools to safeguard students across the State.

This follows security threats across the nation particularly at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with the government already in possession of reports suggesting likely security threats in communities within the State, bordering the FCT such as Gitata and Umaisha.

The decision to order the closure of schools across the State was part of the resolution arrived at during an expanded state executive council meeting, which took place at the Government House in Lafia.

Briefing journalists shortly after the council meeting, Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatu Jimaita Sabo, said having considered and reviewed the current situation in the country, especially regarding the security threats in the FCT, the State Government decided to close public and private schools with immediate effect.

Sabo said this has become necessary considering the proximity of the State to the FCT as well as the resolve of the government to ensure that schools in Nasarawa State, operate within a safe environment.

She however explained the directive excludes the exit classes already writing their final examinations, especially in secondary schools.

While announcing that her ministry will, in due course, issue a circular to that effect, the education commissioner however appealed to parents not to panic, adding that Nasarawa State is safe but that the decision was taken as a proactive step to safeguard the lives of both pupils and students across the State.

Sabo appealed to principals and heads to ensure the schools are closed in an orderly manner, especially that there is no threat to any life or property presently in Nasarawa State.

Fire guts Federal Government Girls College Umuahia

Several female Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) students of Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Old Umuahia in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday escaped death when fire gut their hostel blocks.
Though no life was lost, The Nation gathered students and the school lost property worth millions of naira to the inferno.

The students were said to writing exams when the fire started and couldn’t save anything from the incident.

Sources within the school told The Nation the JSS 3 block was affected but occupied by the JSS 2 class as those in JSS 3 had gone home after they had finished their exams.

The sources attributed the cause of the fire to an electrical fault or power surge.

“The three hostel blocks contain over 400 students. Three blocks were affected by the fire. Most of the students’ property and provision were affected. Mattresses and beds got burnt.

“The students left for evening classes and a few minutes later, one of the matrons started shouting Fire. Everybody around had to rush to the scene,” the source said.

Corroborating the sources, the Acting State Fire Chief, Mr. Arua Nnanna in a telephone interview said “the cause of the fire has not been established, but from the report that we got from the field, we are suspecting electrical fault. At the time of the incident, the students were not inside the hostel.

“They were at the other side of the hostel doing one thing or the other because exams was going on.

“The level of alertness was so poor and it happens that there was a spark in one of the control switches. The effect of the spark caused all the electrical wire within the area to catch fire.

“The fire engulfed their mattresses, beds, and other valuables of students. The fire started from one room to the other and by the time they called, we were able to cut the spread of the fire.

“If not because of our presence, the fire could have engulfed the entire hostel blocks, but our presence limited it to a section.

“It will be difficult to estimate the damage of the fire because they lost so much. The damage runs into millions of naira. We equally saved property worth several millions of naira as well.

“From my assessment, each of the rooms contains about 20-30 students and about 3 hostels out of 5 blocks were affected. What they had to fight the fire was not enough, even though they had a fire extinguisher.

“They don’t have an early warning system; a smoke detector. The early warning system could have helped them and the damage wouldn’t have been much. But before they could raise an alarm, the fire had already overpowered the staff and others who were there to fight the fire.”

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu commiserated with the management and staff of the federal government school over the unfortunate fire outbreak.

“The clear ineptitude in this administration is becoming more worrisome, unfortunately, there appears to be no end in sight, making the country a laughing stock in the comity of nations. Government must engage ASUU without further delay in constructive negotiations to find a lasting solution to their complaints.

“Education is one of the factors that influence the progress of any society but in our clime, it appears there is a deliberate effort to stifle the sector to keep the country perpetually in dark and under-developed.

“Nigerian politicians, unfortunately, do not care because their children and wards school abroad. They arrogantly walk out of meetings called to resolve industrial issues and travel abroad to celebrate with their children on the day of graduation; this level of impunity will not be condoned anymore by the working people.

“The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria is in total support of the national protest, it is a just and patriotic cause. We will be strategizing with the leadership of NLC and ASUU on how best to get the government to meet the demand of the university teachers.

“We are convinced that an injury to one is an injury to all, such, everything must be done to dispense with the impasse to avoid a situation where Congress might be compelled to take further drastic actions.”
