RCCG’s altars not for women with makeup, men with braids – Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has criticized certain fashion trends among church members, specifically addressing men with braided hair and women wearing false eyelashes and heavy makeup.

Speaking during the church’s 72nd annual convention, Adeboye expressed his disapproval of these styles, stating that they would no longer be tolerated on RCCG altars.

He emphasised that braided hair is traditionally associated with Sango priests in Yorubaland, and adopting such styles contradicts the church’s values and mission.

“In Yorubaland, the only men who braid hair are the priests of Sango, the god of thunder. They say this is a new age and that we must be adaptable to what is going on. To continue as Sango priests? Not in this mission. Even after I’m gone, it will still not happen”, he said.

He also criticised female pastors who wear heavy makeup, saying they would be removed from the altar.

According to Church Times, Adeboye said further, “Take this word from me. When we find anybody among pastors; particularly female pastors, made up to look like a representative of Nollywood; we will walk her off the altar.”

The cleric emphasised the importance of modesty and self-acceptance, encouraging church members to appreciate their natural appearance.

“You can quote me: Tell anybody who questioned why you are doing this drastic change, tell him or her, “Daddy GO said so,” he asserted.

He urged those who feel the need to alter their appearance to repent and embrace their originality.

“He did a good job. When He created you, you were original. You remain an original”.

While pleading for forgiveness if he was too harsh, he said, ‘You may not like it. If you are my children, you can’t kill me. Do you know why men don’t makeup? I mean, real men. It’s because we have what is called a superiority complex.  We stand before the Lord and say, ‘God, You did a good job creating us. You made no mistake.

“When you begin to fix false nails, I wonder what you want to achieve – If God wanted to make you a bird, He would have given you a false nail and false eyelashes”.

Adeboye wondered why a woman would expose her breasts.

“She wants to divert attention from her face.  She believes she is ugly, so the man will be lured.  All my daughters listen to me: You are fearfully and wonderfully made. If anybody does not like you the way you are, it’s that person’s loss,” he added.

    Adeboye’s admonition on leadership

The General Overseer, Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has charged graduands of Redeem International Leadership Academy (RILA), Lagos to preach the word of God and be prepared in season and out of season to correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instructions. He urged them to keep their heads in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist and discharge all the duties of the ministry.

Speaking at the valedictory service of the academy held at RCCG, Olive Tree Parish, Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos last Saturday, Pastor Adeboye represented by Assistant Continental Overseer of the Redeem Christian Church of God in charge of Research and Development, Pastor Josiah Bolarinwa said that the graduands must take what they learned to the marketplace and to the world so that they can pass on the good legacy of the Christian faith that they have imbibed.

“For the time will come, when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist and discharge all the duties of your ministry,” he added, quoting 2Timothy 4 1-5.

He said everything starts and ends on the table of a leader. “Give me a good leader, I will tell you that organisation will be very good. Leadership is very important and vital.  It gives a sense of direction to the followers,” he noted. He explained that the reason RILA was established is to produce leaders that will be good examples and will transform their areas of influence.

In her paper titled Creativity and Innovation in Transforming Christian Ministry in Contemporary Society, Rector Redeemer’s College of Technology and Management, Mowe Ogun state, Dr. Stella Mofunanya said that the contemporary landscape of Christian ministry is characterised by rapid social, cultural and technological changes. These dynamics, she said, necessitate a transformative approach to ministry that leverages creativity and innovation.

She noted that in a rapidly changing world, the church’s mission remains constant to spread the gospel, serve communities, and nurture faith. “Yet, the methods we use must evolve to meet the needs of our times. Creativity and innovation are essential in ensuring that the church remains a vibrant and relevant force in contemporary society.

“Creativity and innovation are closely related concepts that play a crucial role in problem-solving, development, and progress in various fields, including Christian ministry. Creativity is the ability to generate novel and original ideas, while innovation involves the practical application of these ideas to create value.

Creativity is the ability to generate new and original ideas, concepts, or solutions. It involves thinking outside the box, seeing connections between seemingly unrelated things, and using imagination to produce something novel. Creativity can manifest in various forms, including art, writing, problem-solving, and even in everyday tasks,” she said.

He stressed that by fostering both creativity and innovation, Christian ministry can continually adapt to meet contemporary challenges, connect with diverse groups, and make a lasting, positive impact on society.

On the role of technology in ministry transformation, she said technological advancements have significantly impacted how Christian ministry is conducted, adding that digital platforms such as social media, websites, and mobile applications have expanded the reach of ministry beyond physical boundaries.

She saidlive streaming services, virtual Bible studies and online prayer groups provide accessible spiritual resources, fostering a sense of community and engagement among believers.

“Research indicates that churches that effectively utilise technology tend to experience growth and increased engagement. For instance, the use of social media for evangelism and discipleship has proven effective in reaching younger demographics, who are often more digitally inclined,” she added.

