The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl (VI)

Because she’s constantly flowing in the super-natural, nothing takes her by surprise. She already knows her examination questions long before the time-table is set. She’s more intelligent than her teachers and is wiser than her ancestors.

(Excerpt of a poem-“The Amazing Power of A Spirit-Filled Girl)

    Hello Aunty Temilolu,

Thanks for raising a voice for the Nigerian girl. This page has always been my reason for reading The Nation newspaper on Sundays. Honestly, I believe that this inspirational column of yours would change many young minds including parents who have been misled by the traumatic side of life. I pray God will continue to give you the wisdom to accomplish this great task. May God bless you ma.

    Sarah, Enugu

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

Please how can I be a devoted woman of God? Love you!

How to be a devoted woman of God-

    1. Be a friend of God, receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour
    2. Live your life strictly according to His principles as written in the Holy Bible like the only reason you are in the world is to please God.
    3. Ensure you receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
    4. Renew your mind and ignite your spirit daily by studying and meditating on the scriptures.
    5. Be determined to live a holy life. Be disciplined. Guard your heart with all diligence.
    6. Do something to promote the kingdom of God. In your church, school, office or anywhere you find yourself – be an ambassador of God, win souls and preach the gospel.
    7. Pray at every given opportunity. Form a habit of constantly communicating with God.
    8. Be the first to get to church, fellowship etc.

I love you too. May God bless you and make you VERY GREAT. May He make you an unusual weapon in His hands and make all your dreams come true in Jesus name.

My darling sisters and every wonderful fan of this page – God’s page,

Last week, I began discussing a weapon of mass destruction which a lot of Christians have at their disposal but just ignore, a shield for our defenceless heads, our power generator, a balm of Gilead which would soothe us and free us from every burden, God’s pronouncements upon our lives which no devil can alter unless we don’t put them to use, the key to unlocking the greatest and darkest mysteries, the solution to the vagaries and vicissitudes of life, the lamp for our feet and the light on our path through life, the wisdom we need to coast through life, our strength, the enemy’s dread, our spiritual sword, sharper than any double-edged sword – the word of God. When last did you study it outside church? How many verses can you recite offhand? I welcome you all to school on Sunday!

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”

    Psalm 119:130 KJV

The word of God is so powerful that it has the antidote to every difficult situation we may ever find ourselves in life, situations which all the money in the world and even your G.O. cannot solve. When you allow the word of God to saturate your senses, the power of God moves over your life and His light beams upon your life. You instantly become your own prophet because it opens up your understanding and reveals all you need to know about your life and the paths to follow to your promised land while showing you pitfalls to avoid and traps set by the devil. It even reveals to you the mind of others towards you and a lot of things which don’t even concern you because you are already carrying God Himself. Doesn’t He know everything? When you begin to soak yourself in the word, believe me, you will always know the examination questions even before the time-table is out because the Holy Spirit will always act as your spy. Whoa! Now, can you ever fail? You will always cart all the prizes on the prize-giving day. How I wish I knew all of this as a teenager!

When you are daily loaded with the word of God, you will always be surrounded by the angels of God and they would always bring you super information which all the world’s greatest G.Os put together can never give you. That one information could be all that you need to become that which you are destined to be in life which is why the enemy has fought you tooth and nail and thrown all sorts your way just to ensure you don’t get to your beautiful throne; the reason why your life has been like “hell on earth” so far. God wants you to be what He created you to be. You need to start getting all the information and your weapons and ammunition right away. Time is running out fast. What would make you shine now may never make you shine later in life – in fact, you may never have the energy to pursue it. Pick up your bible and start digging deep. Refuse to be distracted by anything. Forget your friends on face book etc. and concentrate please. By the time your glory arrives, they’ll be the ones to broadcast. Pick up your bible now and draw up a daily reading plan. I pray the mighty power of God rests upon your life and open up your understanding in Jesus name. AMEN!

