  • ‘What life has taught me at 60’

Senior Pastor of Christ Living Apostolic Ministry (CLAM) Lagos, Apostle Wole Oladiyun celebrated his 60th birthday and 21 years anniversary of the church last week. He spoke with newsmen on the journey so far, national issues and how the church can contribute to the polity. Olusegun Raphael was there

IT is your 60th birthday and 21years anniversary of your ministry. How do you feel?

I want everybody to know it is by the grace, mercy and favour of God. I want to appreciate the great and men and women of God who been working with me in the ministry for the past 21 years. The executive heads for different portfolios in the ministry, including the Chief medical director, Clam medical arm, Soteria Maternity and hospital, Dr. (Mrs.) Moyosore Makinde.

What would a man say, when God has made success out of his life? Someone who finds himself in a family, where everyone wakes up in the morning by 5am and  go to one old Christ Apostolic church in Ile Oluji to pray.

You carry your portmanteau on your head, which is today’s backpack and trekked to school. On your way back, you passed your father’s workshop, you entered prayed and later go and greet your father.

Someone who knew Jesus early in life. You have been trained to talk to God first before your parents.  Between ages 7 and 10, you are conscripted into dry fasting on mountaintop of the late Pastor Ayo Babalola with only well water to break your fast. Psalm16: 8, which says lines are fallen in pleasant for me and I have a goodly heritage is my testimony.

The foundation of anything matters a lot. By the grace of God I am an Engineer and I have been privileged to build houses all over this country and my engineering dexterity still stands.

I grew up in the family of seven, the second child but first boy. My late father was an elder in the church and leader of the then prayer band of the late Ayo Babalola while my late mum was just a petty trader, Mama Onigarri.

My father died when I was 11 and we saw the ancestors of suffering. But by providence, my father’s cousin who was a diplomat came home and took me to Ibadan. He has another brother who always saw me with my Lacombe.

He asked me if I wanted to go to school. I responded that I want to be an engineer like him. I was enrolled in school and studied hard, eventually I won a scholarship. I finished secondary school and went to study Civil Engineering at the then University of Ile –ife now Obafemi Awolowo Univerisy.  I later did my Masters at Netherland business school.  I am highly indebted to the Akintomides and the Adewakuns.

I have always known that I have a calling because God used to appear to me even at 7. My father took me to a pastor who confirmed it but he requested that I should be educated for the betterment of the call.

I served in Ramat Polytechnic, Borno State. After my  NYSC I wanted to join the police but I met one man, Mr. Mshelia who asked me why and I told him I wanted to work in the works department to tackle injustice. He said to me that was not a good reason to join police. So,  I decided to face my engineering.

I later travelled to Germany briefly for 9 months but the Lord told me I can’t fulfill my destiny there. I returned home and founded a company. I ventured into other businesses like supplying skimmed powder for production companies, spare parts, pharmaceutical products.

I was a member of Full Gospel businessmen fellowship. I was ordered back to CAC. I repented because God said he wants to use me. I later joined Deeper Life. I also served under Pastor Anayo Iloputaife. I was with Pastor Wole Aboderin of Faith Bible Church. Due to my passion for engineering, I was struggling with the call but after God packed the businesses up for three years, I surrendered. I was sent forth by Pastor Aboderin.

I got the name of the ministry after serious prayer through the inspiration of the  story of the woman by the well in John  4verse 4-26  where Jesus told her if you had given me water I would have given you ever flowing spring. It is an Apostolic ministry, which started April, 2 1998 with monthly revival and vigil at Dansol School.

In the last 21 years what would say are your challenges?

When things are going smoothly I am afraid but because I am connected to the source he gives me solution at every crossroads. I hear from Him expressly. But I would say initially I was not a good human manager.  When I tell you we must get this thing done in seven days, I forget that we have different temperaments but I have been able to understand now and manage people well.

    What are your landmarks?

