ADC can’t match PDP, says George

    …says defectors should return home

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) member Chief Olabode George yesterday declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) cannot match the main opposition party.

He lamented that the defectors, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who once left the party and later returned to the fold, is repeating his past mistakes.

George, who spoke at a ceremony in Lagos marking what he described as ‘PDP Restoration,’ said the defectors are chasing shadows, stressing that they are only trying to miss the opportunities offered by PDP for chieftains to excel.

George chided Atiku and Senator David Mark for dumping a formidable party that gave them relevance as number two and three citizens for a weak platform facing an uncertain future.

Accompanied by other party elders, including Senator Kofo Bucknor, Mrs. Onikepo Oshodi, Gen. Tajudeen Olanrewaju, Dr. Adeniji, and Dr. Amos Fawole, the former military governor of Ondo State warned against political miscalculation.

He said, “Those who benefitted optimally as umber two and three men in the country are decimating the PDP. They were mentored and respected by the party. They should know that their new group cannot match the PDP, which is an iroko tree. They went out before and came back to the party. They should come back.”

He wondered why Atiku and his group cannot come to terms with presidential zoning , which was the idea of the PDP founding fathers.

Reiterating his position on power rotation, he said justice still demands that the presidency should be retained for four more yeas after 2027 because President Muhammadu Buhari from the North spent eight years in office.

The party elder frowned at the penchant for manipulating the PDP governors to join the APC, thereby decimating the party.

He urged the APC leaders to desist from interfering in the affairs of the PDP, assuring that the party will overcome its challenges.

Noting that PDP is weathering the storm, he said chieftains should jettison their greed and inordinate personal ambitions that conflict with zoning as enshrined in the party’s constitution.

George alluded to the injustice of local government distribution in the country, pointing out that Lagos State has been shortchanged.

Rejecting the inequality and injustice, he urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revisit the report of the last constitutional conference on the reconmendations on the creation of additional local governments.

    Natasha loses Senate Committee chairmanship

Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has been removed as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora.

The announcement was made on Thursday during plenary.

No official reason was given for the removal.

Natasha was immediately replaced by Senator Aniekan Bassey, who represents Akwa Ibom North-East.

The change is believed to be connected to her unresolved suspension.

Natasha was appointed chair of the Diaspora and NGOs Committee on February 4, 2025, following her earlier removal as Chair of the Senate Committee on Local Content.

Insiders said the Kogi senator actually lost her chairmanship position when she was suspended.

  • Tinubu brought Buhari’s victory in 2015, says Onoh

Tinubu brought Buhari’s victory in 2015, says Onoh

Former campaign spokesman of President Bola Tinubu in the Southeast, Dr. Josef Onoh, has knocked Boss Mustapha, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SFG), Boss Mustapha over his assertion that Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) did not make significant input in Muhammad Buhari’s emergency as President in 2015.

Mustapha, at the launch of a book written by former presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, in Abuja, disparaged the contributions of the opposition parties that merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC), remarking they brought only three million votes to add to Buhari’s 12 million votes.

Mustapha’s comment did not go well with supporters of President Tinubu who have taken to social media platforms to express their displeasure and described the former SGF as a political neophyte.

Reacting to the former SGF, Onoh, described Mustapha as an expert in chewing bitter kola but a novice in political strategy.

He said the former SGF had limited knowledge of President Tinubu’s influence, reminding him that Asiwaju’s role in the formation of the APC which wrestled power from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) cannot be wished away.

“Prior to this, Buhari’s political vehicles, such as the ANPP and CPC, lacked the national structure and southern alliances needed to challenge the PDP’s dominance. President Tinubu, as the leader of the then ACN, a party with a strong base in the South-West, spearheaded the merger of several opposition parties, including the CPC (Buhari’s party), ACN, a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and a segment of the PDP known as the “New PDP.” This merger created a formidable opposition platform capable of rivaling the PDP’s national reach at that period,” said Onoh.