  • Better to be the emotional thermostat

Looking for a partner? Yes, that is the feeling for many out there. The desire at this point is to magnetise that dream man or woman. The expectation is also usually very high. First of all, we look for the perfect image; someone who looks good and has a good carriage. For lovebirds that are lucky, they find the kind of soul mate that they desire but unfortunately for them, they later discover that the emotional search has only just begun. This is because a great face and good physical attributes do not necessarily translate into a great heart.

Relationship problems are hardly anything that we want to experience in our relationships, but they are an inevitable part of spending time with another person. The crux of the matter here is that nobody is really perfect and it’s impossible for anyone to actually be perfect. And, realistically, why would you want to be with someone who is or appears to be? There’s no growth and learning that comes out of that. Life like love is indeed a learning curve; a combination of the good, the bad and the ugly. You try, try and try again.

Patiently, you can get the other person to see the bad spots and together make a difference. When we tend to have the desire to want to “change” our partner forcefully, then there would be some resentments or confusion. Our action here stems from this inner desire to control the other person. It’s rooted in the thinking that “they” are the ones who need to change and not ourselves.

This is a distorted belief that stems from our ego (fear-based mind), which blocks us from truly experiencing real genuine love. So it is important for us to be willing to recognise our own desires to control or change your partner and set the intention to let it go whenever it comes up.

Even when your heart is not in control, you just have to be smart and not become a desperado. Solomon loved Aderinola so much and like the thermometer, all he did was to monitor the emotional temperature from time to time. Unfortunately, the lover boy was not in control. In a relationship, it is better to function like the thermostat and not the thermometer (mugu) if you must be in control.

The thermostat senses the temperature so that the system’s temperature is maintained near a desired set point. The thermostat does this by switching heating or cooling devices on or off, or regulating the flow of a heat transfer fluid as needed, to maintain the correct temperature. Modern thermostats interestingly are almost exclusively digital, but in the past what we had were non-digital thermostat.

To love someone means to accept the other person for who they truly are – flaws and all. Even the heart that you so desperately crave forgets to say happy birthday, waste money or things you do not like or talks too much in public, you just have to love him or her. Unfortunately, a lot of people find it so hard to accept the other heart this way. They argue and argue over the same things all the time. Instead of getting the change they desire, the other heart gets hardened and gradually they begin to fall apart.

A school of thought actually describes love as a battlefield, but anyone with emotional wisdom and skill would know how to maneuvre the emotional process without stress. Once you master the ‘tricks’, you would also be able to help others get through their emotional challenges. On your finger tips would be skills of how to cure a broken heart, make someone jealous, or just ease your own loneliness,

If you want to be successful in your relationship, it is better to always look at the pros and cons of every decision you take or intend to take. If the outcome is good, then we all smile but if it is the other way round, then it is important to think of alternatives that you give that soft landing desired.

For instance, when you choose to date or marry someone, you’re not necessarily choosing the person. Rather, you’re choosing the problems that you want to deal with that emerge in your relationship with that person.

Let’s face it: When we’re in a relationship problems are inevitable. No matter how hard we try we simply just can’t avoid them. When we’re with one person the problems may be much more challenging and difficult than with another person – but it doesn’t meant that there aren’t any. It’s simply the bye-product of being in a relationship.

Dr John Gottman, founder of the Gottman Method Couples Therapy, states that 69% of the problems that we deal with in our relationships are never solved. What determines whether the couple stays together or not relies on whether both people are able to accommodate and accept the traits and characteristics of their partner that irritate them.

Seeing that statistic can be pretty disheartening, but it can also be empowering, because it shows the importance of taking personal responsibility. We have the power to control our own behaviour, actions and reactions. And we have a choice as to how we want to behave and even if we want to be in a relationship with a person with that one trait that drives you crazy.

  • Jewellery care tips

    Jewellery care tips

Apply lotion, cosmetics, hairspray and perfume before dressing in jewellery. When undressing, wipe each piece with a clean soft cloth to remove oils and perspiration.

Store in a fabric-lined box, separately or individually-wrapped in tissue to prevent scratches.

    NEVER:

Never wear jewellery when doing physical work such as housekeeping, gardening or exercise.

Never expose jewellery to household cleaning products.