For landmarks, Hebrew 4: 15- 16 emphasised four major acts of God that have been working for us mercy, grace, favour and help. If you are counting ministries that are still doing what is heartbeat of God, soul winning in Africa CLAM will be among the first 10.

I am an addicted soul winner. For the past 20 years our evangelical arm CLAMGO has not taken any kobo from anybody and we have been to villages that others dread for land deliverance and also to give the people succor.

We introduced medical ministration 8 years ago mobilising medical workers to do free surgeries. We started in Ile –oluji. My wife and I built children hospital fully equipped that children should be treated free of charge.

The former governor Olusegun Mimiko dedicated it. In Lagos, we have a 56 -bed CLAM Soteria hospital where we have done four brain operations successfully. An operation that should cost N2m in India was done for N900, 000.

God helped me to do these through the tithes and offering coming to the church. So people should stop emphasising the ills of the church. Where you have counterfeit, there are also originals. We also have Soteria farms where 4000 youths are presently working situated in between Foursquare camp and the border of Ibadan. We have 50 hectares of land for tomatoes and Ogbono plantation. We want to model it after the Songhai farm. The people are living there. There will be school and hospital and all these from tithe and offerings.

We are also working on CLAM soccer club with a full time coach. There is also Wole Oladiyun foundation through which over 60 people have benefitted from our scholarships. We are presently training a female pilot in Philippine. The latest is the prayer parliament.com that God gave me where people can log in and get prayer interventions.

We have a vocational centre where miscreants are trained in skills, free of charge. We give them food, and the word of God.

What lessons has life taught you?

Life has taught me to fear God. That for everything you achieved it is by the sovereign grace of God.  To help humanity, be simple, once you have a simple life it is easier to maintain. We brought nothing to this world and we are not going to take anything.

Life has taught me to judge people less because we are created differently. It has taught me that creation is a mirage, an illusion. What you give is what you receive. It has taught me to smile at all times and be myself. Everything in life is seasonal no one rules forever. Have focus and be patience. Have eternity in view.

To be a dutiful husband to my wife who has been patient with me over the years. She is a fantastic, great woman of few words. She gave me free ambience to operate.

Is there anything you want to do differently now?

I have one ambition to go back to university to lecture in engineering and management free. I want to raise more people and for CLAM Prayer centres to be at designated places all over the world.

Are you satisfied with way the country is having seen the independence and post- independence era?

God has spoken prophetically that other countries will come to us. Nigeria is easy to manage if we get some things right. When we profile Nigeria from the time of the late Sarduna of Sokoto to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo, we discovered so many states are sick, so many states are moribund.

What they do is just to go to the centre to take. I am trusting God that by the time are through with the national conference, we should focus on the six geo-political zones. There is none of these zones that do not have mineral resources. For example in Ogun, we look at Iwopin, Ilaje coastal areas. Ikale has deepest harbour created by God meaning big ship can berth

There is Olokoola free trade zone should be developed, the bitumen in Agbabu should be developed. We have been importing $ 4.7b worth of bitumen into this country whereas we are seated on bitumen. Underneath the bitumen, we have stock fish after Venezuela ours is the second. We must have the political will to work on the bitumen. It will give us jobs and our crave for dollars will be low.

Ekiti is seated on minerals. These should be brought out. The steel rolling mills in Ajaokuta where people are stealing trillions of dollars over the years should be worked on. We must have the political will to develop Tin at Jos, coal at Enugu.

South Africa is generating energy through coal. The federal character should be removed. For our national team for instance, we need 12 players. If the good 12 are from Borno, let them represent us. Don’t put someone from Ondo, who is less qualified.

The issue of federal character is choking us. Many people representing us are round pegs in square holes. Leadership is a major problem because we lack the political will. We must come to a roundtable look at our grievances and ways to proffer solution into them.

  • The supremacy of faith!

Welcome to another impactful week! I hope you were blessed by last week teaching. This week, we shall focus on: The Supremacy of Faith!