Continuing, Onoh reminded Mustapha how Buhari, in spite of his core 12 million northern votes couldn’t win elections in 2003, 2007, and 2011 because of the absence of a national spread as provided by the constitution.

He emphasised that it was Tinubu’s strategic vision and political acumen that saw the APC’s formation to fruition, thus providing Buhari a broader electoral platform that enabled him leverage his voter base while gaining access to the southwest, where Tinubu had unparalleled influence.

“The Southwest, with its significant population and economic importance, particularly in Lagos, was a crucial battleground. President Tinubu’s ability to deliver votes from this region was a game-changer, as it addressed the critical shortfall in Buhari’s previous campaigns.

“In the 2015 presidential election, Buhari, running as the APC candidate, secured 15.4 million votes, defeating the then incumbent PDP candidate, former president Goodluck Jonathan, who polled 12.8 million votes.

“While Buhari’s core 12 million votes from the northern regions as touted by Boss Mustapha remained a cornerstone of his support, the additional 3.4 million votes that secured his victory were largely attributable to president Tinubu’s influence in the Southwest and other regions.

“President Tinubu’s role extended beyond vote delivery. He played a key part in the APC’s primary elections, ensuring Buhari emerged as the party’s candidate despite competition from other heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso. If Boss Mustapha doubts my submissions, I challenge him or any member of the coalition to go and verify, then face me for national debate with facts.

“President Tinubu’s continued support was crucial in maintaining the APC’s dominance in the Southwest, even amidst internal party challenges. In 2018, several prominent APC members, including Atiku, then Senate President Bukola Saraki, and 16 other senators, defected to the PDP, threatening the party’s cohesion.

“President Tinubu’s steadfast loyalty and organizational efforts ensured that the Southwest remained a reliable APC stronghold. Today I am amused to see the same characters swimming like fishes in the same pond in unity hoping to drown the fisherman but like the fate that awaits most fishes in the sea, when the fisherman comes fishing they will all end up in his net grasping for breath once they are outside water.

“May I remind Boss Mustapha that President Tinubu’s political network, including governors, local leaders, and grassroots organizations, played a critical role in voter mobilization and campaign coordination. His ability to maintain party unity in the Southwest despite defections was instrumental in securing the votes needed to meet the 25% threshold in two-thirds of Nigeria’s states, a requirement Atiku struggled to fulfill due to his weaker southern support.

“Also, beyond electoral votes, President Tinubu’s contributions included strategic planning, campaign financing, and national outreach. As a seasoned politician and political godfather in the Southwest, President Tinubu provided substantial financial resources to the APC’s campaigns in both 2015 and 2019. I dare anyone to prove me wrong, President Tinubu is alive, and if anyone is in doubt of what I’ve said, can verify from him.

“The 2015 election, described as the most expensive in African history, required significant funding for logistics, media, and voter outreach, much of which was facilitated by President Tinubu’s network. His influence also extended to negotiations with other political actors, such as the “New PDP” defectors, who bolstered the APC’s national presence.

“President Tinubu’s strategic foresight was evident in his ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex ethnic and religious dynamics.

By aligning his then ACN with Buhari’s then CPC and other parties, he created a coalition that bridged the North-South divide, a critical factor in defeating the PDP’s entrenched power. His decision to support Osinbajo as Buhari’s running mate in 2015 addressed concerns about regional and religious balance, making the APC ticket more palatable to southern voters.

“Tinubu’s leadership in forming the APC, delivering the Southwest’s votes, ensuring party unity, and providing financial and strategic support transformed Buhari’s regional popularity into a national mandate…

“Clearly, Boss Mustapha ought to know that being an expert in chewing bitter kola doesn’t make him an expert political strategist like President Tinubu,” he concluded.

The SWC emphasised that his extensive experience and expertise will not only enhance the party’s presence in Lagos State but also positively impact the community.

In his acceptance speech, Owokoniran thanked the ADC leadership and members for their warm reception.

He reaffirmed his commitment to working with the party to build a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria, focusing on advancing ADC’s principles and goals.