Never expose jewellery to chlorine swimming pools or hot tubs.

    TIPS FOR CLEANING:

Follow the instructions appearing on the label or box.

Clean in a secure location, not the rim of a sink where a piece may slip down the drain.

Use only a soft brush, never sharp or hard objects, to remove dirt or particles.

Clean your jewellery often; lotions, soaps and skin oils alter the optical properties of diamonds and gemstones, causing them to look dull.

Seriously soiled jewellery should be cleaned professionally.

Clean diamond jewellery with a soft brush dipped in warm water and mild detergent; rinse under running water.

Never expose pearl jewellery to chemicals or solvents and store each piece in a soft bag.

Don’t expose coloured gemstones to chemicals, solvents or ultrasonics without knowing their specific cleaning requirements.

    TIPS FOR LONG LIFE:

Keep your laboratory reports in a safe location, separate from jewellery pieces, for security.

Have your jewellery cleaned and checked by a professional for worn mountings, loose prongs and general condition at least once per year.

Have white gold re-plated, platinum re-polished and prongs re-tipped as necessary to maintain original condition (generally every 24 months or so).

Have frequently-worn pearls restrung as necessary, with a knot between each pearl to prevent loss if the string breaks.

Some coloured gemstones should not be exposed to sudden temperature changes; know your pieces and their needs.

Select daily-wear jewellery that is in harmony with your lifestyle and schedule of activities.

Treat each piece as if it were a family heirloom, for someday it may be.

  • The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl (V)

The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl (V)

She feeds on the word of God which transmits divine energy into her and gives her fire to fly. The word of God is constantly in her heart shut up in her bones like a burning fire.” (Excerpt of a poem-“The Amazing Power of A Spirit-Filled Girl)

Hello friends, I’m happy to be in touch again with you all today. I pray God’s mighty power rests upon your life and part a way to your long-awaited promised land even before the end of this year in Jesus name. No matter what disappointment this year has brought you contrary to what you expected, I implore you in the name of God to be happy and hopeful against all odds. There’s nothing strange about your predicament, hold on to your faith, thank God from the bottom of your heart and watch how God will turn around your situation and push you to outstanding greatness and everlasting joy much to the enemy’s chagrin. So shall it be in Jesus name. Amen!

Before I discussed the International Day of the Girl 2015 some weeks back, I started enlightening you on the above topic. I hope you’ve learnt something so far. The year is running to an end and you could still make use of this power to achieve all that you were set out to achieve in this year. I welcome you all to school on Sunday.

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Joshua 1:8 KJV

In one of the text messages I get daily, a young lady wrote that she didn’t think being chaste and keeping one’s virginity till marriage still exists and according to her she had always thought it “old-fashioned.” And the first thing that came to my mind was could the word of God be old-fashioned? Are today’s teenagers and youth generally acquainted with the word of God? Sadly, I doubt.

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

    Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

“Soul and spirit” are like “bone joint and bone marrow.” “Soul” is that invisible dimension of our life that we are by nature. “Spirit” is what we are by supernatural rebirth. Jesus said, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit”. Without the awakening, creative, regenerating work of the Spirit of God in us we are merely “natural” rather than “spiritual.”  We must not forget that the bible tells us we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers and spiritual wickedness in high places. What this means is for us to enjoy life and wade through the mysterious ocean of life, we need to be very spiritual. Unfortunately, too many people only start becoming spiritual when they get into trouble and I tell you sometimes it may be too late. They may not even have the required energy to fight such battles.