From scriptures, we discover that we engage in faith to tap into divine virtues, which in turn enhance our value. The Bible says: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report (Hebrews 11:1-2). Also, our vision can never deliver beyond the level of faith we are operating in. Hence, the beauty and colour of every vision is a function of the quality of faith that is employed. Therefore, without faith, our vision has no substance because it is faith that defines the substance of our vision. Every act of God in our lives is only realisable via faith and as long as our faith is on fire, we remain on flight and also in command of things happening around us. Thus, it is to us according to our faith, not according to our vision (Matthew 9:29). So, if our faith is down, our life and destiny will be down.

What, Then, is the Supremacy of Faith?

    • Faith Engages the Word for Performance: It engages the Word of God in order to enforce the delivery of our destiny and desires. The Bible records about Mary: …Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her (Luke 1:38).Sometimes, it may not be convenient for us but if it is commanded, we must engage in it because that’s the only way to where we are going and it is what determines the happenings in our lives. That is what makes faith a vital force that gets the job done. As long as our faith is in place, we remain in command over the issues of life.

Faith is A Spiritual Force: Faith is neither a psychological nor philosophical force; it is a spiritual force. It is not an intellectual issue either; it is a spiritual virtue that operates within the spirit of man not in his head. As it is written: For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:10). Thus, whatever is working contrary to our inheritance in Christ, faith can stop it instantly. For instance, the woman with the issue of blood had her faith intact and her health was restored immediately (Mark 5:25-34).

Faith is a Spiritual Chemistry: It is the spiritual chemistry with which we quench the oppositions, clear obstacles and access our possessions. The Bible says: For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith (Mark 11:23). Every time faith is at work, a spiritual connection is established and that connection provokes the flow of virtue from God. That virtue flows to enhance our value.

Faith is A Living Force: It is a living force, drawn from the living Word to produce living proofs. That woman drew from Jesus, the Living Word, and a living proof was produced. Faith is not just believing that God can do something; it is being moved to do something to prove that we believe. When we are moved to act on what God commands, He is committed to perform. So, faith is an act. For it is written: But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6). Therefore, faith is the only way to move God in our direction and the only way to stop the devil from molesting us (Ephesians 6:16).

Faith is Hard Work: Faith is no cheap talk; faith is hard work. It is written: For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief (Hebrews 4:10-11). It requires a form of labour. We don’t wish for faith but work at faith. Faith does not answer to wishes; it answers to workings, that is, working with the Word of God. Whether it is conventional faith or supernatural faith, all forms of faith draw from our Word bank or reservoir. The things on our inside are what faith draws from; it has to be there before faith can draw. The Bible says: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17; see also 2 Peter 1:5).

Faith is a Great Profession: Faith is no mere confession; it is a great profession. As it is written: Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised (Hebrews 10:23). Profession here connotes definite skills. Thus, it requires skills to maximise its benefits (Hebrews 5:12-14).

In summary, faith is an asset of inestimable value, an unstoppable force which taps into the omnipotence of God, quenches all the fiery darts of the devil, addresses all satanic assaults and commits the integrity of divinity.  However, you cannot experience the supremacy of faith unless you are born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I know I am born again! • Free shopping spree at Christian women’s 6th anniversary

The 6th annual conference of Women of Wisdom tagged the love party holds on Saturday, April 13.

Founded by Folasade Murtala, Women of Wisdom also known as W.O.W, the interdenominational ministry was commissioned to help women in their pursuit to discover purpose and build a profitable life.

The vision of the organisation is to build builders, train trainers and raise women of prayer and purpose.

Tagged WOW free shopping spree, Murtala said it started “started as a result of a leading I had. The instruction is to bring women together, meet their basic needs and tell them about the love of Christ.”

She added: “This event is all about showing love to the womenfolk, especially the needy, we provide them and their children with basic needs such as food stuff, clothes and shoes etc. We remind them of the love of God.

“A lot of women are going through challenges in the quietness of their homes. Some are struggling with self-esteem, lack of provision for their children and many other serious life issues.