Owokoniran’s alignment with the ADC marks a promising advancement for the party, as his political background is expected to strengthen its presence in the area.

The ADC’s endorsement of Owokoniran and the accompanying PDP members is seen as a vital step in raising the party’s profile in Lagos State. His leadership is anticipated to play a key role in shaping the party’s future narrative and communication strategy.

  • ADC: Moro, Chinda reject coalition, say political gang-up won’t work

ADC: Moro, Chinda reject coalition, say political gang-up won’t work

Senator Abba Moro, leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the National Assembly, and House Minority Leader, Honourable Kingsley Chinda, have distanced themselves from the ongoing coalition talks within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a Facebook video, Senator Moro—who represents Benue South and is a long-time loyalist of Senator David Mark—firmly stated: “I’m not joining any coalition, I’ve not joined any coalition, I do not intend to join any coalition. I think the politics of gang-up is not a solution to our problems.”

Speaking separately with The Nation, Hon. Chinda echoed Moro’s stance, affirming his continued loyalty to the PDP. He argued that the coalition effort was fundamentally flawed and bound to fail.

“I agree with him (Senator Moro) completely. I won’t join or ask anyone to join their coalition,” Chinda said. “It won’t work—I’ve seen the litigations and internal conflicts brewing within their ranks. Their agenda is already collapsing under its own weight.”

Their statements align with a similar declaration by the Imo State chapter of the PDP, which also rejected any involvement in the ADC coalition, reaffirming its commitment to the PDP.

Senator Abba Moro, who stated that he was first elected into office under the PDP platform in 1999, explained his stand further:

“I became a member of the People’s Democratic Party in 1998, in its formative years so, I think I am qualified to see myself as a founding member of the PDP, as one of the first sets of those elected on the platform of that party.

“Precisely on December 8, 1998, local government elections were conducted across the country, and I contested, won and on May 29, 1999, I became the executive chairman of Okpokwu local government in Benue state.

At various other times, I was council chairman, either as a caretaker chairman or as an elected chairman, and I was the ALGON chairman of Benue State.

“I have come a long way with the PDP, I have never defected, never joined any other party and as I’m talking to you now, I’m a bona fide member of PDP.

“I’m not joining any coalition, I’ve not joined any coalition, I don’t intend to join any coalition, and quite frankly, I think that we should approach Nigeria with a serious mind of electing people who are prepared to govern this country for the people of Nigeria.

“I think it is inappropriate to begin to take decisions based on grievances, based on failed expectations, arising from frustrations of rising expectations, and so, today, I want to encourage all of us to utilise existing platforms to run elections.

“I know that there are some limitations, there are some concerns about some of the policies of the present administration, I know that people are hurting, I know that people think that enough has not been done.

“But I think the politics of gang up is not a solution to our problems; and so I think that if we are heading in the wrong direction, we should be able to retrace our steps and head in the right direction,” Moro stated in the video address to his supporters.

In a statement sent by the Imo state PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiaku Lancelot Ifeanyi to The Nation in Abuja, the Imo State PDP Chairman, Rt. Hon. Austine Nwachukwu, the party warned members and the general public to disregard the false narratives being peddled by disgruntled former PDP members who are hoping to destabilise the party, stressing that they will not be part of such an agenda.

“These baseless claims are the handiwork of failed politicians driven by selfish interests and personal gain; there is no coalition whatsoever, PDP remains committed to its values and principles, and will resist any attempt to undermine its integrity,” he stated.

The Imo state PDP further alleged that intelligence reports ongoing attempts by some individuals to divide the party and weaken its strength, especially in Imo State, with the unrealistic hope of gaining support for their coalition agenda.

Emphasizing that the Imo state chapter of the PDP will not succumb to any agenda that is in pursuit of a power shift to the North in 2027, they asserted that such agenda which is being secretly championed by some leaders of the ‘coalition’ clearly represents a betrayal of the PDP’s long-standing tradition of power rotation.

While reiterating that the PDP is open to welcoming new members, the statement emphasised that it would not be part of any political arrangement that compromises the party’s core principles.

