THE General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has said Nigeria will experience pleasant surprises this year.
He appealed to Nigerians to remain hopeful and patient.
Pastor Adeboye spoke on Sunday at a Divine Surprise Special Service organised by RCCG, Rivers of Life Parish, Alagbado, Lagos.
He noted that complaining and murmuring would not solve problems.
“We must continue to trust God who alone can turn our sorrows into joy, poverty to wealth, and sickness to wholeness. No matter our past or our presence condition that looks so depressing, we must never give up as God is still able and powerful to turn things around as we pray in faith to him alone,” Pastor Adeboye said.
The cleric, who shared testimonies of the divine protection, providence and preservation of God, said: “God has never changed; what he did in times past, he is still able to do the same today as we put our trust in him.”
He said God was willing to heal all the sicknesses and perform miracles.
“We must not allow traditions of men, doubt or our history to hinder us from enjoying the manifold blessings from God. God is more than enough to give us a bright new beginning,” he said
He urged Christians to continue to preach the gospel because the challenges of insecurity, economic hardship, fear and despair ravaging the world “can be taken away when we elevate Jesus Christ and tell of the story of redemption everywhere we go”.
The Pastor-in-charge, Pastor Kola Odesanmi, said that the visit would help the parish to do more in raising heaven-bound members.
He said: “Our goal is to make heaven and we are poised to take as many people along with us.”

Adeboye: CAN excited as Buhari fires FRC chief
For Christians, it was an exciting piece of news — President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday fired Financial Reporting Council (FRC) Executive Secretary Mr. Jim Obazee.
The FRC is a Federal Government agency whose action precipitated the exit at the weekend of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye.
The influential religious leader shocked his vast congregation when he announced at the ministers’ annual thanksgiving service on Saturday that due to the FRC regulation, he was stepping down as head of the Nigerian church.
A statement by presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said President Buhari also approved the reconstitution of the board of the FRC and the appointment of Mr Adedotun Sulaiman as Chairman and Mr. Daniel Asapokhai as the Executive Secretary to replace Obazee, whose tenure ought to end in November, next year.
Mr. Sulaiman is a former Managing Partner/Director of Arthur Anderson and later, Accenture. He is a Chartered Accountant and a product of the University of Lagos and Harvard Business School.
Mr. Asopokhai is a partner and a Financial Reporting Specialist at the PricewaterHouseCoopers (PWC), Nigeria. He is a product of the University of Lagos and the University of Pretoria.
The statement added that President Buhari had instructed Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment Mr Okechukwu Enelama to invite the 19 ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government and private sector organisations specified in the FRC Act to nominate members of the council’s board.
The FRC’s stipulation of a maximum period of 20 years for the heads of all registered churches, mosques, and civil society organisations and its Governance Code 2016, which had not received final approval, was yesterday suspended by the Minister of trade and Investment.
A statement by the Strategic Communication Adviser to the Minister, Constance Ikokwu, said: “The corporate governance code remains suspended until a detailed review, extensive consultation with stakeholders and reconstitution of the board of FRC is done.”
”Government remains committed to restoring and enhancing market confidence and improving the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria. Government is also committed to strengthening FRC and enhancing its capacity to fulfill its core mandate.”
FRC, an agency under the supervision of the ministry, is responsible for setting and promoting compliance with standards for accounting, financial reporting and auditing in Nigeria. It also regulates the practices of professionals involved in financial reporting and promotes good practices in financial reporting and corporate governance.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) hailed Obazee’s removal.
General Secretary Rev. Musa Asake said last night:”The sack of Jim (Obazee) is good riddance to bad rubbish. Anybody that wants to fight the church will find himself where he does not want.
“Jim got to the position by the grace of God, but set out to probe and destroy the church of God. I spoke with him several times on this issue but he wouldn’t listen. He was going to take the church to what is worse than Armageddon.
“Thank God the authorities have stepped in to right the wrong. He should have been fired a long time ago and we don’t know why he was left alone, but God’s time is always the best.
“That code should be thrown out completely because government should not interfere with the church. The church is a no-go zone for the government.
“Doing that has serious implications. It they attempt it, it will lead to confusion in the nation.”
Senior Pastor , Living Spring Chapel International, Lagos, Pastor Femi Emmanuel, said: “It is a right step in the right direction. Government has no business meddling in the internal structure and governance of the church.
“There is no government in the world that does that.