“It’s a way of ministering to women letting them know that we care about them and for their children. It’s actually a family thing, even though the men are not included in the giveaway, but by extension, the man is also a beneficiary because we know whatever a woman gets, is for the whole family.

“Last year over 800 women and children benefited from our free shopping program, and this year our target is one thousand people.

“The response last year was awesome, people were blessed, lives were touched and generally, WOW made a great impact in so many families.”

Even though the free shopping is targeted at women, men are not left out in this year`s conference as there are other segments profitable to the spiritual, physical, financial, health and marital fruitfulness of both male and female attendees, organisers stated.

The theme of the party is “All-round fruitfulness”. Venue is The Kings Chambers 42, Association Avenue, Ilupeju Lagos.

    Time is from 10:00 am.

The guest speaker for this event is Bishop Francis Wale Oke of the Sword of the Spirit Ministry, Ibadan Oyo State.

  • Leadership tussle rocks 188-old African Church

If the leadership crisis rocking the African Church is not resolved soon, the 188- year- old church may disintegrate following threats by some provinces in the Niger Delta region to break away.

It was gathered that provinces in Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states have already given the indication to the Arch Cathedral in Lagos to secede if the current Primate, Dr. Emmanuel Udofia is not allowed to complete his tenure.

The current primate of the church, Dr. Udofia is said to be under severe harassments and threats by the Western provinces for him to vacate his position as he turns 60 years in May.

Udofia, who was weekend received in a very colourful ceremony at St Stephen’s Cathedral of the church  in Uyo, has been asked by the laity and clergy to temporarily relocate to Uyo until the crisis is over, it was learnt.

His life and that of his family members are said to be under threat by some parishioners of the church in Lagos, which necessitated the call for his relocation to Uyo.

Vice lay president of Warri Diocese, Mr Ezekiel Okorode, who spoke at Dr Udofia’s reception in Uyo, said the indignities to which the Western Provinces of the church had subjected the primate were in a way bringing victory to Calabar and Rivers provinces.

“Today is a day of victory for our provinces. We have taken a step that will not be easy to reverse. We have told those bishops from the West to go back to their people.

“They don’t like us and so we can’t like them. The Western provinces must retrace their steps and apologise else it is backward never; forward ever,” Okorode said.

He explained that if Udofia, the only primate of African Church who is a non -Yoruba in the 118-year life of the church could be humiliated by the Western provinces, there was no basis for their continuous pretence to be together.

The legal adviser of Calabar Province, Justice Ezekiel Enang, said the two provinces would stand by the General Council decision of the church that the current primate should retire at 65 years after which the new rule of retirement at 60 would take effect.

The medical adviser of the Calabar Diocese, Dr Nathaniel

Adiakpan, expressed gratitude to God for preserving the life of the primate for him to return home alive, saying that was the most important thing.

“Injustice is what is playing out in African Church today. The same people who were bombarded us with calls to help them attend certain positions in the church only a few years ago are now the ones causing disunity.

“If Dr Udofia doesn’t enjoy the support of African Church Worldwide, no other primate will enjoy our support,” Adiakpan stressed.

However, the embattled primate, Dr Udofia said he had not relocated to Uyo because he still considered himself the Primate of African Church Worldwide as such he would go the arch cathedral anytime he feels like.

But he explained that it was necessary to pray for God’s intervention in the crisis as he would not want his tenure to be credited with infamous history of the beginning of fragmentation of the hitherto unified African Church.

“I don’t want the Yorubas living with us to leave in tears. They are

not the cause of my leaving Lagos. I’m still the Primate of African

Church for now because we have decided to seek peace.

“We want everyone to pray for the church. If we allow this to happen, it will affect the entire church.

“As a church, we would have been better than this but for unnecessary obstacles we bring upon ourselves.”

Udofia, whose message was anchored on the Romans 8: 28-39, said that all things work together for to those who love the Lord.

  • Abina emphasises soul-winning as GOFAMINT dedicates Ogba district headquarters

The General Overseer of the Gospel Faith Mission International (GOFAMINT) Dr. Elijah Abina has emphasised soul winning remains the fundamental for growth of the body of Christ.