Party members across Imo State were urged to remain vigilant, ignore the “false narratives,” and stay committed to ensuring the PDP’s victory in the 2027 elections.

“Together, we will ensure that PDP remains the dominant force in Imo State and Nigeria,” the statement concluded.

By-election: Igbinedion, Ikpea emerge consensus candidate

The daughter of Chief Esama Igbinedion, Omosede Igbinedion, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the Ovia Federal Constituency seat in the August 16 by-election.

Also, Hon Joe Ikpea was picked as the consensus candidate for the Senate seat in Edo Central.

Omosede’s consensus candidacy was adopted after a meeting presided over by Edo Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa.

Idahosa, a former member of the House of Representatives, said Omosede’s adoption was a product of extensive consultation and unity of purpose among APC family members in Ovia.

He said the party was determined to win the seat in the by-election.

“This is not just about filling a vacant seat. It is about giving the good people of Ovia quality, experienced, and people-oriented representation.

  • APC dismisses Oyebanji, Fayemi’s defection plan

APC dismisses Oyebanji, Fayemi’s defection plan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has dismissed the claim that Governor Biodun Oyebanji and former Governor Kayode Fayemi are planning to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, the party’s publicity secretary, Segun Dipe, described the reports as “sheer recklessness” and “mindless propaganda.”

Dipe emphasised that the governor and Fayemi are reliable leaders of the party and have no intention of leaving the APC for the ADC.

The APC spokesman noted that the duo has been instrumental in building the APC in Ekiti State and has invested their time, energy, and resources into the party.

He said, “These are our two leaders with no history of disloyalty to the ruling party. They are not turncoats in our party. For anyone to cook up such a lie that they are porting to another party is playing dirty politics and reckless propaganda, which should not be taken seriously by anyone.”

“Along with the first executive Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, the trio is consolidating our party in the State, and anyone not queuing behind them is not known to the Party.

“Are we thinking of APC in Ekiti without an Otunba, a JKF or a BAO? Not at all. Could we have maintained our stronghold of APC being the living and the ruling party in Ekiti State without the trio of Adebayo, Fayemi and Oyebanji? I doubt it.

“How reasonable is it for anyone to think that Fayemi, as the master builder of the house, would abandon it for a rented apartment, or Oyebanji, as the Number One dweller in the house, would go seeking refuge elsewhere?

“This is thoughtless and mindless of the rumour mongers, whose intentions are still unknown to us”, Dipe said.

Dipe, therefore, urged the public to disregard the false reports and instead focus on the development of the state.

  • Coalition, an association of strange bedfellows, says Adelakun

Coalition, an association of strange bedfellows, says Adelakun

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Chief Kunle Adelakun, has dismissed a newly formed political coalition in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as an association of “strange bedfellows” who meant nothing good for the country.

Adelakun, who is the son of Busari Adelakun, the late strongman of Ibadan politics in the Second Republic, popularly known as ‘Eruobodo’, made this assertion while speaking with newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday.

The former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar-led National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement, with some aggrieved APC leaders, last week adopted the ADC as a platform to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Since this announcement was made, a couple of opposition politicians, especially from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party and others have declared support for ADC.

Adelakun, however, questioned the credibility of key figures in the coalition, asserting that the past actions of the likes of former Governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Rauf Aregbesola, and Rotimi Amaechi have contributed little to Nigeria’s democratic progress.

He accused the ADC promoters of reviving discredited political models and mocked the alliance as a gathering of “strange bedfellows” bent on continuing their hold on power.

“Nigerians are not on amnesia, and even if we are, the dose is already expired from our system.

“Nigerians are not fooled. These are the same individuals who held sway for decades and left the country in a sorry state,” Eruobodo said.

Adelakun said that that those behind the coalition lacked the political weight and moral authority to challenge the growing support base of Tinubu across Nigeria.

“At a time when the nation is witnessing bold reforms and sustained infrastructure investments under President Tinubu, it is unfortunate that certain individuals seek to distract Nigerians with recycled rhetoric,” the APC chieftain said.