The best thing that can happen to any girl right now is to love reading the word of God like love letters and let it imprint on her soul to carry her through life. The word of God is light and darkness can never over-shadow light. The word of God is reading God and communicating with Him. Before you know it, you are carrying Him in you. The bible tells us our God is a consuming fire. Therefore, any life daily soaked in the word of God is resistant to the wiles of the devil. A lot of afflictions which manifest in our lives later in life were already planted when we were young. And I must say, you never know the type of star you carry. The greater your star and greatness, the greater the battles you have to contend with such that you could fight the same battle for years and wish you were never born. The only way out is to be plugged to God our source. Remember, “…not by power, nor by might but by my spirit saith the lord of Hosts.” Zech.4:6

These are the last days when the bible says wickedness will wax stronger and stronger. Which power, my darling sisters, do you have against the enemy? The earlier you kit yourself the better. The earlier you begin to eat the word of God the better for you. What accrues to your destiny in life is much too great and beautiful to be missed. Learn to daily memorise scriptures and see the power of God move in your life. As you master these verses and they resonate in your spirit, your mind would be illuminated and your senses would be sharpened. As you daily rub minds with God, you know God more and would start doing exploits!   Daniel 11:32. All your divine abilities, gifts and talents would explode and manifest with speed. You will not only display unusual intellectual prowess, you will develop prophetic gifts, have revelatory knowledge almost about everything through dreams and visions. And if you get used to this daily exercise, you can never miss a step in the journey of life. Also, your imagination would carry so much power that whatever you imagine will come to pass because it’s incubated in the Holy Spirit.

  • Exquisite mermaid dress

    Exquisite mermaid dress

Going for an event and don’t know what to wear? You can never go wrong with a mermaid dress. The mermaid dress, also known as fish tail dress, is an hour glass shaped dress that hugs the body firmly and flare out from the knee. This sexy and irresistible dress flatters the curves and highlights the waist and hips.

Mermaid dress is quite enchanting and high fashioned. It is suitable for all body sizes and shapes. It adds a touch of elegance, gracefulness and confidence to your look. However, the mermaid dress can only be worn for evening events and red carpet occasions. If you want to add extra attention to your waist, you can add a belt. But this should be done only if your dress doesn’t have many designs or embellishments. Pair with lovely earrings, preferably chandelier earrings, a nice clutch purse and shoes.

  • ‘We need affirmative finance action for women’

‘We need affirmative finance action for women’

Afoma Adigwe studied film and acting in London but today she is a woman of many parts. The energetic entrepreneur had been an air hostess, actress, designer and she has been passionate about empowering women through her organisation, Uplifting Women Through Farming (UWTF), in the last fifteen years. In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, the woman who hails from Issele-Uku in Delta State talks about  poor infrastructure, accessing credit facilities for women in the grassroots and why feeding Nigeria and Africa must be given adequate priority.

WHY are you interested in the agricultural sector? My passion has always been for women in agriculture. For me, food is life. We all eat food and we must eat to survive.  Agriculture is the only viable alternative to oil and gas. A lot has been said about agricultural development in Africa.  Recently, my organisation was invited to partner with African Development Bank from the just concluded high level conference in Senegal tagged, “Feeding Africa: an action plan on transformation of agriculture in Africa” organised by African Development Bank under the auspices of His Excellency, Macky Sall, President of the Federal Republic of Senegal, who co-hosted with the African Union Commission, UN Economic Commission for Africa and Partnership.

Why are you passionate about women?

Over the years, a lot has been said about the key constraints affecting women and youths’ ability in transforming agriculture in Africa. UWTF is here to walk the talk with action. I speak on behalf of our women and our youths who are the leaders of tomorrow. Our focus is not to criticise but to encourage our government and other African countries by reaching out to the different stakeholders. We are in partnership with African Development Bank and the organisation is ready to take a quick action on the solutions of transforming agriculture in Africa to the next level. The Dakar conference was marked by bold decisions to inform on the Action Plan for agricultural transformation in Africa.

What are some of the things that would bring about the required change in the sector?

The intention is to launch an affirmative finance action for women in Africa. The bank would therefore work with partners to leverage 43billion in financing for women farmers, agribusinesses and other women-owned enterprises. This will be achieved through the establishment of a US $300 million facility to derisk financing to women owned businesses by commercial banks and micro finance institutions.

In addition, the central banks in Africa will set aside special funds to allow farmers access credit at reduced interest rates and also for long term agricultural loans with longer term maturity. There would also be increase in commercial financing in the agriculture sector by establishing an agricultural risk sharing facility to de-risk the financial value chain and de-risk the agricultural value chains across the continent. That is not all. Some of the other things being worked on include developing agribusiness Diaspora bonds to securitise remittance flows for investments in African agriculture and agribusiness.