He spoke on Sunday while decidating the Ogba district headquarters in Lagos.

Speaking on “That my house may be filled”, Abina, who was represented by the church’s General Secretary, Pastor Femi Omowumi, charged members to go out and win souls by evangelising.

He said they must be involved in bringing more people to worship “in the new headquarter church dedicated today so that the church will not be empty.”

According to him: “ It is something to build a befitting edify and is another thing to go out and invite people, bring people to the church and also bring people to the kingdom of God.

“It will be a waste of resources in the building of the church if the members of the church fail in their responsibility to win souls”.

The cleric emphasised that they should have at least 2 to 3 shifts in their Sunday service, saying it will also go a long way in contributing to the growth and development of the church.

He also pointed out youths should portray themselves as good ambassadors wherever they are, and that, as a church, the leaders should ensure that the youths are given opportunity to conduct the church service at least, once in a month to groom them for leadership in the future.

The District pastor, Mr. Francis Omoniyi, said that the journey completing the church has not been easy but God has been with them and taken charge to the final stage of complement.

The Resident Pastor, Mr. Kehinde Ogundare, added the church is prepared in the vision of evangelism as equipment have been acquired, including gospel tracts to launch out in bringing souls to the church.

The vision of the new church building was birthed in 2011 by the then Resident Pastor, Mr. Francis Omoniyi (now the District Pastor).

The vision became a reality in 2014 under the leadership of Pastor Adeniyi Kuroloja, who was then the Resident Pastor, with Pastor Joseph Olorunsomo as the Chairman, Building Committee.

The project was completed under the leadership of Pastor Ogundare, the current Resident Pastor.

  • Daystar church donates N10m to conflict victims

Daystar Christian Centre has donated N10million to United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in support of victims of conflicts in Africa.

The donation was made on Tuesday at the Daystar Christian Centre in Lagos.

Senior Pastor of the church, Sam Adeyemi, said that the donation was to support UNHCR in helping people forced to flee their homes because of conflict, violence or persecution in Africa.

He said it was the church’s commitment toward restoring the resilience of families forced to flee across the continent.

According to him: “When people flee their homes and leave everything they own behind, their needs become critical and their coping mechanisms compromised.

“Without help, they cannot access shelter, or even cooking utensils – let alone education and healthcare.

“Some arrive with severe trauma after facing unimaginable ordeals before and during flights.”

He added: “We need to do something like Jesus Christ did; he provided food for the hungry, he touch sick people physical and heals their sicknesses.

“So our church (Daystar Christian Centre) has been involved in practical interventions in the community, building schools for children, providing bags for families that cannot afford, school fees for family that cannot afford, hospitals bills etc.”

He also pointed out the church has been involved in community development projects since inception.

“We at Daystar are happy to support UNHCR’s work on the ground to provide emergency relief and support to our forcibly displaced brothers and sisters,” Adeyemi said.

He also challenged the church community to tackle humanitarian challenges around them like Jesus would have done.

The Assistant Communications Officer, UNHCR Nigeria, Mr. Gabriel Adeyemo, said the donation, which was about $30,000 was handed over to the UNHCR team in Lagos by the church in Lagos.

Mr. Jose Antonio-Canhandula, UNHCR’s Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS appreciated the church for the donation.

He said the donation would be used to provide life-saving emergency assistance to families forced to flee their homes.

“Nigeria is unfortunately affected by this phenomenon, not only in North-East, but also the Middle Belt.

“Many displaced persons do not have where to sleep; no access to water; and access to healthcare facilities is very limited.

“They do not participate in the economy and cannot fend for themselves,” Antonio-Canhandula said.

He said the commitment of Daystar Centre to help uprooted families was truly appreciated and also demonstrated the spirit of sharing.

He said that the “centre had paved the way for other civic organisations to support our brothers and sisters fleeing due to conflict.”