“Anyone who does that is incurring the wrath of God. Yes, there could be financial regulation of churches but never in the internal structure of the church.
“Everything that has to do with the internal structure and governance of the church must be expunged from the code.”
Obazee, a former pastor of the RCCG, said only 89 of the 23,216 registered churches in the country had complied with FRC provisions.
The leadership of CAN has slated an emergency meeting on the FRC code and other related matters.
CAN President Rev. Samson Ayokunle said the organisation’s lawyers would review the issues and make their position known to the public.
Ayokunle spoke through his Media Assistant Pastor Bayo Oladeji.
“CAN will react at the right time and make its decision public. We are studying the situation. CAN leadership will meet. Our lawyers are studying the situation,” he said.

Adeboye to Christians: serve God in spirit, in truth
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, yesterday urged Christians to serve God in spirit and in truth if they truly want to experience the blessings of God in 2017.
He spoke at the 2017 Annual Lagos State Thanksgiving Service held at the Lagos House in Ikeja.
He drew his text from Exodus 3:1-8, Genesis 18:1-8 and Mark 10:46-52 among others and admonished Nigerians to leave the camp of the devil and embrace God’s camp.
The service featured music ministrations, bible readings and prayers for the nation, for Lagos State as well as for every citizen of the state.
Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode urged residents to pray for the prosperity of the state.
Ambode described this year’s thanksgiving as significant because it will usher in activities for the 50th anniversary of the creation of Lagos State. The state was created in May 1967.
Ambode said: “We are thanking God and showing supplication for allowing us to witness the Golden Jubilee Anniversary together.
“It is also an occasion, irrespective of our religion, to reaffirm our faith in Him and our belief in His grace, to make our hopes and aspirations for this New Year.
Ambode recalled that at last year’s thanksgiving service, prayers were offered for the state to grow in spite of the bleak economic outlook predicted in many quarters.
“We believe that as we are gathered this evening to praise Him and glorify His Holy name, new doors and windows of opportunities shall be opened for us as individuals, as a state and as a nation.
“We want to officially welcome all other states and governors to the Year 2017. We join hands together as Lagosians to wish Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari, who once worshipped here with us, Happy New Year, and pray that God will honour him as he leads the ship of the nation to its rightful destination.”
Among those who graced the event were former military administrator, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Senator Olamilekan Solomon, Senator Ganiyu Solomon, traditional rulers and religious leaders.

Atiku hails Adeboye’s ‘inspirational leadership’
Former Vice President and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Atiku Abubakar has described the outgoing national General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, as a unique inspirational leader, whose influence cuts across tribe, class and religion.
Atiku said in a statement by his Media Office in Abuja that the religious leader’s influence on many Nigerians over the past four decades was overwhelming.
“Some of the most prominent personalities Nigeria has been blessed with have been those who learnt from the pulpit of Pastor Adeboye. A most recent example is our current Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo,” he said.
He hailed the efforts of Pastor Adeboye, which clearly went beyond the normal expectations for a preacher, such as his active participation in the war against Human immunodeficiency virus infection and Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in Nigeria, which saw him featuring in an anti-AIDS advert that was aired on national television.
Atiku hailed the role that the cleric played as a converging figure for other religious leaders in Nigeria.
“Pastor Adeboye is the kind of religious leader I pray that we see more of in Nigeria. He is a man beloved, and who loved one and all without discrimination,” he said.

Confusion as Adeboye names Obayemi new RCCG Overseer
-My father remains RCCG Worldwide General Overseer –Son
-Why cleric stepped down as head of church
-Oyedepo, Oritsejafor, Okonkwo, Kumuyi may be affected by FRC ruleTHE 2017 was only a few minutes away on December 31,2016 when Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye began to reel out his prophesies for the new year at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Camp in Ogun State.
It would be a year of many surprises, the widely respected General Overseer of the church said among other prophesies.
One hundred and sixty eighty hours after, the man named in 2008 by the American magazine Newsweek as one of the 50 most influential across the globe, delivered one of such surprises himself:he quit as head of the biggest Pentecostal church in Nigeria.
But he continues to hold sway as General Overseer of the RCCG Worldwide.
This is already generating a debate among RCCG members and non-members alike.
The bone of contention is the place of General Overseer RCCG Worldwide in the constitution of the Church. The constitution makes provision for only one General Overseer.