How long have you been doing this?

I have been on this for about fifteen years now. When I started at that time, I told them that it was the alternative to oil and gas. Now you can see the trend, not just in Nigeria but in Arica as a whole. It is important to uplift women through farming. It is important for each stakeholder to partner with the African Development Bank on the transformation agenda. We need to find a lasting solution to agriculture and stop doing lip service to it, now it is action.

My desire is to wake up everybody and I have been advocating that our first ladies should have agriculture as part of the projects they would be working on. A lot of times funds are released for women’s projects but somehow the women do not have access to these funds. I strongly believe that it is better for the women to work together and be able to access what would be beneficial to all.

The problem that grassroots farmers have is lack of information. This, I have studied in the last fifteen years. Of course, we know that the other problem is lack of fund, but, unfortunately, if there is a fund set aside somewhere and I do not know about, how can they access the funds? So, the women are handicapped, most of them do not go to the bank and when they go to the bank, there are so many other limitations waiting for them there.

We know the protocols in the bank. If someone like me cannot get to access the fund, how can the layman access the funds? So, we have to go to the women at the grassroots and solve their developmental needs. Sometimes, these women do not even need the funds. What they need is the facility to work with or infrastructure. When we talk about infrastructure, then we are talking about road, water, land, transportation and electricity. If you give them funds and they pay so much to transport their goods from one point to the other, then they would still not be okay.

We also know what it takes for a woman to own land or property in some parts of the country. Unfortunately, these are some of the things that they ask for as collateral. In the banking system, there is nothing like self identification, so where do these women stand? So, my fight for women has always been how can these women have collateral or be able to access the funds that are set aside for them? We all have to solve this problem collectively. Government must make sure that the right infrastructure is in place.

How do you intend to get to your targets?

I am also targeting not just first ladies in Nigeria but African first ladies, so that all hands would be on deck. Right now, we are planning a summit to get all the African first ladies together; everybody has to wake up. We are also looking at the corporate sector and CEOs of banks and their spouses. If you cannot plant what your husband is eating, farm and produce for Nigeria, plant and produce for Africa.  We must all try to produce for Nigeria and bring about a positive change in the economy. If banks can set aside some staff to go look for deposits, how come they cannot go to the grassroots and look for investments?

Experts also believe that farming would help to reduce the problem of unemployment in the country

Agriculture has to go with patience; our youths have to be patient. If you are talking about agriculture, you do not have to grow something today and expect to get the money immediately. We have to start afresh. I was born and bred in Lagos, but now I am back at home because of farming. I have a palm plantation there. We have to take action and get things back on track. A number of people think that it is not interesting but we can learn new ways of framing. How can we do it these days so that our mothers do not carry fire wood on their heads or cassava on their backs?

I started the program in Delta state in year 2000. The first thing I did a workshop on how to make use of cassava and we collaborated with IITA. The following year we work with FAO and later the UN. That was how we started working with women in Kogi state and then spread to other parts of the country. We have been able to access funds from the Nigerian Industrial bank for microfinance.

Recently, I have been putting my house in order to set up a microfinance bank for women. I have always had a relationship with the international community but I prefer to have a bank which the women can access directly. We also have the Agric talk show which I would be anchoring. Here we would have the stakeholders talk about the issues and how to proffer solutions to the problems. What I did was to get people attracted to Agriculture. I have also been doing a number of things with the youths. I have also been collaborating with Embassies and agencies. Let us rise and feed Africa.

  • Sashay in gladiators

Do you know that you can be comfortable and versatile with gladiator sandals? Believe me, it will be the best sandals worn ever. Gladiator sandal has been modified into many different ways, including less straps and softer angles. Brightly coloured gladiator sandals will swamp the outfit and draw all the attention to your feet.