Antonio-Canhandula noted that the world’s displaced persons had reached 68.5 million, adding an unprecedented level of over 25 million of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He said that 76 per cent of the 68.5 million were women and children.

Mrs. Needa Jehu-Mazou, the Head of UNHCR’S private sector partnerships in Africa, said Nigeria is a very hospitable country and as foster in our entire plans for refugees problems over the year.

She also said “what Daystar has demonstrated today is phenomenal, really ground breaking.

“It is the first faith- based organisation in Africa to throw its weight and align publicly with the UN and commit funds to it.

“9% of all our income comes from the private sector globally. It was 423 million dollars last year and I’m very proud to count Nigerians in Daystar Church in particular among this donors.

“We also have incredible other donors in Nigeria like 2 baba who support us immensely, financially and so many other ways,” she stressed.

  • Engaging the unlimited power of faith for settlement!

Welcome to April! I have no doubt that God gave every one of us diverse eye-opening encounters with His Word all through the month of March, 2019 and I believe that these encounters will remain lifetime assets for every one of us, in Jesus’ name! All through this month, we shall explore the subject of faith, the supernatural force which guarantees our victory over sicknesses, diseases, poverty and wickedness. Therefore, get set for an impartation of the Spirit of faith via the teachings of the month. This week, we shall examine: Engaging the Unlimited Power of Faith for Settlement!

We understand from Scriptures that our settlement as believers is crucial to God. That’s why the Bible says: But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you (1Peter 5:10).  Every prophetic word from God is designed for fulfilment. As it is written: And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord (Luke 1:45). This is because prophecies are not psychological predictions, but the unveiling of divine plans. We must understand that God speaks according to His resources and not our scarcity. He speaks according to His integrity and not our fallibility. He also speaks according to His size and His unlimited capacity to make it happen (Isaiah 55:11; Numbers 23:19; Deuteronomy 18:22; Haggai 2:8; Psalm 50:9-11). In addition, it is important to know that only God’s hand can perform whatever He says. However, without our faith, we cannot take delivery. It is written: The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand (Isaiah 14:24).

    What, Then, is Faith?

    • Faith is a Spiritual Engraftment of Humanity into Divinity Thereby Commanding Supernatural Feats: For instance, when the woman with the issue of blood grafted herself to Jesus Christ through her faith, she tapped into His virtue and the flow of blood ceased. Similarly, when we engage our faith, we are grafted into God and become partakers of His divine nature, thereby commanding divine authority over the issues of life (Romans 11:19-23).

We must recognise that the Bible is a book of covenants and God’s covenant with man in Scriptures is binding as long as the earth remains (Jeremiah 33:20-22; Psalm 89:34). However, we must understand that it is our faith in the settled Word of God that guarantees our settlement in life (1 Peter 5:8-10; Psalm 119:89).

Having established that faith is the covenant force that guarantees our settlement, we must also know that God’s covenant is based on well defined terms and sealed with an oath to deliver. As such, we must believe and engage these terms to commit God’s integrity to perform (Isaiah 34:16).

What are the Terms of the Covenant of Settlement?