He added that the landmark achievements of the Tinubu administration had rekindled hope in national development.

“The economy, though challenged by inherited deficits, is showing signs of recovery through targeted interventions such as fuel subsidy removal savings redirected to key sectors, palliatives to states, and aggressive investments in food security.

“The recently passed Tax Reform Bill represents a major step forward, optimising revenue collection, reducing leakages, and enable more sustainable investments in infrastructure and social services

“So, no amount of political meetings or emergency alliances among failed politicians can stop the will of the people. Tinubu is on course for 2027, and his achievements are the loudest campaign.

“The irony of all this gang up is that after the 2027 general elections, the same people would still find their way back into the ruling All Progressives Congress,” Eruobodo said.

He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for restoring sanity to the nation’s capital and his commitment, leadership skills and unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration

  • I’ll pursue responsive leadership, infrastructural renewal in Amuwo Odofin – PLS

I’ll pursue responsive leadership, infrastructural renewal in Amuwo Odofin – PLS

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area on Wednesday held its mega rally, affirming its readiness to retain control of the council and reaffirming grassroots support for its chairmanship candidate, Prince Lanre Sanusi, fondly known as PLS.

The rally, which was held in Festac Town, the administrative and commercial hub of the LGA, drew a diverse crowd of party faithful, stakeholders, market leaders, artisans, youth associations, and residents from all eleven wards.

The event, described by many as a show of the party’s enduring strength in Amuwo Odofin, also served as a platform for Sanusi to articulate his vision for the council and reassure constituents of his preparedness for the task ahead.

“I stand before you not just as a candidate,” he said, “but as your brother, your son, your friend, and a servant ready to work. This campaign is not about me. It is about us, about our shared future. It is a movement driven by the call to service.”

Sanusi assured the gathering that his administration, if elected, would be anchored on responsive leadership, infrastructural renewal, youth empowerment, and social development.

He highlighted issues such as the rehabilitation of roads, support for women-led businesses, establishment of vocational centres, and environmental protection as key areas of focus.

“We are not here to make empty promises,” he declared. “We are here to restore dignity to leadership. I may not be perfect, but I am present, I am committed, and I am ready.”

The high-profile rally was graced by notable APC leaders, including Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, a member of the party’s influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC), who described Sanusi as “courageous, capable, and prepared for the responsibilities of governance.”

“This is a man who has been tested. He knows what to do and how to get things done. Amuwo Odofin will be in safe hands under his leadership,” Obanikoro noted.

Also present was Alhaja Memunat Ajao, the APC Apex Leader in Amuwo Odofin, whose presence further reinforced the weight of party unity and grassroots mobilisation.

“We have put this election in God’s hands,” she said calmly. “But we must also remember that when the people vote for you, it is a trust. When you get there, do good. Remember those who brought you in,” she advised.

Outgoing Council Chairman, Engr. Dr. Valentine Oluseyi Buraimoh described the election as “a pivotal moment to prove a point ahead of 2027.”

He highlighted the work done by the APC-led administration in the council and praised Sanusi as the right candidate to consolidate on those achievements.

“We have gone ward by ward, street by street. We have shown what leadership can do. This is not just another election. It is a statement of continuity, of stability,” Buraimoh said.

Also lending his voice was the APC LGA Chairman, Hon. Ayodele Olusegun Ogumbiyi, who described the rally as a clear testament that “Amuwo Odofin remains a stronghold of the APC.”

“Today, you have seen it for yourself. Our people are with us. And they are with Prince Lanre Sanusi.”

Hon. Kate Omolola Banjoko, of Ward A1, described Sanusi as “a prepared leader with clear plans for the community.” She urged residents to vote for “continuity and progress.”

The APC’s dominance in Amuwo Odofin is expected to be tested by opposition parties such as the Labour Party (LP) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, Wednesday’s rally showed a party in sync with its base, united behind a candidate it considers credible and competent.