Continuing, she said: “The 21st century presents unique challenges and opportunities. Technological advancements, cultural shifts, and evolving social dynamics necessitate a fresh approach to ministry. Traditional methods, while valuable, often fall short of engaging new generations and addressing current issues. Thus, the church must embrace creativity and innovation to continue fulfilling its mission effectively. By embracing technology, revitalising worship, engaging communities and enhancing discipleship, the Church can effectively fulfill its mission.”

Rector Redeem International Leadership Academy, Pastor Banky Ladele said 135 graduates have been transformed, equipped and prepared for deployment either to the ministry or the secular world. Of the 135 graduands, there are 11 masters, 105 PGD, three diplomas and 16 certificate holders. He disclosed that the academy offers training in seven areas of leadership, which include self, family, youth, pastoral, marketplace, political and community.

No amount of anointing can fight sexual temptation —Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said he is still wary of sexual immorality in spite of his anointing and years in the ministry.

Speaking during a sermon at the just concluded Ministers & Workers Conference of RCCG America 1, consisting North, Central & Caribbean with the theme “The Glory Ahead”, the clergyman said in spite of his age, he runs as fast as he can to avoid any form of sexual temptation, noting that no amount of anointing can fight it.

He, therefore, warned ministers of the gospel to be wary of sexual immorality and the erroneous belief that their ‘anointing’ could help them withstand any temptation.

In the sermon which shared on his YouTube page on Friday, Adeboye noted that Samson, who was a judge in Israel, fell into sexual immorality in spite of the anointing over him.

He said: “Somebody says at your age, why are you still running? I run faster than before because the closer you get to the finishing point, the more careful you must be.

“Some of you can say, ‘Daddy, what are you saying, are you still running?’ I run fast.

“’With all your anointing?’ Does anointing turn your body into stone? Samson was anointed. Single-handedly, he killed a thousand soldiers. A woman finished him. I hope the boys are listening.

“You can say, ‘Is anybody still interested in an 82-year-old man?’ She is not interested in you but interested in putting an end to all the great works God has done through you.

“You see that woman smiling at you everywhere you go, she is there smiling, and she is not your wife, run!”

Telling the youths to be wary of lust and run away from anything that looks like sin, the clergyman added: “And you girls, when you see a boy smiling at you, saying ‘Where have you been all my life? It looks as if the sun has just come out.’

“He is calling you sunshine. By the time he finishes with you, you won’t even know the difference between sunshine and sunset. You may laugh, but mark my words.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has blessed the newly reconstructed RCCG Lagos Province 28 Headquarters, located in the Ogudu GRA Scheme 2 area of Lagos State.

The church, known as the Province of Latter Glory, was formally dedicated on May 26, 2024, after a devastating fire destroyed the previous structure nearly three years ago.

Assistant Pastor in Charge of the Province, Thompson Olulade, reflected on the challenging journey of rebuilding the church. “It was a very big challenge and a very hectic journey initially. Securing demolition permits from the government was particularly tiring. But we bless God for what He has done today. We can now celebrate a new structure, a new edifice that people can identify with. The scripture is fulfilled in the life of LP28; that the glory of the latter house shall be greater than the former.”

Addressing the youth, Olulade emphasized the importance of acquiring skills and knowledge, especially in the current harsh economic climate. “We advise the youth to learn more skills and keep themselves equipped with the right knowledge. They should affiliate with the right people to shun evil and make progress even in adversity. We encourage them to draw closer to God because, without Him, we can achieve nothing in life.”

“It happened around 6 a.m. on May 9, 2021. I had a vigil in the church until around 3 a.m., only to be called at 6 a.m. about the fire. By the time I arrived, it was too late to save anything. Today, I am so happy that God has brought beauty from ashes. I am grateful that my family and the church survived, and we can celebrate with our leaders.”

Emphasizing the importance of fire safety, Akinsulore added, “Every public building should have a standby fire extinguisher and a reliable water system. Our government should also be more proactive regarding fire incidents.”

Pastor Bola Orekoya, the Pastor in Charge of Province 28, praised the safety measures implemented to prevent future incidents.

Adeboye, yesterday, during the monthly thanksgiving service at the RCCG headquarters, The Throne of Grace, Ebute-Metta gave the admonition where he spoke on ‘Renewed like Eagles,’ with prayers for all fathers, mothers, single parents, widows, widowers, children and youth with their families.

“It is preposterous for anyone who wants to live a quality and sustainable life to get connected to God just like it is imperative for any electrical equipment to keep on connecting with a socket with electricity for it to continue functioning.

“Immediately such equipment is detached from the electricity, it loses the potency of functionality. If it is hot, the hotness will start going down until it becomes cold as it was before it was plugged into the socket with electricity.  In the same vein, any human being that is detached from God will never make it, because God is the power (the electricity) that sustains man. This is the reason every Nigerian should renew his relationship with God to live a meaningful life,” he said.