    • We Must Fully Return to God: Until we return to our covenant walk with God, it is not our turn to be settled (Malachi 3:7). For instance, life was a miserable adventure for the prodigal son until he returned. When he did, he was settled and his dignity was restored. Also, until Judah returned in the days of King Asa, she was not settled. However, upon return, God gave Judah all-round rest (Luke 15:17-24; 2Chronicles 15:3-6; 11-15). In addition, we must understand that being away from God is a curse (Psalm 16:4). This is because we serve a jealous God, Who cannot stand double dealings (Exodus 34:13; James 1:6-8).
    • We Must be Planted in the House of the Lord: Zion is the Church of Christ and our covenant place of settlement (Obadiah 1:17; Hebrews 12:22-24; Psalm 84:4-7; 132:13-18). Again, when we are planted in the house of God, we are ordained to flourish in all areas. However, it is important to note that God has an appointed place of worship for every believer and until we locate and abide there, our settlement is not guaranteed (Psalm 92:12-15; 2 Samuel 7:10; Deuteronomy 12:13-14).
    • We Must Make a Covenant to Serve God: Serving God indeed and in truth commits Him to our settlement. It is when we serve God and the interest of His Kingdom that He adds to us what others are dying to get (Matthew 6:33; 2 Chronicles 15:1-4/12-15; Joshua 24:15; Deuteronomy 30:19; Exodus 23:25-26; Job 36:11). Remember, only workers are entitled to wages. Therefore, we should not just watch others serve God but engage wholeheartedly and excitedly in Kingdom service, and watch God deliver our settlement testimonies (Matthew 10:10; Luke 10:7; 1 Timothy 5: 18).
    • We Must Pray for our Desired Settlement as Men and Women Did in Bible Days: From several scriptural references, we understand that God established the altar of prayer as the altar of settlement. For instance, when Jacob, Jabez, Hannah, Blind Bartimaeus and the Canaanite Woman prayed in faith for their settlement, the Bible says that God heard and settled them immediately. This simply means that we are only entitled to receive what we ask for in faith (James 4:2; Genesis 32:24-28; 1 Chronicles 4:9-10; 1 Samuel 1:13-19; Mark 10:46-52; Matthew 15:13-28).
    • Raise an Altar of Sacrifice: We can also enforce our settlement by rearing an altar of sacrifice as prompted by the Spirit of God. For instance, when Noah offered a sacrifice to God after the flood, God averted the curse and settled humanity. Again, when David reared an altar of sacrifice as instructed by God, the plague ceased (Psalm 126:1-6; Genesis 8:20-22; 2 Samuel 24:18-25). Therefore, whenever we receive a prompting of the Holy Spirit to rear an altar of sacrifice, we should dive into it in faith, because therein lies our settlement.

In conclusion, God has an agenda of settlement for us but without our faith, we can never access it; and faith cannot be exercised unless we are born again. • Daystar church gives UNHCR N10m for conflict victims

He added: “We need to do something like Jesus Christ did; he provided food for the hungry, he touch sick people physical and heals their sicknesses”.

“So our church (Daystar Christian Centre) has been involved in practical interventions in the community, building schools for children, providing bags for families that cannot afford, school fees for family that cannot afford, hospitals bills etc.”

He also pointed out the church has been involved in community development project since inception.

“It is the first faith- based organisation in Africa to throw it weight and align publicly with the UN and commit funds to it.

  • ‘Why government, church must empower women’

Senior Pastor Fountain of Life Church, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, spoke with Omolara Akintoye on the Discovery for women outreach he founded over 20 years ago, which has become a rallying point for the empowerment of women. Excerpts:

What do you have to say about politics in the nation?

Politics today is fine at least we see more people getting interested, including the youth and the women. They may not make marks now but the interest is building. I believe we are in a positive direction of course.

Then another thing is that we need to pray for our politicians and that there will be unity in Nigeria. That it does not matter who gets there but the fear of God and love of brethren should be uppermost in their minds. If we don’t see these two qualities in a man or woman, then they are not qualified to govern us.

What should be the role of women in nation building?

When your home is stable then the nation is stable. But when homes are not stable, there will be problems. There is no future because they will raise vagabonds so the women must be equipped. Yes I’m interested in my children. I stay with them and I oversee what they do.

But much more, my wife and I could remember when our children were growing up. Some were trained here and some abroad. I’ll call them once a week but my wife (of blessed memory) will call them every day. So most of the things I didn’t know about them she knew everything.

We must educate the women. Mind you a woman that is not educated can only take the child as far as she has.

What inspired the discovery for women outreach?

First, it was an inspiration. Then second, while I was growing up I saw the way my father handled my mother. They didn’t have much and they were not also highly educated but they were able to complement each other.

My mother was such a strong woman. She put her hands into everything that could sustain the home while my father went to work. Then I asked myself what if the two were better educated?