Succeeding him is Pastor Joshua Obayemi, who until now ,was Special Assistant to the General Overseer (SATGO) on Finance.
Adeboye described the new GO as an experienced administrator who has been prepared for years by God for the task.
Obayemi,he explained ,was part of the mission’s Salary Review Committee and a member of the church’s In-Land Mission, which represented RCCG at Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) activities across the country.
There was pin drop silence in the auditorium as Pastor Adeboye announced the change of guards to hundreds of ministers of the church who had gathered for their Annual Thanksgiving at Shimawa, Ogun State.
Among the participating ministers was Vice President Yemi Oshinbajo.
Also appointed were Pastor Johnson Odesola, as the new church secretary and Pastor Joseph Adeyokunnu, as the new treasurer.
Pastor Adeboye who turns 75 in March said his exit was on account of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria National Code of Governance 2015 stipulations. The code, which has been undergoing public hearings since last year, came up with radical regulations for Not For Profit Organisations (NFPOs).
Section nine of the code entitled ‘position of the leader or founder’ stipulates that whoever leads a charitable organisation shall not occupy the position for more than ten years or after attainment of 70 years.
Religious leaders, particularly in the church, have kicked against the provision among others. They protested as the public hearing in Lagos, stating the provision was targeted at them.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) under its immediate past president,Biship Ayo Oritshejafor vehemently resisted the proposal under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
It is not yet clear how other church leaders who are directly affected by the proposal will handle the situation.
In this category are: Pastor William Kumuyi of Deeper Life, Dr. Mike Okonkwo of TREM, Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church Worldwide, and Biship Oritshejafor of Word of Life Bible Church.
However, a highly placed source in FRCN yesterday faulted the announcement of Obayemi as Adeboye’s successor.
Asked to elaborate, the source said: “when you’re talking about governance code, you know we have nomination committee, which says you cannot nominate your successor, he (Adeboye) has breached that now.
“He’s not supposed to nominate his successor. But, we agree now that maybe the church already has agreed on their successor.”
“So remuneration committee- you cannot determine your own salary, even your work place, then you now have audit committee- you cannot audit yourself. So if you are General Overseer of Redeemed, for instance, and you are in charge of these three governance positions. You know the way Redeemed is structured from the start, it is a church that the Audit committee is headed by G.O, the remuneration and nomination committee is headed by G.O.
“He is the one that audits people; he is the one that appoints people; and he is the one that determines salaries.
“So the act says that if you have occupied this governance position and you have been there for more 20 years or you have attained 70 years of age you can no longer do that.
“ You can be chairman board of trustees; so you now become the spiritual leader but you can’t be somebody who will be responsible for operations.
When we held a private meeting with all the General Overseers, the big ones in Victoria Island it was made very clear to them that you will need to separate these things.
”You said ‘God called you’, we cannot say ‘God did not call you’. So you are a spiritual leader but God did not say you should also be the accountant because you are operating in a country where there is a law.”
Adeboye was given a national honour by the late President Umaru Yar Adua.
Asked why he accepted the honour then ,Adeboye said:“God said I should not refuse it, that it is not about me, it is about my church.”
And on his rating by Newsweek,he said: “Suddenly, they said they listed 50 most powerful people in the world, and they mentioned your General Overseer. I said ‘God, what is it now? I want to sit in my own corner and do my own thing quietly.’ But He said it is about me and my church. They said I am number 49.”
Apparently reacting to the deluge of questions raised by RCCG members and non-members alike over the new dispensation in the church,Adeboye’s son/special assistant,Pastor Leke Adeboye, issued a clarification to the effect that the elder Adeboye “remains the General Overseer of RCCG Worldwide.”
He advised all members of RCCG to understand this new structure and go about their service to God and humanity in holiness and soul winning.
He also appealed to members to educate people around them and not spread inaccurate information.
A further clarification came from Pastor Odesola who,in a memo RCCG/PERS/JFO/AD/MEMO/07/01/2017 and entitled New Structure in RCCG Nigeria, said: “Kindly be informed that this new structure is peculiar to Nigeria alone,as Pastor E.A.Adeboye ,Daddy G.O.remains the Spiritual Leader and Global Missioner of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Adeboye was born on March 2, 1942, at Ifewara, Osun State.
He read Mathematics at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and later got a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Lagos.
Thereafter ,he worked as a lecturer in Mathematics at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin, before going into full time priesthood in 1984.