Tips on how to rock it

    • Match low gladiator sandals with jeans and longer dresses or skirts. Short sandals can also go with short skirts.
    • Plain brown, short gladiators would go really well with a white dress.
    • Wear medium to knee-high length gladiator sandals with shorter dresses, especially dresses that sit above the knees, short skirts and shorts.
    • Select a simple black, white or other single colour outfit that is short in length and allows the length of the sandal to shine.
  • Re: Life’s unpredictable trajectory

IN our youthful days, we live life to the fullest with so much self-assurance, we follow the path we choose with so much zeal and gusto and so much faith in the future. For a lot of people, they have no regrets whatsoever and are forever thankful for the wise or should we say lucky choices they made. While some have followed the wrong paths and retraced their steps, some just keep following the wrong paths and end up becoming the victim at every given time. What could be the cause? Fate, super-natural powers, perpetual folly or lack of good counsel? The list could be endless. Bimpe’s story was published last week. The path she chose to follow has left her in so much pain. Bimpe, who is from an upper class background, had the world laid at her feet and the opportunity to continue living a life of ease and great wealth as long as she lives settled for men she had to “raise.” Why? Because she grew up watching her father treat her mother who was from a lower class with disrespect and could not imagine a man doing such to her. She’s been through two marriages. One was real and the other a sham which brought her beautiful world crashing into smithereens. Her story is indeed a very pathetic one. Some readers sent in their suggestions and pieces of advice and of course did not leave out some whipping.

    Dear Bimpe,

Allowing your parents’ marriage to overshadow your life to the extent that you married a man for the reason you did is wrong. Secondly, any man that will start making a pass at you and urging you to leave your marriage for him has no sense of decency, decorum and definitely doesn’t have your interest at heart. Thirdly, did you carry your daughter along? You have been wronged but you have also wronged others. And before I forget, it is high time children realised that their parents’ marriage is none of their business. You only owe them prayers and good wishes to get over their own weaknesses while you deal with yours. Or else, you will experience what the woman here has just experienced.

    Nkechi

This is sooo sad and my heart keeps breaking at every word. Bimpe’s a woman with a golden heart but fell into the hands of wrong and ungrateful men. This is so typical of Nigerian men. They are so full of lies. They tell their sweet nothings because of what they want to get from you. Morenikeji shouldn’t have done that to her mum after all she’s done for her. I can only pray to God to strengthen her, restore all that she’s lost and give her good health. She shouldn’t focus on any man right now but on her kids. Start life afresh and make positive changes. May God help us from these wolves called men.

    Tutu

    Hello Temi,

Bimpe should know that only she can wake herself up from the nightmare, no one can be in charge of her happiness except her. I believe strongly that Ropo will not exit her from the house. As for her daughter, she should let her be and focus on finding happiness from her other children. I believe that the daughter will come to her senses later. She should pray towards it. She should also focus her energy in doing things that will help her recover from the financial strain the two men have caused her.

    Uzoekwe Chika

    Dear Bimpe,

To start with, I congratulate you for being a champion and the heroine in the story. You played a prominent role in the lives of those who brought your world crashing. And without you, they would never be where they are today. True, we all have to bear the consequences of our actions and the path we choose to follow. You followed the path you thought would be best for your emotional well-being. The only problem here is that you never mentioned God in your journey through life. From your perception of life, God has never really been deeply involved. God needs your attention now. There is no way you can fulfill your divine destiny by shutting God out of your life. His plans are usually different from ours and we must carefully and patiently look out for the path He has charted for us to follow otherwise we end up in great trouble. Your main focus should have been God’s ultimate plan for you and not what your mother experienced in her marriage.

It’s excruciatingly painful to be let down by people you love with all your heart even after ending up penniless for their sakes. And even a greater tragedy wallowing in the pain they have caused you. Now, you have to talk to your inner man and be strong. You need to help yourself; no one can help you with that. Believe me, others have experienced worse and bounced back seven times higher. You cannot be an exception. It’s all in your hands. Forgive and forget them all if you want to be vindicated by God and have the last laugh over this issue.

“Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God. Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.”

    Job 22:21, 22, 25-28

You are a conqueror. So, act your role, live your role and enjoy life. Happy new life!