He explained that the word ‘Renewal’ means making something new again, adding that when one renews his or her relationship with God, the individual’s lost joy, health, hope, and anointing among others will be renewed and restored.

He disclosed that the process of renewal includes repairing, replacing, or complete overhauling which God can effect with His sovereign power.

He reiterated that when someone is renewed, such an individual becomes mentally, spiritually, and emotionally balanced.

Adeboye celebrates 82nd birthday, thanks God

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, says he is alive because God is wonderful, recalling how he once escaped death by the whiskers.

He spoke at the Redemption Camp, off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun, on Saturday as he clocked 82, with congregants celebrating him.

Adeboye narrated the incident, which many years ago, according to him, could have claimed his life, if not for a miraculous intervention of God.

He referred to an earlier narrative by his former driver of several accidents in which the cleric and his wife escaped death in various incidents on the way to Ilorin, Kwara.

Adeboye said that the most frightening was one in which their vehicle came face to face with a trailer that was coming at full speed on a narrow path, by a bridge which had a river by its side.

“Somehow we passed,” he said, noting that it was a miracle that they escaped unhurt in the incident, which left both him and his driver shaking.

Adeboye said the escape amazed his driver, that all the way to Ilorin, all he was repeating was ‘wonderful.’

“That I’m alive today is because His name is called wonderful,” he said, and prayed that God would be wonderful in the lives of the people.

Adeboye appreciated the church members for celebrating him, praying that none of them would die young, and that they would be greater than him.

He said that his 82nd birthday anniversary also marked the 38th anniversary of the annual Special Holy Ghost Service organised by the church.

Adeboye thanked God for the lives that had been touched through the programme.

The cleric, at the event, went on to preach on the theme of the Holy Ghost Service – On Eagles Wings.

Preaching from Exodus Chapter 19, he said, “When God hears and takes notice of a person, the life of such a person changes for better.

“God can grab you from the lowest point on earth and put you on the throne.”

According to him, when one’s case is beyond any human assistance, the God who knows will send help.

The cleric said that all God required was faith and holiness, and He was able to give sweatless victory.

He prayed that God would hear the cries of the people, carry them on eagle’s wings and deliver them totally like He did for the children of Israel.

Adeboye, Ezekwesili charge citizens on rebuilding Nigeria

The wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor (Mrs.) Folu Adeboye has challenged Nigerians to take personal responsibility for the rebuilding of the ruins of the country.

Adeboye spoke yesterday at the 10th Pastor E. A Adeboye Annual Birthday Public Lecture held at the Youth Centre RCCG, Redemption City of God, Ogun State.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture tagged: ‘Rebuild, Renew, Restore: The need of the Nigeria Nation,’ Mrs. Adeboye said the country needs men and women who will be intentional within their sphere of influence in rebuilding the ruins of Nigeria, noting that the parlous state of the economy requires collective actions from all and sundry.

Citing some biblical verses, she urged the citizens to emulate the likes of Nehemiah and Esther, who according to her stood up when it matters most for the rebuilding of their county.

While decrying the Japa syndrome by the youths who are seeking greener pastures outside the shores of the country, she said, said “Nigeria is home, you still have the green pasture with you anywhere you go, more so, Nigerians were once sent back from a particular country.

“In our homes, churches, schools, colleges, and various public places, we need to show a sign of rebuilding. Let up uphold the values of righteousness, purity, genuine love, patriotism and shine as light in our little corners,” she stressed.

The cleric further implores public office holders to be good stewards in the discharge of their responsibilities because they will one day give account to God.

“People’s blood will be required out of your hands. You have a responsibility to lead well and shun all forms of selfishness, corruption, and attitudes that could further ruin our beloved country,” she said.

Speaking earlier in a keynote address, former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili said that the abysmal state of affairs of the country requires the courageous acts of the political class to care about delivering good governance to the people.

She noted that the critical nation formations which should now be well negotiated through the citizens’ emergency rescue plan for Nigeria is urgent.

“Rescue plan for Nigeria are in two blocks which are the people with a new set of values, a rallying vision of the people of Nigeria, an agreed common identity which everyone respects and values and a public leadership recruitment system for high quality of leadership decision.

“The second block which is restructuring include: institution building agenda, a new constitution adopted through a yes or no referendum on its provisions and a transparent and credible electoral system that deepens our democracy, efficiently conducts elections so that it regulates and penalise poor public leadership delivery by politicians to citizens by their power to vote,” she said.

Earlier, the Convener of the prorgamme, Pastor Elder Tunji Onileaja said that the public lecture was meant to open our eyes to see the need to rebuild, renew and restore the lost glory of our fatherland.