After joining the RCCG in 1973, he began working to translate the sermons of its then Pastor and founder, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, from Yoruba into English.
In 1981, Adeboye was appointed General Overseer of the church ,succeeding Akindayomi, who had died the previous year.
In his first three years as head of the church,Pastor Adeboye combined his spiritual assignment with his teaching job,but finally gave up his university position to preach full-time.
In his 36 years in charge of the RCCG,Adeboye transformed it into a phenomenon, becoming Nigeria’s biggest, with branches globally in about 190 countries, including more than 14,000 in Nigeria.
Adeboye had said his aim was to put a church within five minutes of every person on earth. He married Adenike, now 68 in 1967.

What next for Adeboye, RCCG?
WITH Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye’s surprise announcement of Pastor Joseph O. Obayemi as the new General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (in Nigeria) yesterday, church members and millions of Nigerians are wondering what would be the future role of the popular cleric in the church and how the current development will impact on the structure of the mission?
Most of the RCCG ministers, who gathered at the gigantic Shimawa New Auditorium in Ogun State for the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving Service yesterday, could not believe their ears when the highly revered head of the church, who would be 75 in March this year, made the “unexpected” announcement.
In a bid to assuage the fears he saw in the eyes of the dumbfounded ministers at the thanksgiving service, Adeboye, fondly called Daddy G. O, had assured them that what has happened does not mean he would no longer be available at the Holy Ghost and Congress services at the camp.
Notwithstanding the assurance from the Man of God, the questions in the lips of most of the members of the church and other concerned Nigerians who responded to the development yesterday include whether the pastor has actually retired, as some interpreted his action yesterday, or if the development was a mere prelude to a major re-organization in the fundamental structure of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)?
The confusion that trailed the new appointment draws from the fact that the current law governing the church has provision for only one General Overseer (G.O), who is both the Spiritual and Administrative Head of the mission. In that position, Pastor Adeboye is also the Chairman of both the Governing Council, the highest organ of the church with 18 members and the Board of Trustees.
With yesterday’s appointment of Pastor Obayemi as the General Overseer (in Nigeria), observers are wondering if that would mean an imminent amendment of the mission’s law? They argued that if Pastor Obayemi’s powers will be limited to Nigeria, it suggests that other parts of the world, like Europe, America, Asia and other parts of Africa, where the church, (unarguably, the biggest Pentecostal Church in Africa, if not the world), has made appreciative impact, may soon get their own General Overseers?
If that happens, they ask if Pastor Adeboye will eventually change his title or remain Daddy G.O? It is the speculation yesterday that this scenario may soon play out that has sparked off their curiosity to know how Daddy G. O intends to share power with the emerging countries or continental Overseers.
Most critically, they asked if the development means that Daddy G.O will actually “take the back seat” or if the impending restructuring will lead to a split of the spiritual and administrative roles of the General Overseer (G.O) so that Pastor Adeboye will now limit his role to that of the Spiritual Leader of the church, leaving administration to the other General Overseer(s).
Even if this happens, some respondents said yesterday that the bulk of the church membership is in Nigeria. Although the church, founded in Nigeria in 1952 by Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi is today in over 190 countries across the five continents of the world, it’s Nigerian chapter alone has over 14,000 parishes and houses the international headquarters, the huge Redemption camps, which are big cities in their own rights, many schools, colleges and the Redeemers University of Nigeria (RUN), amongst others. The question one agitated observer asked yesterday in The Nation’s newsroom was if the new General Overseer is to oversee these, what would be left of the global RCCG?
It would be recalled that talks about impending retirement of Pastor Adeboye has been on for some years now, especially since 2012 when reports claimed that some pastors from outside Nigeria visited Daddy G.O and advised him to retire at 70, citing the retirement of some very senior pastors like M.O. Ojo, Ilori, Aderibigbe and D. Ojo in 2010.
Since then, whenever the issue cropped up, some elements alleged to have been behind it had reportedly based their agitation on RCCG’s law that requires any senior pastor, up to the rank of Deputy General Overseer (DGO) or Assistant General Overseer (AGO), who is up to 70 years of age, to retire.
In August 2015, that same law was quoted when the mission retired 20 senior pastors “who have attained the age of 70 in obedience to the church’s constitution, which pegged retirement age at 70.”