‘I don’t need a panel to tell me I’m beautiful’

She is the Director General of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, the government agency saddled with promoting tourism in the country. Sally Mbanefo has been in the saddle for over two years, the period that has also witnessed new challenges and development in the sector.
An ex-executive director of a commercial bank, a lawyer, wife, and mother, Mbanefo, in this interview with PAUL UKPABIO, looks back to her period so far at NTDC and gives an insight into the way forward for tourism to succeed in the country.

HOW is NTDC coping with insurgency and tourism? Nigeria by nature is a preferred tourist destination, from the diverse cultural heritage and its topography.

The country is rich in natural beauty with long blue beaches, rivers, caves, lakes and forests that make her a preferred tourism destination.

Let me state that insurgency is a global issue, it is not peculiar to Nigeria alone. For instance, countries like America, Iran, Iraq, Egypt and Israel, among others, have a history of terrorism.

There are many festivals in Nigeria like the Calabar Festival, Argungu Festival, Port Harcourt Lagos festivals and so on, In comparison with the Rio of Brazil and Notting Hill carnival in UK, how will you rate our events?

Truly, Nigeria has many festivals, fascinating ones. Our festivals are unique, captivating and they tell a story. Festivals like the Osun Oshogbo Festival in Osun State, Mare Festival in Ondo State, Igbo Ukwu (New Yam) Festival in the east, Kano State colourful and popular Durbars, Arugungu Fishing Festival in Kebbi State, cultural dance troupe from Benue State, a dying pit in Daura, Katsina State, and many more are very thrilling.

Our festivals over the years have been attracting lots of tourists. Sango Festival in Oyo State has been exported to over 40 countries in the world today. In spite of Ebola outbreak, Osun Oshogbo in 2014 recorded over 12,000 tourist arrivals with almost N20million related expenditure.

However, in comparison with the Rio Carnival of Brazil and Notting Hill Carnival in UK, our festivals are not really there yet due to lack of adequate funds, inadequate infrastructures, negative image of Nigeria internationally, lack of proper awareness among our people and of course over dependence on oil revenue.

What effort is NTDC putting to ensure the hospitality industry in Nigeria competes favourably with its counterparts?

Under my administration, NTDC is really doing a lot. We have begun the campaign for domestic tourism in Nigeria with the authentication of tourist sites in the six geo-political zones with Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre being authenticated recently under religious tourism. Also, we have compiled a domestic tourism calendar of all our festivals; we have redesigned our web portal to make it more informative and user friendly.

We have also been able to successfully bridge the gap between the public sector and the private sector through successful public private partnership (PPP). NTDC’s partnership with Viko Group of Companies limited has opened six tourism information desks at Abuja, Lagos (2), Kano, Calabar and Enugu airports. This is part of the corporation’s effort towards promoting domestic tourism, disseminate tourism information, assist in gathering and collating data of tourists entering Nigeria and to create jobs for our teeming unemployed youth.

The game changer is a tourism bond and a tourism departure levy. For example, a tourist may have seen the slave trade story from other African countries’ perspectives but the story is not complete until they have visited Nigeria for the last part of the jigsaw. They may enjoy golf and so want to play in the sunshine which we have an abundance of, but be surrounded by first-class amenities at a price that represents value. The tourist may want to travel across water to an offshore beach resort just as he does in Tanzania or Zanzibar. He or she may want an ecological experience and yet know that when they get back to base they too have comfort, a great meal and seamless internet connections. The tourist may want a well-planned tour of durbars and festivals but know that at each place he will be spending the night in comfortable world-class accommodation that enhances the experience. We want to create family-holiday destinations whether these are at beaches, water parks or even focused around Nigeria’s numerous lakes. There are ideas that we need to focus and galvanise to create a product that meets all health and safety requirements.

It is being said that countries like UK, Russia, Ukraine even Ghana are making a lot of money through educational tourism. Many of our people go there for study. What can NTDC do to help Nigeria gain from this thriving industry?