So I made up my mind to put in my very best to sustain my marriage. That is why if you could recall my late wife, not only was she empowered, she also empowered others.

Even my current wife is doing similar things and my daughter as well. So we have quite a number of women in the church who are very strong. I love to see strong women.

What is Discovery for Women all about?

It has been ongoing: It is aimed at encouraging women, reminding them of the reasons for their existence. A woman is created to be a helpmate for man. So the woman was created adequately to provide the support that the man needs and to have dominion here on earth.

Even the United Nations has realised that women are not being given the needed attention. You want to change the society, you want to stabilise the economy, then educate the woman because that will in turn educate their children as well as nurturing their children.

So that is why we give a lot of attention to the women. What we do is to help them be the best they can be, supporting humanity and making humanity to do what God has called us to do here on earth.

What will be different with this year’s edition?

This rally is tagged New Possibilities: Never believe that because your life is defined by ebbs and flows and usually when you get to the ebbs there is tendency for you to get stuck. But the good news is that you don’t have to get stuck, you can have a continuous flow in Christ.

So we want to encourage people that if you experience setbacks, disappointment or things are not measuring up as planned, this usually truncates a lot of people’s dreams and drive for the future. We don’t want that for our women, even though they suffer setbacks. Ours is to encourage and equip them adequately with all that they need to know.

At the end of the programme what kind of women do you expect to see?

We expect to see women who will rise above challenges of the moment, not just rising above the challenges but also carrying the children along and community as well. Take for instance Rwanda, in the beginning of the genocide it is amazing to discover that it was the women who decided that they with revive their country.

For the first time they have a National Assembly dominated by women and today talk of development and progress in Africa, you want to point to Rwanda. That is what women are created for: fill in where there are gaps, help the man to realise his stands again to forge ahead. So the man goes fighting, the woman stays back to stabilise things. So the woman is a true help meet.

What Nigeria has to do is go give her people proper education. In the North, especially the women otherwise the problem that is perennial in North will persist. Our women need proper education.

Take for instance where villages were attacked by terrorists in the North. The men go to fight once they are gone but the women are left behind with the children. You want to preserve posterity, want to project into the future, develop and advance, empower the woman.

Every woman should be empowered. She should be able to stand for herself and by herself before she even gets married. So when she is married, she is empowered in all areas, submitting to her husband. The two are one and they have a formidable front.

Then you can imagine the future of their products and their children. Unlike now that with the exception of very few of them, most Nigerian women are just subservient, which is very bad. They are being used as baby factories but when a woman is educated they will know that they are not baby- making machines.

She has her life and she has her future. These are the kinds of teachings that we give them in the course of the programme. Take hold of yours from a biblical point of view. Deborah, for instance, when the nation had completely lost direction, Deborah stood up and began to lead her people. So you begin to understand why God says a man needs a true helpmeet.

Yes the man needs a helper but any plan for the men as well?

Oh yes we have ‘Discovery for Men’ and our first rally for this year is being held this March. We have been running this programme for over 20 years. Yes it is important that while you are talking to the women, we also need to talk to our men as well.

As a matter of fact  we have two rallies which will be organised in the church, then we are taking it to the communities to encourage men who are already trained, to rise up and nurture other men. Men needs to be encouraged because they get easily discouraged much more than women.

What is the church doing to ensure that government empowers women as well?

Well, we do our best in the sense that we advertise our programmes and also collaborate with government as much as possible. For instance, we have a foundation where we reach out to young girls that are battered and abused.

In fact, most of them were sent to us from Alausa, here in Lagos. Also we have the Fountain Initiative, where we empower women in Business. We also take off men, women and children under the bridge to empower them and reunite them with their family members.

Today we have success stories of many of them that have graduated from the universities through the church scholarship programme and some are still in school.

We also partner with UNESCO and through the Lagos State government we go to prisons, providing men and women with advocacy programme for them not to lose hope while in prison and when they come out of prison, some of them come back to us and we do all we could to re-integrate them properly into the society by empowering them all round.