Aside the issue of retirement and its implications, some members of the church also expressed surprise at the way the New General Overseer emerged, alleging that, though Daddy G.O had predicted that this will be a year of surprises, nothing about his previous pronouncements on the person that will succeed him prepared them for what happened yesterday.
Everybody therefore expects to hear more about the development.

”New Overseer Obayemi has been prepared by God”, says Adeboye
AHEAD of his 75th birthday in March this year,The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Saturday appointed a new General Overseer (GO) for the church as he retires. Reports have it that the new GO is Pastor Joseph Osuolale Obayemi as the GO (Nigeria) while the new church Secretary is Pastor Johnson Folorunsho Odesola and the treasurer is Pastor Joseph Adeyokunu. Pastor Adeboye who revealed that he remains the GO (Worldwide) for the church which has presence in over 192 countries in the world added that new GO – Obayemi will oversee the Nigerian arm of the church, adding that, “this will also affect other General Overseers including David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church aka Winners’Chapel; Kumuyi of Deeper Life; Daniel Olukoya of Mountain of Fire Ministries, among others.”
He described the new GO as an experienced administrator who has been prepared for years by God for the task. Prior to his appointment as the new General Overseer for RCCG, Nigeria Obayemi’s has been part of the mission’s Salary Review Committee as well as member of the church’s In-Land Mission, which has also represented RCCG at Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) activities across the country. Further reports says that Obayemi was appointed the new GO at the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving at Shimawa, in Ogun State. The newly appointed GO was the former Special Assistant to the General Overseer (SATGO) on Finance.
Notable things about Pastor Joseph Obayemi
The new Head, Pastor Joseph Obayemi was picked from Lagos state, as he was the clergyman in charge of Lagos Province 28, Region 2.As one of the prominent ministers of the assembly, he has been one of the decision makers as a member of the governing council of RCCG.He also seems to be a trustworthy fellow to have been picked by Pastor Adeboye as he was a deputy in charge of Finance. The incoming GO also headed the board of governors, House fellowship of the RCCG body. His selection may also have been based on the fact that he was a special assistant to Daddy GO on Finance Pastor In Charge of Region (PICR) in the region where he was the pastor. In 2015, he laid the foundation of the place of worship of the province, although it was a temporary site. Obayemi was appointed at the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving at Shimawa, in Ogun State. He is now the General Overseer of RCCG Nigeria as Pastor Adeboye remains the Worldwide General Overseer.
He is a confidant of Pastor Adeboye and at many times represented Daddy GO at programmes. He is happily married with children Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye declared that 2017 will be a “Year of Suprises”. Little did members of the church know that the surprises will begin with them.
Pastor Adeboye who was ordained as General Overseer (most senior pastor) of RCCG in 1981 affirms that the new GO, Pastor Obayemi will not stop him from carrying out this functions or drive him away from the camp.
As spiritual head Adeboye will still be allowed to conduct RCCG’S ‘Holyghost’ services as well as visit RCCG churches.
Order of Succession in England and America In the Church of England only adultery and divorce can disqualify Charles or any other person in line of succession from the queen. This is so meticulously planned that when these conditions are met, the next person takes over, not only as the King of England or the head of the Anglican Church as the defender of faith according to Parliament decree. UIn this way, he fills the role given to the history he shares with the church of England.
In America, where the Apostolic Faith predominates, a person taking over the leadership has to be the next in line to the retiring Bishop. This is so because the Bishops are the best organ through which the Church continues in its apostolic voyage on earth. This is indeed transmitted from the Apostles by each generation laying hands on the in-coming Bishop or successor.

Adeboye predicts better fortune for Nigeria
General Overseer of the Redemmed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has predicted that the downward trend of Nigeria’s economy will be halted this year, adding that a reversal will begin.
Giving his prediction during the night service before thousands of worshippers at the Redeemed Camp on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, he said on Nigeria: “2017 will be a year of surprises both for the oppressed and the oppressor. Surprise is a two edged sword
“Those deliberately making life difficult for the common man will be relocated. The downward plunge will slow down, stop and reversal will begin.”
For individuals, he predicted that. ”It will be a year of surprises. For prophets both true and false it will be a year of surprises. There will be quite a large number of weddings. Soul winners will see their prophecies fulfilled almost as soon as they are uttered.”
His prediction on what will happen in the world this year is that “There will be surprises for many world governments. They are coming in twos: monster earthquakes, monster floods, hurricanes and typhoons, monster tornadoes and monster fire outbreaks.”