We have begun talks with the Ministry of Education to see how tourism can be included in the curriculum of primary school level education. Children can visit zoos, understand ecotourism and visit tourism sites as part of their schoolwork. That way we can create a paradigm shift from a very young age

Nigeria depends on crude for sustenance and in the face of dwindling fortune of crude oil, how do you think tourism can be positioned to generate revenue?

Tourism is about providing assets for people to invest in. We intend to launch a tourism bond underpinned by what will be secure revenue stream generated from a prospective tourism development levied on departures. The bond will give us the money we need for investment in the six projects today and these investments will create jobs; careers, transfer of skills and the right product.

The yield on the bond will recognise that we want investment and recognises where we are on the tourism ladder today. It’s all about upside. People will not invest in assets unless there is a revenue stream from that investment and a return on their capital. What are the assets we have in Nigeria? Nigeria is blessed with waterfalls, caves, hotels, parks, sandy beaches, large lakes, and historic sites. Nigeria is able to offer a range of tourism experiences applicable to the general holidaymaker as well as the traveller looking for something off the beaten track. To invest in tourism, there must be clarity on how people can invest their tourism dollars for a fixed period, how they can monetise this tourism investment and how they can see a clear path for exit or onward sale of their investment, if need be. My idea is to identify for investment, tourism projects aimed at specific tourists and to create an enabling environment that respects and encourages this investment.

And the first step is to identify six projects in the six geopolitical zones that will benefit from investment and bring these investments up to a world standard. I see a read-across for Nigerian tourism with countries like Morocco, Tanzania, Vietnam, Zambia, Rwanda, South Africa, parts of the Caribbean and even Peru in terms of creating a unique experience not to mention beach experience and golfing experience, where with the right type of investment we will provide alternatives to Morocco and parts of the Caribbean. We are a friendly nation welcoming of visitors. Once identified, I intend to put the six (specific) projects into a prospectus which should be a document that forms the compendium of opportunities we are inviting people to invest in.

Where do you see tourism in the next five years?

With the right funding and necessary support in place, Nigeria will become the most preferred destination of choice. Tourism in Nigeria will be very competitive as with other countries of the world. Nigeria cannot continue to remain a mono economy. My dream for Nigeria’s tourism is for youth involvement in tourism, make Nigeria a thriving domestic tourism haven; in two years, have at least one decent tourism site per geo-political zone and 2-3 in five years in each zone, encourage developmental journalism by Nigerian press, include tourism in primary and secondary schools’ curricular. Domestic tourism is a phenomenon identified to hold key to the development of many developed countries. If it is properly planned, developed, controlled and marketed, it is capable of sustaining the economy and checking rural-urban migration in Nigeria.

Being the executive director of a commercial bank, lawyer, wife, mother, a technocrat, amongst many other things, how has it been as the DG so far?

Being the DG NTDC so far, God has been faithful and merciful to me. Since I became the NTDC DG in May 2013, I have given the corporation a new direction. I have drawn up a new roadmap navigating new frontiers in tourism. An important priority here is the focus on creating synergy by developing the local content of the tourism industry. Creating synergy is crucial, that is why the promotion of domestic as a source of generating revenue and creating jobs is on the right line.

You are also a philanthropist; the founder of Sally Mbanefo Foundation, being the NTDC DG in a country that an average person lives below the dollar, how have you managed to make your tenure a success?

My success is putting my staff first by treating them as a human capital asset; the most valuable asset. Philanthropist may not be the word to describe me, I believe that God blessed me with careers that have empowered me and as such all that I have earned or received from God belong to God through the poor. I do what I do because it is what God expects from me. Not because I am a philanthropist who would give back without thinking of God. I give because I believe all I have belongs to God and I will make every under privileged child happy by showing my love for God through them. I love working for God because he says whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me.

This came to me as a surprise, when researching you I found out you are also a painter. I know women multitask but this is taking it up the notch. Do you drive tractors too?

Yes, I love trucks and tractors, and art is my life.

On a lighter mood, were you ever a beauty queen?

No, of course not! I don’t need a panel of judges to tell me whether I am beautiful or not. I believe every one created by God is beautiful in one way or another, some subtler than others, yet God has created a fit for every creature he made.
