    High society honours Ben Bruce at 60

    On Friday, February 19, 2016, something extraordinary happened at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. It was something that would be remembered for years to come. It was a rare merge of logic and fun. You can count on no one else to achieve this oddity than the Nigerian common sense senator, Ben Murray-Bruce.  Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, the Chairman of Sliverbird Groups, clocked 60 recently. He celebrated this special day with a lavish birthday party, laced with the presentation of his book, entitled, ‘A Common Sense Revolution’. The crème de la crème of Nigeria’s high society were in attendance to celebrate one of their own.

    In attendance were Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Obafoluke Otudeko, Bimbo Ashiru, Timi Alaibe, Yeni Kuti, Sam Egwu, Terry Waya and many leading lights in the entertainment industry and political scene. The common sense senator, as he is popularly called, is a strong advocate of sagacity and he sees this as the best solution to Nigeria’s economic and political problems. He doesn’t hesitate to share his views using every platform he gets. His book is no doubt a compilation of intellectual solutions to Nigeria’s problems.

  • Madam Momoh goes home in style

    For a long time to come, the people of Ero community in Ondo State will continue to remember the events of last Saturday. That day, the community played host to dignitaries from across the country and beyond, when the children and family of late Chief (Mrs.) Tayelolu Abigail bid her a final goodbye.

    The final home journey for the late high chief commenced on Thursday, February 18, when a Christian wake-keep was held at her residence in Ero. The following day, her remains were laid to rest in a specially-built vault inside the compound of the Miracle Prayer Ministry International, Ero.

    Though Mama lived a good life and died as an achiever, her family could not hide their emotions, as her remains were lowered into the beautifully-decorated vault. Her death, it is said, left a big vacuum which many have said would be hard to fill.

    Dressed in colourful aso-ebi, the children of the deceased, led by Reverend Emily Orubu, General Overseer of the Miracle Prayer Ministry International, Ile-Ife, Osun State, received their guests who came to bid Mama a final goodbye.

    Popularly called Omo Owa, the late Chief Momoh, who died on August 7, 2015, aged 89, was the Sasere of Ero kingdom. She lived an exemplary life.

    “Mama was my friend. She was close to all her children, including all those around her. As a matter of fact, she saw all those around her as her children and she did whatever she thought would bring joy and laughter into their lives. She would be missed by all, not only in her immediate family, but all around her community,” Rev Orubu said.

Nike’s love is not unreciprocated; her new beau is said to be head over heels in love with her and he doesn’t hesitate to spoil her with gifts.

    Insiders revealed to us that Nike is just as taken with her new man as he is with her, because he doesn’t mind that she had been married before. Nike, who runs a fabrics and gold shop, was once married to popular Lagos businessman and politician, Akeem Alobo Bakare. Akeem is a top Lagos contractor and owner of the popular Gbaja Hall in Surulere. Their marriage lasted for 11 years and it produced two children, a boy and a girl. The marriage crashed over what was described as ‘irreconcilable differences’. Nike got engaged to her new lover few weeks ago and, she is eagerly waiting for them to be joined legally.

Just as there are active participants that keep it interesting and brimming with juicy gists, there are close watchers who may seem passive, but take out time to nose into every occurrence. At the moment, close watchers of the high society have their searchlights beaming, as they try to search out Vivian Chilogi. They are desperate to know what has become of the elegant lady.

    It is not that anything untoward has happened to her, but her absence and silence has become a subject of discourse in the social circle. Vivian, in her 40s, used to occupy a prominent place in the social scheme. She is irrefutably one of the best dressed single ladies around and she makes heads turn whenever she saunters into any gathering. Flaunting a preference for pricey clothes and accessories from the stables of world renowned designers, her astute understanding of trends makes her a winner everywhere she goes.

    While she has every other thing going for her, an area she is lagging is her love life. Since her romance with the owner of a luxury goods store went sour, none of the men desiring her company has succeeded in wooing her. However, Vivian has recently recoiled into her shell. Not a few people believe she chose to go private because she was bereaved. It can be recalled that she lost her younger sister some time ago. Reports said she was extremely devastated by the unfortunate incident. But for events she has personal attachment to, she is no longer visible on the social radar.

    Death is shamed and made inconsequential when a departed is not mourned, but celebrated. Last Friday, controversial politician, Senator Iyiola Omisore’s father -in-law, Dr Ayinde Orafunminiyi Orafidiya’s final burial programme commenced. On that day, a service of songs was held in honour of the deceased at his residence, Ayinde Orafidiya close, Parakin, Ile-Ife. It was followed with burial rites the next day, at St. Murumba College, Old Catheco, Ile-ife.

    The remains of Pa Ayinde were later interned at his residence, while reception followed immediately after at St. Murumba College. It was indeed an exclusive party, as Erelu Mojisola Omisore and her siblings buried their father, who died at the age of 78. Adewale Ayuba was on the bandstand for the main party, while hip hop act, 9ice, performed at the after party, which held at Cameron Hotel, Ile-Ife.

    And the burial arrangement is in top gear. The late elder Fowora was a successful engineer. He was a Principal Consultant, Ademola Fowora Associates. The burial is being planned to be one of its kind in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, as politicians, businessmen and party goers have started warming up for the burial.

    Popular Lagos socialite, Debo Owolana, and his wife, Bola Owolana, are presently in grief. There is nothing more spirit-shattering than the loss of a child.  The search for their son, Ademola Mohammed,  who disappeared recently, has finally come to a tragic end.  26-year-old Nigerian-British man, Ademola, who lived in London, went missing on Feb. 20 in the US after he went to a club in Chicago with friends.

    Debo’s hopes of reuniting with his son have been dashed with the discovery of his body on top of an electric rail car on Tuesday Feb. 23 at a repair yard, in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side. It still remains unclear how Ademola’s body ended up on top of a Metra Electric rail. It seems he was electrocuted to death. He was in Chicago with his mother to visit relatives when he met his untimely death.

    The heart of a mother is a deep abyss filled with love, wisdom, forgiveness and selflessness. Dehinde Harrison knows this better than most, as his love for his mother continues to increase every day. Dehinde Harrison is undoubtedly a successful man. He is the owner of a popular undertaking firm, Ebony Casket. He has been in the industry for decades and has come to be known for managing big wigs’ funeral. He came into limelight in 1996 when he undertook the burial of former President, Dr Nnamdi Azikwe.

    His mother, Madam Christiana Aina Bank-Anthony, fondly called Sisimi, by her children and grandchildren, recently turned 80 and, Dehinde seized the opportunity to celebrate her in a grand way. The grand celebration began with a thanksgiving service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Faji Lagos, and a reception followed afterwards. Sisimi was described as a humble woman with a gentle spirit and a disciplinarian. She was born to the late Pa Anthony and Madam Emilia Omoliye on the popular Tokunbo Street in Lagos Island. She has been a Christian since she was a teenager and was a member of the choir at St. Andrews Anglican Church, Okepopo, Lagos Island. Apart from Mr Dehinde, Mama is also blessed with two sons, Ayiri and Timehin.
